Since he was born Kai was taught the ways of the forge. A tradition, no a LIFE, handed down the Reinor family. From dawn til dusk his father would show him not only how to make a blade, but how to use it. To his fathers dismay and embarrassment, Kai never developed a talent to use or shape a blade
Because of Kai’s(Age 8) lack of talent in the family tradition, and his insistence on reading and learning things that had nothing to do with it; His father decided on a new course of action. The very next day he gather all the books in the house. “Saleen, Kai, I need you in here” Samuel shouted. “Dad why are the all books in here”, asked a puzzled Kai. “Since you won’t put forth a better effort at learning your craft, I’ve decided”, and with out finishing he reached for a book and tossed it into the fire. “I decided from this day on there will be no books of anykind in my home”, he looked down on a now crying child, as he out another book on the flame. “I’ve also pulled you out of school. I’ll only have you learning what you need from me."
Even after all these events Kai's(Age 9) metalworking never improved, to his fathers standards. It was at this point Kai met Samuel Transon. It could have been a number of factors. His name being the same as his fathers. His craftmenship being better than his. But, even more so, the favoritism his father showed him.
His father always complemented the young man on his work. Though he had nothing but loathing for his sons. "That boy has a gift", and other such flattery were often heard at the dinner table.
Though it pained him to do so, Kai swore to himself that from that day on he would be the "best" in Clearbrook. Better that Transon, and better than his father.
It was around the age of 10, that Kai would once again have a chance to enjoy himself. Kai had finally made something to call his own. A small bronze dagger. He was so happy he showed his father. "Garbage", he took the Kai's creation, and with one swing of his hammer cracked the blade on an anvil. His father stared at him. A smile creeping across his face.
Kai left the forge crying. The sound of his father and a few others laughter filling the morning air. Kai ran from there as fast as he could. Hoping to just keep going until he was out of the town. The next thing Kai knew, there was a loud “Thump”! He tumbled to the ground and looked up. “Watch where you’re...” Kai didn’t finish. A gentle smile and hand were extend before him. “I’m sorry”, said the caring voice.
Kai knew her, “The Sage of Clearbrook”, Lady Tabetha. From the what he had heard she was the smartest, most educated person in town. His father of course said she was an old hag, and ate young children.

After Samuel's death/disapperance, his sword was passed onto Kai. Though he'd personally not own the blade, a secret he keeps to himself. He practices with it semi-regularly. He has also dubbed it Samiel, a nod to his father,Samuel, and also a character, Ramiel, from of his fables.
