Background:

A pale Chelaxian with black hair and a gaunt look to his eyes, Jonah Arnisant appears worn and drawn, his face having the lines of someone a fair bit older than his thirty-one years. While possessed of a keen intellect as well as an aptitude for clockwork and alchemical experimentation, Jonah is often distracted and withdrawn in his attitude toward others, appearing to be listening to something else that only he can hear rather than the words of those around him. His attire consists of utilitarian but finely tailored clothing, usually in dark browns, greys or black. He often wears a long greatcoat or cloak with voluminous sleeves, his hands bare and pale. Traceries of tattooing can be seen along the tops of his hands, hinting at further inking up his arms. The iconography, while hard to get a full glimpse of, suggests holy symbols and passages.

Possessed of the ability to hear and interact with the spirits of the dead since his youth, Jonah has used this power to carve out a successful career as a traveling detective and spiritualist, often able to find a body or solve a crime in an area that the regular constabulary could not.

Unfortunately, even to this day, Jonah has little control over his supernatural abilities, for the restless dead talk to him when they wish. Even when Jonah so often pleaded for quiet in years past, the spirits would not leave him be. As he has gotten older, Jonah has become better at tuning out the ceaseless noise, but even still he sleeps in small restless increments, his distraction often stemming from the unending chatter of the dead who seek his assistance.

Jonah has difficulty relating to or interacting with others, not only because of the ceaseless noise, but often because of what the voices are saying. The dead see so many things about the living, and the spirits around Jonah often fill his ears with the worst about any living being he makes any attempt to interact with. Due to this, Jonah frequently fills his time with studies and experiments in solitude, preferring to work alone or ahead of a group he has no choice but to interact with.

In part to quiet the voices of the dead, as well as to soothe his nerve, Jonah is often seen smoking rolled tobacco and partaking of a small hip flask. Even during his investigations on behalf of a client or a constabulary that has sought out his services, a roll of tobacco will rarely be far from his lips.

It was during one such case that Jonah ran across Professor Lorrimor. In the process, he saved the professor’s life from a malevolent entity. Over the following years, the two shared occasional correspondence, with these missives often regarding some esoteric piece of knowledge or a particularly troublesome experiment. For a man with no one close to him in his life, his occasional letters to and from Lorrimor was some of the most interaction Jonah had with any one person or being.

Upon hearing of the Professor’s death via the summons in the will, Jonah made haste, intent on both hearing why he has been summoned as well as looking into what caused the death of the one person that was the closest thing Jonah had to an actual friendship.

General Character Direction / Party Role:

Primarily, Jonah will function as an out-of-combat skill-monkey, able to make any and all Knowledge skill rolls with his Inspiration ability. In addition, his Trapfinding, Disable Device and Perception abilities will allow him to supplement his role with being a potential party trap specialist.

Flavor-wise, his Spiritualist abilities will help both his survivability against undead creatures as well as add some interesting flavor with his growing potential to interact with and suss out clues with those abilities as he levels.

Finally, his ability to utilize firearms and thrown weapons with growing potential as he levels will allow him to function as a solid secondary ranged damage dealer in combat.

In terms of roleplaying within a party, I will play Jonah a bit quiet vocally, but will often add a quiet word when he has something to contribute via Sense Motive, Perception, a Knowledge skill, Spellcraft, etc. I have no plans to be adversarial, but will play his low CHA with a distracted air as well the tendency to speak to the dead even while trying to interact with a living conversation.
