About Jon Surtova

Background:

Jon Surtova is first cousin to King Noleski Surtova. Yet, he has near nothing to show for it. A decade before the Surtova family moved in to fill the power vacuum left by House Rogarvia’s sudden disappearance, Jon’s father, Edgard Surtova, Patriarch of House Surtova, and mother died under mysterious circumstances while coming home from a diplomatic visit with House Orlovsky.

House Surtova never officially accused House Orlovsky of being at fault, nor did House Orlovsky make any claims against Surtova or any other house. They both agreed that it was a tragedy and that Jon, the Orphan prince should be taken in by House Orlovsky to be raised. Yet many bards retell the story, filling it full of assassinations, scandals and other political intrigues...

House Orlovsky has been able to use the fact that they are raising Jon to stay above day to day squabbles with the Surtovas for almost twenty years. This arrangement proved fruitful for the Orlovsky family when the Surtovas seized the Dragonscale throne. Keeping the Surtovas focused south.

Three years ago Jon came of age and chose to return to his blood family. But he didn't get the warm welcome he was expecting. Being raised by the Orlovskys meant that he was viewed suspiciously by the Surtovas and in fact the powers that be all agreed that due to being raised by the Orlovskys it would be inappropriate for Jon to have any position of power within the house.

So left feeling like he has been denied his birthright, Jon has chosen to head out into the world to make a name for himself, knowing that if he is able to build enough support, his cousin would have to accept him as a fully capable Surtovas.

Faith
Being raised by a house that was not his own, Jon often felt like a stranger in his own home, and was often ignored, only being allowed to be a part of things during public events, when House Orlovsky could show him off.

But there was one person who made Jon feel like he belonged. Ken, House Orlovsky’s priest of Abadar, who took young Jon under his wing. Jon was completely uninterested in learning the teachings of Abadar at the time, but he liked the feeling of belonging that he got from Ken. And it wasn’t long before Jon was unknowingly repeating Abadar’s teachings on justice to anyone that would listen. Around the age of 12, Jon officially joined the Church of Abadar and from that point on all of Jon’s teachers where of the Church. And when he came of age, father Ken, impressed with Jon’s ability to appeal to the masses, officially named him a Paladin of the Church and charged him with championing justice wherever life’s journey takes him.

Appearance
Jon’s is much more handsome than the average Northerner. His face showing none of the premature aging that comes with having a “real” noblemen’s responsibly. Yet he is every bit as rugged and able bodied as the best men in Brevoy. Jon has long brown hair with deep brown eyes and wears a young man’s beard, cut well and just long enough add just the right amount of ruggedness to his handsome face. He stands tall at 6’3” and weights a healthy 210 pounds, with just enough muscle to be respected for his strength without letting it define who he is.

His typical attire includes a masterfully crafted bastard sword and a suit of full plate armor perfectly crafted to fit Jon's form. He is also frequently scene with a composite longbow when out hunting.

Personality
Jon is a cheerful and loves to laugh. And while vain in the sense entitlement, he is confident in himself enough to join in the laughter even when he is the butt of the joke. He enjoys meeting new people and routinely befriends allies and enemies alike. Other than a slight smugness over the privileges of his birthright, Jon genuinely cares for the common people. So much so, that Jon has been known to take it personally when the common folk are taken advantage of by the noble families. Most likely this is due to the influence the teachings of Abadar have had over Jon.

Motivation
Jon has come to realize that being raised by House Orlovsky means that he will never seriously be considered for positions of honor within House Surtova.
So Jon, hoping to earn a reputation for himself, has somehow talked Rostland’s swordlords into allowing him to join an expedition they recently sponsored into the Stolen Lands.
Why they would let the king’s cousin join, despite the growing conflict between the north and the south is a mystery. Some of the bard’s say he turned traitor and gave up strategic info but that’s unlikely considering that Jon still holds his family in high regard, deserved or not.
When pressed on the matter, Jon’s only response has been, "We both got something we wanted."
