I guess we're all playing sub optimal characters and all of our campaigns end in failure. Damn you Paizo!

At our home tables flavor and mechanics are completely unrelated. The flavor text Paizo writes in the books are suggestions at best and really don't even need to be there. Just pick whatever mechanical options are fun for you and re-flavor them however you want.

For example, the OP said he's using a sub-par weapon because he escaped slavery with it? At our table grab the mechanics for a greatsword, call it a pickaxe and go to town with your 2d6 19-20/2 pickaxe.

But then you can't make a weak rogue and call everyone else power gamers.

James, have you ever read Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark?

It's worth checking out for the illustrations alone.

You asked that already. Less than a week ago.

Anyways, some questions for the great Theropod:

Ever met (even if just online) people that hated prepublished adventures? Not just ones they claim are badly written, I mean any published adventure? I remember seeing some people comment (Admittedly, years ago) that they figured any GM who ran prepublished adventures didn't even deserve to run a game. Admittedly, haven't heard this recently, but then I probably haven't been hanging around the areas they do.

Favourite thing to drink during a game? (I believe you've cut sugary drinks from your diet.)

Have you ever read the comic Knights of the Dinner Table?

It's fine if someone asks a question more than once. Don't let it bother you, and don't use it as an opportunity to shame other posters, please. Not classy.

I've met plenty of people that profess to hate published adventures; I usually feel that their stance and opinion are fueled by arrogance and ignorance. Anyone who doesn't think they can learn how to do something better from someone who does that thing professionally or has done that thing for years is a fool.

Favorite thing to drink during a game is either coffee, cider, or water. Depends on my mood, the time of day, and whether or not I'm being calorie conscious.

I've read Knights of the Dinner Table; started reading it when it first got published in Dragon, and stopped when it wasn't. It's not really my sense of humor today.

Hi there, just chiming in as to why I asked twice. After asking I honestly couldn't find the reply to my original post. Not sure how it slipped by me in the first place.. I just assumed my post got lost in the flood of questions. Either way, thank you for answering both times.

INT 9 I'm a slow learner, I don't have many skills, and I often do forget things. So according to PF I'm below average.

CHA 12 I make friends easily and people seem to enjoy my company

WIS 12 I can read people/situations fairly quickly

Mechanically, without optional or house rules, there is no method for a raven to target your eye, instead of just attacking you in general and doing hit point damage (this could be flavor texted to be eye attacks, but mechanically it is just an attack like any other). Because of there is no way to specifically attack the eyes, there is also no way to specifically protect the eyes.

I will note that that a miniature giant space hamster can make eye attacks, but goggles will certainly not save you.

Any living creature damaged by a raven swarm must succeed on a DC 11 Reflex save or be blinded as the swarm scratches and tears at the victim's eyes. The blindness lasts for 1d4 days or until healed with a remove blindness or a successful DC 11 Heal check. The save DC is Constitution-based.

I'm pretty sure you can do this. You'd probably provoke an attack of opportunity if you tried to jump while they're in melee range. You'd want to ready the action to jump when they're 10 feet away from you to avoid this.

The original version of Deflect Arrows was too strong even without MoMS. The ability to simply negate one hit when combined with a good AC meant that they could save such deflections for Crits and normal hits would just miss. And with lower AC they could simply avoid 1 attack a round. No roll, no save no nothing just auto deflect. This would be capstone ability rather than something acquired at level 1, (or two).

Let's not just casually s!~$ on Paizo for not including every flavor of person out there just yet. They've tried -- and succeeded I'd say at making sure everyone has a place in Golarion. You can nit pick and say they've only included trans women, but that's missing the point entirely.

I have questioned why a Paladin must be LAWFUL in these forums before so I'm not only questioning this classes alignment restriction. I'm not up to on paladin stuff though so I can't say I make terribly informed questions, I have wondered though why there can't be paladins of neutral deities though, seeing as there are Paladins for good, and paladins (anti paladins) for bad deities, why not neutral ones? I know there alignment based class abilities would probably need a slight tweak but it is a thought.

A Paladin gets her powers from her adherence to the code, not a deity. That's where the lawfulness comes from.

Hey James, I'm hoping you could help me with some rules questions I have about the Monk of The Empty Hand.

Let's say my character has a +1 quarterstaff, and Weapon Focus: Quarterstaff. Since I am now treating the +1 Quarterstaff as a improvised weapon that acts as itself.. do those bonuses still apply to attack and damage rolls?

Nope. You have weapon focus with the quarterstaff, not with an improvised weapon.

Is there such a thing as Weapon Focus: Improvised Weapon? I know MoTEH is considered proficient with improvised weapons, and Weapon Focus' only prereq is proficiency.

Nothing jerks me out of suspension of disbelief more than the meta-gaming all-too-generic Wand of CLW. Easy fix. No divine healing is available for simple purchase. Makes sense to me anyway - what deity would allow his divine power to be bottled and sold to highest bidder, to be used to who knows what purpose? No Wands of Cure Wounds, Lesser Restoration, etc. are available for purchase in my game... though truth be told, precious little magic is anyway. Magic isn't something to be bought, sold and traded like bubblegum cards, or so my opinion holds. My PC's really enjoy their campaign world with customized magic that actuals FEELS like magic and getting to play with out the safety net of a 'cure-o-matic'.

That said, I wouldn't recommend it. You count as Cheliax for the old Season 1-5 adventures. And Cheliax plots are usually cackling evil.

*ahem*

I vividly remember all of my Andoran friends doing evil things such as killing people, extorting people, and scoping out whorehouses to make sure the madame wasn't going to supply less than stellar entertainment for a andoran general or something for faction missions. Meanwhile my Cheliax character was collecting random baubles and delivering letters for faction missions.

Interesting. thanks for the advice everyone. What would be considered a solid Will bonus at 6th level. Nothing outlandish, but solid? Right now my saves are Fort +6, Will +3 and Reflex +4. I'm playing a 3rd party class and their strong saves are actually Fort and Will, but I lowered Wis quite a bit to fit the character I wanted, using the other stats.

It's a custom campaign, so I have no clue on how much attacking on my Will my DM will throw our way.

The class has an ability to gain up to +2 insight to all of my saves (provided I can make certain DCs), but going for that means not getting a +2 to attack, which seems pretty crucial.

Thanks again!

According to the monster creation chart an easy (CR 6) monster's primary ability DC should be 16, a tough, CR 10 beastie will have a DC of around 19.

So at the moment you have a 50% chance to pass appropriate Fort saves, a 35% chance to pass appropriate Will saves, and a 40% chance on Ref saves.

It's basically all different forms of organization and management. It reminds me of how back in the day being a WoW raid leader could actually be listed on a resume. Because organizing a team of 40 people to perform a common goal with separate roles was quite a feat.

If only employers counted my gaming as useful experience...

Bought and sold virtual items for virtual wealth until I was an infamous tycoon, learned principals of optimization by playing competitive speed runs on Kingdom of Loathing, GMed for Pathfinder...

Really, Mr. Christopherson, these are legitimate skills! I'm qualified to be your CFO. *cough cough*

Depending on how you word it, the GMing Pathfinder games could be good on a resume. Something along the lines of "leader and organizer of a weekly skillset based creative solution group" or some other resume talk.

According to this thread, GM's should ignore WBL, cheat, and give players magic items they aren't interested in. Lots of focus on petty tyranny, not so much on fun.

Now admittingly finding uses for random magic loot can be fun, but purposefully not handing out gear your players are hoping for is pretty lame.

The Assassin is great for NPC's who can afford to sit around for 3 rounds, and make a low DC death attack against a PC, who survives it easily, beats the assassin, and then takes steps to find out who hired him/her.

But for players who go into dungeons and do stuff, They suck.

Fun Anecdote:I remember playing with one rogue who, in one round, was doing more damage to anything he was close to than even the most optimized anything except for maybe a Vivisectionist or smiting paladin could come close to. He was dropping Crippling Strike on top of buckets of d6's and at the same time was hiding in shadows to well to be seen [he was 13, and dropped a few levels in shadow dancer]. We convinced the townsfolk that the shadows he hid in were really the Vashta Nerada eating people in the night. Hehe, we did have a semi-flexible GM and he kinda was about 10x as optimized as the Tarrasque itself, but still it was hilarious how the town council reacted when we announced that "The Shadows are Eating your People!". Of course, when the build failed a will save for dominate after rolling a 19 on the die, one-rounded the paladin, and then subsequently was slaughtered by the confused barbarian, we kinda burned the character sheet and buried the ashes, so I can't exactly post the build. Still, it was a fun time.

Oh, we're telling fish stories now? Cause I swear we once had a melee Wizard who used to never cast spells, he slaughtered everything with two weapon fighting. I don't have the build, of course, because he was so powerful my GM destroyed the character sheet.
