Miselle took in the scene. The Duchess and the Tiefling - the cousin they were after? - looked to be no threat, but to be in danger. Focusing on the Elf, she took out her rifle and loaded a fresh salt round. Killing what appeared to be a Champion of the Fey would cause all sorts of problems. But her mission was the Duchess. If the Elf decided he was going to use that sword, she would put him down if she could.

"I can check that, if needs be." Alexander shrugged. "Or at least, I can read his mind and see if he intends to do so." The archaeologist looked up, considering. "Statements you did not think you'd be making when you woke up today..."

"Midnight," Alexander agreed, walking away. So...when is this trip going to stop? Or am I really going to have the power to teleport and crush the minds of those who fight me? It was an odd thought, and Alexander's mind felt odd...free.

As people came to, he could hear the static of there minds. Just a fizzle in the background, really, but if he looked, and concentrated...

...what happened, did I have an epileptic fit again?

...oh for f***s sake, I've got blood on my shirt

...whoa, the car is a right off.

...I feel so weird.

...the kids OK?

...ugh, feel like crap...

Dozens and dozens of thoughts. It took little effort to read those service thoughts, really. Maybe he should have read one of the creatures. Would he even understand them? It was worth a try net time.

"I admit, I am firmly convinced that this is all a hallucination brought on by the gas," Alexander said thoughtfully. "I'm reasonably sure no one's obeyed my will just because I will it. But one of the things dear Professor Brown taught when I went to school was that once you close your mind to a possible explanation, no matter how outlandish it may seem, you enter the realms of preconceived notions and bad science. Let us instead argue that magic is unlikely, but not impossible, mathematically speaking. For now, we might as well carry on as if this is all real. If it's not we'll wake up in a puddle of drool, anyway. If it is then there are more things we need to be doing."

Alexander looked at the others. "Does anyone have any medical skills? We should see if there any chance of helping the poor souls these things attacked." There wasn't much of a chance. Anyone with a gut wound who wasn't screaming had died of shock, as a rule. But it was better to get people moving and doing than standing around wondering what was going on.

As for himself, Alexander moved over to the nearest creature. The fact he didn't bother walking startled him somewhat. "Oh! That's why you all looked at me like I was crazy. Huh." Now, the trick was not doing it so often he got horribly fat. Oh, and dissected by a government lab intent on finding out how he did it.

Instead, he kneeled next to the fallen monster, trying to work out what it was and if there were any clues as to the nature of...whatever.

Cthlhu Mythos: 1d100 ⇒ 9
...does that mean I need to make a Sanity Check?

Alexander looked around, sniffing. Well, that was promising. Apparently, the sewers were getting backed up and now electric had crapped out. This was promising to be a bad day. He just hoped the Museum's old stone architecture survived whatever was about the thrown at them. It wasn't exactly a light building, and it had survived this long, so...he headed for the hospital., which apparently had a backup generator, and hoped the building could look after itself.

In fairness, the destruction Sphere and the ability to add it to some physical attacks, along with adding various powers and effects, makes it really easy to do most of the other Wizards from Fairy Tail.

Do you want to roll Arcana,
To see if you can send it back?
Without such roles you have knowledge that you laaaack.
Can you roll me such a knowledge?
If you do I'll tell you things!
About banishing such a creature back to the beyond.
With such a roll I can tell you duration.
And even speak about the risks,
'Cos without you could call up a Basilisk!
Do you want to roll Arcana?
It doesn't have to be Arcana.
It could be Planes.

The odd prophet bowed waved briefly to Saraki. "Hello, Saraki. Um, yes. I mean, no. I mean, yes, but not this village. The other village. The one in the desert."

His eyes glazing, he announced in a deep, throaty voice, "Harken unto these words, that the man who seeks the flames of creation sits near. He wishes to bring forth that which is in the domain of Gods, and will settle not for anything less than perfection. Tremble, though, before what that perfection might mean for those who are less than so."

His eyes snapping back into focus, he continued, "Some of the people have been going out, looking over where there used to be oasis', old springs, deep wells. Places where farms could be made without magic. Not that's there anything wrong with magic, of course, but some people think the water it makes tastes funny. Personally, I like water I don't have to boil or sieve, but that's another matter. Anyway, one of them went to where there was an oasis, about 20 miles from here, and poof! There was a village."

Scratching his chin, the Oracle added, "Thing is, we looked out that way six months or so ago - there was talk of a raider or slaver camp and we wanted to see if we could smash them - but Elie's people camped at that oasis, and there was no village." He waggled his eyebrows.

"Fascinating," Redemption murmured, "But what was that voice in the middle?"

"Voice?" Xandrious replied, looking confused.

Again, it's not well worded, but you all get a minimum of +1. Simply having someone in the position will net a gain.

Mihara -The reduction is a minimum of 1 turn, no modifier applied automatically. However, the bonus for the second part is meant to be modifier. I'll go clarify the wording in a few minutes.

And yes, I can switch out something for dex.

Aibek - The DC to see if everyone is happy and such will go up by 1 for every 100 people in the city without a High Priest, representing religious strife between groups and factions as more worshippers enter the city.

Selena - I can add Wisdom if you like. It could be argued a wise diplomat is more important than a charming one.

Azri - Lich like to craft,
Enhance the gifts of the past,
With the might of witchcraft
In the night.

So intelligent and wise.
Sees through all enemy lies,
but cannot eat the pies
Tragedy!

So open windows and doors.
Bring your wares to our shores,
For it is craft she adores,
Fair Azri.

Dear Friend

As you know, I, Valda Simmons, am holding a party at the Sanctuary Bar. Because I find you amusing, interesting or know you occasionally reduce those that offend me into something that looks a nasty ketchup accident I am sending you this invite. Remember to bring it because I assure you, you'll miss half the fun without it.

Love and kisses

Valda

Good evening, and welcome to Fevered Dreams. The set up for this game is a series of shorter modules, set in the modern day world. The twist is that you're privy to the Other Side, the underbelly of magic that exists within the world.

Fevered Dreams is a modern campaign, set in today's world. Your character is fully aware that magic exists, as they have some of the supernatural about themselves. Perhaps they have no idea as to the wider realities of such things, and perhaps they're a fully trained spellcaster who has been taught to fight the the dark things that prey on unsuspecting mortals. Either way, you're about to learn a lot more.

Because I'll be using a fair few house rules, combined with new background, most of the information is housed on the Fevered Dreams Website to make it easier to edit.

Character Creation

Spoiler:

Character Build

Level: 5 plus a CR +1 Template. If you like, you can swap a level out and make it a +2 Template. If you choose a template which increases in CR at a later level we will discuss then any balance issues that might arise. Please note that any level restrictions remain in place, but alignment restrictions are removed so long as it makes sense.
I should note that picking a Template simply to make yourself awesome isn't the best plan here. I would suggest choosing one that fits the character, not fitting a character around a Template.
Stats: 25 points buy. You also get an additional +1 from 4th level.
Race: Any race that can pull off looking human is acceptable. This needs to function at all times, without equipment or duration limits.
Class: Most classes are acceptable. However, classes that walk around with wild animals or unusual creatures may have some difficulty in getting around. The Vigilante is also an effective choice, as most of the game will remain in the town of Fever.
Divine based classes should choose a favoured weapon that makes sense for there personal religious leanings.
Books: All Official Paizo products is good, with the exception of the Sacred Geometry feat. That thing was evil.
Stuff from Super/Rogue Genius Games is fine, with the exception of the Eldritch Godling.
The Spheres of Power rules system by Drop Dead Studios is accepted merrily and even encouraged. Those who have access to the Spheres of Might early access may use it, on the understanding that you will need to update as it does.
Pack Magic by Radiance House is also acceptable.
You may also use Psionics and Path of War by Dreamscarred Press.
Other Third-Party material on request. I will need some way to review it, however.
Starting Funds: $5500
Other Rules: Both Background Skills and Automatic Bonus Progression are in use.
Traits: Two traits, one from the cunningly crafted list below, or three with a Drawback.
I will also consider Christina Style’s Major Drawbacks in exchange for a bonus feat or two more traits, but it will really have to be a drawback for you. No sneakily taking Magically Inept as a Fighter.

Campaign Traits

Arcane Battery
Ever since you were a child an excess of magic has caused sparks in your life. Valda taught you how to master this ability, and save money on batteries.
Benefit: You can recharge electrical items, a surprisingly useful ability, and additional add 1d3 electrical damage to melee attacks.

Business Associate
You have worked for a time with Valda, and it comes with a few benefits.
Benefit: You gain an additional $1000 plus $500 per level at each level up.

Former Student
Modern spellcasters need to deal with a camera in every person's pocket. Valda made sure you know how to, occasionally, you need to be a little more stealthy.
Benefit: Gain 1 Modern skill as a class skill. Once a day you may cast a spell as though you have both the Silent and Still spell metamagic feats.

Local
You know the town of Fever, and some of the secrets within.
Benefit: Gain a +2 to Knowledge (Local) and make it a class skill.

Old Family
Your family has an old connection the Other. Regardless of the situatiion with your family, Pride in your blood stiffens your resolve
Benefit: Gain a +1 to Will, and an additional +1 against Charm and Fear effects.

Touched by the Twilight
For whatever reason you have an odd connection to the Twilight, and can see into the ruined landscape among other things.
Benefit: Three times per day you can see through up to one foot of stone or other material, or into the Twilight.

House Rules

Equipment

A few final notes and quirks, to scare off those who remain.

Social interaction, both between party members and NPC's is a must. I will occasionally detour into characters personal stories, run one-on-one games and other oddities. Having your character be a 2d poster that only blends into life when there is something to murder will leave you bored a lot, and less likely to be chosen.

One of the things you'll note is that keeping the Other Side secret is a big thing in this game. Yes, I have listed Rocket Launchers as a weapon. And other unpleasant weapons. But you'll need a way to smuggle those through town if you want to use them. The same applies to monstrous, dragon-like pets, glowing eyes, angelic wings...if you can't look like a business man heading for a jog, you might want to rethink.

I will be basing applications on writing and character first, mechanics second. This means two things - one, I won't be looking to fill traditional roles. If the party rolls out with six monks, then the Monks Strike Back we shall play. Create the character you want, not the roll you think I'm most likely to pick, and I'll accommodate the game to make sure the party is at least functional. Secondly, make sure you create a real live character rather than AmNumbers. You might make the finest cluster of numbers possible, but I'm less likely to pick you if that's all I see. I would suggest either the usual Appearance, Personality and History, the 10 Minute Character Background or a combination of the two, but however you think will make your character come alive.

And as a final note, due to the nature of the this game I may be adding additions to the background, skills, feats, etc. Feel free to update and alter your character to reflect these changes after acceptance

Nigrum - Hunting the Great White Kobold

Aibek - To Wake Up Dreaming

We'll continue to use this for OOC and all that jazz. Anyone who isn't in the thread but wants to keep up to date, feel free to dot in it.

Azri, run me through what you want to craft. You probably have the materials (hence the vague 'Alchemical Materials') but if you need scrolls or help from other casters, we can do stuff.

Mihara, I'm enjoying your story so far. I'll start putting it (and Azri's essays) on the website when I have the energy. So maybe later tonight, after my regular roleplaying shenanigans. Kinda buzzed now I'm not working or being threatened by angry people.

Also, as per the request, the Website has been linked at the top of the game.

Well, that'll be a possible story for you guys...

Speaking of which, once this section is complete (it shouldn't take long - this was an option two levels and Mythic Power up ago. Poor Slaver Zombie Boss. He's not looking forward to this) we'll be taking a short break. During that time I'll be finishing the city rules and tweeking Mass Combat a little. There are two things to do during this period.

1 - In character, it'll be a three-month break. I would like to do, either as a one-on-one roleplay or as a short story, a little side tale from you guys. Mihara could set her family up, Azri could research her condition, Nigrum could beat some people senseless while being badly dubbed, whatever it is you fancy. This isn't mandatory, just for fun and character development.

2 - Each of you, during the next module, will somehow come into possession of a bodyguard unit. Essentially they'll mostly be there to allow you to join Mass Combats and help guard things. I haven't gotten the specifics down yet, but I would like you guys to think of how your characters might come across such beings, and who they are. So Mihara might recruit her family, Selena might grab a brothel's worth of pretty people and train them, Azri might find a small cabal of fellow undead trying to be not-evil and recruit them...etc.

Time passed, as time does, and with Celestial aid the city was restored to the state it had been in before your arrival. Indeed, and perhaps not surprisingly, the Hosts of Elysium made some small, subtle improvements. Probably the least subtle was the circle of runes now encompassing each Islands edge, hopefully to prevent such incursions from the lower realms.

Most of the work was simply resolidifying the bones of the city, and repairing the vast mechanism that allowed Nexus to function. The Infernal corruption was torn from it and fresh gears of blessed metals and stones were inserted to replace those lost. This restored some of Nexus' power...but the massive crystal core in the six smaller towers remained silent, inoperative.

On the third day the Host set down their tools, the work complete. Khalharum was in a better state than it had been when you had left. The village was cleaner, the food stores replenished for a month, medicinal herbs granted to the makeshift healer's tent that had been set up. Perhaps more, a peace that seemed to inspire the imagination hung over the city.

City Trait - Elysium's Calm - Craft Checks and other checks to create something permanent gain a +1 Bonus.

As the sun fades the Host of Theric gathers in the town square, a soft hymn in the air as they gather the forces required to send you home. The people of the town come and watch. In the centre sits the mighty Theric, who smiles and hands each of you a gift.

To Nigrum, he passes the reforged Tsui - now crafted from Adamantium, runes of Draconic and Celestial embedded into the hilt, but nothing mars the perfection of the blade.
Tsui is now an Adamantium +1 Merciful weapon.

Selena was granted a fine Unfettered Shirt

Mihara was given a pair of velvet Glyphbane Gloves.

Ayreth was given a pair of redShoes of Lightning Leaping.

Aibek was handed a handcrafted and complete set of Deck of Illusion cards.

And Azri was given a perfect Scarlet and Blue Ioun Sphere.

Gifts given, the titan added his voice to choir. A calm power flowed through the city, gently weaving with each stone, each brick, each ruined building and standing wall. It infused the city as the music brought images of home, of loved ones left behind, of the places where the heart ached to return.

Slowly, the music built up and reached a cresecendo...and then silence.

With a glance around, it became apparently that you were back on Stonespine Island. The Celestials were gone and the heat of the sun thundered into you like a hammer, it's harsh and brutal light so different to where you had been moments before.

Still, you had the sensation - there was no place like home.

We'd need something the tyres won't melt on. Whose up for plundering the nearest national guar base for a tank?

"Eh, they'll claim someone spiked the water, air, etc. Some political asshat will claim that this is why we need to blow up whichever people they're currently trying to vilify, Nazi-style, to rally the crowds. Then people will vote for the asshat, because clearly those people are evil, somehow." Valda shrugged. "Crazy is what people do. Most of the people here will buy it, because obviously an entire city getting teleported to the realm of fire is crazy, and the few that don't will either keep their traps shut or be labelled insane. 'Poor dears, shouldn't have sucked down so much of the crazy gas, I'm glad I'm not like them.' And wait until you see the Health Insurance spike this one will cause. Whoo. Glad I'm not a poor person." Valda certainly didn't have views or anything.

Nodding at the red spot, Valda shrugged. "Who wants to go knocking on hell's oven door?"

Miselle will be fine with bluffing that we're going to hurt, harm, remove bodily parts, etc. Actually doing so...not so much. It'll require saving lives in the short term to convince her.

Tapping the barrel of the Unreasonably Big Gun into the man's groin, Valda added, "Allow me to condense this. How? Why? And how do we correct it?" Pulling back the hammer, she added, "Answer my riddles three, or without thy nuts shall thee be."

"Hi, remember me? Valda Simmons. Nice to see you again. Now, here's the thing - I don't enjoy second degree burns. They hurt. I have received just such burns from the elementals you guys called up. I am not in my happy place." Valda aimed the unreasonably large gun she had built at his genitals. "Answer our questions, or I will remove your happy place in a permanent and spectacular fashion. And no, having your junk shot off will not prove terminal. You might wish it did, but you'll live. So if you make me do it, I'll find more bits to shoot off. Welcome to my bad day place."

Speaking of married, it's my wedding anniversary, so I may be slow to post.

Rubbing her mouth to hide the smile as Isagoras' reaction, Valda waited to see what the man made of the whole thing. She was very diplomatic, and didn't ask what they could make using an E-bay scam.
