While not totally related to your OP, Hangman's Noose would also be an excellent choice for a Halloween one shot.
** spoiler omitted **
It worked for my group. We played Saturday night by candle-light. I got a "prop" for each NPC, as the module suggested. My players and I talked a little about the module ahead of time, and there are a few things where they had to "play along". But overall, everyone had fun, so I chalk it up to a success.
Spoiler:
I really played up the bit about Halgark sewing on his own toes. My whole group was grossed out.
Amen brother! I wish we could all just play nice and be happy. Honestly, in this case, everyone wins. Those who like 4E have 4E. Those who like 3.5 have 3.5 or Pathfinder. We all have a fun game to play. Everybody Wins! How often in life do we get to say that. Everybody Wins!
Seriously, some one please explain to me why we are *still* having this argument.
Because there are folks here that are so pissed off at WotC that they want us all to suffer. They don't want us to be happy playing the game of our own choice because they are not happy.
I think you're right. Some folks feel completely invalidated if someone else is happy minding their own business, doing their own thing. I don't get it.
Let's all make a pact to rise above it. *Puts fist into center of group* Who's with me?
But why come here if it was WotC that pissed people off? Since they can't kick WotC they come here to kick the nearest 4e player? WTF?
I'll agree with CWM here. As I posted on those cartoon threads in an effort to avoid the oncoming trainwreck I suggested those offended write an angry email to WotC customer service. The 4e folks here aren't WotC. It's not their fault the PR at WotC is insensitive, and posting angry about perceived 'insults' isn't getting us anywhere. Transference of your anger on someone else isn't fair. It's no more justifiable than the guy who gets dumped on at work and comes home and beats his kids to feel better.
I thought the cartoon was kind of silly, and that's it. But even if I had been genuinely offended, that's not CWM's fault, or Bugleyman's or anyone else who happens to enjoy 4E. To take it out on them would be, at the very least, not cool.
Seriously, there are so few of us RPGers, can we quit fighting each other? [joke] We've got jocks lining up to steal our milk money. We need to stick together [/joke]

I'd like to make a cleric, if that's OK. I'll need some particularly obnoxious god of justice or something of the sort. A god that encourages self-righteousness and the handing out of pamphlets.
Ivo's character sheet should be updated now. Since bard and rogue are the halflings two favored classes would Factotum which is kind of a combination of both be one? If so then HP is 10 instead of 9. I'll work on background, but briefly Ivo's background including being associated with the High temple of Hwyrdd in its search for artifacts and history, through family connections.
OK, I have to ask some stupid questions since I've never done this before. Where can I access these "virtual character sheets"?
Okay. We have seven players so far. That is about the max that I want to run, so as of now enrollment is closed. Our group consists of Gin, Jolly Roger, James Keegan, Firbolg, Khaladon, Pavel, and Seeker of Shadows. Look for an introductory post sometime Monday.
Okay, this is the home of my Scarred Lands campaign. We will be using the Scarred Land setting with Pathfinder Beta. We will be focusing on Ghelespad for the time being. All the races from Pathfinder Baeta and the various Scarred Lands books are open, so long as they have a +0LA. All classes are open from Beta. If you would like to use a non-core class let me know what class and what supplement it's in and I will review it and let you know.
I am sorry that the context did not carry over. The pot shot was not for the choice of 3e over 4e but the desire to see WotC employees lose their jobs because they dared to make a new edition of D&D.
Not at all. *I* didn't make myself clear. I wasn't accusing you of taking "pot shots". It's frustrating when a minority of individuals poke into a conversation just to make negative remarks. I wish these few individuals on both sides would quit it.
See CWM and I can get along....maybe there is hope for world peace =)
I think that a lot of players will go back to Pathfinder. I am looking forward to buying it when it is released.
I think you need to pull your hood a little tighter Leafer - the WotC hate is seeping through.
I think a lot of people will play both. I hope a lot of people will introduce their children, nieces, nephews and friends to their favorite. Thus far, I like Pathfinder. It seems Mr. CWM likes 4E. Well, there is a Pathfinder and there is a 4E, so with both win. Honestly, how many times in life do we get to say everyone wins. Everyone has a fun game to play...everyone wins!
*throws confetti and silly string*
CWM, this post isn't directed at you, I'm just responding to you. I agree with you that we should all play our games without taking pot-shots at the "other side".
If it looks like Awesome...and it smells like Awesome...it's probably AWESOME!
My first shipment was earlier this month, with issues 12 and 13. I had ordered a couple other things with it and got a free Pathfinder Companion and a booster pack of item cards. Thanks Paizo!!! I'm in love...
I don't follow your meaning about Pathfinder rpg? My point was that, this edition change differs from previous ones (where it's true dissenters eventually caved due to not getting new product for their preferred older version of the game) because this time (unlike those other times) we have a choice - in Pathfinder, and other tpp OGL products.
Maybe. The difference is only in that products for 3.5 will continue to be released. WotC didn't burn all your old 3.5 material when they changed editions. If a group wanted to stick with 3.5, they could easily stick with 3.5 regardless of Pathfinder's existence.

I think it's a difference, but not a major difference.

I'd like to know how 4e is nearer in feel to 2e, than 3e was? Imo that's an absurd comment, and probably not one WotC would want to be true anyway.
I have no idea, it's not me who has been saying it. Then again, I have difficulty understanding people who say that 4th Edition doesn't have the "feel" of D&D.
Honestly, I genuinely wonder if I'm in the majority or the minority:
1. I buy Pathfinder stuff because I like it.
2. At the moment, I don't buy D&D stuff because I don't really like 4E. Is it a bad game? Of course not, it's just not my bag baby
3. I hope that 4E is a rip-roaring success and for those that like it, I hope they have fun playing it for years and years to come.
4. I hope that Pathfinder is a rip-roaring success and for those that like it, I hope they have fun playing for years and years to come.
5. I hope that Runequest is a rip-roaring success.
6. I hope that Shadowrun is a rip-roaring success...
Blah, blah blah...you get the rest. We all have different tastes. Why do some individuals have to get bent out of shape about who plays which game? I don't get it [this is directed at no one in particular]. However, my brain is about the size of a peanut, so maybe there are issues I genuinely don't understand.
As a far as "will I eventually come around to someone else's point of view"...maybe, who knows, I've changed my mind on occasion. But sometimes I also make decisions, based strictly on my tastes, and my tastes don't change. Does that make me closed minded? Or a bad person? Or an old far so stuck in her ways...blah blah blah... I don't think so. At the end of the day, I'm not trying to take away anyone's fun.
I'm sorry, I really don't want to minimize anyone's feelings. But every time I see an "edition war" thread, my brain just starts bleeding. Can we stop? Can we stop belittling the "other side"?
So, in addition to buying all the 4e stuff and all the Paizo stuff, you now need to spend all your time converting the APs to 4th edition rules. Won't your wife will appreciate the fact that, not only do you spend twice as much money, but now you have no time to spend with her, either?!
Nah. We have a good arrangement. We throw on a podcast, she knits, I crack open my laptop, and we share some quality multi-tasking time.
Man, I am so lucky that both the husband and I play RPGs. He never played before we got married though. I had to convert him. He wouldn't eat Chinese food either. I've had a lot of work to do, but he's been worth it ;)
EDIT: I *still* have a lot of work to do. A woman's work is never done...or some such nonsense.
Couldn't happen to a nicer gaming company, and I mean that sincerely. You guys set the bar for both quality and customer service. Just imagine next year's GenCon!
I'm already working on getting permission from the wife to be there (with her) for our anniversary...darn that Indy timing.
Amen! I'll celebrate by opening a nice bottle of wine and ordering some more Paizo products. I don't have that Harrow Deck yet.
I have no idea. But I just ordered Beta Pathfinder and should have it in my hot little gypsy hands soon. So that's one download that equals a purchase!
You're not afraid of a friendly game of "Who's the Better Fortune Teller", are you? Let's see what the cards say...oh, that doesn't look good... Maybe you should avoid zoos for a while...no reason really, just saying...
Fine....
Well, you seem to be nothing but lucky: According to the cards, that'll clear up with a Cure Disease potion and a little bedrest.

It may be derived from "Paitso," but I doubt they'd admit to us if it did. AFter all, it's the Goblin word for "stretchy nasal mucus". Sounds much cooler for them to pluck a word out of a made-up language like Greek :)
Cool! Another evil gypsy woman. We should get together and play cards.
My gaming library, lovingly compiled over the years, combined with my husband's and expanded greatly during our marriage (nearly 22 years and still going!) fills up three and a half bookcases. And one and a half of that is all D&D, AD&D and various incarnations through the decades.
4E is not among them.
Congrats! The husband and I are just reaching our 10th. We collected everything D&D until 3.5, then we slowed down a bit and got into 3rd party stuff. We hadn't realized how poor the quality of some WotC products was until we looked at some other offerings. We have a huge collected of Scarred Lands, DCC, and Necromancer Games. But our new love is Paizo. Paizo rescued us when we thought we had lost our favorite game.
I guess that's the long way of saying "I'm with you, sister".
Oh, and I'm relatively new...don't suppose I could have one of those cookies...please?
Room 1 - There is an interesting pool, what should I put in it?
You can't go wrong with water weirds (Do these even exist anymore?). A big hand made out of water, reaches up and smacks one of the PC's. Always good for a laugh...for the DM of course.
I've always wanted to write a on-shot adventure in some fictitious city where everything is ultra-over-the-top politically correct D&D style. For example, citizens would be shocked at the use of the word "barbarian" because the proper term is "civilization challenged".
I wanted the PCs to have to go to that City for a very simple task, say collecting some spell reagent, and have it turn into a labor of Hercules to try to complete the task without offending everyone in the City.
Gods forbid the PCs try to attack a goblin or something. They'd be assaulted by Goblins' Rights Activists. There would be shrinks all over trying to help the giants get in touch with their halfling sides. Any other ideas?
Also, just wanted to be the first to say "Granny Weatherwax".
Arg beat me too it, oh well I'll still one up you and say that Nanny Ogg would be a great DnD character and is really well written if you've met someone like her (which I have).
But then Pratchett rights awesome female characters, Tiffany Aching, Cheery Littlebottom, Sergeant Angua, the list can go on and on with Pratchett.
Let's not forget Susan from Hogfather. I love Susan. She's brainy and practical. She doesn't need anyone's help to get anything done. And everyone knows to not get in her way.
This is my first post on these boards. And I'm only posting to say "I quit". I am done buying quality products that my gaming buddies enjoy. From now on, I will be finding other sources where I can spend twice the cash on half the value.
Oh...and if there's no armadillo race in the PHB...then I have no time for your speciesist game!
