I'm also not sure how Ranzak auto-passed the BA Wisdom/Perception 5 check, and he also has not displayed Banner of the Ancient Kings from Korundo's turn.

Because I misread it as a Survival check (at +3) when I was checking the numbers?

Let's roll the dice for that .. Wisdom 5: 2d4 ⇒ (1, 1) = 2 Nope - Ranzak needs to take two poison damage (Snake and Reformarium Servant would have been the obvious choices). He would also have drawn two more cards when he reset his hand (Grappler's Mask & Blood Periapt).

The Banner of the Ancient Kings is more of an issue.

When I first got this in my hand there was a question raised on Discord as to why I hadn't displayed the banner. I said that I felt it was more valuable to have the option of using the banner to remove scourges, which was why I didn't display it immediately and have it banished the first time somebody failed a combat check.

I also explicitly stated in the "support" section that the banner could be displayed and buried to remove scourges - I did not say it could be displayed to add to combat checks.

I hadn't noticed that Korundo had asked for that to take place.

This is made even more complicated by the fact that on his turns Radovan assumed the Banner was displayed.

Ranzak and Radovan head off to the Ravine.

Ranzak explores, and finds a Warband.
Summon a random Monster - a Ghoul (combat 13). That's not nice!

Reveal Hand Crossbow, recharge blowgun to add 1d8
Combat 13: 1d10 + 1 + 1d6 + 1d8 ⇒ (8) + 1 + (5) + (6) = 20 defeats the ghoul.
As Ranzak defeated his Ghoul, the Warband is defeated.

Radovan gets to fight his own Ghoul, though.

Ranzak has no way to explore again, so will end his turn.
He resets his hand, drawing his Retriever
(What's a goblin doing with a dog?)

I'm still confused.

I thought we were saying which two upgrades we were interested in.

Shouldn't we get two upgrades?

[ooc]Ranzak draws Mighty Gugmuff XXXII (an Ally 2) and a Blessing of Venkelvore (a Blessing 1), both from the "Goblins Fight!" deck. He will keep the Ally (replacing his Vulture), but discard the Blessing.

For his regular deck upgrades he would pick

Armor 2: 1d1000 ⇒ 880 (Tooled Crocodile Skin [UC])
Weapon 2: 1d1000 ⇒ 359 (Venomous Hand Crossbow +1 [UC])

If he gets the Armor he will take Armor as his card feat,
otherwise he will choose item (Blood Periapt [UC])

Just confirming I'm doing this right:

For drawing a Blessing/Ally from the box I take all the appropriate cards from my class deck box (in this case all the level 1 or level 2 cards of the specified type from my "Goblins Fight" deck and my "Ultimate Combat" deck), and select one of them at random. That card is part of my hand at the end of the game, and I can choose to keep that card in my deck (discarding some other card, if necessary). This does not count as a Deck Upgrade (even though it functions in a very similar way).

I'll let you know about the deck upgrades, card feat, etc. While a Weapon 2 might be interesting, we also get to draw a Blessing 1/2 and an Ally 1/2, so those are also likely to provide good upgrade possibilities (especially since Ranzak also has the Ultimate Combat deck to consider)

In case anyone hasn't seen the henchman Charmed Squealy Nord, the card says
"If evaded or defeated by a non-combat check, display this card next to the scenario."

(I happen to have the "Season of the Goblins" deck, so I didn't have to ask the GM for details).
I didn't know exactly what displaying the card next to the scenario would do, but it was a reasonable guess that as this card only shows up at the very end of the game when you're eventually fighting the villain it would factor into the rewards we earned.
That's why Ranzak chose to evade the card, even though he would almost certainly have been able to defeat it
(Combat 9, rolling 1d10+2 + 1d4+1 + 1d4 + 1d8; the non-combat checks are somewhat harder).

It turns out this was a good decision - that's what got us the bonus deck upgrade

Another Skinsaw Cultist? Ranzak fights this one just like the last one
Combat 11: 1d10 + 2 + 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 2 + (5) + 1 = 13 with the same result.
Ranzak 2 - Skinsaw Cultists 0

Relying on his bow yet again:
Combat 11: 1d10 + 2 + 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 2 + (2) + 1 = 13 Ranzak dispatches his cultist, too.

Ranzak encounters a not-a-goblin Cultist
Combat 9: 1d10 + 2 + 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 2 + (4) + 1 = 11 but an arrow from his trusty Shortbow soon deals with that problem!

Discard Poog to explore again and deal with the Trapped passageway;
play blessing of Hagredash to add one die to the check
Dexterity 9: 2d10 + 2 ⇒ (10, 4) + 2 = 16 Trap defeated; Explore again

At the far end of the passageway Ranzak spots a Faceless Stalker.
Calling on Erastil for aid, Ranzak looses another arrow from his bow.
Combat 12+2: 3d10 + 2 + 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6, 4, 8) + 2 + (2) + 1 = 23 the Stalker is no more.

Ranzak's deck upgrade (a Blessing B) will be to take a Blessing of Erastil from the Ultimate Combat deck.

In addition, he will replace his banished Potion of Healing with Flight Arrows (a B Basic item, also from Ultimate Combat)

For the next scenario (assuming we're playing that) he will, as usual, replace his Confusion spell with Fire Sneeze, and replace Xoff with Poog of Zarongel. He will also be accompanied by his new cohort Squealy Nord.

Ranzak will start by giving his Stalking Armor to Gobloch.

Next, he will play his Blessing of Lady Lastbreath to draw a card from somebody else's discard pile,
and move away to somewhere safe (the Alchemical Workshed looks good).

I hope either Gobloch or Gobgraz has a useful blessing somewhere in his discard pile - if so, Ranzak will choose that.

He will then banish his Potion of Healing, healing 1d4 ⇒ 2.
The cards shuffled in are his Force Shortbow +1 and a Blessing of Lamashtu
Finally, he dismisses his Vulture (which didn't seem to be getting on with his parrot).

End turn, drawing three cards (and hoping for that blessing).
And he gets it, on the third and final card (and with two cards left in his deck, so he can play two blessings and still have enough cards left to replace them)

I believe it's still Ranzak's turn, but we're currently waiting for Gobloch's response before Ranzak posts - what Ranzak does is dependent on what Gobloch plans to do. (In particular, Ranzak needs to know whether to hand his Stalking Armor to Gobloch at the start of the turn.)

How many blessings do we have available?

Ranzak can take care of the Big Ol' Owly Thing BYA check (in the worst case he recharges his Armor, but most of the time he doesn't have to do that).

The Combat check is the main problem - 1d10+1d6+2 isn't very good against DC15. That's where blessings would be appreciated.

The final closing check is Dexterity 6. Ranzak has d10+2 + d4+2, so he can't fail!

If anyone has better odds Ranzak is quite prepared to wait, but I think he's probably our best chance to succeed.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I believe your shirt re-roll should have been 1d6+5. Still good enough, though!

Ranzak has nothing that can help with the closing check.

Off-turn: Discard Blessing of Hadregash to assist with Gobloch's closing check

Ranzak heads to the Farmhouse to join his companions.
"Did you see the fearsome creature I found hiding in that shed? Did it come this way?"

He looks around suspiciously, but doesn't see any bloody feathers.
Gharsk, however, does tell him there's another Piggy here!

In preparation, banish Bladeguard to draw Force Shortbow from discard pile
Ranzak checks his possessions, then heads off to search for Piggy.

Recharging Compass to assist with the BYA check (Squealy Nord's power)
BYA Dexterity/Acrobatics 9: 1d10 + 2 + 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 + (3) + 2 = 9 Whew!
@Gobgraz & Gharsk: You need to make that check too, or take 1d4 Fire damage.

using Shortbow and discarding Blessing of Zarongel to add two dice
Combat 14: 1d10 + 2 + 1d6 + 1 + 2d10 ⇒ (10) + 2 + (6) + 1 + (9, 3) = 31 Overkill again!
@GM: Yet another vanquished piggy runs off to the Warrens, squealing as he goes!

Closing check: Random monster #1 is a Shock Elemental - Combat 9+2
Discarding Shortbow Combat 11: 1d10 + 2 + 1d6 + 1 + 2d4 ⇒ (8) + 2 + (2) + 1 + (4, 3) = 20
The Farmhouse is now closed.

End turn and reset hand, drawing four (known) cards:
Gem of Physical Perfection, Emerald of Dexterity, Stalking Armor, and Blessing of Lady Lastbreath.

And shouldn't Piggy have run off to a random unoccupied location (i.e. the Warrens)?
And the Big Ol' Owly Thing, come to that - it's getting crowded there!

You'll normally get it back at the end of the game. I'm not sure what would happen if I banished the card, but I don't plan to do that :-)

Thanks, Gharsk! We're making progress!
I had a Blessing of the Gods from Harsk's deck; I discarded it for an extra die on the close.

Ranzak succesfully closed the Alchemical Workshed.

1d4 ⇒ 2

Using Squealy Nord's power and recharging Stalking Armor to add 1d4+2

Dexterity 9: 1d10 + 2 + 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 + (4) + 2 = 18 Well, that's certainly a Success!

Ranzak doesn't have any way to help Harsk with a survival check.

Of course Ranzak isn't at the same location as Harsk now, so he can't use that power anyway. Next turn, perhaps ...

Ranzak follows Harsk to the Dying Garden.

Using his Thieves' Tools, Ranzak tackles the Slashing Blade trap Harsk has discovered.
Disable 9: 2d10 + 3 ⇒ (9, 6) + 3 = 18 The trap is disarmed.

"WWPD?", thinks Ranzak. He'd explore! (Discards Poog to explore again)
There's a Goblin Dog lurking here! (which, oddly enough, doesn't have the Goblin trait)

Ranzak doesn't like dogs of any kind, goblin or not. He draws his Animalbane Dagger
Combat 9: 1d10 + 2 + 1d4 + 1 + 1d8 ⇒ (1) + 2 + (4) + 1 + (7) = 15 So much for the dog.

@Everyone: Ranzak now has his Blessing of Lady Lastbreath

This has a very interesting power:
Instead of your move step, recharge this card to draw a card from the discard pile of another character at your location, then move.

So, basically, Ranzak can rummage through your discard pile to find a card he likes, then run away with it. This may be an interesting way to get a card you discarded back into play (albeit in Ranzak's hand). But if Ranzak combines this with his ability to hand you a card at the start of his turn we'd still end up with the same number of cards, but you would have one more card in your hand, and one less in your discard pile.

Would anyone be interested in this?
In particular, on this turn, would Harsk be interested?
If so, what cards could Ranzak take from your discard pile? And which of the cards from Ranzak's hand would you accept in payment?

(Ranzak is probably going to move on this turn anyway)

Ranzak sees the old chest Harsk points out, and dashes over to it.

He gazes into his latest shiny toy (recharges the Gem of Physical Prowess to substitute Constitution), and Constitution 8: 1d12 ⇒ 12 opens the chest. Inside he finds 1d4 ⇒ 1 random items - a Compass!

Throwing it aside, Ranzak looks for more treasure. (Discard Compass to explore)

He finds the skin of a sea creature that has been fashioned into some kind of garment. (Sharkskin Armor) He tries wriggling into it
Fortitude 7: 1d12 + 1 + 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 + (4) + 1 = 12 - it's quite a good fit!

It's Piggy! (a henchman) BYA Dexterity 9: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Ranzak attempts to dodge as the creature charges, but he's very clumsy today, and trips (it must be the fault of that new armor).
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1 Ranzak throws the armor away in disgust.

He turns and looks for the beast that knocked him over.
He takes careful aim with his Force Shortbow (discarding it to add 2d4)Combat 14: 1d10 + 2 + 1d6 + 1 + 2d4 ⇒ (8) + 2 + (2) + 1 + (3, 3) = 19, and his arrow strikes true! Unfortunately the wound is not fatal, and the creature runs away.
As per the scenario rules, it will get shuffled into a random unoccupied location

@Everyone:The closing check is Strength/Perception 8. Ranzak can use his Emerald of Dexterity to give himself a d10 instead of a d4, and use his Blessing of Lamashtu to get a second d10. Do we think that's enough? If we fail that will be 5 cards to burn through.

I'm going to be slow on this turn, too - it's my turn in the Outpost game I'm playing, and the players at the table I'm running have just completed the scenario. I'm going to be a little busy ...

And assuming I've still got that, I get to use it to add to my closing check, too.
That gives me 1d10+2 + 1d20 without a blessing.
(Ranzak only has 1d10+2 for Dexterity - he doesn't have Acrobatics)

I'd have thought that with two of us trying to temp close the Warrens we've got a very good chance to do that without the blessing, if it would help defeat the villain.

Ranzak can also discard his crossbow to add 1d4+1 to a combat check, and Harsk should be able to recharge a card to add 1d4+1

I misspoke - for Dexterity, Ranzak only has 1d10+2 (plus 1d4), so he does need to roll
Oops! DC 5: 1d10 + 2 + 1d4 ⇒ (9) + 2 + (3) = 14 ...but he still made it.

Off Turn: Discard Blessing of Hagredash as requested by Gobloch

"This area is getting overrun by with monsters!"
Ranzak sneaks back to the Warrens in the hope of a quieter time.
He spots a scroll that Harsk has partially uncovered.

Wisdom 6: 2d4 ⇒ (3, 3) = 6 Somewhat to his surprise, Ranzak retrieves the scroll without damaging it.

Explore Again 3: 1d6 ⇒ 4 - Yes
"More treasure! More treasure!" Ranzak excitedly continues to search.
There's yet another crossbow hanging on a bush - Ranzak snags it.
Ranzak can't fail a Dexterity 5 check - he's got 1d10+3 + 1d4

Explore Again 3: 1d6 ⇒ 4 - Yes
"What else is here? Oh, look! There's a bottle under the bush!"
Potion of Striding Intelligence 4: 2d4 ⇒ (2, 2) = 4 Ranzak takes that as well.

Explore Again 3: 1d6 ⇒ 6
Ranzak's cries have attracted the attention of a longshanks, who is watching him with interest. Ranzak attempts to enlist the longshanks to his cause.
Night Watch Charisma 6: 1d6 + 1d4 ⇒ (1) + (2) = 3
The watchman is unimpressed, and wanders away.

Oh well. Discard Alchemist's Fire and War Razor - end turn.

Ranzak doesn't fancy the Faceless Stalker, so he decides to see what can be found at the Mill.

The first thing he finds is a Blessing of the Gods, which he picks up.

Explore Again (3): 1d6 ⇒ 2 Not unless you pay.

Ranzak sends his Vulture out to have a look around.
The Vulture points him to a rather strange looking folding knifey thing It's a War Razor (Weapon 2)
Ranzak flexes his muscle (and secretly calls on the Shiny Eye Thing)
Strength 9: 1d4 + 1d20 ⇒ (1) + (8) = 9 and adds the War Razor to his arsenal.

Odd result, so bury the Light Crossbow, summon & evade
Explore Again (3): 1d6 ⇒ 1 Still no freebies!

Discard Blessing of the Gods to explore again
Near the War Razor was a small shield (a Buckler)
Fortitude 3: 1d12 - 1d4 ⇒ (2) - (2) = 0 but Ranzak doesn't care for it.

That's enough for now! Ranzak ends his turn and draws Alchemist's Fire.

Ranzak will head over to the Warrens (it would be nice to remove the uncertainty of random monster drops)

He finds another Light Crossbow, and picks it up.
(He can't fail the acquire check - he's rolling 1d10+2 + 1d4 to get 4)

Explore again (3): 1d6 ⇒ 3 - Yes.

He spots a Treasure Map, but it's very hard to reach. "I've got just the tool for that!" says Ranzak, and uses his Thieves' Tools to pry the map from its niche.
Recharge 8: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 - No.

The Treasure Map is defeated, so Ranzak examines the top card of his location deck, revealing a Faceless Stalker

"I'll leave that alone for now!"
End turn

Ranzak is feeling strangely confident, for some reason.

He heads over towards the woods, where Goblin Harsk apparently spotted a longshanks. Ranzak sneaks up to where he can see the Bandit Henchman. He can't concentrate because he's lying on something sharp - it must be those Thieves' Tools Gobloch gave him - so he slips them into his pack, then (from cover, naturally) looses a bolt from his Light Crossbow +1 towards the longshanks.
(BYA: recharge Thieves' Tools)

Combat 8: 1d10 + 2 + 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 2 + (3) + 1 = 13 Tee hee!

Ranzak will use the Shiny Eye Thing to help him with his closing check

Survival 7: 1d4 + 3 + 1d20 ⇒ (2) + 3 + (10) = 15 The Woods is now closed.

Ranzak runs off and hides in the woods so none of the others spot his shiny toy. He doesn't notice that he's dropped his Force Shortbow.
Odd result: Bury Force Shortbow, then summon and evade the Fight over the Eye. Ranzak is so selfish ...

Ranzak heads off to Nettlemaze (where he can hide behind Gobloch if anything too nasty shows up)

And, sure enough, the first thing he finds is an Ogre!

(Using his Light Crossbow +1 and the Shiny Eye Thing
Combat 14: 1d10 + 1 + 1d8 + 1 + 1d20 ⇒ (7) + 1 + (7) + 1 + (10) = 26 dispatches the Ogre.

Ranzak sends his Vulture off to scout (Discards Vulture to explore again)
The Vulture returns, hotly pursued by a Werewolf!
Combat 13: 1d10 + 1 + 1d8 + 1 + 1d20 ⇒ (6) + 1 + (3) + 1 + (8) = 19 defeats the Werewolf, too.

Odd result, so bury Potion of Healing, then evade the Fight over the Eye

End turn, draw Animalbane Dagger +1

I'm not intending to trigger the Fight over the Eye - I plan to evade the whole thing. Assuming that works, nobody else gets to make a Combat check.

Ranzak has already earned the Shiny Eye Thing by beating the Longshanks Adventurers (both he and Harsk discard Thieves' Tools to succeed at their skill checks).

During This Scenario wrote:
When you defeat the henchman Longshanks Adventurers, display the support card Shiny Eye Thing next to your deck, then summon and encounter the henchman Fight Over the Eye.

If he evades Fight over the Eye it looks to me as though he'd still keep the Shiny Eye Thing

My Precious!

And here's another interesting corner case. Can Ranzak evade his combat check? (or, for that matter, the whole henchman encounter?)

I think Gobloch failed to notice that a Blessing of Gorum adds two dice to a strength based combat check
(Not that it changes the result, mind you.)

So it's down to Urgraz (at DC 8), then Harsk and I auto-succeed

I think we could both use Thieves' Tools - it auto-defeats the barrier without a check, so it's hard to claim we would both be attempting the same check.

Another argument: You could say you were attempting the Perception check, then play Thieves' Tools to auto-succeed. I could do much the same, but say I was attempting the Stealth check.

Fortitude is the check Urgraz plans to use.

If we aren't allowed to both use Thieves' Tools Ranzak can reveal his Stalking Armor to make his Stealth check 1d10+5 (80%)

My copy of the "Season of the Goblins" (both the PDF and the Drive-Thru Cards deck) don't show the Veteran trait on the Longshanks Adventurers, and there's no text on the card that suggests the difficulty increases based on the scenario number. So I assume the checks to defeat stay at DC 8, not DC 10. (The difficulty increases in a previous scenario were based on the timer, and we don't have that here.)

Presumably the Veteran trait showing on the Longshanks Adventurers card in the current location deck shouldn't really be there.

Ranzak encounters the Longshanks Adventurers (what a surprise!)

I've got Thieves' Tools I could play, which is an auto-defeat for my check.
But I'll wait to see how the other checks go - if I'm going to fail (and take damage) anyway, there's no point in wasting the card.

That's what I thought.
Go away, Summoned Monster - I do not want to play with you! ...

Discard Blessing of Zarongel to explore again

Ranzak is briefly startled when a Skeleton appears from the depths of the cave, but he ducks into an alcove to avoid it and the Skeleton wanders away.

"Bit thin, even for a Longshanks"

"WWPD (What Would Poog Do)", wonders Ranzak. As he is musing his eye is caught by a flash of metal in the alcove. It appears to be some sort of crossbow. Ranzak picks it up for a closer look

Dexterity 8: 1d10 + 2 + 1d4 ⇒ (2) + 2 + (4) = 8 It's a Light Crossbow +1 (a Weapon 2) and decides to keep it.

Explore again (3)?: 1d6 ⇒ 2 No. End of turn.

While technically we have to attempt the checks, there is no mechanical consequence, so there's no real point

@GM: As the monster Ranzak is about to encounter has the Goblin trait, we need to banish it, than Ranzak has to summon and encounter a monster that does not have the Goblin trait.

Q: It's a summoned monster. What happens if I were to evade it? Does it just go away, or does Ranzak's power take precedence and force somebody else to encounter it?

One of these days I'll just have a simple encounter that doesn't run into all sorts of interesting corner cases ...

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I agree! Poog is good friend for goblins!

Ranzak is currently playing through 'Season of the Goblins', and he's got both Poog and Fire Sneeze in his deck. While he can't make best use of Fire Sneeze himself, he's got to have one spell in his deck, so it might as well be something that burns ...

So we all start off at Treacherous Cave.

I'd be perfectly happy keeping the same turn order as last time.

Fire Sneeze is available for any spellcaster who would like it; if nobody speaks up I'll probably discard it on my first turn

Remember we get a bonus deck upgrade, so you should pick two cards.
@GM: could you confirm this, please?

Ranzak wants the weapon 1 - for his 2nd upgrade he'd like a blessing.

Roll off for Weapon 1:
1d1000 ⇒ 650

Ranzak isn't really interested in a Weapon 2, but there is a Weapon 1 he would like.

For his second choice he'd like the best blessing available.

He'll wait to see what else shows up, and who else is competing for the good stuff.

My vote is to continue play during Outpost, but to be prepared for longer delays between posts.

Ranzak chooses Blessing, Blessing, Weapon

We each get a bonus deck upgrade (and a skill feat), right?

Are we planning to try another scenario? A lot of us are going to be kept fairly busy with Outpost, so we might not be able to post quite as regularly, but waiting until Outpost is over would be a long delay!
