You know, with modern computers it is relatively easy to use a geocentric world? Everything is relative, so you could describe the movement of the sun by using the eart as a fixated point. Even planetary movement. I wouldn't say it's very smart, but it is doable. ;)

Most a stuff in this thread is very enjoyable to read. I just wanted to add something in the mix: I recently watched a very interesting presentation in the European Science Education Research Conference about a big percentage of people who accept science and believe in scientism. First one: Great! Second one: Eh... Not so great.
So, what is scientism and why is it a problem: Scientism is the belief that because science says something, it has to be true. It's very similar to the notion "If the priest says it, it has to be true". In this particular presentation, it was paired with belief in creationism (which only about 4% of the students accepted), because the presenter didn't really like the idea of scientism.
I agree with her. Scientism is a bad thing. It has two main problems:
1. It dilutes the idea of "There is nothing like absolute truth in science"
2. It makes it easy for unscientific people to attack science, if something was proven wrong
So where does scientism come from? People want absolute truths. And if they don't use religion anymore (because it has bad reputation), they turn to the "next big thing"... Science.
Whats your opinion on that?
---
Oh, and one other thing to add: Religious beliefs are not contraindicatory to being a scientist. Only if you use your beliefs in science it gets wonky. ;) I am an active member in the greek orthodox church and I have a (still fresh) PhD in physics education, so for me it certainly works.

I find this funny. When I translated the UC rules along with a few houserules for my Kingmaker players, I used the german term for brothel, "Bordell". Nobody even paused on that, they even built one now. And no, no all male-group. They were all like "Ohhh, a trapper or hunter needs a tavern and a brothel after being away from civilization for so long", which almost certainly the way it was and is (you see a lot of red-light stuff on trucker routes).
But then, it's the whole european-american difference again: Over here, nudity or sexuality is (especially for older folks) a lot more OK than violence and death.
And even with kids: Brothels are thing that exists? I mean, even without the internet, if I take the train from Cologne to my former apartment, I would ride along one of the biggest brothels in Germany. And no, it doesn't hide itself. It even advertises, especially to trade fair (or soccer world cup) visitors. And the kids see that, so a brothel is not that mysterious. :D
I would just say, this belongs to all the stuff you need a group contract for. If you or your group are uncomfortable with brothels: Use Dance Halls. This is OK and nothing to be worried about. For example, I'm not super keen about explicit sexual descriptions, so use "fade to black" a lot.

Oh, I will have every crafting feat soon. Mythic game.
But yeah, thats a good consideration. I'm just wired to think that using consumables is bad. I always finished CRPGs with TONS of potions and scrolls.
I think I will go with the staff because I like the feeling and don't want to start sky-high with the character (creating a new one on level 7). But I have also planned to buy scrolls in bulk and later make them in bulk.

I have to say, the situation looks a little bit railroady. If I would be *forced* to do something I don't want to, I would be peeved. She was *forced* to go into the tunnels.
I don't like the "The DM hints"-game. It is a pet peeve of mine and I even go to deliberate lengths to avoid this. Give me an IC clue, but OOC clues I will ignore. For me, the fun is to play the game, nut just being told where to go and then roll some dice to kill bad guys.
That has, by the way, nothing to do with V:tM LARP. I've done that since '99 (not the past three years) and you can have groups with very differing play-styles. In one group, it would be more railroady, seemingly like your gaming group, in another group it would be much more open-ended. Guess, which one I preferred. ;)
What I suspect it is a difference in play-style between her and you. Your group seems very democratic and cooperative and you have no mechanisms (IC or OOC) to deal with internal strife. She seems to like internal discussions, even having a very stron opinion about things. That is more of an OOC issue, you should just talk about that. Be like "We don't really want this part of RP games, could you keep that out too?". Because be assured, for some of us, thats an important part.
If all of this is IC, you should not force her character into the tunnels and then not give her any loot. And in the mentioned fight, you should not have killed her enemies. She doesn't want to play with you, thats fine. We have more important enemies over here.

@N. Jolly
Really? You asked about what potentially transphobic people would do with your enlightenment idea. And I said, answering that, that as a non-transphobic person I don't care for this enlightenment idea. And you concentrate only on this first statement about how I described me?
I find the idea of a trans person interesting, but what I don't care for is forced enlightenment during a fun game. And thats something you should keep in your mind: Do your players want just a nice game of dungeondelving or a deep roleplaying experience? If it is the latter, have fun with your idea. If it is the former, I wouldn't recommend it.
But your role as a GM certainly is not that of a teacher in social tolerance. Keep that in mind, please.

Jodokai wrote: Ok, I quit. You're all right. Stopping a melee attacks with a 10' reach is MUCH harder than stoping a ranged attacker. I don't know what I was thinking. My bad fellas. I thought simple logic would win out, I see now I was mistaken.
You didn't use logic, you just iterated the same thing over and over again. Without proof. Even your precious build was doing just half of the damage you tried to insinuate. And this build was horribly optimized.
So yeah, you proofed that an optimized martial can kill many baddies in a turn. Bravo.

Jodokai wrote: I'm not sure where you're getting "all his pistols" He's using ONE gun. Yeah, read that again and take your time. I'm not using some tail exploit or pre-nerf weapon cords. It's ONE gun. Double that if I used the tail. Hell if I really wanted to get creative and use random buffs like the barbarian is, he uses UMD and casts Unseen Servant and reloads that way. Who is this "HE" you talk about?
Is it this one:
Jodokai wrote:
So let's compare that to the Gunslinger 12th level
Str 9,
Dex 23,
Con 12,
Int 7,
Wis 16,
Cha 7
Feats
Deadly Aim,
Point-blank Shot,
Precise Shot,
Rapid Reload,
Rapid Shot,
Reckless Aim,
Signature Deed
Gear
+1 reliable, greater pistol, alchemical cartridge (paper)
33k on a gun and it destroys your barbarian.
4 attacks 5% miss chance (+16/+16/+11/+6) on all of them and they each do 1d8+17 +3d6, with a zero chance of misfire.
So... You are talking about a 12th level character. Thats news to me.
But lets talk about your "easy" build.
1. Attributes
Min-Maxing Cheese. Suuuure, no optimizing here... Really, that are some interesting stats...
2. Attack Bonus
Seems legit. But only if you really take Reckless Aim which would lead most barbarians to hit you, not only the fire giant.
3. Damage
You took Signature Deed for Up Close and Deadly? Allright.
So, you can deliver, against AC 9, exactly 138 damage. In a Full Attack.
With this famous +6 Belt, it would be 152,95 Damage.
So, lets see, without "Distance" on your weapon:
- How often can you stand exactly 20 foot away from the fictional giant?
- Everything above a distance of 25 ft. means you have to move: No full attack, damage drops to 35 damage. And the enemy will charge you
With Distance, you will still be in charging distance... But lets talk about Distance and the +6 Belt.
You have 16,000 GP left over.
+1 Ring, +1 Amulet, +2 Mithril Chain Shirt, +2 Cloak of Resistance, you have 3,000 GP left over. At this point, Muleback Cords are highly advisable... So you have 2,000 GP left over. Suddenly the prices of your ammunition is important... Lets look at your other stats:
AC: 27
F/R/W: 11/19/9
HP: 22 + 11D8, so around 72.
Sorry. Not viable.
So, to conclude: Setting up a Min-Maxed strawman is no way to convince me.

Jeremias wrote: That said: I still don't get how this fictional pistolero could reload all his pistols. cnetarians routine wouldn't work with me (a pistol really doesn't count as a "small object"!). It should. Pistols are pretty small (4 pounds) and if you get THAT limiting on the tail's usage it becomes a completely useless ability. I don't wanna do that, prehensile tails are fun plot devices. Switching your tail back and forth to hold each pistol as you reload is a bit ridiculous, but so is reloading as a free action in the first place, so you have to roll with it.
I have tried this just now by grabbing a 2kg object from the ground. Nope, neither small than easy. And a pistol is no light weapon, it is a one-handed weapon.
So, how does all of this compute without the reloading shenannigans?

Jodokai wrote: I'm pretty much done here, you guys don't want to see it cool. It works in your games, great, but you're the minority. Look around at all the threads complaining about Archers. Gunslingers do everything archers can but use touch AC's, so they never miss, and do DEX to damage. Lets be honest: I call BS. I play a frigging gunslinger and I cannot outdamage the barbarian. As said two posts earlier: I get to only 70 DPR, even against an AC of 15! And I do not pull my punches there...
Against AC 10, assuming RS and DA:
Attack: +14/+14/+9/+4 (BAB +11, Dex +6, Rifle +1, Weapon Focus +1, Rapid Shot -2, Deadly Aim -3)
Damage: 1D10 + 14 (6 from DA, 6 from Dex, 1 from Rifle +1, 1 from Weapon Training)
So, average damage on every hit ist 19.5. Against a AC of 10 (highly unlikely) I hit every shot but the last with a 95% success rate and this one with a 75% success rate. The DPR formula puts me at 21 pts per damage for the first three attacks (because of the high crit modifier) and 17 pts for the third attack.
Added, this is around 80 damage.
At Level 10, our barbarian did something like 2D6 + 22, average is 29 pts of damage. With an attack bonus of +20. And with pounce, he often has a full attack. If he is not put down by a crit, he does around 60-70 damage per round. With two attacks.
So, from my game experience: The theoretical damage of my level 11 gunslinger is lower than the actual damage of a level 10 barbarian, even considering a very low touch AC.
And add to that the high probability of getting shafted with a Save or Suck. The lowest save of my barbaric friend is higher than my highest save (Ref 17 vs Ref 16).
But hey. Gunslingers are so OP. I'm sure that I am just a bad player with no amount of system mastery. Sure.

I love the fact that you can use the sleeves to just change your whole clothing. I'm not interested in the disguise or these things, but just the glittering illusion of a new suit as I want it is really neat.

Morning,
I just read the FAQ. And to me it seems that with the new wording for Dragon Ferocity the attack-to-damage ratio from Power Attack changes to the progression for twohanded weapons. Am I right?

Interesting question. I would agree with your GM. The increase should be considered before applying the farm benefit. Why? I have no rational explanation, it just feels right.
From an In-Game-POV, I would also agree with your GM: A shortage means, that your previous "Just enough food for everbody"-policy was wrong in this month. Maybe more farms?

wraithstrike wrote: Undone wrote: Rakshaka wrote: Its the 140 hp.. a 14th level party will chew through that in a round. I've noticed its typically really hard to Under-CR at higher levels. Other than some of the Tane (Jabberwock, Bandersnatch), there aren't a lot of monsters that are a death sentence to fight if the party is 3 levels under the CR.
Edit: Winterwight might be another hard fight, if its DCs were just a little higher. Sweet Jesus the Magic Bane Bandersnatch is broken beyond words. That thing could wipe a full group of 20s with ease. I doubt it. It takes more than an anti-magic field. Maybe it can survive in an enclosed area where the party is trapped, but if it is outside it will die.
I think that anti-magic field should only add a +1 to the CR. The main problem of the Magic Bane Bandersnatch is its lack of flying speed. I used of these as an paid assassin for my group (high optimized, APL 17) and they climbed atop a tower (open field, very small village) instead of flying away. So it could get into melee range and tore apart its enemies. A few rounds more and the Zen Archer would have brought it down, even with AMF. So, if used in a typical dungeon setting where you cannot just fly as high as you want, this thing will hit even optimized parties as a once-a-day encounter very hard.

By RAW, Smite Evil overcomes any DR. As I understand it, RAI should be the same. If anyone would disallow that, it would only be fair to inform a paladin player before.
And yes, I had too easy encounters because of that. I still allowed it (I was the GM).

1. Meh. So-to-So.
2. OK.
3. Em... Not so cool.
4. First clear problem.
5. Second clear problem.
6. Cool combats! Fully OK.
7. Yeah, your DM is right... Now everything gets clearer.
OK, you are certainly in parts correct, there is a problem. You and your DM should talk about it. The problem: Your DM ist constantly ambushed by clever tactics from you. I had this problem once and it got a little heated, but we talked about it and it was cool afterwards.
But: You are not always right! You brought up 7 points and IMO in 3 occasions your DM was right, in 2 it was a little unclear (missing circumstances) and 2 were clearly not OK. Especially the poison example smelled a little fishy from your side.
So: Discuss it like normal adults but be prepared to accept criticism and seek a compromise.

We did a certain room in the RotRL-Path last time and got *really* nailed. Incorporeal Undead and I was without magic weapon (gunslinger). Having low strength I was downed in one round (+surprise round), no chance. Ingame I didn't even know they are immune to my attacks. My mates didn't want to run for fear of leaving me down there... So the sorcerer got killed also.
Sometimes you get surprised and cannot run, even if you want to.

Quote: 2) Nothing should be able to remove or suppress player agency except Magic (or something Magic-equivalent) I didn't take this in account. Yeah, that seems to be the reason for all the hate. In my larping games there are many players which take various skills to protect them from domination becuase they don't want to be commanded by another player. Mostly because they feel it would bite them in the a**.
*Free Will*
The word is "must" in the feat description. Just a quick question from a germanguy who almost failed in his english classes (and taking italian and latin as an alternative): "Must" clashes with "free will", does it not? You have literally no free will, if you are forced to do something...
As an person who had the experience of insult-induced rage in schools, I can assure you that the raging person is not very clear on the sorroundings any more. Even loved ones or family can be the (very momentary) target of such a rage. Thats why such things are so tragic if they happen in real life.

I will need that. But the two girls in our group are not so good with english. So, I translated it in german... If anyone is interested, here it is:
Prophezeiung von Armag, dem Zweigeborenen
Ein Sohn der Mammuts, Tigersclan
kam in gestohlene Länder!
Mit mächt'gem Schwert und roter Wut
im Krieg sie zu erstürmen!
Gewalt'ger Stolz und heisses Blut
versuchte ihn mit Gorums Stütz
und verkünden tat er, voller Stolz
dass Armag niemals sterben würd.
In Gozrehs und Phantasmas Augen,
war dies nur blosse Prahlerei,
Sie riefen laut: "Wie kann ers wagen,
"dass er sich brüstet, nie zu sterben!"
Die Blasse fasste ihren Plan,
ihn zu rauben für den Knochenhof.
Als es nach ihr und Gozreh ging,
das war des Armags Todestag.
Von Götter Wut gesandt ein roter Drache
riss mit den Klauen Armags Herz,
doch Gorum hatte doch gewonnen,
die Seele Armags blieb auf dieser Welt.
Ovinrbann, so hieß das Schwert,
geschmiedet von dem Eisenherrn,
um einzusperren des Kriegers Seel,
bis Dunkelheit umgibt die Stern.
Doch kommt er wieder, erneut geboren,
wird nehmen Mann und brennen Korn!
"Zweigeborener Armag", wird er rufen,
"ich zeig den Göttern ewig Leben!"
Gyronnas Erwählte, ohne Namen!
Schwarze Schwestern mit Hasses Flamme!
Zerbrechen die Erde und verwunden den Himmel:
Zweigeborener Armag, du sollst nie sterben!

As soon as I would suspect your hatred, I would play along. I would inform you of my suspicion and then crank out gnomes with the friendly PCGen. At some time in the future, you would either ban me or gnomes from the table...
And yes, you are a bad GM. In fact, I've never met, in 13 years of RPG Games, a worse GM. Even in my teenage years, the GMs were nicer.

Abraham spalding wrote: I didn't leave my crafting to deal with courtiers either -- he wants his kingdom saved he can keep his people's mouths shut... or he can go battle the dragon by his onsie -- I don't mind.
At the end of the day I didn't come looking for a kingdom to save, they asked for me -- again if they want someone to save them then they should respect their betters instead of their ego.
All and all it still just looks like a GM not liking the fact his GMPC got the snubbing it deserved.
Reach spell -- metamagic look into it.
Tell him what if he's inbred cousin is that upset he can come and I'll teach him a cantrip or two to make it up to him -- that way he can pretend to be all impressive at court and perhaps have a chance with the ladies.
However at what point wasn't I of equal ranking to have been in the place in the first place? The Courtier (still just a cling on the royal butt) didn't know better than to insult me? Apparently I'm saving his kingdom and also have an obviously short temper -- perhaps he should have used those social skills to... I don't know not insult the guy his uncle is hoping will save all their butts?
Great work there Lou good to see that aristocratic education didn't go to waste!
So a Hero can answer verbal insults with assault? Nice going there. Not really good and really not lawful. Be sure, you're indispensable, because otherwise, you can go home.
As a DM, I would point out, that if your character wants to leave the court, he can do that. But then he is out of the scope of the campaign and so not longer interesting for me. Roll a new one! Exceptions could be made if the group as a whole wants to go away. Then I would decide if the plot is solved or not... If not: Bad things happen and some people will know that you had the ability to stop them.
