Mummer’s Mask
Aura strong universal; CL 13th
Slot head; Price 40,000 gp; Weight
Description
This item appears as a simple white porcelain mask of the type worn by actors depicting a featureless, sexless face with holes for eyes, nostrils, and mouth, fastened with a plain leather cord.
Three times per day the wearer may use her own magical energy to duplicate a spell they just witnessed cast by another. Any time the wearer successfully identifies a spell of 5th level or lower being cast per the rules for Spellcraft, she may, on her next turn, sacrifice a prepared spell or unused spell slot of at least one level higher as a free action in order to cast the witnessed spell herself. The spell is treated as if it was on her class spell list, including changing to arcane or divine if appropriate, but otherwise follows all spellcasting rules for her class. No metamagic may be applied, even if the spell originally identified was modified in such a manner. If she does not use this power on her very next turn after identifying the spell, the opportunity is lost although no spell or daily use is expended in this case.
Rumors abound of a version of this mask made of gold that allows for the mimicking of even more powerful spells, but if they exist their possessors guard the secret closely.
Construction
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, limited wish; Cost 20,000 gp

I love this idea. It's a strong concept with obvious ties to villains of all sorts. I can't count the number of masked and cloaked foes that appear in all sorts of settings. It's a great idea. Here's what I'd do to make it better.

1) Keep it for 5th level spell, but hint at more powerful versions.
2) Don't require it to use a higher level spell slot to duplicate spells. Keep things simple and clean. [Remember, it uses a head slot. That means sacrificing a body slot normally dedicated to improving your base stats - for casters, this means a +2, +4 to Int, Wis, or Cha is lost. Make it worth losing].
3) It's a style call, but parts of your writing strikes me as passive. You can't really get around that in the opening, but you can later on. Here's what I'd change:

"This featureless mask, frequently worn by actors of all sorts, is made from white porcelain. It has holes for the eyes, nostrils, and mouth, but is otherwise simple in design. When held to the face and the command word is spoken, it gently adheres to the wearer until they choose to remove it.

This mask allows the wearer to use her own magical energy to duplicate a spell they just witnessed being cast. To do so, the wearer must successfully identify the spell cast and, if 5th level or lower, cast it on her next turn by sacrificing a prepared spell or unused spell slot of at least the same level (as a free action) in order to cast the witnessed spell herself. The spell is treated as if it was on her class spell list, including changing it to arcane or divine if appropriate, but otherwise follows all spellcasting rules for her class. The wearer cannot apply metamagic feats, even if the spell originally identified was modified in such a manner. If she does not use this power on her very next turn after identifying the spell, the opportunity is lost (although no spell or daily use is expended in this case). The mask may be used 3 times a day.

Rumors abound of a version of this mask made of gold that allows for the mimicking of even more powerful spells.

Back from holiday (actually was on Saturday but have been crazy busy with work)

First, I wanted to apologize if I held anything up.

Second, I think it's probably best if Heinrich drops out of the party in the game.

My tabletop group wrapped up a campaign in October, and our DM has chosen to run Carrion Crown next. Our group's all excited, and I'd never want to let a PbP dictate what we do IRL...

I've picked a cheerier, more selfless character this time around - a dry/intellectual/creepy alchemist lured me as my first concept when I app'd back in June, but I've actually a hard time "getting into" Heinrich.

Anyway, I hate to play in a PbP that my heart isn't into... and it's tough to play in a PbP when your tabletop group is in the same campaign (particularly since the tabletop group jumped ahead of where I think we are at in the PbP, and it's just going to get worse for me to not metagame the 2 campaigns).

I truly appreciate the opportunity to play with you all. I know this game had a rocky start with Jorm disappearing. I didn't want to simply disappear on you all as often happens on here - and I may lurk from time-to-time, work permitting, if you guys don't object.

Good luck guys, and hopefully Heinrich can at least be of some use as an NPC, as he wasn't too involved in any particular part of the plot yet.

That sucks, but I completely understand. I'm sorry this isn't moving faster, but PbP's are notoriously slow and this one isn't much better. If you don't mind, I'd like to keep Heinrich on for a bit as an NPC, or if you'd like to take him along, at least have him depart with flair!! Maybe in an act of selfless glory? Maybe going toe to toe with Tharnik?

Nah, I'm just kidding. Have fun and best of luck!!

Hey Team Cosmo and Friends!

I was just placing an order, reviewed my recent orders, and noticed I was charged twice at Gen Con for a book I bought at the booth.

I only bought one copy of this book, but apparently it went into the system twice. Can we fix this?

Thanks in advance,

I ran this yesterday and...:

To say the least, I had to wing quite a bit of it. First, as soon as the PCs discovered they were to ensure Seph's safe arrival at the Mordant Spire, they wanted someone close to the door and someone on deck at all times, alongside some of the regular crew. I assumed the named crew were major players, but that other, minor members were required to run the ship (a good portion of my group is prior Navy ... try telling them there's only a handful of men on 3-deck sailing vessel and keep it believable). So, as soon as they heard the elves coming aboard, they sounded the alarm (show me a ship without a bell) and one of the PCs immediately moved to Seph's cabin (which, after 50 days aboard the ship, they'd know the location of).

As a side note: This adventure would have been stronger if it had set out from Riddleport and the PCs were just meeting the crew and Seph. Were it a ten day journey, there would be a logical reason to not have a better feel for the ship's layout and its crew. But after 50+ days? It doesn't follow.

I assumed the murder (Killick on my table) would take advantage of the situation and move to kill Seph anyone. The PC hid, the NPCs failed their perceptions, and the PC witnessed the captain and the first mate kill Seph. Of course, witnessing that, much of the questioning went right out the window, especially when the real captain showed up several rounds later (on deck) to see what the hell was going on!

Once the PCs compared notes, they knew immediately it was the first mate and an accomplice. They only had to investigate who the second man was. It took them longer than the time slot allotted to figure it out, and more than a few times they wanted to drag the first mate atop the deck and just toss him overboard. It was a fun adventure, but it definitely requires a firm grasp of the NPCs, plot, and a heavy dose of common sense.

I ran this with a mixed group of first level characters, two players who were very green. Only one person on the table was a 3.5/PF veteran. It took us roughly 5 1/2 hours to get through (with breaks for jokes, pizza, and the like).

All in all, I really liked this, but GMs definitely need to have a strong feel for a muder-mystery sandbox. Knowing a bit about basic naval positions (terms, ect) will definitely strengthen the believability of this scenario. (Especially if you've anyone familiar with it on your table). I'd also suggest modifying some of the clues with added descriptions, especially with players that start taking inventory about who wears and uses what sorts of items, their conditions, ect. Also, review the spell disguise self (which doesn't change audible components and offers a save when interacted with).

Because the PCs forced the final encounter with the first mate and his accomplice, I just skipped the final encounter, which at that point, seemed pointless (and didn't increase the plot in a tangible way).

All in all, this was a very fun adventure, even if it does require some additional patchwork to account for creative or attentive players...

Anyone interested in reading about the nature of "Role-Playing" and its connection to war games and table-top role-playing games should give The Fantasy Role-Playing Game by Daniel MacKay (McFarland & Company, Inc; ISBN: 0-7864-0815-4) a read. It's a scholarly work that covers the rise of table-top RPGs, how role-playing affects individuals (and their societies), and its overall structure (cultural, formal, social, and aesthetic). There's even some talk about MetaNarratives, The Forgotten Realms, and some of Jonathan Tweet's early work on Everyway (which, in 2011, is a little dated, but relevant nonetheless).

The ideas behind mechanics vs. play are covered throughout the book, with an eye toward the sphere of drama being the model for play, but maintaining that mechanics are a necessity to facilitate the factor of choice in a setting devoid of a fixed script (what we would normally call "railroading").

It's a dry read, honestly, but worth its weight in gold for those out there interested in the nature of the game beyond the mechanics of a particular system - discussing everything from why we play, how we play, and how playing rewards us as individuals.

I think a clear look at the situation is really where a great "Intimidate" roll would come into play (in regards to intelligent undead). If you've got one hand on a stake, you've managed to chain down your favorite Lestat, and he's only inches from the divine retribution of the holy, holy sun.. and you say, "Tell me what I want to know or else..." I'd say, sure, an Initimidate roll is definitely warranted. He might be immune to the magic of lesser mortals, but he sure isn't immune to that sun or common sense. Self-preservation should kick in. And if it doesn't, your local Inquisitor is probably going to just find what he was looking for when he's done sifting through Lestat's ashes...

On the other hand, if your fighter walks in, the Lich surrounded by a dozen of his loyal minions, and says, "Yeah, you'd better surrender before you damage my calm and I have to toss you all over this place by your boney little head," the Lich is probably going to chuckle a little right before he unleashes a world of hurt.

In general, I think you shouldn't let mechanics get in the way of common sense or a great story, and as a GM, should certainly bend the rules to keep the story exciting and your players engaged. Of course, that works both ways, and you should always try to keep a level head and a can of common sense close by.

That's my $.02 at least... Your milage may vary.

Looking for something "Northern?"

Looking for something "Steampunk?"

Looking for something that focuses on Ragnarök, gunslinging dwarves, ancient runes, strange realms, and need to piece it all together before the Great Tree falls apart?

Take a look at Rhune: Dawn of Twilight. Rhune is a Free (let me repeat that, free) Pathfinder compatible Stormpunk setting I released at GenCon last year that continues to grow and evolve (much to my delight)! It's illustrated by amazing, industry recognized artists, too!

Additionally, I've recently begun to release a small newsletter to support Rhune: Dawn of Twilight called, Twilight's Dawn that offers additional pieces of lore about the setting, shares some of its amazing art, and even follows the slightly askew adventures of my local gaming group here in Kuwait! And, once again, it's free!!

Issue #1 of Twilight's Dawn is available here. It features art from Hugo "Butterfrog" Solice, Jon Roberts, and Darren Calvert. Oh, and a bunch of nonsense by yours truly.

Issue #2 of Twilight's Dawn is available here. It features a very cool cover by Terry Maranda! Additional art by Darren Calvert. Oh, and some crazy stuff about Rhune by yours truly.

All,

If you'd like me to pick this up, I'd be happy to. Here's my take on things:

1) I'll pick it up. I'm not open to a "restart" and I'd love to see where this goes as it's playing out currently. I think the dynamics developing between some of the characters is far too rich to just toss aside.

2) I'd be open to minor character changes and reviews, but much like Jorm, I'd like to keep the current theme and feel strongly in the "horror court." I know Madeline had her heart set on a firearm and I'm perfectly okay with that, provided none of the other players take real issue with it. If it does become a problem, however, I will find a creative way to remove the mechanic (that fits the story). Having watched Madeline's style, however, I don't foresee this being an issue.

A note about guns: If you want to use a firearm, you'll be using the normal AC just like anyone else shooting a missile weapon. I know Paizo has elected to use touch AC as their primary mechanic, but I don't see that really being any more realistic (I know, I know, it's fantasy ..but it's also science and guns) than a high powered crossbow or composite short bow (at short range). If you want a gun, you'll have to accept relatively normal ranged attack rolls. In exchange, I'll be ignoring the misfire chance (range dependent) on guns, with natural ones jamming guns (instead of them gaining the broken condition). Trying to fire a jammed gun or critically failing on clearing the gun, however, is a completely different story...

3) Yes, we definitely need to pick up additional players. In fact, I'd be open to two additional spots. I'll go through the old posts and see who applied and might still want to get involved.

4) If you have questions, feel free to post me here. I won't be exchanging emails for the PbP unless I feel it's absolutely necessary. I try to check the boards at least twice a day (once on Thursdays and Fridays).

5) I'll be off on holiday from May 2nd-9th (going to Dublin and Belfast with friends), so there will not be any posts during those dates. You are forewarned.

6) I'm not going to kill off Tharnik just this moment, but I'll definitely work his exit into the plan. I don't like playing DMPCs (too much of a pain), but I'm also a stickler for continuity. He's not going to keel over and die. He might wait out a month, take his platinum, and just go.

7) If not one minds, I'll just keep these two threads active and create a GM Profile to pick up the story. I don't see the point in starting everything all over again.

You thoughts?

Don't mind me getting all wordy, but here it goes. As far as Golarion goes, it's definitely a kitchen-sink setting with plenty of room for different themes (even Steampunk/Stormpunk), provided they are hinged to the overall feel the GM has clearly stated he wants to unleash in this AP. If we find ourselves with pink-robo-bunnies speaking l33t and forcing the atmosphere away from the darker, Slavic feel, then yes, it should go. We're definitely playing within a very specific arc and the GM made that clear. (and, ultimately, he has the final say).

However, if the persona of Mr. Smith can add to the creep-factor, I'm all for it. Especially if he starts to develop a personality of his own (think Anne Rice's The Witching Hour). Not only do we tap into the whole, " spirit manifesting as a creepy automaton" genre, we do so in a way that deepens Madeline's character, as well.

As for the guns, they can work, too. I remember watching the TV series Friday the 13th as a child and wondering about that entire shop, with its weird items, cursed family heirlooms, and the like. There's certainly no reason Madeline can't tap into this, as well.

That being said, it's a tight rope (pun intended) to walk. You're already playing with two specific genres inside of the overall "horror scene" and it'll be a real task to pull of. If you're successful, it'll also be a real treat. If not, however, it'll definitely detract from the overall movement in the setting.

Of course, this is all a moot point if the GM hand-waves (either off or on) the entire concept.

If I had a say, I'd keep the Mr. Smith and just forget about the Gunslinger persona (and the headaches that come with that).

That's my $.02.

Sincerely,
Jaye

Well, whether the new factions are tied to the current ones or not, I'm pretty happy that we'll have more options (even if it means printing even more missions for my local game...

When should we expect an "IC" thread?

Okay, I'm updating my speculation. If Mr. Moreland is truly hinting at the new factions being tied to existing ones (he hasn't said how, unless I missed something - which is always a possibility), then I think it's more likely something like this:

1) A faction representing "Shadow Lodge" operatives.. (possibly tied Qadira?)

2) The Eagle Knights (tied to Andoran)

3) The Risen Guard (tied to Osirian)

4) The Kitharodian Academy or the Lion Blades-it's hard to call (tied to Taldor)

5) The Hell Knights (tied to, obviously, Cheliax).

Of course, I still think it would be cool to see something from Alkastar, Hermea or Nex. But hey, that's just me....

From my perspective as a player in this game it feels that the world serpent has already decided that it won't be a factor if the orc doesn't go around wearing baby skin hat.

Ummm.... I guess I should change my starting gear then.

I'm speculating, but I'm thinking...

1) A faction representing "Shadow Lodge" operatives..

2) A faction representing Hermea..

3) A faction representing the Shackles Pirates..

4) A faction representing Geb..

5) A faction representing Varisia...

By all means, please do. By the way, I'm GMT +3 (in Kuwait). You're in Australia? GMT +9, +10, +11?

I can hear it now, "But James Jacobs said..."

Whatever happened (I know, I'm an idealist) to playing games for fun and NOT going about breaking everything in sight. I mean, it's a ROLE-playing game, not a RULE-playing game.

Sean K. Reynolds used to do a bit (on LiveJournal) about "shaving off the serial numbers" in which he would take a monster from the Bestiary, describe in differently, and use it as an NPC of the appropriate level. You could, for instance, use:

A Derro (CR3) for a small rogue/wizard that focuses on using darkness...
A Gargoyle (CR4) for a medium fighter in heavy armor that's been blessed with weird abilities...
A Sea Hag (CR 4) for a human Witch that's out of spells..
A Rakasha (CR 10) for a human Sorcerer...

And so on.
It's a great idea (I'm sure he was more stuff like this on his website, but I'm not sure).

With Torthen going Druid, do I need to stay "cure" or should I switch to "inflict"? What's the overall consensus?

As a side note: It would be really cool if I started inflict (evil) and, as I shifted alignment, went cure. I know that the class requires a choice and once chosen, you have to stick, but I was thinking more about the theme. I think it would be cool.

Also, I'm glad to hear I'll get to actually play out the alignment side of things without worrying too much about a knife fight as soon as our Pally gets a whiff of me.

;)

Man, this is going to be FUN!!

Key thing to remember is that we are mostly LG.

Is the whole group LG? Man, talk about some role-play between the Pally and I! I'd be curious as to how "alignment" is dealt with, too. Do we assume because someone is NE we can just off them or will the GM require "evil acts."

I'm curious because playing the redemption angle (which I'd love to do) could be cut pretty short by an over zealous paladin with detect evil.

Of course, it would be interesting to be present at the professor's funeral when we all met..

I can't speak for the other Oracle (obviously), but I'm definitely focused on combat/combat support with heals as a backup only when absolutely necessary. In fact, my spells (burning disarm and magic stone) should make that fairly evident. CLW is only there because I have to choose cure or inflict. If need be, I can certainly switch over to inflict and focus 100% on combat.

(Ironically, in terms of builds, both Battle and Stone are combat orientated, with Battle having more "healing" options. Heh. Go figure).

EDIT I've also played around with the idea of a duel class as an oracle/fighter, too. If I did, I'd probably take Improved Initiative and Toughness to make Tharkik more "frontline."

Here's my application:

Thanrik, Half-Orc Oracle

Tharnik

I applied to another of the CC PbP's, but was missed in the overwhelming wave of submissions. Hopefully I can tell Tharniks conflicted but dynamic story here, instead.

Thanks in advance for considering me.
