Nope...Thats what the 5-grand is for...The right to see it early.

What does this mean for Paizo? Do we know yet?

No we dont. I dont think they have the rules yet..And even if they did they need to read them and digest it all before a decision is to be made.

Paying five-grand just to get the rules 5 months early shows that Paizo is very serious about getting 4th edition product out ASAP.
This...Saddens me

Im personally very worried about a conversion. I really am still praying for a 3.5th edition campaign setting harcover book and a 3rd adventure path before it all falls apart.

Nah...Half-Orcs and Gnomes are cool. Im going with exploitation. :)

Wasnt it said that things that appear on the DDI wont be in books? If the DDI material appeared in a book later down the road why pay for the DDI?

It seems to me that Half-Orcs truly got shafted. They may be available on the DDI but may not even be in next year's PHB2 now.

Dragonborn in the first PHB and Half-Orcs as pay-per-view internet bonus content. It just seems so bass-ackwards to me.

WotC upsets me yet again. Surprise surprise.

I still wont convert. but for me Its more because of the tons of 3rd edition books I want to keep using. Not wanting my giant investment becomming obsolete outweighs me loathing the new system.

There is stuff I hate about 4th...Dragonborn and Teiflings replacing Half-Orcs and Gnomes being very high on the list.

Since I wont really do it I'll still say that if I hypotetically converted I would definitly be all over a 3rd party Monster Manual and Players Handbook that converts the castoffs and puts them back into D&D.

My only problem would be the pricetag. In a year a lot of the monsters, PC races and classes left out of 4th edition will arrive in official WotC form...making the Necromancer Games books outdated in a short amount of time. I wouldnt spend much on a book I would see as a temporary fix.

I know in the RPG community this is a crazy thing to say and is darn near heracy...But I dont know squat about Cthulu.

Heres what I know:

- Big demon with wings and octopus head.
- "Old One" or "Old God" (whatever that means)
- H.P. Lovecraft books
- A Call of Cthulu RPG exists
- He was in an episode to The Real Ghostbusters cartoon

Thats pretty much it.

Ive played D&D and Stars Wars RPG and never branched out more than that.

Was Cthulu invented by H.P.Lovecraft or is he real mythology that Lovecraft wrote stories about?

I have this in the book section of the messageboard because I'd love a list of books I should read to know him and his mythos. Lovecraft wrote alot of stuff...but does it all tie to Cthulu or just some of it?
Because I'm very anal retentive Id prefer to read things in order. Im not one to skip ahead to the 3rd or 4th book about him because its a good one.

Thanks :)

The Cthulu mini is pre-painted plastic.

He unfortunatly has one of those clicky-bases that Wizkids uses.

He is for the Horrorclix game. He was a convention exclusive if I remember correctly so he is quite expensive.

It looks like the movie went through an obvious script re-write because of plot points that were never addressed again.

I never read the book but it seemed like they were building up to something that never happened.

Spoiler:
Theres a part with he captures a female zombie. The male sticks his head out in the sun and screams in rage burning himself. In Will Smith's report he says they are losing their survival instint and getting dumber. Its obvious to the audiance that the creature was upset that his female was taken from him. Maybe it was even his girlfriend. They are getting smatter not dumber.

Later they get so smart they make a boodie trap very similar to the one Will made. They copied him. They even used the manakin he talks to as bait. The zombie had dogs on leashes that he sicks on him. They are definitly getting smarter.

After laying this groundwork this is never touched upon again in the story.

Spoiler:
If anything the creatures revert back to mindless monsters at the film's end.

Obvoius script rewite that was done poorly.

Yeah if you are any class that casts arcane spells you can cast evil descriptor spells with no penalty. Its what you do with the spell that may effect your alignment.
My good wizard casts evil summoning spells all the time. I look at it as bending an evil creature to my will and making fight for the cause of good.

So with clerics and divine casters they dont even have access to evil spells if they worship good gods. So its hard to even get around that restriction to even make it an issue (scrolls and magic items).

I usually say that casting spells with teh evil descriptor is just a spell descriptor. Its like a spell with the fire descriptor.

The ONLY time it matters is for clerics. I ruled that good aligned gods do not grant evil spell if they are prayed for.

So its not really possible to change alignment from casting evil spells.

I remember "Beast of Burdon" was th eone with all the Gnolls piloting the giant monster. It was in Dungeon #100.

The big problem with that adventure was that the map was incorrect. There was an area on the creature that had like this little greenhouse with a Gnoll Druid or somesuch. It doesnt exist on the map. :(

Other than that it was a good adventure.

I like the new art. It pretty much on par with 3rd edition. Its not a quality dip. Heck its even better because i havent seen Baxa's art being used yet.

But everything else you mentioned I see as horrible changes. The altered magic system? Changing the cosmology. Turning Eladrin and Archons into elves and elementals? You like these things?
Re-envisioned monsters alone is the #1 reason for me to borderline hate 4th edition.

Thats why all the thread where people debate and argue are pointless. If you point out what makes something crap and the counterpoint is that you think its cool...Well...that pretty much ends the debate.

Not really. The steps can be seen has how someone deals with the fact that this happened.

The acceptance stage doesnt mean you submit to 4th ed. It just means you accepted that it exists and all the consequences it will have on 3.5.

I'm just now getting around to reading the Planar Handbook.
Theres a chapter on new PC races. Im sure plenty of players have had Aasimar and Teifling PCs. With Bariaurs appearing in in the Manual of the Planes (and back in 2nd edition Planescape) I'm sure one or two of you have had a Bariaur PC as well.

But has anyone rolled up and used the brand new races introduced in this book? Anyone? Just curious how it worked out and what the back story was and what kind of campaign it was.

Heres the races Im asking about with a short description:

Boumman - They live on the Astral plane. Their homes are built on peices of astral debris or dead gods (just like githyanki). Oddest thing about them is they take a vow of silence so they sing and humm as a language. Their names are even little tunes. Seems like an odd PC to roleplay to say the least.

Mephling - According to the book sometimes Mephits have runts called Mephlings. Mephlings look like halflings with elemental traits. Sort of like small sized genasi. Oddest thing about them is they have no resistance to their element at all. a fire mephlings can get burned just as easily as a human can. Water mephlings cant breath water. Considering mephits are practially made of the element they represent how do fire mephits give birth to this thing? How do they survive if born on their home plane? They are outsiders and are considered extraplanar if not on a plane that will incinerate them.

Neraph - A medium humanoid that looks like a red slaad. They wear armor and weild equipment and such. So its a wattered down PC version of a slaad.

Shadowswyft - From the plane of shadow. Their language uses physical motions as well as words so names are pronounced with words and motions. Examples are "Brot" acomanied by a wink or "Prag" acompanied by pointing with left index finger. That aught to get annoying after a while. They also hate standing around when action can be done. So if roleplayed correctly they would be a hated member of the party when they are always rushing in and opening dorrs while the party is formulating a plan.

Spiker - Spike covered dudes from Acheron who love battle. Nothing to weird there so I'm expecting the most popular of these new races.

Wildren - My favorite origin story. A race bred from dwarven petitioners mating with celestial badgers (hahaha!). They are from the Beastlands and are fur-covered dwarves who live in big badger burrows and can speak with badgers.

Cant a Quasit turn invisible at will?

Cant it just appear and then dissapear in the next round? And if it did that wouldnt the arrow in its gut dissapear then?

Example - Fighter who weilds a Greatsword turns invisible and picks up a Greatsword lying on the floor. His own sword in hand would be invisible because he was weilding it when the invisibilitu was cast. The sword he picked up would be visible however.

So if the arrow is visible and appears to be stuck in the air, if the quasit dispelled its invisibility and quicky dissapeared again the arrow would go with it.

I agree. When I was in high school I lived at home and had no expences at all. Heck my entire paycheck was disposable income.

Now that Im 32, married and own a home...Not so much disposable income.

Not so much at all. :(

Anyone else STILL find 4E to be the same game now? Shall I pull out more quotes from this book? How about ones that WotC contradicted themselves on a dozen times? Give me the word, I'm ready to pick this thing apart and eat it whole.

I have to read through the elf section again, cause a friend of mine found one in that part of the book that had us laughing. When I find the two quotes, I'll place them here. (heck, I should start a thread on the contradictory statements of WotC on the topic of D&D itself).

I have no intention of getting Races and Classes. And the part you just quoted about Fey blew my mind that WotC really said that. So I would very much love a new thread full of excerpts from the book full of these quotes and contradictions you mentioned.

  • For Paizo, it is a sure cost for what looks like very uncertain returns. Organizing a book like the player book is a massive endeavor simply on the graphic and formating side. I am not even talking about rule creation here. One thing is certain, it will cost Paizo a lot of money and management time.
  • I dissagree. As far as graphics, yes there will be new artwork that must be drawn and put in the book. As far as rule creation, 3.75 ir really just the 3.5 SRD being printed up so the 3.5 Players handbook still exists on the market. There will be minor "tweeks" here and there but its all material that is already written. All Paizo really needs to do is put a pretty cover on it and change the art. Thats not a big project at all.

    TabulaRasa wrote:
  • Is Paizo capable of publishing this book and maintaining the quality of the work (scenario, art, derived products) on the pathfinder series?
  • See above. Yes Paizo is more than capable. It should'nt detract from the other projects Paizo is working on since all they need to do is layout, art and minor re-writes.

    TabulaRasa wrote:
  • Ideally you want to publish before 4.0 comes out. The people who will have switched to 4.0 early are unlikely to want to switch back again. Is there enough time to come with a quality product before 4.0 gets published in June?
  • Its not really as ideal as you think to publish this 3.75 book before 4.0 comes out. Before the 4th edition release there will be 3.5 PHB everywhere. Paizo doesnt have to worry about their version of the rulebook until 3.5 PHBs become scarce.

    TabulaRasa wrote:
  • Ok, let's suppose you manage to pull off all the above. Guess what?: your new product happens to compete with the number 1 brand in the sector which is just going through a re-launch. Good luck. Can Paizo really compete with WoTC in pure marketing $ spend?
  • It doesnt really need to compete directly. No RPG company comes close to WotC. All Paizo needs to do is be successful within its own small company. And since it looks like 40% to 50% of D&D players dont like how 4th edition is shaping up it wont be THAT hard to be successful without falling in line with WotC's new version of D&D.

    TabulaRasa wrote:
  • What if 4.0 ends-up not being so bad after all (so far, we haven't seen anything). Well, the consequences would be negative for Paizo because players would have switched to 4.0 while Paizo has single handedly borne the cost of developing 3.75 for nothing
  • If 4.0 does manage to be awesome and everyone wants to ditch 3.5 in order to play 4.0 Paizo should still be fine. They just need to convert when they realize staying 3rd edition isnt working out for them. You get the impression that if Paizo doesnt convert ASAP they will go bankrupt before they have a chance realize their mistake and switch over. I cant believe this is true at all.

    TabulaRasa wrote:
  • Seriously, how many publishing company have gone bust in the past 20 years despite great game mechanics? Are there lessons to be learnt here?
  • This is different. Yes some companies invented great RPGs that arent D&D that still failed. But in this case its not just a new RPG that isnt D&D. In this case it would be Dungeons & Dragons. Paizo cant use that name of course but it WOULD be D&D. To some gamers it would be looked at as the REAL D&D while WotC owns the name and put it on this new game that isnt D&D.

    TabulaRasa wrote:
  • if 4.0 is a dog, then it's a catastrophe for the industry as a whole. Hasbro pulls the plug, we loose our market leader and we can kiss goodbye innovative products (pre-painted miniature, tileset, items cards..... they didn't exist when I started playing). Not sure having a 3.75 vs a 3.5 will make a big difference in this situation
  • If 4.0 is a dog then yes the RPG industry as a whole will take a nasty hit. I will really miss pre-painted plastic miniatures and stuff. But if 4.0 is a dog more people will flock to Paizo's 3rd edition D&D. Heck WitC may even go back to 3rd edition if they see their error of their ways (unlikely). And as for the whole "3.5 vs 3.75". I think you are misunderstanding what 3.75 means since 3.75 effectivly IS 3.5.

    TabulaRasa wrote:
  • Can you even pull such a thing as 3.75 under the OGL? What about other independent publishers, will they follow onto 3.75?
  • Yes the SRD is open content. You can pretty much cut and paste every word of it and sell it legally. And yes, I see other independant publishers staying with 3rd edition if Paizo leads the way and does well for itself.

Isnt anyone seeing the horrible irony here?

WotC decided to pull an April Fools joke on us by scaring everyone and announcing 4th edition is comming in 2011.

I remember this when it was done. Everyone was horrified that 4th was announced and a big commotion went up. Some people figured it out but WotC eventually said "Settle down its OK we were just fooling you."

Now it seems this joke meant to get everyone upset is actually a better scenario than the reality of it all!!!

How about the beholder's lair? I actually just read this adventure a little while ago and thought the strange doors were odd.

It says the only way to open the door is to cast the apropriate spell on it. The doors however dont seem to be described as being different colors or anything to show wich eye ray is needed for which door.

I doubt the magic users in a party are willing to blow all their magic trying to find the right spell/door combination.
I doubt they can even find out thats how the doors are opened in the first place.

For those who played through it...How were the door bypassed? Do all parties just pick locks or bash doors down?

    here were my thoughts.

    1. Denial - What? We were told no 4th edition until at least 2010! WotC cant go back on their word. This is a big practical joke.

    2. Anger - This stinks! I own tons of D&D material I havent read or used yet. And the game isnt broken! This money grab is ruining everything. WotC were my heroes now I loath them for doing this to ME.

    3. Bargaining - Please Paizo. Stay 3.5 and you will be the greatest company in the world. Convert and I will boycot you to.

    4. Depression - Sigh. This rots. The new generation of gamers will not play the same game I used to play. As a matter of fact Im sure the younger geration will turn up their noses to pen and paper games and grognards will turn up their nose to this MMORPG on paper. Its so sad to see the death of my hobby.

    5. Acceptance - Sigh. D&D will be dead in a few years. At least I still have freinds who contine to play 3.5 with me.

    6. Revenge - At least WotC will realize what a horribel mistake they made in about 2 years.

    7. Satisfaction - When that happens I'll be able to say I told ya so. (But I will still be depressed that D&D died so Satisfaction isnt really going to happen).

Since everyone is saying all of them I'll pipe in and say you are not alone. Heck I'm probably worse than you.

For a good while my life got VERY busy so I stopped playing and reading D&D material.
However I kept on buying books and kept my magazines subscriptions going knowing I'd return to the hobby someday.

Well Im back...And I have this insane anal system to catch up. I am reading everything in the order they were published and released. I read the stuff WotC put out that month, followed by the Dragon issue and then the Dungeon. Then I read one 3rd party book. After that its back to WotC the following month.

I just reached July of 2004 yesterday. That means I am just cracked open The Planar Handbook. After I read that its on to Serpent Kingdoms, then the Eberron adventure Shadows of the Last War, then the July 04 Dragon, then the 04 Dungeon (the Maure Castle issue..I've been looking foward to that one), then something by Necromancer games probably, then on to whatever WotC released in August 04.

So you see why I'm sticking with 3rd edition. Theres still so much matierial "comming out" for me. I mean...the Eberron campaign setting just came out about 2 weeks ago as far as I'm concerned, and the Shackled City Adventure path is drawing to a close. :)

Wow Douglas! What a great post.

Prety much my own thoughts and experiances written out for me.

Just to go off topic for a second...That was my big problem will the Eberron Gods. The pantheon known as the Soverign Host is pretty much pairs of gods with almost identicle names. There are seven of them I think but they are paired up into similarly named gods with the seventh having a unique name.

OK back on topic. I use the caracter names. I know my DM as a friend and he invited me to a game he was running. The DM is the only guy I know at the table and vice-versa. After gaming so long we are friendly now but for the longest time I knew their character names better than their real ones.

If you want to play D&D and nott Castles & Crusades or a different RPG then I would suggest "Scurge of the Howling Horde".

Its a very simple beginning adventure that was meant for new players.

Good point. I don't know when it would ever matter.

    Thanks :)

So the ranger can put those 50 charges to use right away. Great!

As far as the bard...Does it matter if its an arcane wand or a divine wand? Im still unsure of that part but that seems really picky. I think we will just house-rule it that if the ranger uses the wand it casts the divine version of CLW and if the bard uses it then it would be the arcane version.

    I apreciate it.

Our current band of PCs has no cleric.

The solution to this dilema was to save our gold and get a Wand of Cure Light Wounds.

So the question is. Can a 2nd Level Ranger and a 2nd Level Bard use it?

Ranger - Cure Light Wounds is on his spell list but he is only 2nd level and incapable of casting spells. Can he still use the wand?

Bard - Cure Light Wounds is on her spell list but she casts arcane magic not divine. Does the type of magic matter with wands?

Thanks for the help in advance. :)

Golarion's GameMastery and Pathfinder books remaining 3rd edition and a brand-new 4th edition campaign setting being created would be super cool and the ideal solution.

Theres either not enough people to do the work or not enough new employees Paizo can hire and trust with the writing quality. Otherise they would just do that.

    - The Dark Knight
    - Hellboy 2: The Golden Army
    - the new James Bond (no title yet)
    - Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
    - the new Star Trek (no title yet)
    - OTHER

In my early years I GMed a Star Wars campaign and created an Im perial Admiral who was the main villian for my story.

This was back when my DM skills were not so hot so I had this railroad of a story the players were to ride on. The Admiral was to pop up a few times to establish himself as the villian and he would be taken out in the end of the story durring a big starfighter battle.

Anyway the first time they meet him they are in cuffs beign taken into a star destryers holdign cell and he was gloating and what not.
Durring their escape they see him and a bunch of stormtroopers down a hall and the point was to have the PCs run like Han did in the original starwars.

Well it didnt work. One players made a called shot to shoot the Admiral and he rolled so perfectly I had to concede. The Admiral went down.
The party went on to take down enough stormtroopers that one guy was able to run up to the admiral on the ground and shoot him full of holes including one to the head.

After they escaped they even told me they did that on purpose because they saw I was setting this guy up to be the lead villan and wanted to ruin my plans.

Well I showed them. He showed up later anyway just like in my script (upon reflection it was a script..not an adventure). He was all cyborged up but he was still kicking.

Im so embarrased. Well it was a learing experiance.

Ok dispite this being a funny thread...If taken seriously it seems to me that 4th Edition is so different from its previous incarnations that its more than just an edition change. Its a brand new game.

4th Edition D&D really isnt a correct name.

"The New Dungeons and Dragons Game" is actually much better.
Even though it doesnt feel like D&D, realistically the name Dungeons and Dragons is the most marketable part of it so calling it D&D must remain. But 4th edition doesnt ring true for me.

Green Ronins "Freeport" campaign setting is all about pirates and cannons are used.

I'd look up the rules and see if it sounds good.

I own a PS3 so I guess I own a BluRay player...But I stick with buying DVDs for now in case HD-DVD wins this war.

Ive seen the quality of both and its really not a big deal of a difference so I dont bother buying the new fancy disks yet.

Thanks for the link. I am officaly well informed now :)

Does anyone have this DVD or seen it? There seem to be so many cuts of this movie I'm losing track.

What makes it different? Is stuff just added or are things changed around like the Donner Cut of Superman II?

Load of Green Ronin stuff recently arrived at my buddies house..except for this modual. So no, orders already placed will just be refunded.

I really dont know. Its hard to say.

When I read the Paizo Boards and talk to everyone I know personally who plays, D&D 4th edition is a bad movie and it will bomb.

However. If you check out other D&D messageboards you will see groups of people very different from here.
Ive seen threads where someone will ask why anyone would buy Elder Evils or 3rd edition books now that 4th edition is comming. Such threads will go on for 3 or 4 pages where everyone agrees and not one person will say they dont plan on converting.

Ive also gone to my FLGS looking for the latest Dungeon Crawl Classics and GameMastery moduals and being told by the store guy that they havent ordered 3rd edition stuff in months because thery are worried it wont sell.

If you hang exclusively on Paizo's boards you may be seeing a skewed version of the future.

If another game company decided to do a 3.75 and Paizo thought it was superior to 4E and wouldn't hurt their sales I could see them doing it, but I don't see Paizo taking up the helm of developing such a system.

Someone correct me if Im wrong. But I always thought the concept of 3.75 is not this whole new system.

3.75, if it were invented, would just be the 3.5 PHB reissued by another publisher that isnt WotC with little to no changes to the SRD.

What little changes would be in there would just be some "tweaks" here and there to fix the parts of the rules that 3rd edition players feel need fixing.
It really wouldnt be that different from 3.5 at all. Its not this new system you are thinking it is.

The whole point of 3.75 (I think) is so 3rd edition PHBs would still be printed and sold somewhere...Not to create a new system.

I dislike creatures with a level adjustment of +3 or more.

If its a +2 I warn my player they will need a ton of experiance just to reach 2nd level and it usually scares them off.

Ive had only two occasions where a player wanted to be a race that had a level adjustment...Once I had a Goliath and once a Teifling.

I also wont allow campaign spacific races unless its in the campaign setting (no Kender unless Dragonlance. No Warforged unless Eberron).

    Never heard of it myself.

To provoke an attack of opportunity you have to perform an action in or pass through a threatened square. Usually you see the enemy if you are that close.

To sneak attack your enemy must be unaware of your presence or flat footed.

Only way I can see an attack of opportunity also being considered a sneak attack is if a rogue is hiding or invisible and an enemy walks right past him.

Is this a legal thing to do or does an AoO not allow sneak attack damage?

EDIT: The post above was not there as I typed this. Not counting the Epic Feat can an AoO also be a sneak attack?

Hate playing Monks, Barbarians and Rangers.

Monks dont get cool weapons and armor..I just prefer the heavey equipment over the kung-fu. Plus I try to make a Europeon vlavor of monk so it fits in th egame world and other players cant wrap their minds arounf monks that arent from oriental regions.

Barbarians have the same problem as Monks. Why not just be a fighter because they are cooler anyway? Raging is a pain in the butt to handle and all the feats fighters get is cooler IMHO.

Rangers have animal companions which is annoying. And fighting with 2 weapons is so complicated that no one I know handles it correctly so its not worth it. I usually DM and when a player wants to use 2 weapons at once I want to slap them from acrooss the table because I know they will not handle it correctly and abuse it. Every session will be me correcting them or checking their sheet to make sure its being handled correctly.

Print Edition is unnavailable. Did it sell out? Will there be more?
