Master of Flame wrote: "Very brave..." the kobold hisses, "to attack a child." "I can never tell you things apart. You're all too short."
Janrith bellows "A kobold! Kill it!"
He fires his crossbow at the closest attacker, taking a 5ft step if necessary to avoid an AoO.
1d20+3 = 8.
"Well that wasn't a very good shot."
Janrith is best coming up last, he is reduced to crossbowman and utility-healer at this point.
Whispering, Janrith responds to Ovirid:
"To the east there appears to be more kobolds. To the north is some sort of deranged pyromaniac that thinks we are in league with orcs." He looks over at Yin and shrugs, "No offense."
Janrith blinks at the dwarf for a moment, as if his partner had suddenly changed into a kobold himself. Shaking his head he whispers "Of course I speak the tongue of dragons."
Stealth (if needed to get closer):1d20+2 = 3.
Perception (listen): 1d20+4 = 24.
Finally, if he can make out the words, he attempts to determine if it is the sounds of spellcasting.
Spellcraft: 1d20+9 = 23.
UMD: 1d20+15 = 27
3 healing
Janrith will crawl through the room once it appears safe, following his group into the nesting room.
Initiative: 1d20+2 = 11
Of course I would tie...I guess that doesn't count as beating it.On a related note, what is your position on carrying loaded crossbows, Tarren? Need to know for the future.
"Perhaps a certain celestial creature could be of use here?"
Moving out of sight of the room (back the way he came) and casting his final 1st-level spell of the day (I believe) Janrith begins to summon a celestial badger next to him. Once it arrives, he moves forward again and orders the badger to enter the room.
A bit hot-headed perhaps, but what the heck.
"If required, I possess flint and steel to make a spark, and I'm sure a strip of my blankets will provide ample combustion to burn off this trap."
Spellcraft to see if this is a spell effect: 1d20+9 = 16.
Reflex = 15.
Janrith mutters a Draconic curse, gently prodding his burns to see how bad they feel.
"Hmm, jewels. Allow me to appraise them. Perhaps I can determine where they were acquired, in addition to their value."
Appraise = 14.
Janrith scrambles to his feet, looking around to check if anyone noticed. Embarassed, he makes an effort to actually climb.
I'm figuring I need three checks to reach the top?
Climb: 17, 11, 16
Janrith waits for Yin and Ovirid to finish their climb before ascending. Confident in his ability, he begins as if it were a promenade.
Climb (Take 10) = 9
Tarren the Dungeon Master wrote: Sir Manfred VonFalkenburg wrote: Sir Manfred eyes the climb and his total -7 to climb check and decides to wait there on the road for the scouts to go up and take a look first.
He hopes (and says a little prayer to Iomedae) that he won't have to climb up there. Good luck with that. Most of the caves are up cliffs so as a group you will probably have to find a solution eventually. "I wonder if those flying...things...would be interested in helping?"
At the first chance, Janrith will summon a celestial badger as close as possible to the enemy.
Casting time 1 round.
Janrith will stalk near the back of the party. If anybody asks for more healing he will provide, but will not offer.
Janrith nibbles delicately at his breakfast, playing with his food constantly. Despite the extra time this takes he still manages to finish his entire plate.
"Best mystery meat I have ever had, good halfling."
"I'd be happy to assist any others who are wounded in my defense. I regret that I know little about this area; are owlbears common in these parts?"
Just in case, Knowledge (arcana) on the owlbears:
1d20+6 = 24.
"Well, if you want to sully yourself with blood, fur, and feathers go right ahead. You do appear to be wounded."
Janrith with use 2 charges on Ovirid and 2 on Burp.
All UMD succeed.
Total Healing:
Ovirid: 7 hit points.
Burp: 9 hit points.
Is anybody else wounded?
"Or we could save ourselves the labour and just set it on fire while it is still covered in grease."
Janrith cackles gleefully as he watches the owlbear splash around in his grease puddle.
He reloads his crossbow.
Spell Durations Remaining:
(grease = 3 rounds}
Ovirid Thorvirson wrote:
The spell is a nice touch, also. It seems pertinent - will Ovirid be affected by the Grease if or when he attempts to stand or flee?
The target area is 10x10 feet, so it occupies the space directly under the owlbear. Unless you enter its space, or it moves, you are safe.
Seeing Ovirid prone, Janrith decides to make the Owlbear join him.
Casts grease under the owlbear (10ft square). DC 17 Reflex save or prone.
Whoops. It's been a while since I wrote up Janrith. I forgot he has a wand of cure light wounds. So those summon monsters were spells, not from a wand.
"Oh, you mean this?" Janrith waves the wand at the dwarf. "Well, why didn't you say so?"
He moves over to join the fray against the male owlbear. If Burp is out of melee range of the monster, Janrith will move up and use his wand. If not, he fires his crossbow at the owlbear.
{If crossbow: 1d20-1=4, 2 damage}
{If wand: 1d20+15=28, 7 healing}
Let me know which one he tries. Also, I got an error on my first roll so you'll see two in his history.
"Mundane fool! I am no practitioner of divine grace! I make my own power!"
Seeing on of his opponents fleeing, Janrith grins in satisfaction.
Tarren, I believe I posted Janrith's actions for Round 5. If I've missed a round, then Janrith will draw his heavy crossbow and begin loading (starts full round action).
Round 5:
Janrith looks around at both predators still active and still hunting his party. "Would you animals kindly perish? This is my space!"
He fires another series of missiles, this time at the other owlbear. His badger gets its full attack on the other creature.
I'm not sure, which one is male and which is female?
Magic Missile: 9 damage.
Badger claw, claw, bite: To hit: 19, 6, 2; Damage: 1.
Hoping to slow down the predator again, Janrith raises his wand and summons another celestial badger before the owlbear. If possible, he positions the creature to flank.
Claw, claw, bite: 10, 10, 15 (+2 if flanking), 1 damage each.
Janrith sighs and makes another series of cuts on his fingers. He fires his magic missile at the same target:
10 damage.
His badger is gone as of the end of his turn last round.
Tarren the Dungeon Master wrote: I'll wait for the celestial badger's attack for round 2 before continuing. Whoops. Thanks for the friendly reminder, Tarren.
Badger claw/claw/bite: 17/18/12, damage 1/1/1. Then it disappears (wand @ caster level 1).
"Blast woman! We're under attack and you ride in like a Gith on dragonback! There are two owlbears," he shouts as he points out each one in turn.
Welcome back Yin, hope things are settling down for you.
"Blast it all, these things are hideous."
Janrith stays within range of his summoned creature, keeping his wand in hand. With his free hand he sends forth a magic missile spell: two bolts that appear as copper daggers streak forward from his bleeding fingers and slam into the nearest owlbear.
Magic missile damage total: 8
In that case, he places the creature next to the hiding one, and calls out to make its presence known.
Janrith instinctively calls upon his primary resource: arcane power.
Moving within range of the beast (25 feet), drawing his wand as he moves. He activates the spell contained within, calling upon a celestial badger, he places the creature next to the bear-creature in the hopes of distracting it momentarily from the mounts.
Celestial badger full attack: misses unless 11 hits.
In character, he is getting impatient. But personally I would prefer to wait for Yin to come back in full.
Janrith begins pacing back and forth after tying up his horse.
"We should get on with this as soon as possible. No point wasting time."
I agree to wait for the others.
As to strategy, Janrith is more than happy to discuss how his summons will be used in battle to distract the enemy and help the warriors flank their opponents.
Anybody have any idea what the conditions in the caves are like?
Also, he will announce (with Yin absent) that being a sorcerer he has no need to prepare his spells, he is always ready.
Banking some rolls:
Initiative: 1d20+2 = 5, 15, 10, 17
Perception: 1d20+2 = 14, 21, 4, 4 (add +2 for sight/sound based checks)
Janrith has groggily accompanied the dwarf out to the caves. He is a decent rider, but is counting on the training of the light warhorse to keep him mounted in most situations.
Sorry to be out of the loop, Tarren. But am I in this thread now?
Any possibility of buying a scroll of summon monster?
Janrith is fine with horses, and will accept the load on a light warhorse from the Keep. If possible, he will also request a pack mule or even a pulled wagon.
Janrith is best served in the middle of the group for marching order.
Janrith literally sleeps until someone wakes him.
Janrith's ears twitch slightly at the knock on the door. Raising his head to see Yin enter, he watches until the door is shut again and the sounds of moving furniture stop before laying his head back down.
He seems more bothered by the noise rather than any possible impropriety.
Janrith piles sheets and clothes on the floor, with noising pounding and pacing he slowly makes a nest for himself. He buries his valuables under the pile. Satisfied, he takes one last look around the room before curling up into ball to fall asleep.
"Very gracious of you, my Lord."
Spiders!? Sounds like a quest. How much gold do we get?
"Ah, but it is the times you do not have the crossbow that one regrets."
"Well, my good dwarf, I am no slouch with a weapon, ranged or not. I do have these after all." He flashes a hand; razor sharp claws, a deep onyx, protrude from his fingers. "I also have this and this." He points to a dagger and a crossbow at his side and back respectively.
"As for healing, my *ahem* lineage permits me to dabble in many magical endeavours. This small piece of crystal and my talent you might find more valuable than a stalwart cleric, blessed as they may be."
A few necessities (multiples of each) that Janrith eagerly whispers to Yin:
Spell components x4
Holy Water x2
Everburning torch
Rations (no idea, Janrith is used to only providing for himself)
Parchments, ink, pen (for mapping)
"I once considered attending a Bardic College, my parents certainly encouraged the notion. Something about it being the family tradition. Of course, I developed my own talents. Never discovered which parent those were from."
Janrith noticeably glances between the attractive Shoanti woman and the dwarf during their conversation. He steps forward slightly, as if to place himself between them.
"Lady...Yin, was it? I sense the arcane arts surround you. Perhaps we could discuss the finer points of spellcraft in our time together?" the half-elf purrs. His eyes shift back to the dwarf and back. "In my experience, dwarves often have little practical knowledge of such things."
Janrith seats himself, even if it is inappropriate, quietly and smoothly. In a smooth voice, "This whole business with fighting and talking. Personally, I find it rather distasteful. So much better to have magic solve your problems for you. With all due respect, Lord Kerrigan, men are expensive and loyalty is not guaranteed. I think you will find that creatures compelled by magic are much more efficient."
Janrith doesn't really know he is being rude. He relies on his charm and beauty to keep people from getting their backs up.
