Sorry, nosey, but what memories are you two referring to?

And the cover looks great, look forward to the book coming in the mail!

That would be a RotRL AP spoiler. Not really a big one but just to be safe...

That is a picture of PCs make their assault on the goblin stronghold of Thisletop. A very memorable section of my favorite adventure, Burnt Offerings.

That cover certainly brings back good memories.

I was about to type the exact same thing, word for word before I saw your post. Great minds.. :-)

I read the magic items page over and over and read that only clothing shrink and grow. Erylium's dagger remains that size although it could be used following special rules for under and oversized weapons. Magic armors except full plate could be adjusted by paying the right price to a blacksmith/wizard but don't shrink automatically as well.

Wow, you're right, we've been doing it wrong the whole time! Oh well, RotRL doesn't really give you enough loot anyway. I think I'll actually stick with the way I've been doing it.

Beek Gwenders of Croodle wrote:

A bit OT: Jaagrath has a belt of giant strength. Magic items description says clothing shrink and grow to fit its wearer, so the barbarian in my group will be able to use it?

Yep, they should be able to use any magic items from various enemies. Also note that this works for smaller creatures too, such as Erylium's dagger of returning. I think that this is a change between 3.5 to Pathfinder and a good one at that. Nothing worse than getting a cool new magic item and you can't use it because it's over-sized.

If you dislike the 4E ruleset will you dislike this game as well?

Or are the rules for the game not like the 4E rules?

Or something else?

Kind of a more simplified version, yeah. Honestly though, it works really well for a board game.

From listening to the Pathfinder podcast it sounds like a lot of the "classes" might be handled by archeytpes. Which sounds GREAT to me.

So, Voska66 is using 1D6 all the time and Shar Tahl is starting off with 1D4 and moving to 1D6 at 7th level as per the claw attack. Kolokotroni, what way did you end up ruling this?

Mine shipped yesterday so I hope to play this soon myself. Personally I am going to treat this like I treat my RPG games, I'll house rule in anything I think makes the game better. People in the conventions around here house rule the heck out of games like DOOM! and Descent, so its not like I am starting a new movement among board gamers by doing so.

I don't think house ruling in this game will be a big deal at all. The rules just aren't complex enough to make it a problem. If you were able to house rule Descent without running into unforeseen problems then you shouldn't have any issues customizing this game.

Does anyone know if this was addressed officially? I couldn't find anything in the errata about it.

Snorter wrote:

The review states that this is a cooperative game; that either all the players win, or all the players lose.

How does that work for players who get their characters killed during the game?

Do they get some posthumous Pyhhric victory?

If one character dies, it's game over. However, there are healing surge tokens that you can spend to let you go to like half or quarter HP once you've reached zero. You start off with two tokens and I think you can earn more somehow throughout the game.

yoda8myhead wrote:
Also, there are a lot of tokens and markers that aren't described, so I've got a ton of pieces here and only a vague idea of how to put them together.

I had this same problem. I looked around on BGG for awhile though and apparently most of those tokens are for different missions. For example the monster tokens are for an adventure that randomizes the number of monsters you encounter in each tile. I agree though, they really should have made that clear in the rulebook. I tried the solo mission first and it took me way longer to set-up because I thought I was missing what to do with all of those extra tokens.

Also, I thought we had seen the last of the Yoda alias now that you're all official and stuff.

My players just finished the fight with the Scarecrow and are about to take the long walk of doom to the top of the Shadow Clock. I decided to let them level to 7 before the fight, but I'm not going to dumb down Xanesha at all.

I GM a bi-weekly game of Rise of the Runelords and play in a weekly game of Curse of the Crimson Throne. Both are converted to Pathfinder rules.

Another vote for a generic minis forum.

StanC wrote:

I notice that they have another version of the board game coming out in November. Has anything been said as to wether or not it will be another complete version of the game or will be an expansion to Ravenloft.

The other one is stand-alone, but the two will be compatible.

EDIT: You can check out more details here.

Okay gotcha, I'm not very familiar with the DDM or Heroscape lines. I was just thinking along the lines of board game standards. Also, welcome to the boards Torun!

It is sad. What also is sad is that Wizards can't find the time to be bothered to make a quality product that can be used for D&D without making you make a horrible face. They don't paint miniatures anymore? I was so excited to see that the set contained 40 miniatures. I was thinking "Surely this is amazing! I can finally get the undead I needed." Then I watched the video and the rage hit hard. Unpainted miniatures. <Insert angry string of incoherency here>

I've seen a couple people complain about the minis in this game not being painted. I may be missing something or may be uninformed, but what board games DO come with painted minis? My copies of Descent and Spacehulk both came with unpainted minis.. where is this precedent coming from?

The Forgotten wrote:
Can I get the AP subscriber discount on a current order if I've indicated that the AP subscription shouldn't start until the next AP? Also am I right that the next AP will feature undead?

I actually think your only option for starting an AP subscription is for this issue or the next one, not this AP or the next one.

Carrion Crow is the next AP and yeah, it should have a healthy dose of undead in it. You can read about it Here .

If she were coming back in my game, I would probably apply the Half fiend template and re-stat her using the Anti-Paladin class.

This is just a reiteration, but yeah, what Neil and Deinol said. You really don't need it, but it also happens to be my favorite Chronicles book, so I highly recommend it.

Erylium fell to a REALLY stupid mistake on my part. After a long combat of the Quasit wearing the party down with summons and her returning dagger, the cleric decided to give the sleep spell a shot. I don't know what I looked at, class level, CR or what to determine that the spell worked, but I did. Of course she failed her save, fell to the ground and was turned to squishy paste. Not exactly my finest moment as a GM.

Very nice.

Ask your DM. He should be able to give you a decent idea, and if not then it is up to him really. If there is an in depth pre-game backstory for each character I can see why he wouldn't want to give you too much information.

I assert that this is metagaming at its worst, coming to a forum specifically asking for what the best favored enemies are so you can get those on your character. You are trying to apply out of game knowledge that your character would have no idea of to your advantage, ei, metagaming.

It's not any different than asking about the usefulness of a mount in a campaign. A player should be allowed to use his class features, and there's nothing wrong or even that spoilerish about asking what enemy types will be appearing in a campaign.
+1
+1,+2,+3,etc etc etc.

+ a bunch for me too. I actually make it a point to let my ranger players know a couple of good options for the upcoming story. Favored enemy is too big a part of the Ranger's class features to let it go to waste on an enemy who will never show up.

All of those characters were interesting, usable and with a good story behind them. Plus varying hooks for how to integrate them with the PCs. The GMG NPCs are great, but more for quick use and combat stats than as recurring or interesting characters.

This is why I was wondering if the NPC book would be generic or Golarion themed. The GMG has a lot of generic stat blocks in it. I don't think I really need anymore. However, if this were a Golarion themed book, with in depth backgrounds, motivations and such, I could definitely use it. Or just read it for fun and inspiration.

Edit: Yay Lazarus. Boo Post monster.

Would the NPC guide be Golarion flavored or generic?

I gained a healthy fear of Beholders from the Labyrinth of Madness. Although everything in that adventure made me paranoid as hell.

Honestly though, I think that the most of the horror and creepiness in a game comes from a good GM and more importantly, willing players. If players don't allow themselves to be caught up in the mood then it doesn't really matter what the monsters are.

IF you run this your players will hate you forever.

If I were one of your players, I would love you forever. This is probably my favorite adventure of all time (Burnt offerings is close though). Seriously, good luck on this and keep us posted.

Assuming that you are playing in a home game where you have some creative freedom, I would just file the serial numbers off of the witch. Use the mechanics and re-skin the concept.

I'm doing that right now with my "cleric" of Pharasma. As an example, I re-flavored my Cackle ability to manipulating fate and auras to screw with my opponent.

In your case, maybe the owl familiar could be re-flavored to an air elemental and swirling winds could be used to distract your enemies (representing misfortune). I've had some fun getting creative and messing around with that stuff. Give it a shot.

All of that said, playing a MT is painful. K's explanation above pretty much echos my experiences.

Same here.

Actually, once I'm in the hallway outside of my office, there is a giant spiral ramp that leads down to the next floor. "Chairing" (riding chairs down the ramp) as it's been coined here is strictly prohibited, but I'm sure an exception would be made in the case of lava floors...

Hop from desk chair to desk, from desk to guest chair, push off of desk, glide to freedom.

I 've actually completed a short pdf of a conversion guide for using Ravenloft with pathfinder. You can find it for download.

I love the setting and can't recommend it enough.

The link to your PDF is broken Ugly Child. Do I need the Pathfinder Bestiary to run it, or do the Ravenloft campaign guides have their own npc's that I will need to update?

Try this.

This is a great idea. I'll post my original untagged map turnover on the blog Friday for use as a copy of the map found in the Jenivere.

EDIT: Crap. Normally I keep my original maps. I don't think I did this time. If I can't find it, at least I'll post a copy of the island as an untagged image, though.

Thanks James!

Also, Alexander your map is quite nice, if a little printer-unfriendly.

Seriously, the only spoilers are in the mechanics, so unless you're less than halfway through the book, you should be fine.

I just picked up the book and i'm a sloooow reader. So this this helps a bunch. I'll pick up the mag a little later then. Thanks!

I think the main message board page is way too cluttered. I'd like to see Adventure Paths being an entry on the main page and open a forum containing all the adventure paths. The same thing with the RPG superstar contest years - it makes the main page very cumbersome. I'm sure there are other places that could use this treatment in order to make the main page more usable.

Just an FYI, you can use the arrows next to the main forum topics to collapse the subtopics and achieve this effect.

What do you think a beholder's set of binoculars would look like?

I ran one player who was an Inquisitor through this. He did just fine by himself on the first one. You're saying that you had one player complete the first two books of RotRL on his own?! That's insane!

You could help them out with some extra healing potions and wands of CLW. Remember, it's not their fault that there are only three of them.

Another option is to knock a couple hit points off of some of the enemies. I have to do the opposite in my RotRl game because I've got too many players.

Yeah, I get it. I'm just being impatient, since my FLGS is among those stores respecting the street date. I don't actually expect them to release it early.

Agreed! Release the PDF!!

Edit: Please!

It used to be Ravenloft Forgotten Realms and home brew. Now it's exclusively Golarion, as I run the APs.

@Meatrace:
Keep us informed on how the Grand conjunction modules go. I played a little into the first module (I think) using 3.0. My memory is a little blurry as this was almost 10 years ago, but I do recall the cultist's glass daggers being brutal. I think they did strength damage instead of normal damage and we were ill equipped to handle them.
