Ranger Spells Someday

Appearance:

Brief:A tall, well built, dusky tanned, slightly green-skinned kid with neat clothes and hair.

Extended: At first sight, a young Varisian man, in the bright vest and belt, favored by such. It's only sightly unusual to see the leather tunic and cuirass, under the gold-trimmed maroon vest and matching belt. The large belt with its golden studs support attached pouches. Not uncommon also is the sheathed dagger but strapping to the thigh is a rare twist. Not that anyone would worry about a dagger compared to the back hung greatsword. All reasonable for a frontier guardsman in Varisia, if you overlook the greenish skin, large pointed ears and golden eyes of an orc-blood. No tusks, though, and his friendly demeanor invites some trust.

Background:

Background
Road-born to two half orcs, Henric and Mireanda, Iozif has a destiny for a life of travel and adventure. Henric worked as a Caravan Guard and Drover for many a caravan master in Varisia.

He married Mireanda, a bandit captured by and indentured to, the caravan he worked. When Iozif turned nine his parents argued and Mireanda ran off, a day before her service was to end. No one bothered to report her. Henric continued to raise his son in his own mold.

Koya often took a gradnmotherly role with the hurt child. Iozif took well to scouting and other aspects of caravan life and over time comes close to the sprits of the land and beasts, guided by Koya. One day bandits raided the caravan and the aging Henric's luck ran out. Iozif buries his father along the road, taking with himself a excellent backpack, a few items of use, and the families lifetime savings. Now looking to his future.

Flashbacks:

A boy cries silently in his bed, in the wagon, as his parents scream at each other. He does not understand why or what they are fighting over, but it does not matter; if not one thing then another. It grows quiet. He is almost asleep when his mother comes in, takes a few items and leaves.

No kiss, no goodbye, nothing. He never sees her again. Days later Koya comforts him. "Daddy's mad all the time and mommy left without sayin' anything." he sniffs. Koya says "I'll be around for a long time Iozif. And your daddy will get better, I'm sure." Koya talks to Henric and he comes and says "Sorry son, Mireanda left because she never liked it here but that is not your fault, come lets get some of those sweetmeats the cook's been hiding."

The Caravan is ambushed in a bad position, days away from anywhere. Sandru Vhiski directs the guards, Henric by his side. The young boy Iozif fires his bow again, arrows running low. A sudden crash and he turns to see his father cut down by a bold highwayman, while defending the master. He charges over, greatsword swinging, but he is outmatched. Reeling from a mighty blow, he expects the end when the man turns with an arrow sprouting from his back. Shalelu Andosana rides in shouting, "...all are dead or fleeing." Koya heals Iozif but shakes her head over Henric and closes his eyes. A young man buries his father, slient tears running. After this he promises himself, no more tears.

Sandru thanks Iozif for his father's sacrifice, "I would never have lived through that ambush, if your Dad hadn't protected me. I'll always remember that."

At the memorial servicem Ameiko Kaijitsu sings a great requiem worthy of a king. Iozif feels his heart breaking again but freezes his heart and for all that can be seen his face could have been carved from the finest dwarven stone. He thanks her for a moving tribute, and then stands in the towns chapel till all have left. He leaves, never looking back.
