"By the lady!"
I stare agog, slightly stunned by the speed of what has happened.
"Kenzo, are you okay?"
DM Wicht wrote: The door is locked but after some hesitation, Grayst decides to unlock it for Gyorgy.
"I'm going to lock it again," he says as Gyorgy steps in, "unless the rest of you want to go in with him. He is bound, but you never know, he might try to bite you and that would not be good."
As Gyorgy steps in and speaks, the man stops writhing for a moment and looks at Gyorgy glassily, drool dribbling from his mouth.
I kneel down, across the room from the man, attempting to seem non-threatening: "You look weak, perhaps I can use my magic to heal you?"
diplomacy (1d20+4=15)
"If his mind has gone then perhaps time will serve as his healer."
I pause for a moment before noting: "Although time is something we probably don't have agreat deal of at the moment."
DM Wicht wrote: "I am he," says the man, a certain wariness in his eyes, despite Mitnal's winning personality "The sheriff sent you did he? I don't suppose you could come back. I was just in the middle of something and it requires constant attention." "Well, we're not really here to see you anyway," I pause and smile: "Sheriff Hemlock asked us to come and speak to the gentleman he brought here a few days ago."
diplomacy (1d20+4=21)
I flash another encouraging smile: "You'd really be helping everyone a lot if we could just have some time with the poor fellow. The Sherrif said we could rely on you."
"Nice to meet you, Breimhalt."
I hurry after the big man.
I nod back and stop next to the man: "Hello, I'm Gyorgy."
I offer him my hand: "This is Mitnal, Kenzo and Gerhardt."
I nod in the direction of each of my fellows as I say their name.
Kenzo wrote: Walking out of the Mill, they run into Kenzo, who is jogging up. "What's going on? I heard something's up, he asks. "Gerhardt, Sheriff," he adds with a nod.
It looks like you could still use a player or two.
Damn, Straight! High-fives all round!
"Oh, um, hey Kenzo." I drop my voice: "You'd best come inside. Brace yourself, it's pretty horrendous in here."
Mitnal wrote: Mitnal is stumped.
Here's a place where having read the adventure means I should keep my mouth shut. (Or, have all of you read it already?).
That is a good point, I have also read, and GMed, the adventures and was just thinking about how Gyorgy would respond. Unfortunately he has a rather bad head-cold today and can't concentrate... Over to you, Gerhardt
"Aaachooo!"
DM Wicht wrote: The grisly corpse is a very bady mangled body of a young girl.
Mitnal, after carefully searching for tracks does indeed find that there are the remnants of wet footprints near to the river, as if someone swam up to the lumber-mill from the river and then climbed in.
Searching the rest of the lumber-mill provides little more.
As you complete your investigations, the sheriff asks, "Thoughts?"
"There needs to be a reason for the killings. How was the Mill doing, financially? Was this an affair?"
I scratch my cheek thoughtfully and look around the room: "And what is that smell of rotten meat?"
DM Wicht wrote: Someone carved a rune into the miller's bare chest. Gerhardt does not recognize it right off, but Gyorgy does. It is the same Sihedron rune as was on a pendant worn by Nualia. Eugen had the pendant last and took it with him north. "Nualia's sign!"
I poke Mitnal in the ribs: "That sign, we saw it in Thistletop. Do you remember? Nualia had it on a pendant."
Aware of the Sheriff's presence, I conveniently fail to mention that Eugen now has the pendant.
Somehow getting used to the stench and the gore I wander over and look at the marks in Harker's chest.
DM Wicht wrote: The dead-thing smell is stronger near the axe. There are bits of hair and maybe skin along the axe blade, though strangely no blood. The blood is all on the handle - bloody handprints. "This axe is really disgusting."
I give my allies a wave: "Bloody handprints all over the handle, but not the blade. Smells disgusting."
I feel like Sherlock Holmes!
I move over to the window, lean out, and vomit.
Then I gasp in lungfuls of fresh air before returning to the scene.
I head straight for the door: "Best get on with this then, how bad could it be?"
I shrug and head into the mill.
DM Wicht wrote: As they walk, the sheriff answers Gyorgy's question, "Near as we can tell it was Benny Harker and Katrine Vinder. Harker's not a problem identifying but I'm making an educated guess about Katrine. What bothers me though is the fact that this is not the first of these murders we've had. There've been three others killed and the one witness is clearly insane." "Is the insane man a victim, or a suspect?"
"The lumbermill? Who's involved in this?"
I talk as we walk but go quiet if there's anyone else near.
Gerhardt Eilif wrote: "Chopper?" "A local hermit, he went mad and killed some people. It was the sheriff here who caught him."
I look Sheriff Hemlock straight in the eye: "We'll do our best, and we'll respect your wishes. Where did the crimes occur?"
can anything more be gleaned from the note?
"Eugene's in Riddleport by now: and anyone he was friendly with wouldn't have needed to leave creepy notes to get his attention."
I scratch my head and then catch myself doing it and stop: "This looks more like a threat. And, 'the pack' is that werewolves or something?"
I nod to Belor as I stand: "Gerhardt's right, we should take a look. I'll just get my stuff."
Then I head to my room and collect my gear.
DM Wicht wrote: The door of the inn opens and the sheriff stomps into the room, water dripping from his broad brimmed leather hat.
He takes a moment to scan the room as he shakes his coat and rubs his hands together. Satisfied that its not overly crowded, he stalks over to your table and asks, “Mind if I sit? I have something we need to talk about.”
I quickly swallow a mouthful of porridge: "Good morning, Belor; talk away."
I shrug: "It was more luck than judgement, that and Mitnal's tremendous instincts."
I nod my head toward our quiet friend: "And Kenzo's cool head."
Spying my aunt, Luba, leaving the kitchens; I raise my voice: "To be honest, we did those goblins a favour. They've never had a wallop from Luba's rolling pin."
I give her a cheeky grin and a wave.
"So, Gerhardt, how did you end up in Sandpoint?"
Hi, Gerhardt, I'm Gyorgy." I grin merrily, Don't mind Mitnal, he's a... an inspiration, a savant maybe."
I look around the room. "I don't really know what we're going to do next: Jessa was talking about some invite she'd had from her old professor and Eugen's just heading off to visit his family, after that letter he had."
I stand up: "Sorry, I'm blabbering. Let's get a drink and you can introduce me to your friend, Varg, wasn't it? You look more like an adventurer than the rest of us anyway. We're more like a bunch of people who were in the right place at the right time, or maybe the wrong time."
I laugh at my own weak joke as we reach the bar: "Hey, two rums, please, is Ameiko in?"
After that I introduce Gerhardt to Ameiko (if she is about) and find him a seat with the rest of us: then I tell him a rough version of our story so far.
Mitnal wrote: Mitnal's ready to go. With an stat bump to strength and an increase to BAB he should be keeping up but he still isn't a damage dealing machine like some barbarians. My charisma is now pretty incredible, need to start RPing that stat.
I'm raring to go.
Gerhardt Eilif wrote: Who here is levelled up completely? I am.
Glitterdust, woo-hoo!
So, Eugen leads, Mitnal follows with Nualia, then Jessa, Kenzo with the goblin and me at the back.
Heading back the way we came, turning off the trap at this end and avoiding the bird-killing monster.
Kenzo wrote: "She's tied up, I think Mitnal can handle her." Kenzo says. "As for this one," he continues, hauling the goblin to his feet. "I say we just let him go in the woods. If nothing else, I'm sure he'll tell others of his kind about what happened here."
When everyone is ready, he gives a nod to Eugen to lead them out.
"let's go."
"So, Nualia, why not talk to us? We're good listeners and it can't be easy with just goblins and bugbears for company."
I sigh, wearily: "C'mon, let's here why poor little Nualia burnt down the Sandpoint Chapel."
Gyrogy is making an educated guess here.
DM Wicht wrote: So, go or stay? As Jessa's already asked Nualia some questions, and made quite a speech, it might depend upon what Nualia says.
So far we have Jessa to stay, Gyorgy and Kenzo to go. Mitnal and Eugen need to decide (apologies for leaving Eugen out earlier.)
Kenzo wrote: Jessa channels Dr. Phil . . . .
"Jessa,I don't expect she's going to tell us much. Okay, Mitnal might get her to talk, but not you. Not unless you make her your 'friend' like you did with the goblin," Kenzo says. He looks to the others, and then adds, "I say we bring her back to Sandpoint, and get out of her. We've caused enough havoc that any invasion should be delayed, if not off completely. Without their leaders, the goblins will likely scatter and run."
"I think Kenzo's right, we've done what we came to do."
I shrug and look around the room; "If we need to come back and mop up then we can but we came to stop an attack and I think we've done that."
I turn to Jessa: "Don't look too hard at the ruins, I know you're interested but you can find out what she has to say back at Sandpoint, and Brodert can help you out."
"Um, I think we should get out of here without disturbing anything else."
I look around the room and shrug: "We've done what we came to. If we need to come back, we can."
Up to 6 hit points!
I whisper back: "Can you charm her?"
I would have volunteered for either first or final watch.
Need my 8 hours.
"By Our Fair Lady will you just shut up!"
In a state of confusion and annoyance, I cast daze upon the noisy goblin.
Kenzo wrote: "Yeah! Tying him up! That's right!" Kenzo effuses. "Anyone have any rope?" Looking around I see the rope in Eugen's pack: "Eugen, you genius!"
Then I grin broadly at my own pun.
"Someone help Kenzo."
I'm ready to fling another daze next round.
I cast daze, hoping to prevent the goblin from acting or speaking.
"I'm, uh, done in. I might take a later watch."
I sit down on one of the benches and try to avoid looking at anything sinister.
"Okay then, we camp here."
I frown slightly: "Um, Jessa, does your new friend want to find the first bed to settle down in. I'm sure he could do with a nice nap."
Kenzo wrote: "That reminds me of the fountain those things came out of back under Sandpoint," Kenzo offers. "Maybe we shouldn't stay here then?" I look around the room nervously: "I'll check it out." Examine the room, and specifically the fountain, with Detect Magic
Jeslara "Jessa" Eventide wrote: "Let's try that way," Jessa suggests, pointing at the door, "Nualia came from there. And if she felt comfortable in that room, maybe we will as well." "Let's give it a try."
I wait for someone else to open the door.
