Hi Guys,

Here's a quick update on shipping that Bill posted on the KS website on Monday:

We have packed everything except for orders containing the Maladies cards and the metal books. The Maladies cards are proofed and go to press very soon, so it will just be another couple weeks. Metal books will be somewhat delayed, as our bookbinder is in Europe until December. We have mailed (or will mail) all of the orders as soon as the cards arrive—metal books will be shipped separately as soon as they are done! Thank you all again for the patience—enjoy those extra poster maps!

Woohoo! It's the meekly self-deprecating bundle o' awesome from Frog God Games, Kobold Press, and Green Ronin (and lets not forget godfather Necromancer Games lurking there in the background)! Though now that I look at the Humble Bundle logo I kinda' think that's called a bindle rather than a bundle...[insert thinking emoji]. But who cares! That's some serious loot for some not-so-serious scratch, and it even goes for an awesome cause. And as an owner of all but 3 of those listed titles (reminder to self to get those last 3) I can attest that is some awesome stuff in there.

As Wolfgang and Bill both mentioned, FGG, Green Ronin, and Kobold Press are all offering hardcopy sales on their respective websites as well. And I can't speak for KP and GR, but I know the FGG Equally Modest Sale offers a lot of those same PF titles in the Sword & Wizardry system (and some even in 5e, I think) for any non-PF players who may be hanging out here on the Paizo boards.

So get in on this Humble Bindle sale while supplies last...
Ah, who am I kiddin'? They're pdfs. They'll be around forever (or at least until the machines take over). But it'll be tough to beat these deals. :-)

You guys are correct: there's no cross-pollination between the new S&W KS and the Blight KS. In fact, I only just found about the launch of the S&W KS from reading this page. [facepalm]

Anyway, as mentioned above. I just posted a big update on the Blight page. In summary, The Blight continues, I'd be concerned too (so no worries there about asking if you are), and we're going to get stuff into your virtual hands as fast as we can while sending it to the printer, etc.

Thanks all!

Quick update for Bard's Gate (and The Blight):

I'm about 80% through the development of Bard's Gate (a significantly lower percentage through development of The Blight - though other than a few odds and ends Alistair Rigg is still tinkering with, the manuscript for it is 100% in). This is just a perfect storm where products from two different arms of FGG ended up on my desk at the same time. Considering BG was about 50% a previously released and formatted book and I did the developmental groundwork for the new parts in spring 2015, it's just much faster work in progress than The Blight. I've just basically living under a rock since North Texas Con cranking on both of them. :)

So by way of update on The Blight, it's still going. It just has a lot more complexity and moving parts to it. That said, I hope to have some Tome of Blighted Horror art previews for you next week. :)

But enough about that for now. I came here to talk Bards Gate for the moment. Why should you get Bard's Gate?
Well, if you know the original, then it's got everything you liked about it refined, updated, expanded, and improved. Everything you didn't like about it has been fixed, revamped, and integrated. It's got a coherent, long-term history of the city and valley. No more guesswork about whens and how things fit together. Plus, as has been mentioned it's a lynch pin for the entire Gulf of Akados and Sinnar Coast regions and all of the books we've made to date that fall within that massive geographical area.

If you don't have the original, well then this one is worth a look because it's a big awesome city book with hundreds of keyed encounter areas, beautiful maps, a ton of built-in adventures, and gorgeous full-color art by Artem Shukaev and Colin Chan.

A few more tidbits that make this a must have:
In addition to an expansive ToC this book has
An index of important people, places, and groups;
A chapter fully describing the various guilds, military organizations, non-military organizations, and secret organizations (including hidden cults) that gives info on leaders/key members and meeting locations;
A complete city directory breaking down all of the city's locations into categories such as: city government, religious, craftsmen, hospitality, entertainment, comestibles, dry goods, services, magical services, illicit services, and much more. Basically if your PCs need to know where to find something, this handy directory makes finding it (or more likely the multiple options for it) right at your fingertips;
Two new city districts: Underhill and the Catacombs;
The long-missed Citadel of Ravens (first mentioned alongside the famed Citadel of Griffons in the original book and then mysteriously absent beyond that single mention);
Ethnographies of the various types of inhabitants of the city tying them in with the many other FGG and NG products including such classics as The Grey Citadel, fan favorites like Sword of Air, and even forthcoming products like Mountains of Madness;
Finally an explanation of what's the deal with the Duchy of Waymarch and what does it have to do with the city;
The back stories of Tomb of Abysthor and parts of The Slumbering Tsar Saga, The Northlands Saga Complete, and Shades of Gray;
And an explanation of who the heck the Bandit King was;
And much, much more.
Plus it's got so many shout-outs, Easter eggs, and tributes to 4 decades of gaming packed into it that you'll want to punch us in the face before you're through. ;)

And if all that doesn't sell you on it, you're probably a soulless zombie. In which case did I mention the City of Ashes and Cult of Orcus…

What davrion said with the addition of:
What Evil Lurks is set in Hawkmoon and was in fact the original Hawkmoon title, I believe.
Raise the Dead is multiple scenarios that do not necessarily tie in directly with Hawkmoon, but I think one or more of them might be associated with Hawkmoon. Can't remember for sure offhand.

Alright back into my working pit. Maybe they'll leave the lid open just a crack for me. :)

P.S. Legends of Hawkmoon to definitively connect and flesh all those titles out…just as soon as I get finished with The Blight…and The canon review of Bard's Gate…and the Lost Lands Campaign Setting...
I'm saying it may still be a little while. ;)

Hi All,

I'm writing this from North Texas Con...the week after Paizo Con...the week after my last med school final of third year. All that is to say, things are keeping me hopping right now and away from updating on The Blight and such. However, all is still good, and I'm goad you asked.

The writing for The Blight is finished in its entirety except for Bill's adventure and has been turned into me. It is about 80% through its first developmental pass with Al Rigg, Jeff Swank, and others, and is sitting on my desk for its final development and canon pass. Which brings me back to my hopping mentioned above.

So rest assured the product exists in almost its entirety and is now at the mercy of one guy trying to get through the quantity of writing that has amassed. The good news is it's happening. :-) But unfortunately, it's happening at the speed of Greg. :-(

Anyway, I wanted to pop by and give an update since folks are asking to let you know where we are in its progress.

Thanks for your support!

The Borderland Provinces are mainly due south of the area covered in Sword of Air, and the Sundered Kingdoms are southeast or it. Southwest of the Sword of Air areas would be the Kingdoms of Foere, which we have not yet published.

From what I understand, QoD3 is the adventures from the environment books (Fields of Blood, Dunes of Desolation). These were PF only, so this new book will be conversions of the adventures (but not the rules?).

And from Glades of Death as well, but this is otherwise correct.

The environment books (Perilous Vistas) are PF-only books that rely on the intricacies of the PF rules system that do not correlate well with the more simplified 5e and S&W systems (no point in converting feats for S&W, for instance, since it doesn't use feats). Anyway, the resulting conversions of actually relevant rules material would be so thin, they would hardly qualify as "books" really. Rather than try to tack such a sparse product onto the adventures within (which convert just fine between systems) we figured it would give a better product value to just combine those adventures into products (i.e. the QoD line of books) to make them available for the other systems in addition to PF.

Pathfinder Creative Director, Frog God Games

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Because of the vagaries of the original QoD 5e KS and the fact that some adventures featured in the QoD series already existed in PF and/or S&W and therefore did not need a reprint just to try and grab dollars from fans, the series got off to a bit of a tangled start. Below is the general translation (it's actually not that difficult once you see the mechanism behind the madness). Also, we're starting to put an "Other FGG Products" page at the front of all our new books (starting with QoD2 I believe) to help folks keep things straight. The initial volume issue aside, for everything else it's just a matter if the adventures within already exist in a given system.

Explainer:

Quests of Doom, Vol 1 - 5e only
--6 adventures previously published in 3.5e by Necromancer Games (updated to 5e) and 6 new adventures written for 5e. This was our original promotional project to test the waters of the nascent 3PP 5e market.

Quests of Doom, Vol 2 - 5e only
--6 original adventures written for 5e and included as stretch goals in the original QoD KS, but the stretch goals were not met so they could not be included. Rather than waste the adventurers, they were compiled into a second volume of the QoD and released as a short second book.

Quests of Doom - PF and S&W
--This is all 18 of the adventures found in QoD, Vol 1, and QoD, Vol 2. The outcry from fans was so great for PF and S&W versions of the above adventures, that they were updated to those systems as well. Since it wasn't tied to KS stretch goals, it didn't make since from a publishing standpoint or a consumer standpoint to have it split into two smaller volumes, we combined it into one.
This is the book that most folks refer to as QoD 1 (though we don't call it that to prevent confusion with QoD, Vol. 1 which only has 2/3 of the adventures. Some people call it QoD Complete (which I like, but since we decided it would be the launch of an entire line we thought that would be confusing as well).
To be clear: All of the adventures in QoD are the same as in QoD Vols. 1 and 2 combined, just for different game systems. And NONE of the 18 adventurers found within had ever been updated to PF rules before.

Quests of Doom 2 - 5e only
--This book has 6 adventures that already exist in various FGG products in PF and S&W versions, so there was no reason to make it for those versions as well just to try and squeeze more money out of our PF and S&W customers. However, our new 5e fans did have an appetite for more adventures and did not have access to 5e versions of these 6 unless they converted them themselves. We decided to save them the trouble and do it for them. :-)

Quests of Doom 3 - 5e and S&W (the current KS)
--This book has 8 or so (can't remember the exact number) adventures that already exist in FGG products for PF (or are in the works, such as Glades of Death which is undergoing a PF update and is the source of a couple of the adventures herein). So this book only needed to be updated for 5e and S&W versions.

Quests of Doom 4 - PF, 5e, and S&W (upcoming in late 2016)
--This is the first QoD volume of ALL original adventures. That means there aren't any of them already published in any version. So like QoD (or QoD, Vols 1 & 2 depending on the version you play), this is the first one to be made for all three systems since then.

Quests of Doom 5 - 5e and S&W??? (not sure on release date)
--I'm going from memory here, but I think this is another book where the adventures have already been/are being published for PF so this book will only need to be made for 5e and S&W versions.

The plans for the line continue, but that's as far as I can remember. QoD6 may also be underway with all original adventures for all 3 systems again, but I honestly can't remember for sure.

Anyway, I hope that clears up the muck some. Hopefully by QoD6 all of the QoD vs. QoD, Vols 1&2 will be well behind us. :-)

P.S. Book of Alchemy is still in the works. It's just a project that, being true to its subject matter, requires a slow simmer. I can't begin to guess what kinds of lymphomas and neuro deficits John Ling is going to develop from being steeped in all those alchemical reagents for so long. But, it's cool, we always told him he was expendable...or maybe we didn't, I don't recall at the moment. Meh, either way.

Quick Update:

We hit the button on the Blight KS page earlier this morning. It is now in the hands of the Kickstarter approval process to be launched. Supposedly this can take up to three days. In our experience with KS in the past, this has taken about 10 minutes. Apparently we're falling somewhere in between. But what that means is that it can appear at any moment. So if you see it, start a thread here with a link. I'm on a short lunch break but will be in clinic the rest of the afternoon, Bill is at a game convention, and Matt is out Matting like a Matt (I don't actually know what Matt is doing). I'm just saying, we may not be the first to see it, so be sure and let the cat out of the bag if you do.

Hi mach1.9pants,

We know that there is 5e support out there. The question is if it is there for campaign materials and adventure paths or not. The Kobold's monster book is just that, a monster book. Our own monster book, Fifth Edition Foes, sold very well. But Borderland Provinces is a campaign setting book, and WotC has been focusing a lot of attention on their own setting of the Forgotten Realms, so it's not an unfilled niche like additional monster books are.

We're not testing to see if there is 5e support (we know there is). We're testing to see if there's 5e support for a product like Borderland Provinces.

And I'm with you, I hope there's a ton of support. I'd love to see Rappan Athuk, Slumbering Tsar, Barakus, etc. emerge with 5e versions to terrify and abuse a whole new edition of gamers. :-)

Just like the title said. Tonight at midnight begins the 7th Day of Halloween (as we at Frog God Games count such things), so in celebration we're releasing a free preview pdf of the first 10 pages of Richard Pett's much-anticipated master campaign and adventure path.

This is the campaign from which Richard originally spawned his classic modules set in "The Styes" back in Dungeon Magazine. He's written the complete campaign book and a 9-module adventure path set there, and Frog God Games is going to launch a Kickstarter for it on November 15th. But before then, we're releasing a free pdf preview of the Guide to the Blight's first 10 pages to let you get an idea of the madness...ahem, mayhem...erm, masochism...having a hard time coming up with a non-perjorative term...no, madness is probably most accurate that is The Blight: Richard Pett's Crooked City.

So check it out here under the Updates tab to download your pdf.

But beware. The free pdf will only be available from midnight tonight until midnight tomorrow.So don't miss out.

THE TERROR RETURNS TONIGHT!!

Do you have fond memories of "The Styes" from the halcyon days of Dungeon Magazine?
Perhaps a bit of lingering PTSD?
Were you afraid that it was gone forever? (or maybe you wanted it to be?)

Well fret not, friends and fiends, because Richard Pett's very own campaign from which "The Styes" was spawned lives on...lives again...whichever...in The Blight: Richard Pett's Crooked City forthcoming from Frog God Games.

See where the madness began and where it was first afflicted upon the poor souls who have had the misfortune to be trapped in Rich's home game for the past few decades (usually strapped to a chair in a bricked up room is my understanding)

And tonight at the stroke of midnight, a special preview pdf revealing the first 10 pages of this dastardly edition of devious d...something (writing is hard!) will be released for free download here under the Updates tab. Previous updates on this page also include special treats from the previous 6 days of The Blight reveals in anticipation of this Halloween release.

But this special release will be available only from midnight at the eve of All Hallow's Eve until midnight at the eve of...post-All Hallow's Eve...that's probably not very clear. Okay it's available from midnight tonight until midnight tomorrow. After that the link will be taken down and this special free preview pdf will disappear into the aether...forever.

Actually, it'll probably pop back up at some time during The Blight KS that will be launched by Frog God Games on Nov. 15, but Halloween is the only time you will be able to get it before then. So don't miss out!

The Lantern Man gives it four thumbs up!

Closer to Stoneheart Valley. We don't have an accurate prediction of page count yet because there are a lot of tables and maps, which mean we won't really know until Chuck has almost completed the layout. But definitely closer to Stoneheart Valley than to CotSK.
Is this going to be a companion book to CotSK then? The area seems missing so is needed badly. I wants it! Give me my precious!

Basically, yes. Since Cults of the Sundered Kingdoms only covered sort of the central and eastern third of the Sinnar Coast Region Map, Borderland Provinces picks up the slack and details everything else except, the Kingdom of Oceanus, the Domain of Hawkmoon, and Cerediun Province, all of which will be part of future Lost Lands books. And unlike CotSK, Borderland Provinces does not include an adventure path. It is almost strictly a gazetteer, though with copious encounter tables, minor adventure areas, etc. (I say almost strictly because Matt did write on cool full length adventure which is in it). As a result, Borderland Provinces is a much skinnier book than CotSK and much closer in size and price to Stoneheart Valley than Cults.

As a quick plug, basically the entire book was written by Matt Finch (and it's brilliant by the way) using the Sinnar Coast Map for his parameters and my extensive Lost Lands design notes for those undetailed parts of the Sinnar Coast as his guide. So while it's all in Matt's voice (which if you've read Cyclopean Deeps 1&2, you know is awesome), it meshes seamlessly with CotSK and the overall development of the Lost Lands and gives a nice big new chunk to chew on with it to complete the Sinnar Coast Region. When Bard's Gate Complete is released next year and details a large chunk of the southern portion of the Gulf of Akados Region Map where is connects up with the Sinnar Coast, you're going to have a good-sized core area of Lost Lands as a playground to mess around in with your campaigns that includes a number of the Necromancer Games classics (Rappan Athuk, Barakus, Bard's Gate, Tomb of Abysthor, Aberrations, Trouble in Durbenford, Morrick Mansion, The Crystal Skull, and more I'm probably forgetting) plus a bunch of new FGG classics (Slumbering Tsar, Sword of Air, the CotSK new adventures, a bunch of the Quests of Doom stuff, etc.). I think it's going to be pretty cool. :-)

And if you want more Borderland Provinces action, never fear because there is a companion volume that will be available with it called Adventures in the Borderland Provinces for those so inclined to seek adventure there. :-) My understanding is that it's written by some werebat or vampire mouse or something or other...can't remember his name at the moment, but I think he's written a couple other things. ;-)

I'm not whining - just saddened!

I am admittedly a bit noobish when it comes to anything kickstarter. How do these projects end up? After they're funded, is that the end of the production? In other words, is the only way to obtain one of these books to be part of the original KS campaign? (or be lucky enough to find a 2nd-hand copy on Ebay down the road)

Sorry for the steep price, Zedth. These books are fairly costly to make not to mention the time spent in writing and development. I'll second what everyone else said, pretty much. The price doesn't come out so bad when you figure you're getting the adventure equivalent of more than 2 Paizo APs plus campaign setting info equal to probably an AP's worth of non-adventure stuff as well, all of which would retail for more than $200.

However, yes, it will be available for sale through the FGG website and right here at Paizo.com.

You can, of course, always buy-in for a much lower price-point for the pdf option if you're interested in the material and just don't want to shell out for the hardback. If not, hopefully it'll work for you better at a later date.

On a good note, look for a much more affordable KS from FGG for The Lost Lands: Borderland Provinces in January.

Unfortunately, out next KS before then is Richard Pett's The Blight and it's another BIG BOOK...but a big book of awesome I must add (that's because I actually ghost wrote most of it). ;-)

Gerald wrote:

Gerald, the free pdf stretch goal map is Gulf of Akados, which is the same one that was released previously with Sword of Air. We like to throw that sort of thing in as a very low-end stretch goal for the benefit of anyone who is not already familiar with the Lost Lands setting. For those who already have them, it's not really a benefit. That's why it's such a low-level stretch goal.

However, The Northlands Saga Complete also comes with its own poster map of the Northlands which is not something that has previously been released. We are also selling it separate as an add-on for anyone who would like an extra copy (it already comes with the hardcopy of the book) or who would like the map without having to buy the hardcopy of the book.

So depending on which map you are referring to the answer to your question is either yes or no. ;-)

I just stumbled across Endzeitgeist's reviews of a couple of the original Northlands adventures that have been included, updated, and greatly expanded upon for The Northlands Saga Complete. Orthos and CWheezy have both made an excellent point about Northlands, though (albeit in extremely different ways). Northlands is absolutely not your typical PF setting. In fact, this might be the kind of info that OSW was looking for earlier now that I think about it. The Northlands Saga Complete is very much geared towards the RP and local culture aspect of the Northlands themselves. Incorporating the concepts of things like wyrd and death speeches into the setting certainly does go outside the typical PF norm. And CWheezy is pretty much spot on in regards to a strictly premium mechanical build aspect. I don't think some Northlands campaign characters would work very well in PFS, for instance, where optimizing character options can be an extremely important part of the game. However, Northlands Saga isn't trying to be just like every other PF setting but with a viking aftertaste; it's trying to be an authentic-feeling viking setting that's set in PF. This, I think, is an important distinction for the buyer to be aware of ahead of time in order to know what they are or aren't getting. And I think Bearsarker as an archetype is very illustrative of this.

Anyway, I hope that provides some clarification. Thanks for the comments and questions. Keep 'em coming! :-)

When I see a thread here, I usually check out the entire thread, and when a new page turns up I have often been the one to post a link to the Kickstarter page even if I am not a backer just to be helpful, and to support 3PPs. This is all I am suggesting Herald Frog/silverhair do - more than just bump, provide a link, even perhaps to the latest Update if available.

Those who are backing the KS will be getting official Kickstarter Updates direct to their email.

Given that I am not enticed by this, and thus represent non-FGG conversant fandom, I think the problem I'm seeing is that all silverhair's "bumps" are doing is keeping the thread title at the the top of the list, but not conveying anything new. The KS has been running for quite a while now, so I'm guessing most people on the forum are aware of the KS, but perhaps, like me, on the fence about backing it - thus they are seeing new posts, not being alerted to a thread that is new to them. As such, a bump with no new information is not as useful as a post with an update. And as I have pointed out, anyone already backing the KS is already getting those Updates.

Again, I am interested in Vikings, so the subject matter it of nominal interest to me, but beyond that, what is on offer? What is special about this? Not just page counts, but motes of interest, or some wow factor. So far all I have received (apart from silverhairs very general but honest and gracious note) is sarcasm and brush offs. If I have come across as entirely negative then that has not been my intention - I am merely trying to indicate that I am actually the target market being missed. Ask around, I may be grumpy and at times irritating, but I am a fierce proponent of 3PPs and want to see the market thrive and create.

Thank you for the clarification, OSW. I don't think you and I have ever met, and I can't say that I know much of anything about you or your particular tastes (other than what you've posted) . I do know that I appreciate what Silverhair is doing, so I didn't want him to feel like he wasn't being appreciated for his efforts. I get what you're saying about a link, but even if he doesn't put one in I still really appreciate him taking the time to do a bump.

As a very small company with only a handful of part-timers working on these projects, FGG is extremely limited as far as what it can do regarding social media, updates, and that sort of thing, and we absolutely cater to our existing fan base because they are the only means by which we exist. We do have a pretty good idea of what they like, so we gear our announcements and communications towards them first and foremost. If our existing customers are excited they help us get other people excited.

That said, we also are very much aware of the need to constantly reach new customers and are extremely interested in doing so. However, we don't know those new customers so we don't know specifically what they like to see. As you've said, you've never purchased one of our products and generally are not interested in what we have offered in the past. That's fine. But for Northlands we've posted information and updates about the physical qualities of the book, provided in-depth background and general contents summary, explained the basis for its development and level of historical authenticity that we have chosen in its development, have given many examples to show the kind of feel it has, have provided examples of concept art and examples of the types of atmosphere and intersting or original settings/tableaus that it explores, and have given out some actual crunch text in the form of the most recent archetype I posted. Not to mention there are dozens of customer testimonials on this and other threads about the extent that they like or support FGG as well as many explanations as to the why. I get that those are not doing anything for you, but for you to then say that none of it is interesting and that we should wow you is confusing to me. I have to ask what is interesting to you (other than vikings nominally, as you stated)?

It is entirely possible that there is nothing about this book to strike your interest, and if so that's fine. My feelings aren't hurt by someone who isn't a fan of ours. It may just be that what we make doesn't scratch your particular itch, and if so I'm sure there is somebody else's products that do. That's okay for us. We'd love to have you as a customer, but it seems like you've made a decision already about FGG without ever having read anything by FGG (at least as far as I can tell from what you've written). You're certainly free to judge a book by its cover if you want (no snark intended, it's something that people do everyday), and you're welcome to comment on this or any thread with your opinion about it. Your voice is as legitimate as anybody's. It's just that the things you are posting are perplexing to me. I'd like to show you something about Northlands or FGG that could pique your interest, but I honestly have no idea what you're looking for.

Anyway, I'm not trying to debate you or start a thread war or anything, so if my post seems confrontational please forgive me. I only wanted to explain my contradiction of you in regards to the Herald Frog and to try and engage you to see if there is something we could show you or tell you about the book. If it truly has nothing to offer you, there are certainly no hard feelings. We just like to listen to our customers and potential customers and address anything if we can.

And regardless, thank you for your support of 3PPs. Between the awesome access that Paizo gives us to the PF game and the support of folks like you, we all really benefit and appreciate it.

Sorry for the uber-long post. :-)

How do you see Naked Fury interacting with shields/shield bonuses? Does the bearsarker need to chew on the rim of his/her shield first?

The bearsarker can have a shield since it is not considered wearing armor, as long as its weight didn't encumber him. Chewing is optional.

PLEASE promote this book people, spread the word, it looks like its going to be awesome !

Thanks, Lorden!

I realize I'm totally biased, having written a great deal of this book and having developed all of it, but I have to say I am very pleased with how it has turned out. From its humble-but-excellent beginnings, it has really grown gracefully. And even now as I read back over the adventures in its final stages of production, I get really excited about them.

For what it costs, of course, everyone will have to be their own judge of it's value, but if you are even remotely interested in Viking-type settings or adventures you will not be disappointed. And if Vikings aren't your thing but you like a rugged northern setting with a variety of adventure types and locations, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

You guys know the kind of stuff FGG puts out, and you know the kinds of adventures that I like and that I write. So for whatever that's worth to you, there it is.

The Northlands Saga Complete is the new campaign guide and adventure path being released by Frog God Games through Kickstarter (here). It’s being releases in versions for both Pathfinder Roleplaying Game (with the adventure path for levels 1-20) and Swords & Wizardry Complete (with the adventure path for levels 1-13), with the possibility, depending on the Kickstarter’s success and fan demand for a future version in 5e.

With guys like Ed Greenwood involved in this project and over 800 pages of pure game content (layout is still underway, so we don’t have the final page count yet), there’s no reason not to want it (well, yeah, it’s expensive, but see the above 800+ pages, campaign guide and complete adventure path, Ed Greenwood, stitch-bound by a printer of college textbooks for extreme durability and shelf-life, potential for use as an improvised bludgeoning weapon, etc., etc.). But we still thought maybe we could give you a few more reasons to punish your wallet and abuse your game bookshelf for ~10 lb. of pure viking gaming awesome.

So here goes….

Reason #1. The Hall of the Hearth Stone

Where the Storm River splits into two branches stands a great stone of pitted black rock that is as hard as iron yet seems to float and bob upon the waters like a giant cork. This rock is known as the Hearth Stone, for legend holds that it was the home of the first Northlanders following Swein Sigurdson, the mold and forge from which the gods made them, and the center of the Northlands. If this is true, it happened so far back in the distant past that none can truly call it naught but legend, save those who come there to call upon the gods, and the godi who have built a mighty godshouse that spans the river.

From one side of the mighty Storm River to another, a massive construction of wood, the only bridge that crosses that great river, straddles both forks of the waterway and brings pilgrims to stand directly above the Hearth Stone. A clan of godi whose ancestors spent 40 years constructing it manages this godshouse/bridge. Pilgrims are allowed entrance, provided they give an acceptable donation. Once inside, they see one of the wonders of the Northlands, for every inch of the structure is carved with depictions of the gods, as well as monsters, villains, and heroes. The entire history of the Northlands can be seen here, and as new events of import occur, they are added, even if a new room needs to be constructed. Young members of the Hearthsons clan spend the early years of their adulthood traveling the Northlands to learn of — and often participate in — important events.

The Hall of the Hearth Stone is a magnificent structure and one of the true wonders of the Northlands. It is a massive wooden bridge that rises high above and spans the waters of the Storm River where they split into two runs at the Hearth Stone itself. The huge construction allows pilgrims from either side of the river to walk across and stand directly above the sacred Hearth Stone below. Over time, additional spans have been added until the whole actually consists of four bridges that meet over the river: one from the north bank, two from the south bank, and one from the central island. The base of each bridge rises from large halls appropriately named the North Hall, the Central Hall, the South Hall, and the Auxiliary Hall. The bridge climbs steeply from the halls to a peak height of 120 feet over the center of the river. In addition to these large structures, the massive frame of the bridge itself supports eight additional halls. These are the central Hall of the Æsir directly above the Hearth Stone, the largest Hall of Memory with its radiating wings, the next-largest Hall of War, and then the smaller Hall of the Vanir, Hall of Tears, Hall of Glory, Hall of Shades, and the largely shunned Hall of the Ginnvættir.

It wouldn’t be a proper adventure path without at least part of it taking place at this sort of location…so, of course, it does. Look for your PCs to become very familiar with the ins and outs of the Hall of the Hearth Stone and the Hearth Stone itself in NS9: Daughter of Thunder and Storm, which is included in The Northlands Saga Complete.

And just for kicks, here’s the early concept art for the Hall. (scroll to bottom)

Though part of the larger Lost Lands campaign world, the Northlands Saga is also a complete campaign setting unto itself.

Am I missing any reference to a player's guide?

It seems to me this project could use one, more than any other FGG kickstarter (well except for Razor Coast, perhaps) since it's outside 'normal' or traditional fantasy assumptions.

Essentially about 2/3 of the campaign guide would qualify as player guide (maybe more if the GM didn't mind the players having historical and geographic details). Really the only part of the campaign guide that couldn't conceivably qualify as players guide would be Chapter 5: New Monsters and the Appendix with its extensive encounter tables. As such we'd be looking at something like a 100 page book to do the player's guide right and not have it feel cheap and missing necessary player info (such as races, classes, archetypes, feats, etc.). In addition, it would involve printing an additional book on a project where the book is already very expensive plus with an extremely tight production and printing schedule.

So for economic reasons, time/resource constraints, and the fact that the book already represents its own player's guide, we opted to not produce a separate player's guide.

But, that said, the first chunk of the book is a functionally a player's guide, and a very crunchy one at that, for the reason Steve mentioned above: this is outside the normal fantasy assumptions. As such, it's also outside our normal player's guide parameters and required this much more in-depth treatment for player's guide material.

Hi guys, this is something that I've been working on for the last week or so with some of the folks who didn't receive their minis order from CSM for the two Tome of Horrors Kickstarters. From talking with them, this is what we came up with that they thought would work well for them.

Since I'm sure there are some on these boards that were affected and might not have seen the discussion over at EN World, I wanted to post it here as well so they would know about it.

To the folks at Paizo: As far as I can tell, posting this does not violate any of the rules of the messageboards here since there's no flame-warring, or name-calling, or anything like that involved, but if you deem it does, please don't hesitate to take it down with our sincere apologies, because that was not our intention.

Thanks,

Greg

Frog God Games is well aware of the disappointment, frustration, and monetary loss suffered by backers of the two Centre Stage Miniatures Kickstarters, Tome of Horrors Complete and Tome of Horrors Complete II, for which we had licensed monster images to CSM. Lots of our most loyal fans bought miniatures because they have our monster books and wanted miniatures for monsters from those books. When those Kickstarters did not deliver their products we watched in dismay as backers were left with nothing to show for their support of the Kickstarter campaigns. While Frog God Games did not run the Kickstarters, have control of the manufacture or delivery of its products, nor have any affiliation with Centre Stage Miniatures beyond the licensing of our art properties for the purposes of the Kickstarters, they did involve our licensed materials, and we did publicly support the Kickstarter campaigns. Since that time we have been looking for a way to lessen the blow suffered by the backers of the campaigns in a show of good will to our fans and those who might have supported the campaigns because they saw our name associated with it.

In recent dialogue on public forums with some of the backers of these Kickstarters, it was suggested to us that maybe we could offer free pdfs from our own product catalogue to backers of those Kickstarters so they could at least have something to show for their support. This was something we had considered doing at the time when the Kickstarters first seemed to have failed in their promised delivery of miniatures. At the time we thought an offer like that might be seen as adding insult to injury for trying to somehow diminish the severity of the loss suffered by the backers or otherwise wholly inadequate and inappropriate for the occasion. However, from our recent discussions with backers, we have learned that some would be receptive to such an offer as a way to at least ease their frustration.

We’ve spent the last few days talking about the logistics of how to do this because we’re a company of part-time gamers, not very automated, and lots of backers are involved here. Unquestionably there are going to be a lot of glitches and delays as we get a handle on the process. There’s also got to be an absolute time limit on this program to not only limit the consumption of our already-limited technical resources but also to protect us from a potentially years-long process of receiving, processing, verifying, and tracking these orders—a task of no small measure for our technical limitations.

As a result of this process, for the next 6 months Frog God Games is opening the pdf catalogue of our online store at froggodgames.com and will give store credit for pdf purchases to match dollar-for-dollar the amount that a backer paid to the Tome of Horrors Complete and/or Tome of Horrors Complete II Kickstarters from Centre Stage Miniatures. Obviously there are some difficult logistics involved in this both to verify backers for the issuance of the credit and to handle the resulting online transactions. To try and create a smooth process and save the sanity of our web master and keep him from being overrun with countless details to keep track of, we will initiate the following processes:

1. If you were a backer of either the Tome of Horrors Complete or Tome of Horrors Complete II Kickstarters from Centre Stage Miniatures, please send an email to Chris at froggodgamesfreepdf@gmail.com. In the subject line of your email include the name under which you pledged to either or both Kickstarters, indicate whether it was one or both Kickstarters, and include the total amount you pledged to both of them combined (Example subject line: Joe Backer, TOH and TOH2, $375). Include in the body of the email any screenshots, emails, or other documentation you have to show your support as a backer and the amount of the Kickstarter pledges that you made. (We’re not looking for some kind of legal standard of evidence here; we just need to be able to see that you were in fact a supporter of the Kickstarters and for what amount to help us sift out any unscrupulous opportunists who were otherwise unassociated with these Kickstarters and just see this as an opportunity to take advantage of our offer for free products.)

2. Chris has prepared coupons to the froggodgames.com web store in increments of $25, $50, $100, $150, $200, $250, $300, $350, $400, $450, $500, $600, $700, $800, $900, and $1,000. He will respond to your email with one of these web store coupons in the full amount of your documented pledges, rounded up to the nearest coupon increment. For example, if you pledged $200 between the two Kickstarters, you will receive a froggodgames.com coupon in the amount of $200. However, if your pledges total $201 you will receive coupons totaling $250, so Chris will not have to worry about creating hundreds of different coupons unique to individual backers. As a small game company, that sort of thing is frankly beyond the capacity of our personnel and online resources to handle. (Please note that if your pledge total was in excess of $1,000, Chris will issue multiple coupons in increments to get you closest to your pledge rounded up.)

3. In addition to the above offer, we are aware that due to hard drive crashes, loss of email accounts, and various and sundry other reasons all backers may not have documentation of their backing of the Tome of Horrors Kickstarters or may not be able to show the amount by which they backed one or both of the Kickstarters. To reasonably account for this we make this additional offer. If you cannot show us documentation of your support of one or both of the Kickstarters, send us an email at the above address and in the subject line state your name, the name of the Kickstarter(s) you backed, and write “No Documentation” (Example subject line: Joe Computercrash, TOH and TOH2, No Documentation). There is no need to include any information in the body of the email. In these cases we will take your word for it and will issue a coupon to you in the amount of $25. We apologize for being unable to honor higher dollar values in these instances, as we will already be opening ourselves to considerable exposure to illegitimate claimants, however we will honor emails sent to us in this manner, no questions asked. Please be advised, though, we will not issue more than one of these coupons to a single individual.

4. Please be sure that the email account through which you have sent these emails is one that Chris can reply to with the attached coupons and will not be sent to a spam folder or otherwise lost. This process is already going to be putting a great deal of stress on a part-time employee, and we are not going to be able to spend additional resources in tracking down email errors and hiccups, so please help us to get these right on the first try.

Important Note 1: This offer has an absolute time limit of 6 months. After March 1, 2016, Frog God Games will no longer honor any claims for backers seeking to receive coupons. Emails from backers received on or prior to March 1, 2016 will be honored even if we are not able to issue the coupons until after that date due to any backlog in processing. Coupons issued under this offer do not expire on March 1, 2016 and will be good until their normal expiration date of September 1, 2016.

Important Note 2: Please note that the store credit coupons are for pdf purchases only. They will not work for the purchase of physical product or in combination with purchase of such products. If you wish to purchase physical products, you will need to do so as a separate transaction so that our fulfillment process will not get messed up. Thank you for your cooperation in this.

Important Note 3: This doesn’t affect any of the above but is intended as an FYI to anyone that is intending to buy a physical product as well. All purchases of a Frog God Games physical book include the pdf of that book for free as well, so don’t use your coupons to buy the pdf of a book that you were already going to buy the physical copy of anyway.

Disclaimer (because we legally have make sure this stuff is clearly stated): Frog God Games is not affiliated with Centre Stage Miniatures or any of its principles and is not serving in any agency capacity for these entities. This offer of free pdfs is not considered or intended as a release of any claims or rights enjoyed by the backers in relation to the above-mentioned Kickstarters, and the claim or use of these pdf coupons is not intended to be considered as binding to the recipient for any legal purposes. Furthermore, in creating this pdf-coupon redemption offer Frog God Games is not making any statement or claim in regards to the Kickstarters, their outcomes, their hosts, their backers, or any pending claims or legal matters in regards to the Kickstarters or related entities.
