Oh if only the release dates were reversed, and this came out ... right after the Land of Linnorm Kings... or sooner. ; )

One of the heavy hitters at Paizo made an interesting proposal on Paizochat tonight, renaming 'Kingmaker' to 'Government of Your Choicemaker.' I think that is a nice alternative.

Who agrees?

I do! :P

Dragon Age looks great, but marketing the game with a death metal soundtrack, not so good.

An actual conversion of the Magic the Gathering setting to a D&D setting could rock the house. It's a richly detailed setting and has a lot of really, really cool stuff.

I hate the game with a fiery passion, but the setting could make a fantastic D&D setting...

With a bit of sideways squinting, you could even look at the 'roles' popular with some classification schemes as being related to the colors of magic. Red is a very 'blastery' or nuker or artillery role. Blue is a 'denial' sort of role, focused on counter-spelling and nullifying and debuffing foes. White is more about buffing and healing. It's not a perfect correlation, but I think it could easily be worked up, particularly for 4E, with the White, Blue, Red, Black and Green 'summoners' each having summons and powers relevant to a specific role, more or less.

While I never cared for the card game, I enjoyed reading the magazine (no really, I read the articles, I didn't even look at the pictures, mom, I swear!) for it's world design articles.

It's easy to talk smack about Magic the Gathering (or World of Warcraft), but these venues are bursting with creativity, and have captured the imagination of an entire generation of fantasy gamers. By streamlining and unifying the principles of 'D&D,' WotC has positioned themselves to reach that potential market by making the game into something that would be far easier to 'computer-ize' or make into a MMORPG, and if they succeed, it could be a license to print money.

I'll admit, their initial stumbles in internet-content rollout to date hasn't left me holding my breath for that kind of breakthrough success, but they still have room to make it big. I may not be in love with the changes to D&D, but the changes they've made seem very well suited to online play, which does appear to be the future of the fantasy gaming market.

Set, you make some interesting points. I have played both WOW and DDO (Dungeons and Dragons Online, the Turbine version), and I actually prefer DDO if I had a choice. This is for one reason and one reason only, and this is speaking from a personal experience; the respect and civility of players have towards one another was much greater on DDO than on WOW.

Despite the wonders of online play I'm continually disgusted with the behavior of people online with these MMORPGs. Now I know of a handful of people who happen to have a wonderful group of players they meet with to play online. I consider them to be extremely fortunate.

With pen and paper RPGs, you are forced to act as a team moreso than online RPGs. There is a level of social intimacy of a group of people sitting around a table, shooting the breeze and talking about stuff both gaming and nongaming related, that CANNOT be duplicated with an online RPG. Since a person is playing with people who are perhaps hundreds or thousands of miles away, what force is in play to make them be civil to everyone else. If you have players sitting right next to you, in person, in the flesh, I think that is more of a motivating factor for people to work as a team and hash things out than sitting on a computer and dealing with people on sucn a remote level.

Sigh... But this is just my opinion.

In short (too late!), I'm going to hit the drinky-drinks! :P

Seeing these wistful and insightful posts on music, childhood, the ever increasing appeal of WOW and the decrease of interest in pen and paper RPGs by the younger crowds... IT all makes me want to drink... Lots of sweet tea vodka and lemonades... Chased with some Labatt's. Horrible!!

And who can ever forget Iron Maiden's classic- "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son!?" Especially the chorus!!

Actually, I love their song 'Phantom of the Opera.'

GreenGrunt (Pathfinder Adventure Path Charter Subscriber)

Mothership Zeta- Teeny spoilers!

I played Mothership Zeta (MZ). As for story content, its pretty weak. It turns into a combat fest as you blast your way through the ship. You have interesting allies at times, one being a precocious little girl, but the interaction with them is pretty minimal. I was pissed when I lost a few of them in a heated battle at the end of the game. Although I have to say, I enjoyed watching my samurai ally kick the crap out of some alien booty with his katana!

It wasn't great, but I still enjoyed it. I really wished Bethsaida had added some more story threads in MZ.

AND... I wish you could've recruited the samurai as a side kick, but, to quote Chris Farley from an old SNL episode- "I CAN'T SPEAK FREAKIN' JAPANESE!"

On the "I have no talent as an artist but can exploit those who do" side of things, I'm going to do a "how to do a good map turnover" seminar. Basically it's stuff you can do that'll make things easier for the developer and cartographer. Like, "if your handwriting looks like a drunken ape's scribbles, type out all names to appear on the maps, print them, cut them out, and tape them to your map so we don't have to decipher your ape-scribbles." I'm gonna have some examples of good and bad map sketch turnovers from designers, how I fixed the poorer ones, and the final result by pros such as Corey and Rob. You don't need to be an artist to do a good map turnover, just knowing a few tricks can really improve your drawn maps, whether for home use or professionally.

Croikey!! If things pan out I would love to be there... But with things the way they are, it's rather up in air, as I volunteered for some events for Josh. Either I will be blackballed! : P Or... Oh, you're definitely looking for the Wild Rose then :D

As for Seattle, Tim is dead-on about Pike's Place and the Underground Tour. If you have an extra day or two here in the Pacific Northwest, you can't leave until you've done both 9easy enough, as they're within walking distance, and all the buses around downtown are free during the day anyway). Definitely try Piroshky Piroshky if you're there for lunch, but be prepared to wait in line. If you're in more of a breakfast mood, stop by "The Crumpet Shop" for an awesome light breakfast. And don't leave without tracking down Rose's Chocolates in Post Alley or having a drink at the White Horse Pub (they're next door to each other).

If you're only going to be in the Bellevue area, then at least make time to go to Kidd Valley or Burgermaster to sample some of the area's finest hamburgers. You can also wander by the Microsoft campus to shake your fist in impotent rage. That's always fun. Or you can just get some picinic supplies together and enjoy an afternoon along one of the two breathtaking glacial lakes that sandwich Bellevue: Lake Washington and Lake Sammamish. There are some amazing hiking trails if you're willing and/or able to drive over to Cougar Mountain as well.

Thank ye lass... Alas I don't have the time to do many of the recommended activities as I'll be flying in Thurs night and then Leaving early Mon afternoon... Although, I would LOVE to go hiking.

Regardless, I'll keep the other info in mind. Thanks again.

You're misreading the description of my workshop--it refers to those who have submitted for the workshop. There's no pre-reqs for anything outside of Pathfinder Society and the only requirement for the Society is a character of appropriate level.

"A future Pathfinder Society Scenario for the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game will be decided on at PAIZOCON 2009! Soon, Paizo's Events Manager Joshua J. Frost will put out an open call for one of the fall Pathfinder Society Scenarios—a call that can only be answered by attendees at PAIZOCON 2009! All who contributed may attend this workshop where Joshua will go over why each scenario was and wasn't accepted."

Ok, this is where more communication is necessary. Are we going into attorney reading over a contract mode here?? : P

That's it, word for word, verbatim... Where does it say submitting for the workshop in the blog description?

It says "all who contributed..." Contribute and submit may mean the same thing for you, but for those who may be interested but are just getting our feet, we have no idea what this means.

So what you're saying is that one must be a contributor or one who has contributed or 'submitted' to the Pathfinder Society Scenarios in order to qualify for the workshop correct?

GreenGrunt (Pathfinder Adventure Path Charter Subscriber)

Lassiviren

Heck, even if I don't qualify I would love to sit in on the Workshops and see what the critiques are and what the Paizo staff requires for their writing projects. However, I don't think it would be fair to those that do qualify to sit in on a Workshop where there is only a limited number of seats.

If there are prereqs to being present at the Workshop, I was hoping for an early heads up to determine whether or not I should sign up for them when the time comes... That way too, I could give Timitius a more flexible schedule as to when I could run my game during the Con.

No worries Sir Jacobs, I realize it's only March and things have yet to solidify for the events and workshops.

I er...thought that there was an off chance that you guys had all the workshops mapped out as it were. : )

Hey Zux, I won't be rolling into Seattle until the 11th unfortunately, but I would like to stay at the hotel for the nights of the 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th. If you want to wait it out for somebody who's flying in on the 10th, no worries. I can understand that.

I'm a little worried about the room reservations, even though we have another month before the reservations are opened to the public, I wonder how many are available at this time. I figure the best time to get a room will be the remainder of this month and early April. So I figure if I don't get any bites for a roomie invite in the next few days I'll have to go solo.

GreenGrunt (Pathfinder Adventure Path Charter Subscriber)

Lassiviren

Hey Josh-

From reading the events listed on the Paizo Blog for PaizoCon '09, it appears that many of the workshops have a prerequisite in order to qualify for participation in them, for example, for the Pathfinder Society Workshop it appears that you must have already submitted a scenario that was rejected in order to qualify for the workshop.

For the Paizo Fiction Workshop do you have to have already submitted a work of short fiction that was rejected by the Paizo Fiction editors in order to qualify for that workshop?

It would be much appreciated if you could specify who should go or who qualifies to enter the upcoming workshops at the Con. Or, you could also specify who shouldn't be enrolling in the workshops.

Thank you very much sir! Any assistance to these inquiries would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers-
GG
