About Gilman the Dog

His parents were killed by the Sovereign Host, the ruling order on the planet, because they were rogue mages (magic users who do not join the Mage's Guild). He was raised by orcs of Argosia from the age of 7 to be mounted heavy cavalry in a mercenary company. The Sovereign Host forbids the four nations to have standing army, so the military is comprised of mercenary groups of no more than 10 persons per company. When their captain was slain after their first mission, Gilman was made captain in his stead.
