Born to a pair of moderately wealthy merchants from the town of Oregent in Andoran, Baltus and Evaine Hydarion, Geddoe grew up with his sister Estella in simple fashion. Mainly trafficking in spices and coffee, the Hydarion family saved its money as best it could to provide for their children. Working as a tableboy at the local tavern, Geddoe occasionally would see adventurers on the way towards the monster-infested Darkmoon Vale. Serving and cleaning after these men sparked an interest in the ways of the warrior in young Geddoe. Seeing his interest, his parent made a decision to invest in his future.
Saving what they could, over the years Baltus and Evaine just managed to save enough money to send their daughter to a finishing school and Geddoe, now a young man, to the prestigeous Andoren Republican Academy of Military Arts at Almas. At the Academy, Geddoe excelled in martial pursuits, proving to be an excellant swordsman. After his graduation, he was offered and accepted a commission to the 3rd Andoran Republican Army. Placed under Sword-Captain Doeric of the Greyblades (15th Regiment) as an Underlieutenant, Geddoe saw his first skirmishes on the Cheliax border. Due to Geddoe's strong views on justice moreso than law (was NG), he gained a reputation as a fair officer who understood the motivations of his men. After serving with distinction for nearly a year and a promotion to Sword-Lieutenant, destiny struck. During a border skirmish with Chelish Legionnaires from Brastlewark in the southern Aspodell mountains, Geddoe's mentor and Captain died of lingering wounds. As the senior-most ranked officer in the Regiment, Geddoe recieved a field-commission to the rank of Sword-Captain and command of the Greyblades. The 15th would serve with distinction for another 10 months before their destiny was torn asunder. During an upturn of border activity near the southernmost regions of the Andoran-Cheliax border, Geddoe found his regiment assigned to the command of one, Blade-Major Marcus Trabian of the 7th Battalion. Trabian was given orders to halt Chelish raids across the border from Ostenso. At first, Trabian was a brilliant commanding officer, displaying thoughtful tactics and savvy, he began to repel the raids and even began to push back into Chelish territory. Once matters on the Taldoran border began to wax towards a large conflict brewing (which never occured), the quartermasters had less and less to give to forward-deployed battalion's like the 7th. Quickly running short of supplies, Trabian ordered the 7th Battalion to turn to raids across the border for supplies. Preaching 'no mercy' to the Chelish, villages and towns near the border were divested of their supplies and raw materials for the Battalion. Any resistance from the townsfolk was met with brutal efficiency. Blade-Major Trabian pushed his sadism too far however. Coming upon a particularly destitute village, Trabian ordered it searched. Little to no food was found. The townsfolk were herded up at swordpoint and moved into the local Church of Gozreh. Growing angry that the town had nothing to take, Trabian told Geddoe to give the order to put the entire town to the torch. Not believing what he was hearing...Geddoe refused the order. Trabian merely gave him a level look and said to not worry, the chelish folk within the church would be set free beforehand. Agreeing in relief, Geddoe gave the order while Marcus instructed one of his bodyguards to take care of the church. As the town began to burn, Geddoe realized that the order Trabian gave was not to release the captives, but to seal them with the church! Finally realizing that Marcus Trabian had become a cold-blooded killer, Geddoe challenged him to a duel. An action forbidden to military personnel in the field. In spite of the unlawfulness of Geddoe's challenge, Trabian accepted, the Blade-Major being a skilled duelist. The duel was fierce and chilling to watch. At the midpoint, a quick lunge from Trabian took Geddoe's right eye. Managing to keep his feet, Geddoe turned the tables on Trabian, raining heavy blows upon his faltering defenses until a deep thrust pierced something vital inside of Trabian. As Trabian fell and groaned in agony, Geddoe stood back, obviously relieved for the fight to be over and ready to accept surrender. Trabian, however, was unwilling to let his pride go. Calling for a healer to administer to his wounds, once healed Trabian ordered his bodyguards to arrest Geddoe. Weak from his bleeding wounds and overpowered by the guards, he was taken captive. Upon learning of this duel, the 15th Regiment was up in arms. The same night, the Greyblades attempted a mutiny against Trabian. When their men reached Geddoe and attempted to free him, Geddoe told them to stand down and let the courts decide who was just in their actions. The 15th reluctantly agreed. Geddoe was charged with Conduct Unbefitting an Officer. Still having some small belief in the rule of law, Geddoe did not expect Trabian's resourcefulness. As Geddoe had been the one to give the order to put the village to torch, it was easy to make it seem he were the one who chose that murderous act. Quickly convicted of war crimes, Geddoe was relagated to Carpenden Prison where he served hard labor for one year. When released he had been told that someone had spoken on his behalf and gotten leniency and commutation of sentence. Once again Geddoe was a free man. One of the first things he learned upon leaving the prison was the dissolution of the Greyblades, their mutiny having been taken seriously and the unit dissolved. Knowing only military matters and the sword, Geddoe took up mercenary work for whomever would pay him. Serving in skirmishes in Osirion, Taldor, even once working for Cheliax (something he would never do again), Geddoe's skill and determination only strengthened. Unwilling to return home and face the shame his family must feel over his disgrace, Geddoe lives the life of a wandering swordsman taking coin for killing. While he prefers to avoid killing if possibly, he doesn't hesitate if blades are drawn. He also doesn't hesitate to break a contract with an employer that tries to manipulate him or harm innocent people. |
