Physical Description:
Garyn is a couple inches short of 6' tall, with shoulder length dishwater brown hair and a few days growth of beard. His face carries several old scars, and he looks at the world with a pair of hard, piercing green eyes. He carries himself with an air of confidence, and is quick to flash a cold, grim smile. His sarcastic demeanor belies a difficult life where his security often rests on an edge as sharp as the axe he carries at his side.

WILL BE MODIFIED TO FIT CAMPAIGN

Garyn was born to Wolstan Avery, a fur trapper, and Belladonna Avery, a brewmistress in the remote outpost of Woodgate, several days ride north and east of New Stetven. His family lived a simple, albeit taxing, lifestyle along with several other families. The outpost was the one of the only places within a hundred miles that trappers, hunters, and other yeomen could obtain supplies reliably. During the winter, Woodgate became all but cut off from the rest of the world.

One particularly harsh winter when Garyn was fourteen, a group of bandits, emboldened by their hunger and will to survive approached Woodgate's palisade walls. They overpowered the night guard and quickly set to slaughtering and pillaging the twenty or so permanent inhabitants of the outpost. Just as the Avery homestead was about to be overrun, Wolstan sent Garyn and his mother to their vegetable cellar to hide. The brigands kicked and the door and set upon Wolstan as his wife and only son watched through a knothole in the floor.

After the attack, the men departed, leaving Wolstan's body savaged on the floor. Belladonna bade Garyn to wait while she went to see if he was alive. As she opened the door, one of the bandits returned made to attack her. She managed to grab a kitchen knife and dispatch the man, but not before she was stabbed in the leg with a poisoned blade. Wolstan was indeed dead, and Belladonna was as good as after the poison entered her bloodstream.

In the aftermath of the attack, Garyn realized he and his mother were the only survivors. Over the course of the next several days he watched his mother succumb to the poison, slowly becoming more and more wracked with. At the end, she begged Garyn to put her out of the misery. Garyn pleaded with her, but in the end in her madness, attacked him with the same knife she . That night, for the last time in his life, Garyn wept.

He made his was to the next nearest settlement to the east, a journey of almost two weeks on foot, and just barely survived the dangerous trek using all the skills his father had taught him. During his trip he lost the ring finger on his left hand and two of his toes on his right foot to frostbite.

A cruel inkeeper took him in, and between the beatings and verbal tirades, Garyn hardened his heart as he matured and became a man. Finally, one night when he was nearing his twentieth winter he had had his fill of the abuse and beat the man to within an inch of his life and left.

Over the years Garyn has worked many jobs: guide, mercenary, hunter, outdoorsman, and even a semi-professional gambler. His mastery with a bow has gained him some level of minor fame, and his luck with cards, dice, and other games of chance has given him just as much infamy.

Now he lives from job to job, someday hoping to find the cause for the massacre at Woodgate, and exact his vengeance in blood. Until that day, he'll take what he can get.
