With loaded crossbow in hand, I head back towards the ship, but do not go back aboard, yet.
Assuming my companions are watching my movements, I gesture towards the ship, alerting them to the figure's presence.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17
Stealth: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (12) + 18 = 30
With a motion of my hand to the others to indicate my intention to spy out ahead, I creep stealthily into the tunnel, moving slowly, looking for any signs of traps or an ambush.
With a shake of my head, I follow the others towards the archway.
Perception 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
I reload my crossbow as I scan the water.
I move to the side of the ship to see if I can tell who went into the water.
Tarren the Dungeon Master wrote: Why only down to 16? I thought you took multiple hits. You know, I completely missed the last two attacks somehow being at me. I'm at -5 hp.
Just as I envision myself helping Ewald, my wounds talk better sense into me and I collapse unconscious.
Down to 16 hp here.
Can I make it over to help Ewald or are there things in the way?
I make sure I am flanking across from Liandra and then strike out at the thing, using both weapons.
Attack 1: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 8 + 2 = 15
Attack 2: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 8 + 2 = 22
Damage 1: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Damage 2: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Sneak attack 2: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 2) = 10
Concealment negation: 1d100 ⇒ 18
And for round 2...
Attack 1: 1d20 + 8 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 8 + 2 + 1 = 23
Attack 2: 1d20 + 8 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 8 + 2 + 1 = 30
Confirm Critical: 1d20 + 8 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 8 + 2 + 1 = 17
Damage 1: 1d4 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 2 + 1 = 4
Damage 2: 1d4 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 2 + 1 = 7
Critical Damage: 1d4 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 2 + 1 = 6
Sneak attack 1: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 1) = 13
Sneak attack 2: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 6) = 13
Concealment negation: 1d100 ⇒ 87
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
Spellcaster?, I think to myself and, deciding that the man is clearly up to no good, I move in, weapons at the ready, to attack.
Initiative: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
Is there another way down? If so I will take that one. If not I will follow Amanda.
Weapons in hand, I move towards the new figure on the deck, "And you are?" I ask. Is he armed?
Initiative: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19
I head quickly up on deck, but am still too slow to stop the man's retreat. I scan the deck for both enemies and another way into the hold.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
"Much as your offer sounds intriguing," I volunteer, stopping at the bottom of the plank, "Our discussions would go more smoothly if you would lay down your arms and surrender to the forces of Andoran, meaning ourselves. We promise to treat you civilly and hear out anything you have to say."
Potion 2d8 + 2 ⇒ (8, 4) + 2 = 14
Initiative: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
Gulping down the potion, I am a bit surprised as my comrades decide to attack the man from a distance. "I sense magic at work," I say quizzically as I think about the man's odd behavior, but I pause only a second and then begin running towards the ship, weapons in hand.
"I'm suprised the noise of our battle did not alert him," I say, refering to the man in the next room, "We should take care of him. I need a bit of a breather though - and maybe something to stop a bit of this bleeding."
While the others are finishing up the hobgoblins, I take a moment to examine the room, making sure there don't seem to be any hidden dangers, and then I look through the contents of the dead hobgoblins' pockets.
While Liandra fights, I'll take a moment to down a curative potion.
Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
That brings me up to 19 hp.
Galadar has a few hp left, though not many.
I move to attack again and then step back 5 feet.
Attack 1: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
Attack 2: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
damage 1: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
damage 2: 1d4 ⇒ 2
"Hey!" I shout as the attack hits me.
I retaliate with a double attack.
attack 1: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28
attack 2: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
Critical Confirmation: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
damage 1: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
damage 2: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Critical Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Drawing my kukris, I eye the two hobgoblins and then rush at the one preparing to strike, as if charging. At the last minute, I dive to the right, to tumble past him, and then back to my feet, before attacking, setting myself and Liandra up for a flank attack. The water in my boots makes me slightly less graceful than normal.
Acrobatics to tumble around and behind the hobgoblin: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17
Once in position, I hold my attack until Liandra moves in to give me a flanking bonus. Once she moves into position, if she does...
Attack: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 10 + 2 = 18
Potential Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Sneak Attack Damage: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 4) = 6
As stated before, I am heading, under the water, towards the two hobgoblins, swimming as fast as I can, untrained.
I'll dive deeper under the water (for cover) and head towards the two hobgoblins.
swim #2: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
swim #3: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17
AS I'm already in the water, I'll swim.
Initiative: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
Swim: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
"Well, at least if we die, it won't be from drowning. Salt water isn't going to do my boots any good, though."
I follow Amanda until she stops and then dive into the water in front of her.
"Maybe we should kill the big nasty thing in the water before we swim."
"Just a thought."
I cringe a bit at the thought of diving under the water. Swimming not being something I ever enjoyed doing.
I heft my blades, ready for combat, only to be momentarily distracted. When I return my eyes to the monster, I see,... its running away.
"Hrmm," I mutter as my kukri blades slide back into their sheaths. I cast my eyes over our surroundings.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14
Hopping out of the boat, I draw my kukris and move to the side, widening our front so that if the creature can make onto land, I will be able to more easily flank it.
"Spread out," I say, "don't bunch up."
Any chance of the boat drifting out? Does someone need to bull it further ashore or is there something to tie it off to?
"Pull, no the other way, row the other way!"
Profession (Sailor): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
"Is the tide low or high? Anyone familiar with the ocean at all here?"
Sailing: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
"We may have to wait out here for low-tide, in order to find the cave, though I suppose we can always swim. If we have to swim, we'll have to divy up the gear. Better to see if we can bring the boat in."
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (7) + 13 = 20
I think we are going to the first island, the one with the cave.
2nd Sailing attempt: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
As far as equipment, in the boat, I make sure to bring, from my wagon: 2 hooded lanterns, 10 flasks oil, 10' pole, 2 full waterskins, shovel, 2 50' silk ropes, and the sledge.
I thought we were waiting, but for when we do move... (assuming we can't just take 10)
Sailor: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Hopefully our other budding seaman will do a bit better so we make it out to the islands. :P
"Depends on who is doing it most likely. Though maybe its the shape that's important. Of course that might mean its a key thats required, one that just happens to be in the shape of the symbol."
"Well, I'm ready to go, but if we have to wait on Eria, I guess we have to wait. In the meantime, why don't we eat and each of us take the opportunity to rest."
Is sleep advisable? What time of the day is it?
I'm fine with just two of the potions at the moment, as I wrote earlier...
Galadar wrote: And I will take a blur potion and a cmw. I listen to any instruction regarding the boat, while others go to get the silver wire and holy symbol.
"The note also mentioned the destruction of Andoran. What with their recent attempt to annex the Baron's town and this, I think it safe to say even if Andoran is not at war with Cheliax, they are at war with us. I say we head out to the Lion at Low tide and see about this cave. That sounds like a good place to start to me."
I don't mind another extra profession. And I will take a blur potion and a cmw.
Despite my earlier words, I pay close attention to the villagers as they demonstrate the use of the boat, filing the information away.
"Undead sea turtle huh? And Cheliax, I assume, wants to use this in their war against Andoran."
"So who among us has experience with a boat? I'm a land-lover myself, barely know one end of an oar from the other."
"It sounds like this Poltur is a veritable snake. We'll have to see what they are up to out at these islands. I agree with Ewald, we need to learn about these islands. How long have the hobgoblins and Poltur been out there?"
"I suspected as much," I say with a shake of my head, as I begin to use any available ropes to tie the sleeping hobgoblins, "Remember the bear tracks around the dead hobgoblins."
"Poor guy."
I direct my words now at the villagers, "You guys owe Targas a debt of gratitude for helping us rescue you. He seems to really care."
"Anyone else want to help me make sure these guys are tied good and tight so we can question them."
"When brawn won't work, try brain," I say, to no one in particular as I contemplate the door, making sure its not trapped, as unlikely as that might be.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
Disable Device: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (8) + 18 = 26
Assuming that I spot no traps, I attempt to use a thin but stiff slip of metal (taken from my thieves tools) to reach in and lift the bar from the door long enough to open it.
Any possibility of using disable device to pop the bar off the door?
Just out of curiosity, what sort of roof does the building have?
Second Strength Check: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
edit: obviously knocking in doors is not my specialty
Strength check: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
I slam into the door somewhat tepidly.
"ooph"
On my next turn, I plan on entering into the boathouse and then moving out of the doorway, either left or right, as I take stock of the room's setup.
Is the hobgoblin still standing then? If so I attack again, this time with both of my kukris.
Kukri 1: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
Kukri 2: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
Damage 1: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Damage 2: 1d4 ⇒ 2
Sneak Attack 1: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 1) = 7
Sneak Attack 2: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 1) = 7
Sorry for the delay.
I move swiftly behind the hobgoblin, a kukri at the ready.
Attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22
damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Sneak Attack Damage: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 6) = 11
I draw my weapons, listening carefully for signs of hobgoblins, and wait for Amanda to make her approach.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
