Good example. I like people to bring pictures of their characters, and good mini-fig representations... off of that I set perception DCs for monsters. I DO-NOT like the opposed disguise/bluff check. That may be good at a dinner party, but NOT before an ambush :) The guy in the pointy hat, with staff, and mystic symbols on his robe will usually draw a lot of fire. That's one reason I used to dress up a tank just like that. I also had a character that brought a mule with him. Mounted-tied to the mule was a dummy dressed as a wizard. He drew enemy fire many times - I think he was nick-named 'pin-cusion' ALWAYS try to bring a picture of your character with you to your game/games :D
What is the make up of the party: Classes, Levels, AC's hp's ?
Would you say that they are smart players that run into a string of bad luck, or that the encounters have just been too powerful for them? If they are at a level where they are facing Dragons and Cyclops, they should have a means to escape (Dimension door, word of recall, teleport etc..). If a couple party-members escape, they can come back with help (even to the extent of dead PCs playing some of the NPC 'rescue-squad'). Pulling punches as mentioned above, is usually necessary when the DM has made an error in setting up the encounter (blatantly overpowering it). The key to a good encounter is good story writing. It's nice when the party can find clues to character-flaws that a boss-figure may have (Megalomanic, Monologer, Narcissist...). Many times a boss/sub-boss likes to leave traps, or show up for part of a fight only to exit and show up again later. The story can have scenes written where the boss is a very busy guy, so if it looks like his monsters are getting the upper hand, he'll ride off to take care of other business. But if his goons are loosing, he'll summon some more or stay for the fight. There are many plot devices that you can use. But if you feel that something like a cyclops 'crit-ability' is over-weighing the balance, then only use one cyclops, with other monsters as his back-up. An ambush of 20 Drow Ranger-archers with truestrike, is way over-powered even if the CR says it's underpowered. The mark of a good GM, is telling a good story without making things too easy or too hard, and as you know it's a bit tricky. So just write a story, where your storyline allows you to either 'pull-punches' or 'punch-harder' intelligently. Great encounters usually end with Whew and Wow :!) -Good luck Corren PS watch Dorkness Rising again lol

An Angel or Djinn with 'healing' can heal it/them-selves and or you/party-members, but since they are 'out-siders' you can't heal them...Sounds like a very bad mechanic. Just my 2 cents :D

Fun topic, I do hope that some of you will respond some 4-5 years later. Most of my favorites have already been mentioned:
Elric & Corum both greats! Of course Conan. I wish that Zelazny had written more of Dilvish the Damned. He was a lot of fun with his invisible sword and mighty 'Words of Power' that he learned from his years of banishment in Hell. Brust's Vlad Taltos was very cool too. I'd have liked to have seen more of the neat characters come back from the classic Niven and Vance stories. Espcially Vance's "Morian" which had the very first Ioun Stones, Time-Stop Spell, and so much more of what D&D was founded on :) The characters from Jack Vance's Adventure Planet, and Demon Prince stories were also a hoot. Robert Aspen also had a bunch of fun characters. :D
I understand and appreciate the idea of making it work with evolutions rather than 'skins'. "Reskinning is not allowed/limited in PFS" - I'll use that fine quote too :) Eidolon's aside, the idea of two characters occupying the same space... Is that covered at all in Pathfinder? A strong porter has a barrel strapped onto his back. Inside resides a small character.
A character is knocked unconscious, and his loyal PC rolls him in a rug, and throws him over his shoulder to bug out. They now occupy the same space so what happens when the are attacked by various things? A mighty fighter carries a halfling-sorcerer under one arm while fighting with the other.
How do these situations work? The sorcerer obivously doesn't need to make a ride check, though the fighter may need an acrobatics (say DC 10) check if he gets hit by something big, to make sure he doesn't drop his burden. A small character being transported wether in a box, trunk, or barrel via a cart or characters back (whatever) would have full cover (until it's crate was blasted away) and would be limited to casting spells that would affect just himself for the most part since he can't see anything else. Is any of that covered in PFS so that one wouldn't have to look for/towards a homebrew? What kinds of threads on this site address characters in the same space? Thanks again :D
Thanks for the Coding Odea. As for cover in general, I suppose if you had a Medium fighter in 'fat-man's' armor; you'd have plenty of room to hide a 3' gnome. That being stated, and the 'fantastical' look of our eidolon up to us; I don't know that it couldn't look like that. Someone will surely have a specific answer :P As for ride-skill, I thought of that, but he's more being 'carried' than riding...
Any spell casting is most likely to be on the Eidolon itself. I'm curious to see more evolution crop up. I do appreciate all the input. |
