The Tale of Fleaux Birchmantle
Spoiler:
Fleaux's halfing parents(from what he can recall) were residents of Korvosa, and given the second class status afforded to the small folk therin by the Chelaxians, they opted, whilst he was still a lad, to take to the road with a group of Varisian nomads, having heard that away south and west things were of brighter prospect. They were on the road to Biston and drawing nigh the forest of Ashwood, when they were set upon in sudden onslaught by Urglin raiders hidden in the eaves of the forest. The reaving humanoids slaughtered everyone to a man, including his parents whilst he, being diminutive and of no small skill of stealth escaped into the forest. For days he wandered silently in fear, and felt very much akin to a hunted rabbit, deeper and deeper into the forest till he was hopelessly lost. And, while there were forest streams and pools aplenty to quench his thirst, his hunger and weakness grew by the hour. when at last he thought he could go on no more, he stumbled into what appeared to be a camp. There were 5 puppies cavorting around the small clearing, and the sight made him laugh inwardly,it was the first time in days he felt good; all thoughts of hunger left him and immediately he began playing with them, but exhausted as he was he soon fell into a deep sleep. When he awoke he was being dragged by the collar into a hide covered leanto too weak to protest, he waited. Then nothing, as he turned onto his side to see his opponent he was shocked to see one of the largest dogs he had seen in his life. With 5 puppies nursing on her, hungry and at wit's end he joined them on an open teat. Over the next few days he regained his strength nursing with the pups on the mother dog and it was clear that, though he had lost one family he had been adopted into a new one.
One day he awoke to a startling sight, a huge human loomed over him with grim visage, dressed in a suit of hide armor with white wolf-pelt cloak, and the accoutrements of a Shoanti tribesman. Fleaux was soon to learn the man was a druid of the Shiirikki Quah tribe and as payment for his companion's(the dog's) "hospitality", he must serve the Shoanti, but took the dog's acceptance that it was the will of the tribe's totem that he was to become one with the Hawk tribe. He was to learn the ways of the Shoanti and the skills of the Druid and he learned that druids of the tribe always left and established bases for years at a time and after a time he was left as the Druid of the Ashwood while his master returned to the tribe. Two years later his master and a new young tribal druid arrived and the Shoanti informed him his debt was paid, and he was free to roam the wide world, using his voice where nature's could not speak for itself. And as a token of friendship and to cement his place in the tribe his master gave unto him a specially made (small size) magic hide shirt and then blew into a small bone device in the shape of a hawk's head, but no sound emmitted. Then with a yelp of delight a large dog bounded from the underbrush engulfing the quizzical halfling-it was one of his "brothers" all grown up into a huge specimen of Shoanti mountain dog! Handing him the silent bone whistle, his master said that this was his new companion and to go forth now as a defender of freedom and the natural world.
Fleaux then spent the next years adventuring and acting as a guide thruout the area roughly from the Ashwood in the west to the Mindspin mts in the east and from the Storval ridge in the north to the Korvosan coast in the south. He gained the nickname Birchmantle from his wolf pelt cloak the colour of a silver birch, common to the Ashwood (Although many would snicker and call him "Dirtmantle" from his annoying habit of not washing often). One day whilst travelling with his trusty riding dog Vincek (or Vince as he's fond of calling him)In the wilds north of Korvosa he met a Ranger that was an aquaintence; He was informed through the trading of news that there was a plan to clear a new trade route trough the mountains south, and knew immediatley he must join such an expedition, as he was well aware that "clearing a trade route" to the Chelaxians meant wiping out all species natural and unnatural larger than a donkey-rat!
And so we find him riding south to the fort, once again giving himself unto Nature's will.
Description: Fleaux Birchmantle appears as a diminiutive man (2'11")sitting astride a large and neatly groomed mountain dog. His brown hair seem to spill off his head in a snarled mass of dredlocks with rune carved bone and wood beads woven in haphazardly thruout. His ruddy complexion made darker by smudges of dirt and clays of different colors ranging from yellow to red to blue, he has a dirty wolf pelt cloak the colour of silver birch over a black shirt of the scales of some lizard. Various pouches, a sling and a scroll case hang at his waist finished off with grubby doeskin breeches and soft leather Shoanti boots. He holds a spear whose shaft is carved to resemble the banded leg of a bird of prey and whose gleaming tip protrudes like a talon from the end. From beneath his bushy brow peers two orbs of the purest blue that yet hold a feral and hawklike gleam within. If the casual observer is not taken aback by his appearance, they certainly are by the animal miasma that surrounds him despite the mirthful grin and prodigious laugh lines.
