A Tragic End to a Promising Beginning

The fantastic first adventure offered numerous opportunities for creative problem solving and roleplaying. Kudos to Adam Daigle. Unfortunately, this adventure shoehorns the PCs into an unjustifiably linear path and deposits them at a disappointing and anti-climactic conclusion.

**SPOILERS**

As people have previously mentioned, the shelter, winter wear, and fire's inability to protect from the killer "near freezing" weather was bad; the repeated skill checks to not fall down and get sick were far worse; but at the journey's end I learned something fascinating: the 24 mile trip to Escadar from Pier's End might actually be 550 miles!

According to the core rules, the going rate for sea passage is 1sp per mile, so it could be reasoned that 2gp and a few silver would suffice for the trip. But no! Three different entrepreneurs have staked their livelihood on charging 35gp, 35gp, and 55gp. The PCs shrewdly recognized that such exorbitant price-points could not possibly be the product of sound business practices unless this was either a conspiratorial oligopoly that had foreknowledge of the party's arrival or the 24 mile trip must somehow be a several hundred mile voyage when attempted via ship.

There was also the possibility that the trio were merely incapable of comprehending distance, much like Cooper Indians, but whatever the cause, the fee was unaffordable, forcing the PCs to sell their belongings and book passage back to Absalom for only 15gp--the end.
