Ferdin was born in a military camp, the son of a soldier and camp laundress, and spent his formative years surrounded by experts in martial weapons and armor crafting. This upbringing also brought an exposure to the teachings of Iomedae, the goddess of righteous valor, justice, and honor, who was the primary deity followed by the army during its campaigns.
When Ferdin came of age, he naturally became a member of the military, but found that dreaming of glory was one thing, but having to abide to the strictures of command was quite different. While admittedly not the best at following orders, Ferdin at least completed his obligation of enlistment, all the while being a captive listener to the tales of others who boasted of their adventures and deeds.
In the years since, Ferdin as come a long way from the wide-eyed young man eager to “fit in” with the established military way of life. Along the way, he has traveled widely, performing enough odd mercenary and guard jobs to keep his martial skills keen. He easily earns his keep in any group through tenacity and absolute fearlessness—some might say thoughtlessness—with which he flings himself into combat.
Despite his background as a fighter and wanderer, Ferdin has picked up a fair bit of education during his travels, and can even read (something his parents never learned to do). He takes a simple approach to life, and can be fiercely loyal to those few who earn his respect.

Ferdin wanders about, taking jobs where he can as mercenary, guard, city watch, etc. If there is no action after awhile he quickly gets bored, and strikes out for what seems better opportunities. Maybe he should try being an adventurer!
