Hello folks.

I hope that the trials and tribulations that life tosses your way are getting the ass whuppin' they so dearly deserve by your hands.

And speaking of ass whuppins, do you guys remember the story I told y'all about the one guys porn stash I found whilst his lovely fiance watched me during the termite inspection?

Well I spoke to her today... they did NOT get married that Sunday. Nope, when confronted he blew up at her for throwing away his stuff, and their argument escalated to him punching her in the head and calling her everything except sweetheart.

Unfortunate for him, since she not only busted his nose but had him arrested for assault.

Damn, better she learn now than after they got married.... but I'd still like to lay an ass whuppin of my own on him.

Need a dream expert.

I don't get them all the time, but every now and then I dream of gothic churches with beautiful stonework lined up in a row across campuses/blocks and buildings like schools/apartments/rectories/cemeteries/etc done up as nicely. I'm always awed when I walk or drive into these areas, though I'm often wondering where everyone parks to go to these places. They also have expansive lawns/entries to the front of the buildings.

Today's version had an abandoned/crumbling church, but with an up to date apartment/city office type building around the corner. I was trying to collect pieces of fallen/broken stained glass windows.

Not sure if I've ever seen this stuff before. I wish I could draw it out.

It's almost like a college campus made up of multiple churches/denominations along with other buildings. There are different layouts/make ups whenever I dream of them.

Not sure why I dream of this stuff, but I've always loved old buildings.

Easy. You reminisce about what Motown was ... and what Motown is turning out to become and you can't save it despite picking up the broken pieces you can.

So my kids ranked up Tuesday night in Scouts. My oldest is now a Life Scout and is well on his way to Eagle, while my youngest just made Star.

Well, work is uninteresting, as it mostly consisted of getting permissions to folders and installing applications on my new computer. I will start training in earnest tomorrow. :)

And not only jeans, but free soda!!

And I just bought my plane tickets to Paizo-con.

woot!

Forgot to mention that my daughter danced in the city parade Saturday, for an early Memorial Day. She slipped on the rain fresh pavement and scraped her knee pretty badly. She bounced right up and got back to the routine. Then finished the mile route. So proud.

Of course she was miserable afterwards, but that's OK.

I once broke my toe during a performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat but roughed it out to finish the show and do three more that weekend. Performing arts are hazardous to one's health.

Yeah... I've been hearing lately that some of the people I went to high school with are now grandparents, which is just bizarre to me. I still think of them as being too young to have kids, much less grandkids!

Every week is a busty week for me. Most of them are busy, too. :)

So I kinda hit rock bottom as a collector today. I went through every DDM gallery and couldn`t find a mini I don`t already own in significant quantity. I also did the same at Dwarvenforge.com and there is only one small set (the chasm set) that I want and it is currently out of stock. So I am literally to the point where only outside terrain remains. And I could have most of that finished (through purchase) in 6 months. I will soon be at a point in my collection where I can only collect stuff as it comes out. Sad sad days :(

There's always paper minis...

Wanders in briefly before work.

Morning folks. How's the day?

I'm counting hours 'til the evening, when I get to see The Avengers again. :)

Good morning all - I am off to work, in my role as a minion for an exceedingly evil financial institution. I wish I had a fun job... all I do is make sure the software works.....

We had a fun lunch with Mothman and family on Sunday... Mrs 8D wasn't too happy with her blue cheese and tomato soup it didn't taste as nice as she expected it to. But the roast lamb and veggies as well as Mrs Mothmans chocolate cake more than made up for it.

We used a gift card I received as an incentive at work for a nice dinner at a French restaurant. Pâté, filet of sole, and soufflé for dessert. All things I don't get to eat very often. It was nice.

Is there any other FAWTLy looking forward to the August minis release like I am?!!! I can't wait to get all those minis in my hands. Also if anyone wants to imagine what my pathfinder room looks like just imagine Scrooge McDucks vault only with minis instead of coins. :P

It's interesting. Here at work, sometimes you good folk come up in conversations. You know, stuff like "well this dude I know from the messageboards I frequent...".

And people will aske me "How can you think of people you've never met as friends?"

My usual response is a shrug of my shoulders. The way I see it, I'm not really sure I can explain it. It just is. I like you folk, and think of you as friends.

Vikingson's got a lot of good suggestions, there, although I'd hold off on logging until the ship gets into inland waters or at least close to shore, where the depth of the water is considered shallow enough to worry about grounding.

As to the anchor question, though, I think there's an initial misunderstanding of what Spanky said, along with a less than kind way of wording things, that needs to be addressed.

Spanky never said that the anchor would fall into the "cable box." What he said was that if the anchor were to "[drop] back down unexpectedly" then things would be bad. And, vikingson points out, that is quite true. A heavy anchor dropping to the bottom is going to give that cable a lot of velocity and if the person inside the box gets tangled up, he's going to be both crushed and ripped apart.

Now, as to the concept of anchor chain, it is true that ships didn't start regularly using iron chains for anchoring until World War I. However, there are references to iron anchor chains going back to the 1400s, and references to "iron cable" going back to the ancient Greeks.

These days, we require so much anchor chain (3 to 5 times the depth of the water), because it is actually the weight of the chain that holds the ship fast. The anchor's flukes dig in and help keep the chain from slipping on the bottom.

For older ships that don't have as much displacement as the huge modern vessels we have. Heck, even today, a 50-foot boat with a working weight of 1,600 pounds only needs a 23-pound anchor. A galleon, whose overall length wasn't more than 150 feet, had an anchor that typically weighed about 2,000 pounds, not 1.8 tons, although most ships had two such anchors, as well as a smaller 500-pound streaming anchor.

Obviously, your research on the weight of anchor chains for larger ships is pretty thorough, and a chain for raising the anchor would have to be strong, which usually translates to heavy. But as I mentioned earlier, you could also rely on the weight of the chain to hold the ship in place, allowing you to make the anchor lighter.

Making such a chain isn't outside the capability of Golarion's metalworkers, either. Consider that George Washington had blacksmiths produce a chain barrier that spanned the Hudson River in 1778. The 17 smiths took six weeks to make the 1700-foot chain, and each link weighed 275 pounds.

Anyway...just some additional info. Anchor chains were not at all common prior to the 19th century, but they did exist. And as such, it's not a stretch to allow them to exist in the scope of Golarion's maritime technology. It's also better on messageboards to try and be "overly polite", since direct, no-nonsense descriptions can come off as impatient or mean-spirited when a person only has your text to go by.

It was on a Windjammer;
found out about it from this book:
Windjammers: The Final Story

it's on page 35; I can't copy/paste

This is for the OP; I'm sure there's some anachronisms to it somehow, but I thought it had a really dismal vibe to it. Sorry I'm not historically and technically accurate enough for some; I'm kinda land locked and not as big a nautical expert as.....others......

I figured, though, that in a game with flying winged horses, giant people whose hips don't shatter when they run, and corpses that walk around and suck blood for some reason and turn into bats, it wouldn't really suspend disbelief too much to have a chain locker with an actual chain instead of a cable on it on a pirate ship.

Also, today is my anniversary. The missus and I have been married for 5 years now!
Sadly, we are both fighting colds at the moment, and I think Charie has caught it as well.

And, irony of ironies - my wife is the one who kind of forgot this year. I gave her gifts this morning, but she had nothing to give in return. Oh well.

Well, I have big news. I've been holding off on posting anything because this is my name and all, but I have officially resigned my current position in order to join a new company in two weeks' time.

It's been a stressful week and a half, but all in all I am pleased. I like the new position, I think I have more room to move up in the new place, and the dress code is JEANS EVERY DAY (a client's not there, anyway...).

A week and a half is a quick job search - though it's been crazy hectic.

So I wanted to post a little celebration, and I wanted to wish all my fellow FAWTLIES who are in the job market good luck in finding something fawesome!

Did your theater have the Joss Whedon brand of pretzel bites and popcorn? When did that come out? It was FAWESOME! I hope every theater has to have that all the time.

** spoiler omitted **

$5 ticket? Mine was still matinee on a Friday. I'm going to go back and see it again, but I'll watch it on 2-D instead and see if my student ID can knock it down a buck or so.

I'll go without a beverage, but I'm smuggling in food.

This coming Saturday is my anniversary. The wife and I have discussed taking off early on Friday, using the boy in daycare to our advantage, and going to see Avengers.

However, she has a big to-do here at work all week, and depending on how it goes may not be able to take off on Friday.

Needless to say, I informed her that will NOT prevent me from seeing the movie myself.

Saw the Avengers last night. It was awesome. Kidlet has been running around going 'Hulk Smash' ever since. : )
