About Eleri WarlowDescription Eleri is a middle-aged human woman of average build and slightly above-average height. Her long brown hair has begun to fade to grey and is held back in a loose bun. Slight wrinkles are in evidence between her eyebrows and at the edges of her dark brown eyes. Her formal green vest and trousers, which mark her as some sort of scholar, are at least a decade out of fashion and faded, and her white button-down blouse is somewhat wrinkled, suggesting that she either slept in it or didn't bother to hang it up nicely the last time it was washed (or both). She often seems to be off in her own world, gazing absently into the middle distance and either silently mouthing or quietly whispering something to herself. Statistics

Eleri is a former professor of a college of magic located in Silverkeep. She has a strongly independent mindset, and generally expects that people will be able to handle their own issues without significant outside help. Because of this, she was not a particularly popular professor. Eleri originally went to a college of magic for magical education reluctantly, believing that the coursework would be primarily rote memorization. Upon taking a History of Magic course about Wordcasting, she was inspired. Afterwards, she took the bare minimum of classes in order to focus on independent research into wordcasting. Eleri was later employed by the college for her knowledge in history, the planes, the arcane and general spellcrafting. The college was less enthusiastic about her wordcasting, as they considered the subject to be of little relevance to the college's mission of educating and training new spellcasters. Still, they occasionally allowed her to teach wordcasting courses. She eventually lost the professorship to a younger wizard who planned to teach courses more closely related to the goals of the college.
Goals:
Eleri wants to demonstrate the power and usefulness of wordcasting, hopefully by defeating a traditional spellcaster in an arcane duel or accomplishing something that no spellcaster is capable of. Eleri has had little success in finding material dealing with the primeval subject of wordcasting; she hopes to one day discover some ancient repository of wordcasting knowledge.
Secrets:
Eleri is aware that, given her age, raw intellect, and education, she is a relatively weak mage. She blames this on the fact that she is an almost entirely self-taught wordcaster, but privately she is beginning to doubt her own abilities and question her decision to study wordcasting. Characters:
Professor Voyle, who taught the History of Wordcasting course that inspired Eleri, remained something of a mentor to her throughout her college years. Although he initially voiced his concerns about her decision to become a wordcaster, he eventually gave her considerable academic freedom to pursue research into the Words of Power. Now long retired and a venerable old figure, Voyle may be willing to offer advice or some arcane assistance to Eleri if she needs it. Professor Bengough, the red-headed young professor who took Eleri's professorship, is a conservatively-minded mage who firmly believes that wordcasting is a frivolous exercise that lacks the refinement and wide range of applications that makes modern spellcasting useful. Eleri wishes to defeat him somehow (hopefully in a spell duel or some such), though she acknowledges that he is, at the moment, a mage whose skill far surpasses her own. If she is to ever challenge him, she will have to become stronger first. Madoc Rhydderch, a halfling who runs a mundane item shop in Silverkeep, owns an extensive private library (inherited from his bibliophilic family). He charges his customers (most of whom are mages) a tidy sum for temporary access and the right to take notes on the ancient tomes contained within. Some of his books are quite rare, books that the college couldn't get their hands on (or didn't care to hold on to). This attracted Eleri, who spent a portion of her professor's salary on searching Madoc's library, hoping to find information on wordcasting. This relationship went on for years, forging a certain mutual respect that bordered on friendship. Although Madoc has no personal power (magical or otherwise), he is a gregarious fellow with an ear to the ground, and thus can be trusted to provide information on local goings-on (though he may charge you for it). He has a habit of speaking parenthetically.
Memories, Mannerisms, Quirks:
Eleri's first encounter with the power of wordcasting came from some assigned reading in Professor Voyle's class: a copy of a rare primary document describing the usage of the 'Spark' effect word. To amuse herself, Eleri tried it out, not really expecting anything to happen. The resulting electrical blast obliterated the paper and left an impressive scorch mark on Eleri's desk, suggesting to Eleri that perhaps she had a talent for this sort of thing. Eleri often whispers things to herself absentmindedly, a habit which frustrated the students who attended her small lecture courses. Eleri is very old-school when it comes the literature search phase of research, typically packing a few day's worth of supplies and camping out in the library until she finds enough relevant material. As a result, she is quite accustomed to 'roughing it'. Eleri sneezes whenever she emerges from a dark room into the brightly-lit outdoors. She is partially convinced that she is allergic to the sun and half-jokingly vows to someday discover the wordspell that will allow her to dim the sun's light.
