3 gp + 6 sp Background Elegost Taishar was born into a martial caste family. The Taishars have served the Cheliaxian Empire for more than a dozen generations, and have been well rewarded for it. While the very lowest caste of nobility, any scion of the Taishars can be guaranteed a long career in the military, usually stationed on the frontier. For the last century or so, the Taishars typically served on the Varisian frontier, and had a large manor in Korvosa. After the death of Aroden and the rise of the diabolic aristocracy, the Taishar patriach of the time embraced the new order in Korvosa. Elegost was expected to be become a Hellknight, or to serve honorably in the Korvosan military, perhaps clearing Bloodsworn Vale, at the very least. However, Elegost was also a student of history, which led him to the family journals. By tradition, each scion of the Taishars kept a detailed journal of their adult life, and bequeathed it to the family library upon their retirement or death. Elegost couldn't reconcile the current reality of Cheliax and the diabolical pacts that kept the aristocracy in power, with the former worship of Aroden typical in the Taishar journals. This confusion led to a teenage Elegost being expelled from the Korvosan Military Academy for "unpatriotic" thoughts, and he barely had time to gather a bag before being thrown out the family manor and disowned by his father. Reasoning correctly that his former "friends" at the Academy or even his own brothers would be quick to slit his throat for his sedition if he continued to live in Korvosa, Elegost caught a merchant ship to Magnimar, and continued his study of history. When his meager coins were exhausted, Elegost signed up as a common worker on a Pathfinder expedition, and never looked back. Now years later, Elegost has honed many skills during his travels with the Pathfinders, and he ready to set out on his own. |
