Psionic Fox, your welcome to join us.

Yep, holidays were fine, went to my parents house for Christmas as usual. New Years was nice and quiet, I worked on the Legion game. Please send me an email Valegrim so I can try and resend the new combat chapter.
PsionicFox wrote: I'm not 100% sure, but are you looking for people for this still? I may very well be interested in this one... Certainly your welcome to play. Any specific Legionnaire you would be interested in playing? Lightning Lad, Matter Eater Lad and Supes are already taken.

I asked the other player to email me first and through that I seem to be able to email back to him. Lets try the same thing. Please email me first. I don't know why my account or computer is acting up but it is.
I have the revision of the combat chapter for you. Your character Lightning Lad is essentially unchanged so your fine there. The other chapters I gave you before are also still in use.
If you are interested in a martial artist for your second character, go ahead and take a close look at the Brawling and Martial Art rules in the combat chapter. That should give you an understanding how that part of the game works.

I still have all the lightening lad stuff you sent before and the previous incarnations of the rules.
I tried sending an email to the above address but for some reason it doesn't recognize it. Is the above address acurrate?

How does everyone feel about starting the game on January 4th. You will have reveived all of the relevant documents before them. If there are any questions or complications for anyone, please post or email me.
Thanks much and Merry Christmas to all.

Let me what you want to do for your first character. We talked about a few ideas. To get the game started a bit quicker I would like to see you play an established Legionnaire or if you want to do the homemade one do you think you could follow the book well enough, to create one? I'd be able to answer all your questions regarding character creation.

Doomed Hero: Superman has been sent out. I will include a few additions later this weekend. But in the meantime, its something to look over and give me some feedback on or ask any questions you might have.
Valegrim, Spike 979 and Freehold DM were either of you still interested in participating in the LSH PBP game? Doomed Hero is still on board with us. Let me know either way so I can start the game or if I need to do some more recruting. Ok?
Doomed Hero wrote: I didn't receive a followup email from you. I'm not sure why our email correspondence is so difficult.
I'm still interested, but I don't know if anyone else is still around.
Ok, perhaps I got my wires crossed. Superman will be sent out tonight. I did send out Brainaic 5 to Spike 979 but didn't hear back from him. I'll double check with the other players and see if they are still interested. Thanks for getting back be to doomed hero.
Ok, I havent heard a word from anyone so I'm assuming the game is dead.
Everyone: I'm planning on starting the game on the weekend of the 15th-16th of this month.
Spike: Bainiac 5 has been sent out. Let me know if there are any questions or concerns about the character. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about how the character sheet works.
Doomed Hero:Superman is almost done and will arrive on Monday or Tuesday. I work all weekend so I won't get the opportunity to finish him until then.
Freehold DM: Are you still interested in playing? Let me know, the next character in line to be completed is Matter-Eater Lad.
Valegrim: Are you still interested in playing? I need to know for certain which character to prepare for you if you are participating.
Doomed Hero Doomed Hero wrote: email sent Thank you, I received it.
Freehold DM & Valegrim: I will also need your email addesses in order to send characters/documents out to you.
Valegrim:Yes, I remember you character concept. What I meant by the 80's was how the Legion characters were presented in the comics during the 1980's. The adventure are still taking place in the 30th-31st century. We were talking about how the charactrers were drawn and what their personalities were like when the authors and artists did the comic in the 1980's.
Let me know tomorrow.
Valegrim: I'm still uncertain which character your playing for the first group. I'm going to be working on characters today and tomorrow.
I didn't get any feedback yet on what kind of campaign or era the Legionnaires are from...
With the exception of DM Freehold who was interested in the 1980's character versions. My guess at this point is we will be starting a new campaign all together. That is my backup plan without receiving any solid feedback from the group.

Valegrim wrote: If it is Time Trapper and a continuation of the thread I know; will just keep with Lightening Lad for continuety. Is that your preferance for a campaign? What's your second choice?

Everyone: As players are you more interested in using the Legionnaires as they were....
1. Presented in the Adventure Comic days of the 1960's.
2. Presented in the 1970's and early 80's.
3. Presented as they are in the new comics.
Let me know what you personal preferances are in order so I can work with the most popular choice. Either way we are dealing with the original Legion and not a re-boot version.
The biggest differance between one choice versus another, is that as the characters and villains age, they are better at what they do; thus there abilities are higher. There are also some significant personality changes for certain characters. A good example of this would be Shrinking Violet. The settings (such as what Legion HQ) looks different from one comic era to another, this sort of fluff would be reflective of your group choice as well. Finally, the costumes I present on the character sheets would be be based on your choice as well.
FYI: Just so you know, that the above post which discusses they type of campaign we could have...if we pick up where the previous campaign group left off, it takes place in the 1970's Legion era, not the current redition or the Adventure Comics days.
Freehold DM: I wanted to ask you for your assessment of Matter-Eater Lads personality. I'm dealing with the original Legion rather than a re-boot. I'm curious and want to compare notes.

Hello Everyone:
From what I have gathered so far, it looks like these are the starting characters for group 1.
Freehold DM: Matter-Eater Lad
Doomed Hero: Superman
Spike: Brainiac 5
Valegrim: Uncertain
I will start prepping these characters and if I get alot accomplished I hope to email them out by Friday. If I misunderstood any character interest please correct me. If you would rather have your "other Legionnaire choice" within the starting group please tell me, I want to make sure I am preparing the correct Legionnaires for the starting group.
Doomed Hero: I just want to be certain that you were interested in Superman and not Superboy? There is very little differance between the two other than in name. Superman's stats will be little higher but in the game it won't be that noticable simply because either way, he is the most powerful hero there is. Superman's age will be different as well. Both characters normally reside in the 20th century and would time travel forward to the 30th or 31st century. Either situation is acceptable for me, as the differances are very small.
Our Campaign Discussion: I'm making some mental notes on the type of campaign to play. I essentially see four choices for a campaign.
1. As one would normally expect, we start out fresh with an original/new campaign. I don't have a specific details in mind yet, but the advantage here is we start out with a fresh new story for all players. This would be a campaign design of mine (as what your probably use to).
2. We pick up where the previous campaign left off. This camapign already has some good history to it which I could pass along easily to all of you. It does present some difficulties however and they would have to be addressed.
In a nut shell, The Time Trapper then set an alternate time line in the 1990's which altered Earth's history.
Earth fell upon some very horrific times and two people arose to save the planet, Superman and Lex Luthor. Working together, they saved the world and rose to become the new leaders of Earth. Both viewed as great heroes they united the planet and were benign leaders for all. The changes in Earth's history eventually altered all forth coming centuries and eventually caught up to the 30th century.
With history having been re-written....certain Legionnaires apt to travel back into history and correct the time line. They are leaving as we speak....
Meanwhile, the time alterations has changed the 30th century as well. The Legion no longer is viewed by the public as a good organization but rather has become a group of rebels which have been outlawed. The reality is that the Legion is still good, but they must work underground to conduct their goals.
There are more details to the story of coarse, but I don't want to say too much at this time.
3. We spend the next few days posting about what kind of campaign each of us would like to see...none of which should go into a lot of detail but rather mention highlights of what you as a player would enjoy.
For example, one player may be interested in battling the Fatal Five and so they pass that along as an interest to the rest of us. Another player may be interested in some sort of intergalactic war. Anyway, you get the idea...you as a player mention what sounds "cool" and after some discussion, I'll try and work with as many of the ideas as I can yet at the same time, not reveal any real plotline to you.
4. We pick a key Legion story in the comics that is appealing and use it as a guidline for a campaign. Obviously the story changes as PCs make decisions, I incorporate new details, etc. but essentially its a remake of a great Legion tale already written. As with any camapign though its subject to change and there is no certain outcome of events.
These are just some ideas to discuss. Food for though while I prepare characters.

You also get the opportunity to use other areas of Greyhawk and explore them as well, using new threats that reside in those areas. I have thought of Perrenland; I guess I could make that most people still doesn´t know Iuz is a demigod, so I could keep the S**T WE ARE DOOMED! feeling out of the game, because, otherwise, they know they are facing the end of the world and that changes everything... I think its a good idea, is Perrenland well detailed in your campaign? How familiar are the players with it? If the area is not overly developed in your campaign, it could open up some fresh ideas for fluff and exciting places for the PCs to visit.

Dorje Sylas wrote: What is the intended purpose of your website? I'm not familiar with the term "Legion Website".
Judging form what you have up already, the title of your system is "The Legion of Super-Heroes Roleplaying Game" which is partly based on the DC Comics Universe series?
Is this site supposed to just be a home for your rules or do you want a blog/discussion/play section as well?
I will assume you have already attempted to use Google Sites? This would seem the easiest way to set different permission levels on access to different parts of your site. I've seen some very inventive work done by d20pfsrd.com on a pathfinder campaign management site which includes both character sheet hosting through Google Docs and discussion through Google Groups.
As to the protection... ya, you and the rest of the publication industry. I do not mean that in a sarcastic way. If there was a good system for both freely displaying information in an easy to access way without opening to copying... who ever came up with it could make a mint off selling it to publishers.
What you're asking for is a bit tricky. Keep in mind that a certain level you are basing your work on the work of the original authors of the Legion comics. The most important part of a copyright on a game system isn't the rules, but the meta (how to play, examples etc.) and "fluff" (the story if you will) around the rules. See Copyright Office FL-108.
I understand the wish to keep one's hard work at collating information for ending up on Wikipedia or a Wikia under some else's name. It comes down to how hard do you want to keep people from copying your collated encyclopedia (which itself I'll guess is being collected from both the comics and other fan sites), and how accessible you want it to be. There are ticks you can do with Flash, PDFs, and to a lesser extent PHP/HTML to display but not allow easy copy of text/images. Another way would be...
Thank you for the wonderful post. No, I wasn't aware of the Google free site you linked. I'm going to take a good look at it and see if I can get the hang of it.
Yes, the game is based off of the DC franchise and my intention was to have a place online to post much of the game in order for it to serve as an Encyclopedia for Legion fans in addition to being used in conjuction with the game. I'm aware of the copyright issue and at this point an interested in PBP games using the site as a "base of operations" for potential players to review things.
In the long term, should I ever consider the game marketable, I would be contacting DC comics (years from now) and inquiring with them as a result of the copyright materials. It is very unlikely that I would ever advance things far enough to reach this point though. Essemtially, I'm trying to build another Legion fan site.
I want to protect the actual rules of the game (not the Legion fluff) because they are my own creation. I think I will use you suggestion of certified mail. I have most of the core rules worked out already and could include them. Would you suggest a written copy of the rules inside the unopened certified mail package or a CD?

Valegrim wrote: Is the a Kid Flash, I dont know many DC characters; I like to play very veristile characters also as really; only villians get to specialize; heroes have to be able to take on a variety of foes. Dont know if the Green Latern corps is still around either. I know the theme of the Legion is that no one can join that has a power that is like another members power; mon-el and Superman being exceptions.
cosmic boy might be good.
I think Cosmic Boy would be an excellent choice for you. I say this for a couple of reasons. First off, he always has been the best of the Legion leaders (he was the first and raised the roster from 3 Legionnaires to 17 in a single term). Roleplaying is big with any leader type of character. Secondly, his power is versitle. Most things have metal in them and his ability to manipulate it is really just limited to your imagination. After seeing you play Lightning Lad and asking about various ways to use his power, I can easily picture you finding unique ways of using Magnetism Manipulation as well.
Magneto would be Cosmic Boy's Marvel counterpart.
I would like to hold off with the Green Lantern Corps for now and work with core Legion in order to better the basics of the game. The closest we have to a Kid Flash is XS. She is actually a member of an alternative Universe Legion (one of the Reboots which was never introduced into the original Legion). If memory serves correctly, she was a descendant of the Flash. The other members with super speed would be those similar to Superboy.
Doomed Hero wrote: Got it.
As a player I favor characters with interesting and versatile powers. Being that superman's powers are so powerful and so diverse, I'm trying to find someone who doesn't do anything even remotely close.
Anyone who I read about and think "superman could do that" I pass it up. The other thing I don't really like is when a character has a power that is all but useless against real threats, so Karate Kid and the guy who changes the color of things are out. The final thing I don't enjoy much is gender bending. I'm a guy. I play guys. I wouldn't want to play a woman for fear of it coming out stereotypical or two dimensional.
With those restrictions on my character choices there isn't a whole lot left. Any suggestions?
I would suggest Sun Boy as a possible choice. Yes, as with most Legionnaires, he has only one power; the reason I select him though is because its a power that can be used in most situations. Chameleon Boy is versitle in his power as well.

Doomed Hero wrote:
I'd love to play superman. He's such an iconic character. It will be an awesome exercise.
I have put some consideration into Nemesis Kid and I'm going to turn him down based on the complexity and potential power of the character. Being that we are play testing, I want to work first with the more popular characters in order to complete them for the game and give them a good test run. Superboy/man greatly exceeds Nemesis Kid in this area. The other concern is that not enough of the game is complete to be ready for a character as flexible as Nemesis Kid. I'm not concerned that the game system can't handle it, I just want to wait until the powers are far more developed before throwing someone like him into the mix.
You will already have Superman who is by far equal to the most powerful heroes in the game. Since each player should have 2 characters(run in separate groups) I don't want one individual dominating both groups with their characters. In the second group I would like to see one of the other players have that opportunity or at the least, everyone be on a more equal level.
In the Legion comics, Superboy/Superman was always an excellent team player. Even though he knew he was almost always the most capable, Superboy/man always respected the other Legionnaires for what they could do with lesser powers. This is apparent beginning with Adventure Comics #247 through today. Therefore, he will have a personality quality which assist him in not out doing or out shining everyone else unless it is absoultely necessary. He admires the other Legionnaires and therefore limits himself to his actions out of respect for the others. It will be this way in the game as well.
In my opinion, this is more true to both the character and how the authors wrote the stories and properly mimicking aspects like these was a primary focus in game development.
In situations of great peril, Superboy/Superman can kick it into high gear and not hold back. In order to do this however, the player will have to request to bypass the personality quality. If the Cosmos Master agrees that the situation is so dire that Supes would indeed go all out, then as a player, you are free to do so. If the situation is questionable, the Cosmos Master will require a die roll to overcome the personality quality. If the request comes at a inapporpriate time, the die roll will be refused.
It is this sense of honor and fair play that make Superman work so well with others. By that I don't just mean with the Legion but also with the Justice League and one-on-one with the Batman.
When the character is on their own, with no one else around, they are able to react fully based on his capabilities. This does not mean just flying off and saving the entire planet by himself because he can simply get there first. Rather in situations where he TRULY is alone or is facing an equal or superior opponenT, like Validus or Darkseid.
If this sort of situation is of concern let me know. The rule exists primarly because it is true to the comics; game balance secondly.
The other super-powered individuals like Supes (Mon-el, Supergirl, Ultra Boy etc.) are written in the same manner and I believe its so the author is able to include the massively powerful character within a group for the enjoyment of the readers or in this case, the enjoyment of the players of the game.
Freehold DM wrote: My email address is in my profile.
I'm very much a roleplayer, I don't really like endless combat, but I'm not afraid of claret when the situation calls for it.
My pet peeves are few but they are there, I guess in a super-hero based game it would be one character overtly trying to save another over and over again(this happened in my Marvel Super Hero games all the time), using powers to avoid combat(again, Marvel Super Heroes), and arguing over how a power "really" works(you guessed it- MSH).
You mean like Spiderman saving Mary Jane over and over again?

Doomed Hero wrote: As for my playstyle, I'm very flexible. I prefer a looser narative-style approach for Supers games but I can go with whatever the group seems to like.
My only real pet peeve is when OOC chatter clogs up the IC thread. I really like it when the IC thread reads as much like a novel as possible.
I would describe my DMing style as...presenting a scenario with multiple directions for players to follow in addition to what original ideas they choose to pursue. I can get into roll playing quite a bit as well but I know that isn't everyone's cup of tea..
Are you more action dice oriented, intereactive in roll playing or more in the middle?
As for an alternate universe Nemisis Kid, I suspect I can work with it fine, I do need to read your Wiki post through when I have more time. This character is more complicated than Superman so I will need to take more time into putting him together. We will have to go with Superman as your starting character, that will give me the time I need to do Nemesis Kid properly.

WELCOME EVERYONE
So far the line-up is...
Spike 979: Brainiac 5
Doomed Hero: Superman?
Freehold DM: Shrinking Violet and Matter-Eater Lad
At this point, my plan is to prep the characters for you and email them out next week. In addition, I plan on sending each of you the Combat Chapter because it will be what is "most different" about the game than other RPG's you have played. I'd like everyone to look over the chapter so that you get a feel for combat, what characters can do, that sort of thing.
If I get requests for more rules I can send them out, my previous experience was that it was overwhelming for players to receive it all at once. Like other games, this is a learn as you play sort of game.
I talked a little bit about play style with Spike 979 and he sounds more like a roll player and aptly chose Brainiac 5, I'm guessing Freehold DM is going to be a roll player as well, based off of our previous conversations on my Legion thread in the comics section; though correct me if I am wrong.
Doomed Hero: May I get an idea of your play style...just so I can accomidate the game accordingly. I was not able to get your email address to work wolfsong_@hotmail.com. Do you have an alternative address?

Yes, you have both Shrinking Violet and Matter-Eater Lad. Which Legionnaire would you like to have me to prep first for play?

Doomed Hero wrote:
My question is, would it be possible just to play Superman (since I am familiar with his personality more than the others of equivalent power), maybe brought to the 30th century by Brainiac to help deal with some threat?
Hi Doomed Hero, after reading your post I was some wonderful things we could work with. Yes you can play Superman, I actually like the idea a lot because we need to play-test the top-of-the-line heroes as well as others. Superboy use to be an active member in the Legion, but if your more comfortable with Superman, that is not an issue, as we both know time travel is a commonality, especially within the Legion of Super-Heroes comic book.
As for a second character, I'd like to play an alternate-dimension version of another superhero who had been captured and experimented on by Darkseid (or someone like that), brainwashed to become part of the Honor Guard and eventually rescued by the league.
I'd even be ok with playing the character as a villain for a while during an intro or early plot arc.
As for which superhero, I'm open to suggestions. I'm thinking that they have no memory of who they were originally beyond a few core notions and flashes, so they'd be a blank slate completely disassociated from the original, probably weaker due to what had been done to them, but with a few nasty "additions" courtesy of the badguy.
I can work with this concept easily as well. Having an alternate dimension version of another super-hero fine, the question will be which hero and making sure he/she fits into the Legion mythos well enough. I would greatly prefer you pick a character that has an actual power and not reliant on gadets of any kind. The question I hve though are...Who are the Honor Guard? As for a playing a short lived villain whom I assume would reform....we might be able to do something with that as well. I will need to know whom you had in mind so I can do a bit of research.
The other idea I had (which might be going overboard) was a guy who has one of each of the 9 power rings. I don't think this would make him too much more powerful than a normal Lantern, simply able to draw on multiple emotions for power sources. I'm thinking maybe he'd have a 10th ring made of crystal or something (a "balance" ring to help keep all the conflicting emotions in check?) He could be an experiment by the Guardians to see if the rings could be made to work together, or if the combined strength of the colored rings is enough to keep the influence of the Black ring in check.
I think I would like to pass on this idea for a few reasons. It isn't that I don't think the rules can handle it, it has to do more with my lack of knowledge of the Lantern mythos and conflictions within the Legion comic.
Let me know what you think of my concepts.
So all in all I think this is a great start. Get back to me on what you want to do for certain so I can do the necessary prep work for you. Please address both characters your settling on so we can go into some detail with them.

Shrinking is yours.
I don't understand what you mean by "me lad" though?
If I find out that your apprehensiveness is due to my ability to make a quality game or game mastering skills....you and Evil Eileen are no longer an item.

Just throwing it out there to see if there are enough people interested. My work on the game went much better when I was involved in a PBP game. I started one up last year and other than players shuffeling around I thought it went well. For those of you not familiar with my game concept here we are:
The premisis of the game is that each player would run a couple of characters. One character they have belongs to a small team of Legionnaires that go on a mission. The the other character they have belongs to a different team. As the plot is developed, it will in most cases connect the findings of both groups, thus they are involved in the same plot but each taking it in from a different perspective. Alternatively, they could be following different plotlines that are unrelated.
For an ongoing home campaign the original concept was for each player to have 3-4 characters and explore the plot with each group, as described above. For PBP I think 2 is plenty.
One may pick the Legionnaires of their choice and I'll step in to balance character power so that one player does not dominate the entire PBP. You may also pick a second Legionnaire.
I'm slowly working on powers as well as personality and specie qualities and would provide them as a need to have basis. The goal is for you to have fun, for me to see what works and what doesn't. You should fully expect me to alter, add or delete rules in order to improve the game system.
Major rule sections that have yet to be written (such as spaceship combat) can be worked out in a brief way in order to continue play, though the real deal would be later worked out.
Even if your not familar with the Legion of Super-Heroes comic feel free to contact me. Essentially, the Legion takes place in the 30th century where the galaxy is controlled by various organizations or species. Interstellar travel is very common. So basically, you play a superhero in the far flung future. In a way, they are similar to the Justice League but take their works in far off places of the future. The homebase is on Earth within the city of Metropolis.
If anyone is interested in playing, want's to check out some rules first, is looking for rule clairification or is just seeking general Legion knowledge please post here or send me an email at:

I'd also like to invite everyone to the Legion of Super-Heroes thread which can be found under the Comics section of this site.
