A few months ago, I teamed up with Tucker Stone from comiXology to produce a show called Advanced Common Sense. Every week Tucker runs down the most pulled comics books - the new releases, that is - based on the preferences of the users at comiXology. If you like comic books, I hope you'll check it out.

Advanced Common Sense plays on War Pig Radio.

I also post the individual episode on my website, at least until I can find a permanent home for the archives.

Twilight Sector (Atomic Array 034)

At Gen Con this Summer, we spoke with Mike Cross from Terra/Sol Games about his new Traveller setting, Twilight Sector. We asked Mike and his co-author, Matthew Hope, to give us another look under the hood of Twilight Sector.

College Degrees have Become Meaningless
Ed Healy (Contributor),

Umbragen avatar

I wouldn't say degrees are meaningless - it's certainly easier to get certain jobs when you have a piece of paper. And, of course, you can't get any job in certain industries without a degree.

The real question is whether college, as a whole, is valuable. I'd have to say yes. Sure, it can be annoying and seem like a waste of time, but the real value is not in the degree but in the relationships you make, and in the opportunities you have access to. I would never have gotten my job at Deloitte & Touche if I hadn't gone to college - and job that taught me a lot. Did I learn more in two years in a CPA firm that I did in four years at SUNY Albany? Without a doubt. I would never have landed at D&T without the piece of paper as my ticket inside.

Side point: I've long held that the accounting profession would be better served by an apprenticeship structure, as opposed to the higher-ed model it uses now. It'll never happen, sadly. They keep moving toward more college, not less.

Interestingly, not everyone wants 'a job'. If you're a serial entrepreneur, like me, degrees hold less value. If you have the drive and skill to go it alone, you really don't need college.

Microsoft Surface and D&D
Ed Healy (Contributor),

Umbragen avatar

I got to play with Surface at Gnomedex this year. It's a fun platform. One of the fun things you could do it store PC stats on chits and have blow out menus for powers. It would allow you to use some of the onscreen menu options you see in computer games during your tactical combat. Might be fun.

There are other things as well... GMs could pass items to players virtually, automatically adding them to your inventory, etc.

All they need now is a Star Wars-like way to render 3D versions of your characters 'above' the Surface. :)

Dreamscarred Press wants YOU to develop Psionics for Pathfinder RPG
Ed Healy (Contributor),

Umbragen avatar

Jeremy, I'm glad to see that Dreamscarred is tackling this. I can't think of a better group to toy with PFRPG psionics than you all.

Does balance matter?
Ed Healy (Contributor),

Umbragen avatar

The more simulationist your game, the more you'll be concerned with 'balance'. As you add more narrative elements, moving from simulation to storytelling, you'll find balance less important - and in fact, less meaningful or even desirable.

It all depends on the game you're playing, I guess.

Umbragen avatar

Miskatonic River Press has been kicking out some great Cthulhu products. Rone and I asked publisher Tom Lynch to speak with us about his latest release, Our Ladies of Sorrow, for the last episode of Atomic Array. Unlike most Cthulhu investigations, Our Ladies is more of a modern ghost story. It's a great four-part arc. I'd check it out if you're thinking about some CoC action.

Man, I really need a nap.

I asked Patrick and Alex about that, myself. Basically, they told me that they try really hard not to tell people why not to buy other games - they prefer to focus on their own. That seemed to mean, in practice, that they shied away from mentioning the OGL or any other system for that matter.

I wouldn't read too much into it, other than that the Crafty Games guys are nice and don't want to find fault with the competition.

The latest episode of Atomic Array features this game:
Geist: The Sin-Eaters (Atomic Array 027)

Nothing informs life more than the shadow of death, and there’s no better way to learn about White Wolf’s newest game than to speak with one of the creators. Matthew McFarland is a contributing writer to Geist: The Sin-Eaters, a ‘Storytelling game of Second Chances’. White Wolf gave us pre-press copies of their new game, and Matthew graciously gave us some of his time. Sadly, we ran out of time... there was a lot more ghostly goodness we never got a chance to talk about. You’ll have to buy a copy and find out for yourself!

Atomic Array is also available via RSS and iTunes.

The Jade and Hugo Solis’ new web strip!
Ed Healy (Contributor),

Umbragen avatar

The minute RPG writer Rone “The Jade” Barton saw the comic strips of Hugo “Butterfrog” Solis on the Paizo forums, he knew he wanted a to work with Hugo on a strip for Atomic Array, our biweekly gaming podcast. Hugo came on board and the two of them created Blammo’s Atomic Episodes – A new RPG-based web comic.

Atomic Array spotlights RPG games of every stripe, including our Pathfinder episode,so our mascot, Blammo, a sardonic lil mushroom cloud, saunters boldly from strip to strip, through the many specific game worlds featured on the Array.

Come check out our first efforts and let us know what you think. The guys are working to get a bunch done quickly and soon we’ll catch up to our latest episodes.

Blammo strips thus far:
Colonial Gothic from Episode One.
Reign of Discordia from Episode Two.
Prophecy from Episode Three.

Click on the strips to enlarge them, and while you’re there, go on and download an episode or two.

NOTE: You'll need to scroll down a little to see the script, and want to click the image to enlarge it.
