Due to interactions with magic items, I'd have to say that it checks caster level when the spell is cast or whenever it specifically notes to recheck it. Temporary reductions in caster level, such as negative levels, shouldn't cause everyone to have to re-calculate HD limits (though I'm sure many will disagree for one reason or another).

If a rogue uses an item of animate dead (which has a caster level) then it should use the wand's caster level to determine how many the rogue controls (I would suggest that it uses the highest current caster level, though I could see that each magic item is a separate instance of caster levels). So if a rogue casts animate dead from a CL 12 scroll, then he controls the undead as if a 12th level caster.

And you can indeed have multiple different caster levels. A cleric/wizard/theurge has 2 different caster levels, both of which are capable of supporting animate dead. This means that a wizard 7/cleric 3/theurge 10 can control 30 combined caster levels worth of undead, 32 with ioun stone, 34 with death knell, and possibly push a bit further with traits.

As to your second question, I see no reason why not. A typical sacrificial ritual in which the cleric casts death knell to boost caster level before preforming an animation is pretty standard; I think.

There is little information about it, but my explanation for why I believe the caster level is checked when you cast it is purely because animate dead has no duration. It is an Instantaneous spell, which means the magic comes and goes, and there are no lingering effects or strings beyond those specifically mentioned as part of casting the spell.

This does raise one valid point regarding the spell being instantaneous and thus the check occurs at the time of casting. It raises the argument that this spell has no daily check to maintain control for each day after it's initial casting. With that, the argument that a loss of CL after casting would essentially become unimportant, as at the time of casting, the caster met all the requirements for controlling all the undead and so continues to have the ability to do so.

Well maybe i'm just a details nitpicker, or something, but why isn't the cost of the actual SPELLBOOK itself included, IE the 15gp for a blank book? Does that cost become completely negligible once you start placing spells inside or something?

EDIT: also another nitpick i forgot to mention, do they also ignore the price of the Locks as well? I've only done the math on the first few books, but the first two books with locks (average lock = 40gp, simple lock = 20gp) are not included in their costs..

Because the price of the blank book isn't included in the pricing formula in the core rules. Which actually makes quite a bit of sense to me, as your wizard buyer in question is paying for the spells, not the paper or precautions. Since they have to copy the spells to make use of them, there's not a lot of value tied up in the physical book, unless it lets you do special things like the preparation rituals.

Basically, I'd let a person sell a spell book for the greater of the physical value or the spell value, but in my opinion, the two valuations do not stack.

It's true. As per the Rule:
PRD: Selling a Spellbook wrote:
Captured spellbooks can be sold for an amount equal to half the cost of purchasing and inscribing the spells within.

The actual physical book becomes negligible, possibly because it becomes absorbed into the cost/value of the very spells themselves.

I have a situation where an encounter has my gnome alchemist at a bridge threatened by Sahuagin in a rive the bridge spans. If I throw a fire bomb at the Sahuagin how will they be effected. The water would cancel out the fire damage by my thinking, but my DM thinks there would be concessionary damage. Anyone have any feedback on how this could be ruled? I'm not finding much to govern this.

Qadira (Pathfinder Adventure Path, Companion Subscriber)

Well, I got some great feedback on my post above, in good time too. It's as I figured though, being up to the GM. Dreamscarred looks much more profession and is more applicable to my idea of Psionics. I've not read much content regarding these other world of the Golarion system though. I've only briefly caught sight of mentioning of them someplace somewhere. Perhaps there's more to find on the Golariopedia? I'll have to look and see what I find.

3rd party material via Paizo's generous licensing.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but there is another publication that I've been shown, UMAFISHAL Psionics Update for Pathfinder RPG by tallforadwarf. Which rule set overrides? the soulknife by tallforadwarf for some reason is now given by his rule a small allotment of power points that activate certain class feature. I'm not sure where this source can be found, as the person who showed it to me doesn't recall where he got it from.

I've found only one remark HERE

As I said, just being a free action is irrelevant to this topic.

However, being that all are in agreement that a bard, specialized in such tactics, can "sing" and Inspire at the same time, I thank you all for the feedback. I'll bring this to my game and allow my player his action to cast and sing.

I never actually checked to know this, but okay, thanks for pointing this out.

Yes I'm aware of this, but I'm asking about a bard who only sings, which is why my OP mentions singing.

I wanna know if both Inspire Courage through Perform (sing) and casting Glitterdust can be done at the same time. Sure, anyone can say that he might find a way to turn a verbal component of a spell into song, but a spell is not inspirational.

My question is can a Bard cast a spell while still Inspiring Courage? Being a free action is not relevant to this question unless I'm given the rules that support the free action being relevant.

No. You missed my point. Those are fine for anyone who intends to refresh the board ever few minutes/hours/days whatever. Being subscribed to a thread means you are notified in email when a new post has been submitted to a thread you started or replied to. That's why the topic of this thread is regarding Subscribing to thread. I'm aware of the focus and the bullet and the new features. While the rules for Bardic Performance specify "A bardic performance cannot be disrupted, but it ends immediately if the bard is killed, paralyzed, stunned, knocked unconscious, or otherwise prevented from taking a free action to maintain it each round." I'm curious if he's also able to cast a spell while singing that requires a verbal spell component. Would the verbal component to casting a spell disrupt the BP if he's singing?

Is there any way to make this board slightly better by allowing anyone who replies to a thread the ability to subscribe to that thread, whether automatically through profile options or through the post composing/edit window?

I lose track of so many posts because I have no way of knowing when people reply to threads I've posted in, or just want to track out of interest, and eventually forget about them. I have to go to my profile and click "view recent posts". Sure there's the focus link, which I'm only recently aware of that is nearly invisible, but that still doesn't let me know when a new reply has been made to a thread I've replied to.

This board is hard enough to navigate as is, and I know there's not much that can be done about that, but at least knowing when a thread you've replied to has had a new reply would help that much more as it would have a link back to that thread.

Qadira (Pathfinder Adventure Path, Companion Subscriber)

I fully agree on the class feature part and unable to gain improvements until you actually have the sufficient level for that class feature.

Regarding the use of wands, that simply falls under the UMD rules, up until the paladin in the case is able to cast spells. After 4th level, he no longer needs to apply UMD rules unless using a wand with a spell outside his list. That's why UMD exists. Heck if a barbarian with UMD ranks can use it, why not a paladin? UMD allows any character the ability to use a wand or other item that applies to the UMD rules.

Just read the UMD rules and you'll know I'm right.

But you can use a magic item without UMD, but the risks involved might be great.

Qadira (Pathfinder Adventure Path, Companion Subscriber)

True, but from a pound of wood, I'm sure there's about 40 dice. possibly the same from ivory, but I don't know it's density to justify it's volume to weight. lol

B) 1sp
C) 10sp
D) 4sp

The thing with dice, is that you can make a whole mess of them from a pound of raw material. After all, when I buy a pound of dice, I'm getting over a hundred of them.

I'm just curious though what it is then that they compare with when reading the Summon Monster Spell-like ability.

Page 56 of the APG, second sentence reads,"Drawing upon this ability uses up the same power as the summoner uses to call his eidolon."

Is this only for the purpose of linking the two so to say that when one is used, the other is unavailable and nothing more? I thought it was referring to the number of times the SM ability was usable for.

technically there is no reason to ever remove it (tho it does show that you have a shiny floating thing)

Funny, I find nowhere regarding Ioun Stones that mentions skill points being assigned at its time of creation. The ioun stone merely grants a +2 to INT, which in turn grants +1 SP to the character, assuming the +2 gives the character a modifier bonus. This +1 SP is available for the character to assign as needed, not determined by the creator of the stone. The creator of the stone chose for it to boost INT, not SP.

Am I not reading something somewhere?

Just to note, for those with tight budgets. You can buy MSE, legally, at more affordable rates just by searching the internet, or if you know someone who's a teacher or student, they can get the software at these educational discounts.

Wow, if that doesn't read like an advertisement from a sock puppet, I don't know what does.

I have used TOS, and in my opinion it's overpriced for what it is. Sheets like Erian's and The Ogre Sheet are doing stellar work that's up-to-date with all the options for free. If you want to shell out money for your character generator, that's your own prerogative, but I'd rather take that money and spend it on gaming accessories that will last a whole heck of a lot longer. Honestly they're all troubling; giving full control of your character build to a program only begs for trouble (as a GM I can't count the number of times the sheets I've vetted that are electronic contain gross inaccuracies), yours included.

I don't know how boasting about a product that is well respected is being a sock puppet. You say you don't like the tone of his comment? Why should I like yours? For those who don't know value, it's understandable when they go to lesser programs. That's how I view the others. Lesser then best. I'm not saying they're bad. Each program has it's good and bad points. I'm curious to know which version of TOS you're referring to? Clearly you're biased in your opinion, because you're making sound as though these other apps you're pimping out have no bugs or issues. I guarantee they do and will, always. That the reason for new updates. Fix, and add. Do I need to go to these other apps you're pimping and quote all the bug fixes they continue to make? While putting out new added resource content?

I already had excel, so there's been no added expenditure. I also never said this was for people without excel. But there are members, who of their own accord, purchased MSE just so they can run TOS+ and have never looked back. I guess in your eyes, these people must be stupid because you're just cheep?

But I'll stop now because I'm beginning to sound like I'm attacking, when I'm not wanting too. Each of us know what we need and what we value most. If you like these progs that you seem eager to pimp out, that's fine. They are good apps. TOS+ is ten times better, but they are good none the less. There no reason for you to go out of your way to try and attack one app just because you have to pay for it. Maybe you didn't like it because it was just to advanced for you or you just didn't want to get accustomed to it? I don't know. Everyone I've known who use it never have a regret in the price they pay.

I'm still puzzled though how you know what it's like to be a sock puppet though. It sounds sick, and I'm not a perv. I suggest you refrain from insinuating as such.

You also need to remember that Monte Cook himself gave great praise of TOS as well. Can you say the same for what you're pimping?

I'm looking at Erian's right now and none of the comments display for me. I'm using MSE 2007 on Vista. So I'm left not really sure what I may be doing for some sections. Erian's sheet does not support D&D3.5. It's strictly PF, which is not wholly a bad thing. As I'm seeing it, this sheet is limited to 20 levels. Right now that's not an issue as PF has nothing above 20th or even near 20th. The file size is about 6MB, which would be a lot for people looking to share characters online. I'm looking at the base classes and I have no idea what PCCS is. I guess the comment window might tell me if I could see it. The sheets, Front and Back, etc.. in layout or portrait, are hard to look at and seem condensed or small. There's no live action functionality to it that I see, though it may be possible with some flipping through sheets. For the customize sheet, I get a runtime error 9, subscript out of range when exposing any of the customization options. Customization is limited, but available.

I'm looking at Ogre's Sheet and there's NO front/Back sheet available, just a summery output. The file size seems to be over 9MB, so sharing is less convenient than Erian's. I like the integration of alignment and deity restrictions. I like having the output of Height, Weight, and Age ranges for the selected races. Not a lot for customization, but it's available. Level cap is 20, again not an issue for PF right now. Only supports PF. I see no dynamic functionality in live game play, though it is possible with flipping through sheets.

With TOS+ the Front and Back sheets are clean and crisp. There's support for D&D3.5 and PFRPG. You can export characters in smaller, 20-50KB files for online sharing and transporting. There's a summery sheet. There's the powerfully dynamic Laptop sheet for use in live game play for fast and easy modification of a character. Supports templates for D&D3.5. Fully expanded customization of mostly everything, class, race, rules, items, feats spells... Options galore to personalize the sheet to your own preferences. Has an additional user specific table for extra user specific data that can be shared with the community. Fully integrates all stacking rules and allows the user added functionality in ability modification. And there's more...

Honestly, this little pre-comparison of the three gives me a bug to wanna get more thorough in comparing all these types of apps. I just may go and do this. Of the two, I'd say Ogre's is better, but compared to TOS+, well, TOS+ just does so much more.

This is a completely AWESOME response to that. LOL

In my years, I've been through many autogens for RPG character sheets. And I will admit, that several of them were quite nice to use, and flexible in that you weren't limited to a specific application to run it.

That said, I was always looking for a "sheet" that best suited my needs in tracking, advancing, building, and creating custom and base line characters in both classes and races. It was back in 2003 when I first found TOS, then known as the Multi-Class (or character) Sheet, it's so long ago, I forget. Of all the free gens out there, this was serious business for serious gaming.

I initially only bought the sheet for the $20 USD and forgot about the site. It was enough for me then. I floated at times between other gen, but always found myself returning to TOS.

Back in 2007, roughly four years later, I went looking for this guy, the author of TOS, and found his site. I bought his newest release of that time and man was I smacked in the face at the changes and improvements he made from the original. It didn't take me long to invest the money that made me a lifetime subscriber.

With TOS+, that's how I look at the annual fee of $20, which I'm not sure if it is that high anymore. You're investing into making your gaming life faster and easier when handling characters and implementing rules.

I consider myself a professional gamer, a serious gamer. My time is everything. The faster I can implement NPCs and PCs and even monsters, the better off I am. Templates are there. A choice of systems is there. Flexibility in manipulating currently written rules is there. The stat sheet is a great quick look at a character. The Front and Back sheets are clean, crisp, and easy to read.

I've sat at gaming groups in stores and have been able to take full advantage of live interaction with my characters with just a few quick entries, while others work things out with paper and calculator.

I have still checked in on those other "free gens' and to me, they just don't match up in performance and potential. What I'm saying is that the only thing that makes these other gens an option for anyone is the simple fact that they are free and not much more, because anyone who has used TOS+ never returns to any other app again.

It's also the amount of resource available within the forum community that just makes it all so well worth buying and renewing a subscription, and for enough of the users, buying lifetime subs and becoming contributors.

You shouldn't downplay something without knowing what it is you're downplaying. For a serious gamer, Player and GM alike, TOS+ is The Only Sheet you'll ever need.

What would be real nice is if there were some way to preview what's inside so we know what we're considering buying. Once we have it in hand, and we find it's not what we want, we're tuck with it. At a store a consumer first has the ability to open a book and skim through it before buying it to make sure it's what the buyer really wants, or needs. I know it's not a complicated thing to do as I see other sites offer PDF previews of their products, DriveThruRPG comes to mind as just one of them. Cold-buying a product puts a lot of trust in the buyer to the merchant believing that what's contained will be something the buyer wants.

While I've purchased many Pathfinder products from Paizo and have only had a couple disappointments, I would have no disappointments had I first had a preview of that product.

Really, this is not hard to do, nor complicated to do. For the money Paizo makes, I'm sure they can add this one simple feature.

This is a great tool for tracking a campaign's treasure, and the report output works well for both PHPBB PbP and for just a straight forward print out of what's found and what's been shared. I use it for all of my games and it makes it much easier for the players to maintain records of treasures found in the past, or when investigating a crime scene, a handy tool for collecting evidence.

Great Job Ritz

If you migrated it to OO it would work on Mac/Windows etc.

The last version of Excel at home I used was 4.3 (circa 1998) and then briefly Office 2000 at work until we switched to OpenOffice.

So I don't have access to Excel, and I suspect the vast majority of people don't have access to it.

TOS+ uses vba and macro that is not supported in Open Office. Also, Open Office does not support password protection, which would allow anyone to modify and take credit for all the work done by RiTz21. It's not likely that TOS+ will ever be made compatible to open office.

I've tried everything and TOS is the way to go. It runs smoothly and works like a charm at the gaming table. I was really resistive to having my laptop at the game, but after trying it for two sessions, I don't think I'd ever go back to paper only.

If you haven't tried TOS, give the demo a try. It takes a little while to figure out how the worksheets interact, but be patient. It's easy to add custom items, classes, skills, feats, anything really. It helps if you have a little experience with spreadsheets, but with the help of the wiki and faq, you'll figure it out quickly enough.

TOS+ does indeed have some of a learning curve, but there are tutorials available to help understand the basics of how it works.

I've been using TOS+ since it's release as 2.0 and even TOS (now known as TOS FREE) since near it's first public debut. The power that this spreadsheet gives the user is massive. It's flexibility is impressive. The support available through both the tutorials and forum community cannot be beat. With TOS+ now also following the Pathfinder Role Playing Game, it will only grow to be an even better tool not only in character generation, but in maintaining the character as well. To me it's most powerful feature is the LapTop worksheet that allows you to show real-time live changes to a character after the effect of a haste spell, fatigue, bull's strength, barbarian's rage, and all the time never letting you worry if you forgot a bonus/penalty somewhere or messed up on the math.

Bugs are quickly fixed once found, if not found during the beta process, and the new release to these fixes is quick to be made public. In my days I've tried several Character Gen tools, in both excel and other formats. None of them accomplish the support and efficient implementation of the rules, and support more than one Rule System, as well as TOS+

Is this for both books? My invoice says the 24th of Aug. I only ordered the rules & not the Bestiary.

According to my account on Amazon, The Core Rulebook has an expected delivery date of Sept 9th. When I called them, the person on the line said, without doubt, that they were given a release date of Sept 2nd and that that is still on track. The Bestiary shows a delivery date of Oct 14th, I believe. No matter though. As long as my copy is still part of the first print release, and I get it in great condition, I'll be pleased. Yes, for USD $8.49, I did buy the PDF, though Paizo.com kept crashing that day. LOL Couldn't handle the traffic I guess. :-))

I assure you we have not placed any restrictions on Amazon. We sell our books to a distributor, who in turn sells to bookstores, which includes Amazon.

We place no special restrictions on Amazon compared to any other retailer. The book trade DOES tend to shift all release dates to the next Wednesday (making the release of the Core Rulebook 8/19). Any change of the release date after that is purely Amazon's responsibility.

This is kind of what I thought. I was figuring that Paizo may have put a shipping restriction to prevent early distribution, but to have to wait until Sept 9th, well, I waiting this long, what's a little longer, right. I'm hearing from several people the book is very well designed. I can't wait to get my copy.

I know for a while most chains weren't allowed to release the books until 2 weeks after because they had too much of a tendency to shipping/releasing early.

Yep.

Thanks guys for your responses. I know on my end this will be a long few weeks of waiting that much longer.

Still comparing spells.

This rule is part of the Polymorph subschool now (pg. 211)

Thanks.

Now I just need to know about this,

Animal Growth, RPG240/Beta198 give the target as one animal, but 3.5 PHB198 gives one animal per two CLs. Was this intentional?

Did I miss a rule somewhere on this too, or was this a deliberate change?

Also, I'm finding some spells where the duration has changed. Again I'll point to the Alter Self spell referenced above. It goes from 10 minutes per level in D&D3.5 to 1 minute per level in Beta and still in RPG.

Alter Self, RPG240/Beta198, RPG and Beta drop the comment of the spell granting the +10 to disguise skill.

Nyambe stuff

I hope this helps. One or two of the paizo staff have mentioned these are good stuff. I suppose it depends on how much african style adventuring you do.

Cheers

Yes, it took a lot of searching on amazon, but I did find this source and will have it soon in my D20 collection.

This is not the first time I've seen a creature reference to a source that is uncommon and not likely to be had by all by a Pathfinder Adventure Module. Why would anyone even think of doing this? How do I find these stats? I've never in all my years of gaming even heard of a Nyambe Game system. All my searching on the internet has come up empty. In fact, it's likely that I should just right the creature out of the adventure completely and put something a smart author should have put there in the first place because I'm not counting on anyone else having access to this information as well.

I call complete and utter BS on this. Not only did a search for Nyambe in Google put the site of the publisher (Atlas Games, for the curious) as the top choice, but a search of the Paizo store produces these results.

This is an example, one of many, of Paizo utilising the benefit of the OGL to get good, appropriate material without having to develop it all in-house. If they include the stats as anything other than a wandering monster, they'd provide the full stats. But a wandering monster table? Why not open those out a bit? DMs who don't have Nyambe can easily substitute something else appropriate (although maybe a core suggestion wouldn't go amiss when using OGL material)

Unfortunately you replied as I was deleting my post. Yes, I did finally find Nyambe. My claim is correct though that this is a highly uncommon game, completely non-existent in my area.

If I subscribe, is there a way to only get the PDF? I've already preordered the printed copies from amazon.com at a price I couldn't turn down.

I was using TOS for quite a long time years ago and that was great to use. I fell out of play for a long while, but found time to get back into gaming. I went hunting down My TOS copy (Years pass and computers change) and opened it to create a character. I saw the update button and clicked it to see what updates there were.

Holy cow! Not only did I buy TOS+, but I'm now effectively near having a life subscription on the forums there. What is it Richard, 2022 that my sub ends? I don't mind contributing to a project that just keeps improving and evolving.

When Richard took on the task of developing and deploying TOS+ 2.00 (now 2.02) as a means of incorporating Pathfinders Rule Set I had no doubt Richard was going the right direction. I think Pathfinder has definitely taken D&D the direction another company should have gone and with TOS+ following the same thinking, I can only see good things ahead for both.

Richard, I've been actively using pat's DM Spreadsheet for the Rise of the Runelords: Burnt Offerings PbP on your forum and have had no problem at all with it. All you do is download the DM Sheet (free) and load each character to it and you have everything right there for fast and easy reference.

It's awesome.

I've been looking at the experience chart; slow, medium, fast. Is there a formula to this? How does someone calculate for 21st level in each group? Has this been discussed before and I'm just not finding it in my searches?

OGL has nothing to do with the PDF being free currently. The PDF being free right now is due to the open beta that Paizo is conducting to improve the rules. Once the Open Beta is finished the final product will be available for a set price determined by Paizo, currently listed at 49.99 or so.

OGL or Open Gaming License is a legal document designed by Wizards of the Coast allowing game manufacturers to produce products that can be used with or are compatible to Dungeons and Dragons 3rd Edition. It does not make a product free unless the publisher chooses to make it free, which is what Paizo has done with the Beta Test version of Pathfinder.

Well, I don't know about anyone else, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the final release scheduled in August '09 will end up LESS than $49.99. Like most, I'm on a monthly budget. As much as I would like to have a hard copy, I would have to wait and search Amazon for cheaper new-used copies whenever they may come available. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but I'm not going to hold my breath. :P

Oh, okay. For as of now, Pathfinder is only handling the Core set, but the added supplements all still mesh in. This is what I'm liking about Pathfinder more and more. All my investment in books is still worthy. Thanks for the reply...

Great little construction system. Thanks for the reference.

I updated my sheet to Beta, but I just don't have the time to make it calculate things automatically, neither to try and copy them from earlier sheet with Jason's friends additions... Still, I don't have anything against it if someone wants to make my Beta sheet automatic. If Jason's friend would do it, I could share that one too =). Thanks!

Oh. My bad. It was an earlier sheet they modified. I must have lost track as I read.

I know I mentioned it elsewhere, so I thought I'd let you know. My group really likes your sheet and one of my players (who does the Adobe thing for a living) modified your sheet (this past week in fact) to make it savable, added a bunch of drop-down boxes, made it so everything adds up automatically, and a bunch of other things that look really cool. If you want a copy of the modified sheet, please let me know. I can be reached at: jaye dot sonia at gmail dot com.

Cool! I've meant to make the sheet calculate everything, but just haven't found time for it... Can you ask him if he's interested in making same thing for my Beta sheet once it's up? =)

I'm reading through the Beta Playtest softcover and I love what has been done. I'm wondering though of two classes.

Will the Barbarian have totems again or is that what the Rage Powers replace?

Some Bloodlines for the Sorcerer come from beings of long life. Does this long life confer to the Sorcerer at all? Maybe, "Your grandfather's grandfather was the son of Mariam Baspartis who claimed the father was a dragon seducer in human form." Dragons have long life. Couldn't a trace of that trickle down the bloodline. "Because of this, you will age more slowly than other humans and possibly live for hundreds of years. It's hard to say since no documentation of such offspring exists." It could be the a bloodline like draconic or celestial or undead add 50%, 100%, 200% to this character's lifetime.

Just thinking out loud.
