I'm utterly amazed by all the Lawful Stupid behavior that has been used as examples...seriously I've played Pally's and played in games with Pally's not all were great but some of the "logic" here is dubious at best.

(Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, Adventure Path, Campaign Setting, Companion Subscriber)

Guess it Depends which Shanara books you are talking about ...Walker Boh is not a mundane... they all had a Legacy of power which sets them apart from commoner folk..and Legolas may be supporting but he and Robin Hood are two of the most common archetypes for the heroic archer... I myself might add Hiawatha and William Tell to the list but not most people.

My point stands...Heroic types are what MOST wanna play, I've played a carpenter and had fun, but no more fun than I did with my Ranger or Cleric or whatever.

You may wish to play Ted the farmer or Joanne the Midwife or whomever but in my 28 years of gaming experience most of my players enjoy a character that is beyond the mundane because they exist in the world of the mundane every day.

IMHO its far easier to down grade a character if you wish to play Farmer Ted but its nearly impossible for a player to have the epic hero with a 15 or 20 point buy but I argue that Ted the Farmer can have good stats as well and still be Ted Triumphant if you roll your stats instead

(Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, Adventure Path, Campaign Setting, Companion Subscriber)

Just another batch of reasons why we ROLL(4d6 Drop One Die Roll Seven Stats and Drop One Arrange as wanted)in our games and I've yet to build a PFS character even though I've got the card... With Rolled you might get the stats you need for your character concept. I have no objection to point build based games...I love GURPS...I consider it the best overall system but its also very intensive. It helps for everyone to be pretty familiar with the creation system.

We, meaning my group, has 8 Players spread over 2 evenings with two campaigns and several overlapping players, we stick with Point Buy character for Point Based games and roll stats for games that aren't based on a point system. Original D&D didn't have a point buy system that I recall. It offered several rolling options but like the OP we've never had much issue with game balance or much in the way of dice envy beyond the passing comment. I've found its easy to compensate for a tougher party with very little if any change in balance.

Good stats seem to make happier players honestly, playing that farmer can be fun but somehow Alanon, Conan, Legolas, Aragorn, Fiddler, and One-Eye seem to be more popular as heroic archetypes than Ted the farmer. Now I'm not disparaging Ted nor am I saying Ted can't be one heck of a hero, but they don't make that many epic stories about Ted the farmer and his mighty Hoe of Weeding.

(Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, Adventure Path, Campaign Setting, Companion Subscriber)

GURPS is superior to all these systems...that said it requires lots of work to bring a campaign to fruition but the work is usually worth it when all comes together.

The 3.5 MIC is the 2nd most used book in our game library... So used we have 2 copies of it and the most used book... the Spell Compendium. I heartily agree that a comprehensive series of Tables for the generation of equipment and loot would be an invaluable asset to our group and to virtually any group.

We certainly would love to see additional mundane gear and vehicles as well and perhaps a good system for designing mundane equipment/weapons and vehicles. Good rules for vehicles in combat would be a plus.

Wouldn't object to strong hold rules as well and perhaps detailed list of hirelings and henchmen to populate said stronghold, maybe include some expanded cohorts list to ice the cake so to speak... Though this last topic may be easy to handle in a smaller form instead of adding it to a book about equipment...

The Mask of Command by Sir John Keegan... Keegan is one of the worlds formost Military Historians and has a chair at Sandhurst, the British Military Academy. The Book itself is an in depth analysis of commanders and their style of leadershipfrom Alexander the Great to the Modern Post Nuclear Commander. Its a fantastic book filled with gems and wisdom from some of the greatest military minds of the ages.

Still rolling stats with our groups, We don't beleive in misguided concepts of equality. All people might be equal under the law but some are smarter, quicker, faster, smoother etc... People may not like to hear that but it happens to be more realistic and despite it being fantasy we tend towards grittier stuff.

Well I say buy a PDF reader from a company smart enough to include A pdf READER WITHOUT A DOWNLOAD...i love my Kindle DX, as a matter of fact I'm using it now...And I had an IPAD but it fell quickly into disuse bc it doesn't do half what I wanted it for without a hassle. The IPAD is good for some things but as a GM carrying all my stuff in one place, My DX gives me the ultimate in convenience without playing the Steve Jobs shuffle... lol... When he said flash was dead, I almost spit out my drink, Adobe is 90% of the Web. Wishful thinking or pure stupidity. The only IPAD has going for it it the plentiful Aps...which is starting to happen with the Kindle now as well. Also the instant USB compatibility is awesome. In 10 minutes I had my entire PFRPG library on my Kindle.

Apply the appropriate protection spell if the Summoner is good/evil. The Eidolon should be unable to attack those protected by the appropos Pro Vs Alignment Spell. We houseruled that the Eidolon shares the summoners alignment.... Protection Vs good/evil has a caveat that should help that I don't beleive was prohibited under the Summoner rules. Read the spell... the 3rd use of the Spell prevents summoned creatures from attacking characters so warded. This last for the duration or until said warded creature/character attacks teh summoned beastie. Of course this is trumped by a Nuetral Summoner summoning the opposed alignments or nuetral creatures. Also, a bad guy with levitate or fly trumps it anyway... just to name a couple of possibilities.

I learned that a history degree is less important than a re-enactors opinion because despite the the years of schooling, the traveling to sites and the questioning of experts, a weekend warrior who can spell sensei knows more than all the rest of us combined because he can use the word Nihonto...never mind that the conversation was addressed to laymen

Since all people are not creattd equally I assume the same for PC's WE never use point buy it is far more unrealistic (lol) than the reality of life, some people ARE stronger, faster and smarter than others. The point buy system seems to be the neo-socialist answer to equality in gaming. I think the idea of the game is to play HEROIC characters, and though the occasional heroic character in literature has a physical flaw far and away the majority have personality flaws, and even those are absent in some of the more popular stories from which the genre was born. I fully support the Rolling method over the point buy because it has a chance to create the epic hero of story and legend while leaving room for the normal to rise above his ability and become the hero as well. The point buy leaves you with pigeon holed characters in traditional rolls. Almost every fighter has an 8 CHA, almost every Wiz/Sorc has an 8 STR, etc... One word for this...BORING... I quite enjoy my absurd 6'6" Wiz with the 17 Str, and I know one of my players loves his Ftr with the 16 INT and 14 CHA... imagine that... a FTR that can lead troops...who'd have thought of that.. honestly the drive for character balance is silly, people are not equal except in the eyes of the law and the opportunities available... and those are subjectto debate as well.

Speaking of flawed arguments...

No one is saying, "Never heal in combat!". What we're saying is that, mathematically, you should reserve healing in combat for times when it's the best option, which is generally either when the entire party is hurt and you have an effective AOE heal or when one character is near death.

You rolled a 1 on your check to communicate effectively and wound up arguing with a bunch of people who don't disagree with you. Nice job.
No, I think you rolled the 1 on your Reading Comprehension check. Nice job being a jerk about it, though.
When 5 people get the same impression from a post I think it's pretty clear you didn't communicate what you meant in an effective way. As for being a jerk... you seem to have that under control.

Neither are correct.

Nor are oversimplification of another's beliefs simply because it is not yours. Sure there are some conservatives who do in fact want to use government power in that way. It does not mean all of them do. Or even a majority do. That is the 20 second sound bite coming from the media because it sells. Same with how some "progressives" want to change things to fit their beliefs. It does not mean they all feel this way.

IDK maybe it is just me, but making things their lowest common denominator should be left in "professional" wrestling. It just does not seem to fit anywhere else.

The reality these days with both parties seems to be which parts of the bill of rights they wanna ignore, the left (extremists) hates free speech and gun rights and the right (extremists) seem to hate our rights to privacy and to some extent freedom of religion... The far fringe of both groups have lost touch with the constitution... You know its bad when Congressman say thing like I don't care what the constitution says, this is the right thing to do... Now correct mer if I'm wrong but that statement is a violation of their oath of office, ANYONE, on either side with that attitude must be impeached. As long as we ignore the blatant and criminal misbehavior of some of our government officials things will never work the way the founding fathers planned it. Of course the original concept of our government and its checks and balances we're supposed to curtail this it seems to have hiccuped of late.

The idealogues and politicians have forgotten the key thing in all this, They are supposed to represent the people, not their philosophies, parties or special interests. The first and primary responsibility of our government is to uphold the constitution and for the last 30 years both sides have peeled away some of our basic liberties. We need a better way to vet the people who serve us and harsher and more drastic punishments for those that ignore the oath they took to the constitution and their fiduciary responsibility as elected officials. Also perhaps we need more stringent restrictions on who can vote in this country, perhaps requiring a HS diploma or GED, perhaps an IQ test, perhaps some form of Civil/Military or Community service... I don't have all the answers but I can clearly see some of the problems. I'm sure I'm gonna get flamed for this but its time we realize that its the Constitution that most perfect of imperfect documants that is the canvas with which our country has been drawn.

Anytime the target is denied his dex, for instance being flat-footed, they are subject to sneak attacks. I'm not sure why they chose 30' as the arbitrary distance but thats the SRD, I'm a little more open minded since I've seen a sniper in action but when someone is unaware of an attack they are very vulnerable.

As a GM I have a cpl of players who sometimes find themselves daunted by the volume of others (I'm the loud obnoxious one myself) I have instituted the old grade school tradition of handraising, and to squelch the arguments I have the handraisers take center stage and shush the others to give them an opportunity to talk. The first couple of times resulted in a moment of embarrasment but after that it has mostly gone smoothly. I would attempt to bring this option to the attention of your GM.... also another option is to gain an ally of one of the louder players and get their attention directed toward your idea and use their volume to advocate your ideas.

I'm certainly aware of Gearge RR Martin but I haven't read any of his books. This sounds very cool though. I liked Rome a lot and really like True Blood. I was/am also a big fan of Showtime's The Tudors, so having this series on a network like HBO should be excellent.

Two questions:

Not being at all familiar with the books, could they be considered "adult" content? I ask because most of the big HBO and Showtime series (The Tudors, Rome, True Blood etc) have plenty of sex, blood, violence etc. Will this Game of Thrones contain a similar level of such things or are we looking more at a PG13 Lord of the Rings level of content?

Also, being a big fan of The Tudors, I have really come to like Tamzin Merchant. I thought she did a GREAT job as Katherine Howard and was looking forward to seeing her in this. Has there been any word yet why she was recast?

Yes, there is adult content but not on the scale of Rome or Deadwood, except of course the violence level...can't wait to see the Red Wedding, sex is not as prevelant as it was in either of those shows but an incestual relatiionship is one of the keystones to one of the main story arcs.

I believe that prohibition is doing more harm than drugs, but the principal of self ownership is much more important to me than the pragmatic debate.

It's your game, you should do what you/the players want. But how do you say "dice rolls randomly determine what our characters will be like" and then say "no one is forced to play the dumb ugly fighter"? Those seem to contradict - what happens when your players roll:

STR 17
DEX 8
CON 12
INT 6
WIS 5
CHR 7

?

Ah but I never said I forced them to roll 3d6 and keep that order did I, we allow 4d6 drop the low and arrange to please, we also allow a drop stat so 7 rolls, so no we've never ended up with a character with that kind of stats

WE should ALL be able to be proud of our heritage regardless but the fact that bigotry and racism are confused for each other has drawn so many lines in this country that until we can stop worrying about this stuff, its the baiters on both sides that keep the debate alive and this subject is no different, Spider Man is a white kid, Black Falcon is a Black Hero, as is Powerman, the 2nd Green Lantern, Cyborg, the Panther etc... lets stick to the way things are and not dredge up a racial debate over a comic character. Not to mention if we really want a debate... Its pretty simple to run those numbers and see that they can really level things out for dealing with a powerful group. I still get the occasional character death and thrilling encounters, it simply requires a bit of number crunching.

Also the occasional one use Item...like a Potion to Buff the BBG can go a long way to Help, Say... Shield of Faith or a Stat Buff... also without giving the party too much loot if they pull off a quick kill, don't wanna go all Monty Haul on them.

Sadly, perhaps the best thing for us to do is put pressure on China and force them deal with the lunatic.

Same way ALL piercing weapons work - find the gap.

A piercing weapon with leverage is pretty effective: a pick, or something like a lucerne hammer. Rapiers, lacking leverage to push the pointy end, aren't really effective against plate armor. Which is why plate-armored knights didn't run around with rapiers.

But this is D&D, not reality.

Agreed, the fulcrum force of a Pick or Lucern Hammer was great for punching plate, that Rapier was best aimed at the throat, joints or eyes where the armoring had to be lighter and more flexible for mobility, essentially it would require more skill and precision (or luck) for the rapier armed fellow to take down the plated knight. The fellow with the spike just need to land a solid blow and lots PSI do the heavy lifting
