Description:

The first impression an observer gets of Draelen is a tall, impressively muscled warrior. Upon closer examination, the broad, flat nose, long incisors and sloped forehead make it obvious that orc blood is responsible for his brawn. He carries an assortment of weapons, a cruel assortment of spikes protrude from a long polearm he carries and a large axe is slung over his back. His armor is similarly covered in spikes, although they are carefully arranged about his tabard so as not to obscure the symbols there. Anyone familiar with heraldry will recognize the emblem of King Surtova on his left breast and that of Silverhall on his right. His gear is in fine working condition and well oiled and polished.

A large pure-white canine trots at his heels. At first, the sight of the beast raises any civilized beings hackles as a wild wolf, but a second glance reveals features only found in domesticated dogs.

The intimidating impression is broken the instant that a smile breaks Draelen’s face. The large toothy grin that splits his craggy demeanor has a way of dispelling tension and he has a surprisingly soft, though forceful voice. He has a way of making people trust him as an honest man doing his trade (although that trade is war), the same way that they trust a blacksmith or farmer.

Background:

As with many of those of orcish blood, Draelen’s story begins with a tale of love gone awry. Draelen’s mother, Aliandrith, was part of a minor noble family in Silverhall with a keen appreciation of nature. She loved frequenting the woods and dreaded the day she would marry and be forced to spend most of her life in domestic duties. As happenstance would have it, at the peak of her rebellious teenage years, she encountered a satyr, Lenish, at one of her favorite spots in the wood. They struck up a sort of romance between them, Aliandrith dreaming of the possibilty of a lover who could provide an escape from the confined life that awaited her. But eventually her sense of duty to her family prevailed and she realized that she must end her relationship with Lenish. The satyr, overcome with rage, swore that she would rue her next lover and beg for him back. Lenish used his magical pipes and knowledge of the forest’s denizens to arrange a tryst between her and a warrior of the orc tribe that inhabited the woods. Much to his delight, the magically charmed dalliance produced a child. Aliandrith hid her pregnancy, faking illness for the last few months of her term and instructing her maids to do away with the child when it was born. However, looking into the eyes of the child, her maid could not bring herself to kill the child and instead took it to an old huntsman in the stables. He was a widower whose wife had died before bearing him any children.

Borne was the man’s name and he raised Draelen as his own son, despite his obvious mixed heritage. Borne worked to maintain both the lord’s stables and kennels and he hoped that Draelen would follow in his footsteps. However, something about the fey magic that had influenced his conception made domesticated animals skittish around him, so Draelen was relegated to minor chores and it seemed he would never aspire to train animals as Borne desired. However, he discovered that there was one breed of animals that did not shun him, the great half-wolf breed that was a specialty of Silverhall. Enthralled by his chance to live up to Borne’s expectations for him, Draelen poured his childhood into the breeding and training of these fierce canines, finding a sort of kinship in their mixed blood and barely contained wild instincts.

As he reached his teenage years, his orcish blood became more prominent and he suffered scorn and derision from the other youths of his age. The worst offenders were the knights in training, those boys of noble blood that were destined to join the Order of the Lion, seen as the shining warriors of the town. Yet not all of the boys in the town disliked Draelen, he had a magnetism to him and many of the sons of common folk that had grown up with rallied to his defense against the arrogant nobles. The brawls escalated over time and culminated in a confrontation that left many of the noble sons with broken bones and may have gone further if it had not been broken up.

Seeing that the current situation was untenable to endure for long, but knowing that if he exiled Draelen, the common folk would likely make more trouble, the lord struck upon an innovative idea: he named Draelen as a trainee to the Order of the Lion. The Order grudgingly accepted, but refused to give a horse to the fey-touched half-orc. Draelen instead formed an even closer bond with his wolfdog, Ivory (so named for her pure white coloring). The solution worked, the common folk felt like they had a new hero in Draelen, while the nobles were satisfied to know that Draelen would never become a true knight. Even Draelen felt a sense of gratitude to his lord for the opportunity and swore the oath of allegiance to him gladly.

When the charter seeking explorers of the Greenbelt reached Silverhall, the Order was loath to send anyone south with tensions high along the Issian border. Draelen was the obvious choice to dispatch, as it would help put memories that embarrassing event behind them. Although he felt betrayed by the officers of the Order, Draelen’s faith to his lord was strong and he travelled south to Restov to pursue his future.
