I have wanted such a book for years!

5/5

Thanks for putting out this volume! I see it as a perfect bridge to help people make the leap between an introductory product like the Pathfinder Beginner Box to the Core Rulebook. In my experience if the first introduction to the game is an hour or more process of building a character then that process can turn people off to the experience. That’s where I like to use pre-generated characters such as those in the Pathfinder Beginner Box.

However, once a player gets a taste of the game they will want to create a character that suits their particular interests. However giving them a blank character sheet and a giant rule book can be intimidating. That is where this book really shines. I love the character themes and quiz as a way to provide new players with concepts for characters that would not have occurred to them if one just described the core character classes. Furthermore, the concise initial build out steps for each class and the level progression steps are extremely helpful, particularly for the console gamers of today that are used to finding character build out references on the web.

I also particularly like the “Playing the Game” section. For the first time in my experience this gives new players a better chance of what to expect out of the game. Previously only sections like the example of play found in the Core Rulebook were available and those tend to focus on combat. This section’s descriptions of the modes of play did an excellent job of describing different aspects of the game and the kinds of actions a character can take which previously one would only begin to understand after many sessions playing.

I wish something like this would have first come out in the early 80’s when I first started playing RPGs and there was much hysteria over the concept in the media.
