I went the way Cranewings suggested and knocked it outta the park. Great offense and defense.

Maybe this is a little late (or a lot), but I ended up building a Phalanx soldier (Favored of Athena) and focused a lot on shield and spear. For the sword, I went with a Falchion or some other sword my DM recommended as archetypal of Hoplites. Remember, Achilles was a Myrmidon, sort of like a storm trooper Hoplite. It would work to your advantage to play the Hoplite card because of shield bonuses.
"They say your mother was an immortal goddess; they say you can't be killed";
"I wouldn't be bothering with the shield then would I?"

My character dishes out mucho damage and is an excellent party defender (he guards the keg.....ahem); my son even says "he's way OP", but that's the way I designed him to be as historical as possible.

I have been playing a Phalanx Fighter in a campaign. He is actually a Greek Hoplite.
He's 6th level now and I really like the damage that I can get out of his Spear Power Attack/Furious Focus. The Shield Bash is sweet too.
I would like to get the benefits of Shield Focus to cover my allies a little but still be devastating with that Dory (Greek Spear).
Any suggestions?

Hi guys,

I have one question,concerning Shield Ally(Ex),ability that Phalanx soldier gets on lvl 9 and after it is improving on 13th and 17th lvl.It say on 9th lvl he can provide partial cover(+2ac,+1ref) to himself and all adjacent allies.And on 13th lvl he can provide cover(+4ac,+2ref) to one adjacent ally until end of his turn.I see in some other posts there are similar opinions as my...there is no sense at all that he can provide it to adjacent ally and that he cant provide to himself..no logic in that at all.Or i missunderstood and he can actually provide it to himself?

Thanks in advance!!

Hey! I also recently started a Phalanx fighter class but quickly realized his limitations. I went with the Hvy. Shield and a spear and focused on the 2 weapon proficiency using the shield as my second weapon (shield bash, slam, etc.).
With lots of help from my DM, I managed to squeeze the most from my character to make him truly impressive.
Yeah, but seriously, ditch the tower shield and go for Hvy so that you can gain offense and do some damage.
Good luck!!
