Just a few pages, James, just a few more pages......or a Trait Rule Supplement... or..ahhh, I guess you'll find a way. Seriously, Traits are really a good addition. Especially if there would be something that would go in the direction of "Childhood Traits". For the last couple of years we have used something named "Childhood Skills" and "Childhood Feats" in my Campaign as house rules. The reason for this was that feats and Skills for beginning Classes are always selected with the Class in mind (or future Prestige Classes), never for giving color to a character. I always missed that none of the available Skills and Feats (and allowed Points for skills and feats)never allowed for any childhood experience. Thus we decided to give 2 more Skillpoints (must be placed in ONE Skill) and one additional Feat to beginning Characters. Only rule here: The chosen Skill and Feat should be chosen without the Character Class in mind, i.e the skill and feat chosen should not be a class skill for the chosen class. (For Example: Hide or run would be allowed as Childhood-skill/feat for a Wizard but not for a Rogue and should fit into the characters background history. The fledgling wizard needed to hide from his peers due to his affinity to "weird" magic or his mates would have ridiculed him or even gave him a beating when the villages price cow did not give any more milk). Of course Rogues and Bards had a hard time designing or choosing a childhood skill, since their list of class skills covers almost the whole list. And almost always people tried to circumvent the "no immediate use to Beginners Class" Rule. Exceptions to that rule have only been made when a Player came up with a really good background story which gave a perfect AND genial reason as to why that "prohibited" skill/feat should be allowed. (Sometimes they tended to give me lots of beer or stronger drink before popping the question....eventually I noticed their intend, so nowadays I refuse Character Creation Discussions during and immediately after parties. And unfortunately that decreased the "free drink for George" orders in our local bar..... Devlin 'Dusk' Valerian wrote: I personally don' t care if PF will be more backward compatible or less. Pathfinder is closer to my liking. 1st:4E allows me less use of my already bought and owned 3.5 books than Pathfinder does. Is there something about 3.5 that makes it simply not an option at all, but that Pathfinder fixes? Hi Mage, The choice for me was not 4E or PFRPG, but between 4E, 3.5 and PFRPG. As I have mentioned, I don`t have enough time on my hands to write my own Adventures, Campaigns or Worlds. I neither have the time, or are willing to invest hours in order to convert material from other publishers who's products don't meet my standart. This is mostly due to the reason of having to spend time to earn enough dough to keep the fridge filled, the rent and gas bills paid etc. (Well, I also need money to give it to my favorite RPG-designers and retailers in exchange for their products). Thus I rather invest the remaining free hours into friends, family and in playing or DMing. Since I am as lazy as I have just described, I heavily depend on published material such as Modules and supplements. Of course, these have to fit into the rules system. with 3.5 not being published any more by WoC, I assume that any supplementing products will sooner or later become less and less available for purchase (please note that I am talking about quality material that does not need much overhaul work; best would be none). So my dilemma will be/is that my supply of good material will sooner or later be unavailable. Most players and me as DM are addicted to new rule supplements, Campaign books and guides, and if we / I cant purchase them to use with my campaign, we/I will become bored and .... Well I guess you can see where that leads to. I need a RPG that keeps supplementing my ongoing games. That not going to be 3.5 anymore (I am not really that fond of any of the D20 products out there, except the Sanctuary (Thieves World) Stuff, and I really don't care to start any totally new game system. In my opinion 4E is more a new system than PF, and PF will probably allow me to keep the use of my already owned 3.5 books, whereas that is not the case with 4E or any other new game. But what really helped me in the decision to go along with PF is that the Golarion Campaign Setting and the AP is just great stuff of almost perfect quality. With that Paizo seems to be THE company that comes closest to my need of material which will be published on a regular basis, thus keeping me happy and further in need to work more hours in order to spent money which will keep other in work which again..... oh, here I drift again.... ;)) In short: by going with the PF RPG I will have my steady supply of NEW addictive material. Material that allows the use of old books and lets me play a game that is closer to 3.5 than others. Without the fear of running out of supplies in the near future. And that the PF Beta seems to be a good game system is of course the cream on my cake. firbolg wrote: What I've noticed in Pathfinder is less of an emphasis on Tolkienesque fantasy, and more elements from pulp fantasy/scifi. If anything, Golarion is closer in feel to old school Greyhawk then FR. There's also no focus of high profile NPCs, which I found became a detriment to FR as time went on. It has the same kitchen sink ethos as FR, but the sources used a far broader and help make the setting it's own beast. TRUE, TRUE, TRUE... can't agree more. I always loved Greyhawk, it had grit. I only liked the FR (2nd and 3rd Ed., but the grit was gone..4E FR....well, I better not dwell into that; some like it a lot, some don't and I keep missing Greyhawk (now more than ever...but Golarion makes me (almost) forget greyhawk, save for quite a few memories. And thats the point, In all my almost 30 years of roleplaying, the FR never gave me any fond memories save "the times of trouble". And that part did not leave a really strong impression. PFs Golarion is more promising, well defined, not overdone by "famous" NPCs and it brings back the gritty feeling. Also with FR and even Greyhawk it seemed one knows it all. Nothing NEW, only slightly different. With Golarion there is new excitement...something new around each corner, for GM and Player alike. This might only be true for the moment and might change when all has been explored. But till then...a lot of water will go down ANY RIVER....and if PAIZO keeps up the work, something new and exciting will always show up, at least for the next decade or such. Shroomy wrote:
I will try to be fair: Nope, usually German translations are good, if not excellent...., that is, taking into account one is not used to the original English text. My problem (and i guess its the same with others who are fluent with the English language to enjoy any book in its "non-translated version") is that by comparing the original with the translation (no matter what language) one finds the translation lacking. The reason for this is simple. Some words, phrases or names (to name only a few examples) don't translate very well into another language. As an Example: tasslehoff burrfoot from the Dragonlace Novels sound s like a fun character. The name implies a lot of different characteristics (Burr = Rose i. e. thorny, stings, or even sticks to one/something just like a burr...and that in connection with hiss feet...well, the name is hilarious) Translated into German, one does not get all those different meanings...the translator has to decide on one "aspect".... and that will sound stupid...something late "Rosefoot", or Thornyfeet, Stickfoot.... well, I guess you'll get my meaning. Thus the translator decided to give old Tass a new name, one that is more fitting with the German language, like Tolpan BarfuĂź (BarfuĂź meaning barefoot, where as Tolpan does not have an actual meaning but the name implies that the owner of that name might be clumsy or or a klutz in certain ways. So, while the "New-German-Name" for this, our favorite Kender implies something in regards to the character which its original name does not (to a non-english-speaking-audience) the German name turned out to become the object of ridicule to those of us (including me) who had a fairly decent grip of english. Also, certain puns, or the use of the english language does not make sense when translated word for word. Translations are done for those who need them, and not all can be translated to keep it exactly as in the original, quite often a translator has to improvise to keep the story smooth. But yes, there are really bad translations. A torch has been translated to "flashlight", or "cutting torch" (such done with the translation of the AD&D 2nd Edition (if I remember correctly), which does not make sense in any fantasy setting.....and shows the use of either a bad translation program or an overpaid, no use for nothing translator. But that was more than 20 years ago, RPGs have been a new market here in the Old World, no bigger company had the guts or the vision to jump on the wagon......and the company who has been responsible was really small.... and did not pay that well.... me remembers.... yep, the good old times... I kind of miss them.... Today, translations are something else. Translators usually are roleplayers themselves, thus knowing what they translate. Companies that take on a project are experienced in the genre, and know
As someone mentioned "German RPGs" as DSA (Das Schwarze Auge) as being called " a bad game" or "stupid game", which it ain't nowadays, or never was (taking in account my above words), keep in mind that people who did not like it, usually come from a stock whose first experience was D&D or AD&D. Compared then, it did seem ridiculous or bad, (taking for example that a plastic mask was supplied with the "game masters box" (rumors even suggested that there was a mask consisting made out of chocolate in a few limited edition boxes.....this has not been proven to me so far), the published adventures have not been that good a quality in regards of writing style and/or storyline, compared with AD&D mods(neither are older AD&D mods from the early 1980s compared with "Paizos Own" for example, at least in my view. Also (and here I finally end my drivel), keep in mind that the "original" will always be "felt" as the better thing, the second or third sequel of a movie usually not be counted as good as the first one (i.e. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, The Conan TV Series compared with the Schwarzenegger Movies, Dragonlace Chronicles with any of the following books, Hersheys and other chocolate brands, George Washington and George W., San Diego Padres and ....nope, I better stop here, The Padres Rule.... well as least in my opinion...and they will win the world series.....soon). END OF slipslop...........till the next threat....I Hope I am still not placed into the jerk file. Although....its getting close...ouch....ok...I'll be quiet....mercy.... I personally don' t care if PF will be more backward compatible or less. For me the reason for welcoming PF-RPG is pretty simple. I Don't like the way the evolution from 3.5 to 4E has been done. Its a totally different style of game that I am playing/ are used to. Pathfinder is closer to my liking. 1st:4E allows me less use of my already bought and owned 3.5 books than Pathfinder does. So by going with the PF Rules, I feel can still use my old books (with a few simple changes in the rules/stats). 2nd: As I like to keep any of my future campaigns to be as close to 3.5, and not being willing/able to invest time to constantly write my own adventures/campaigns (after all, I have a 40 to 50 hour week of regular work to do in order to make money to pay for my bills,), I rather opt for any good game of any Company who will keep supplying me with written and published adventures/campaigns. So far, that is only being done by Paizo with Pathfinder. Taking into account that almost no other company of quality will keep publishing any adventures for 3.5 (or 3.x) longer than for (estimated)18 month, (by End of next year, I don think most will be going with 4E ), it seems that Paizo is the only one to fit into the gap. Thus allowing me to keep playing my kind of game for many more years. Going with the PF-RPG Rules is only a small price to play (and not a bad one at that). And as has been mentioned by some of the above contributors: ignore those rules that you don't like and use those you like. Anyway, I have not stumbled upon any game in the last 30 years that did not make me change one or the other rule or even ignore some of the rules. So far any RPG that I have played had to be complimented by our own house rules, and I don't think that will change in the future. Only difference between 4E and PF; 4E needs to be changed a lot where as PF might only be needed to be changed a little; 4E adventures need a big overhaul to be played with 3.x rules, PF based adventures none or just a little. I have always enjoyed reading novels that have been related to my favorite PGs, such as the Gord the Rogue books by Gary and other Greayhawk based books (not enough have been published that play on Greyhawk, at least for my taste and appetite), the Forgotten Realms novels and the Warhammer Fantasy books. Reading these let me dwell in my favorite worlds outside of our ongoing campaigns and even let me "borrow" a few ideas for my own campaign or let me introduce the one or other cool NPC/famous resident to my players. I have been wondering how many of you would enjoy/be interested in Pathfinder/Golarion based novels. Should the be stand alone books, trilogies, or a longer ongoing line of books? Should the stories play in the resent past, so that they do not interfere with any ongoing APs, or in Golarions present, future/alternate future or even on another world? What about the main character/s? The PF-Iconics, Eando Kline? Who is your choice of author? Would you buy them one by one, or would you subscribe? What do you think are that chances that Paizo will publish some in the future? Guennarr wrote:

Hi Allison, Unfortunately I will have to disagree with you. After reading this Thread I checked into both, my Gods and Magic Book as well as the first three SD Books. The Gods and Magic does not show any problems, but AP 14 and 15 seem to show the same signs at exactly the same spot. The top of the Binding between page 14 and 15 is perfect, but going farther down, the binding is not as tight as on the top. This might suggest that there really might be an issue with the binding. So you might want to check if this problem occurs more often. Please note, that since I am aware of the problem, I will just place the books in my collection and leave them there, so they will stay whole. For gaming purposes I just make use of the PDF. Thus sending me a new one will definitely not be necessary. Oh, by the way: Thanks again for your help yesterday and for your really fast E-Mail response to my query regarding the combining of shipments and all the other stuff that I kept you occupied with. I really appreciate the help and perfect service. So now its back to browsing, tea, cough medicine and more reading on your site. True, in every other encounter, either a PC or a NPC of some kind will take to the air. And its also true that minis tend to fall of bottles, Dice, or what ever you might think of to simulate flight. Not that often, and if it does, the scene usually lasts only for a few rounds. I for my part don't think that I need that many of those combat tiers that justifies an investment of 50$. But its not so much the price in comparison with how often I have need to use the tiers. What really made up my decision not to buy them is that one already has to struggle in order to pack up alle the gear that is needed to play: Tons of books, a case of minis, CDs for background music, scripts, charts, pencils, markers, paper, Combat maps, tiles, Critical Hit and Fumble decks, magic Item Cards along with snacks and drinks. I would go along for one or two small tiers, big enough for a single medium sized mini, but thats all. Xaaon of Xen'Drik wrote:

Yep, before any one asks, thats sanctuary as in Robert L. Asprin's and Synn Abbey's Sanctuary/Thieves world, like the Novels by the same name. The Box had rules for the City for some of the (then) major RPGs like D&D, AD&D, Chivalry & Sorcery, Runequest, Dragonquest, Tunnels and Trolls (that was a weird one), and even Traveller. Other spells also are far above the 1GP Price (which can be ignored with the correct feat). All in all, I myself don't see a reason why one makes this cost-thing a subject. I have been playing AD&D for a couple of decades, and never has the cost of Spellbooks or minor Components been an issue. Especially when I announced to them that I will keep playing 3.5, but wanted to switch to the Golarion Campaign Setting (living greyhawk being dropped and the FR having undergone a change that did not fit my campaign, but still wanting to play in a setting that offered lots of fresh material in regards to modules and supplements (I am rather lazy in regards to designing things (other than adventures) myself; or rather not having enough time for this due to the reason that I have a full time job to attend to). They have been easy enough in regards to changing the Campaign setting, but when I announced to them a few weeks later that I also opted to change the system, well that was hell in my home. They thought that they had to leave their beloved D&D behind. But after explaining that this was still D&D, just not 3.5 (or 4E) but more like 3.7, they have been willing to give it a try. I have never anticipated that all of my gamers would switch, and only 2/3 did it. The other third did accept our decision and and said good by (much to my regret). They joned the campaign of a friend, and all seemed to be happy. I gave my remaining players my spare print copy of the Pathfinder rules as well as the address where they could download the Beta Rules. Two weeks later I started the Curse of the Crimson Throne Campaign /adapted to the Pathfinder RPG, and everyone liked it. Unfortunately for me, those that have been unwilling to move along and thus left our group, plus a few other players from their new group called me to express their wish to participate. This left me with more people wanting to join the Pathfinder RPG than I had seats. I do not think that this is the result of my "great ability" in GMing. It rather is the result of my people having had the chance to check out the Beta Rules and comparing them with their preferred Game System, be it 3.5 or 4E. Just let your players check the rules and let them decide (maybe after "forcing" them to a trial session). I am willing to almost guarantee that they will go along afterwards. Hi there all, I have been going over the feats that have been posted on Nov. 10th, and while we have ha no chance to cooperate them into our ongoing campaign, I do have a few thoughts: Disruptive (Combat) I do like the thought, but I don't think this is one that I would allow in my game. The saving throw DCs is high enough for someone to either resist an effect or cancel it. Any further bonuses to a spell DC seems to leave spellcasters behind. Spellcasters themselfs do not have a save against a wielded weapon, thus leaving them in a vulnerable situation during combat rounds. Master Craftsman: I would say no to this one also. where the hell is a non-spell user, attempting to make a magic weapon or Armor getting the magical energy from to produce such an Item. Again, this takes away the special ability of a spell user that only he/she has. (or one of his sources of income). This unbalances the game in favor of non-spell users. Even if only slightly. Sickening Critical: OK, I can accept this one. Even if only hesitantly. Being sickened is already a drawback and my incapacitate foes and friends alike. There should at least be a fortitude save against that effect. As a general thought, I think there are already enough feats for the warrior caste. I would love to see a few additions for spellcasters or rogues. (these being the younger members of our Group) and the other half want to stay with 3.5 (these being the old timers). It was the Masters Choice to stick with 3.5 (after all, I cant DM a Game wich I cant approve). Since we now play in the Pathfinder Setting, I hope to convince my people to change the system from D&D to Pathfinder. If I will succeed.....guess we will have to wait and see.
