Oh I like the idea of Ranerius embracing her.

The circumstances in which it takes place will make for a fantastic drama.

Whether you prefer to play her with True Love OR a disgust of Ranerous I think should wait until the Embrace to be finalized.

Venice by Night - Friday - April 4, 1309

The Business of Michael Santos - (NPCs) Lydia, Onfroi, Xing Shi & Andrew the Hardy

Ranerius' power works once more, You see Santos through the eyes of this victim. "I am sorry my friend, they melted your brain. I do not know what horrors you witnessed, but rest now knowing that the Long Night is over while mine is only beginning". Around his neck are shiny beads that glisten red. This victim turns to the left and can see a few others laying in their gondolas as well.

Lorenzo cannot activate the power of the spirit's touch, or perhaps his analytical mind shuts him out of the realm of the supernatural at this very moment. Based on his long research of the dead, even prior to entry into the Long Night, Lorenzo concludes that the decomposition on all bodies is approximately 3 days old. It is the same rate for each of these victims, a dozen in all.

Geoffroi does not need to be a combat medic to see what has transpired, throats ripped out, almost no blood in any gondola. They were all murdered by Cainites.

That sounds interesting. I might take a stab at it :)

OK. The group will start in Ustalav, by May I'll know whether I have a full table or I need any more players. Thanks Pat.

Bummer Jack but sometimes its for the best, I ended up delaying graduate work for a year after I finished my undergrad back in the day.

Sorry for the delay, just bought a house and I've been buried with a ton to do on that.

Justin opens another door. This one holds an ordinary-looking man. He is dressed much like Mr Swire, in a shapeless tunic and pants. He begins to babble in a Cager-accented Planar Common

“Oh thank you sir! Thank you!”

He looks to be in better condition than most others, in fact he is rather well-fed and looks as if he lives a soft life. His hair, though mussed, is cut expertly, and his skin is smooth and scar free

Food poisoning this week and so much work I am up to my eyeballs.

HOWEVER.

I was thinking about this OOC thread the other day. I remember back in 2016, 2017, hell even 2018 many of us just having crap years and hoping that next year would be better. Then 2020 came and it was like, hmmm, those prior years weren't so bad now were they! That being said, I have to confess, my life is great. My kid is growing up and so far she sems pretty well adjusted despite having divorced parents, new wife is my favorite person in the whole world, my son who was supposed to be born with a birth defect was perfectly healthy, I (think) we are closing in on a new home in a few weeks, my business grows every year... this is the first year I can look back and say, this year really is better than last year. I hope that has been the case for all of you as well!

Glad this game is still going on and we can share the journey of life apart, but, still together.

A bit farther along on Strange Aeons Book II than Carrion Crown Book II, mainly because I am trying to do my best to replace even some of the mundane NPCs with Ravenloft NPCs and place both adventures within Ravenloft.

I do not think I will run any FULL Ravenloft modules but I will use some chapters from some modules to blend into the story and fit in the cracks between both.

The nice thing about trying to blend both is that I can eliminate some of the more random encounters and make most encounters faced applicable to the plot.

I was hoping to be a further along this week but the last two days were a bit of a mess so I will need to use all my free time tomorrow to prep for my table top game of Vampire this Friday instead of tinkering with this project :-(

OK, I think I'm done with the initial conversion on Book 1 of both APs. I will try and go through Book 2 for each AP within the next two weeks or so. Assuming I can get through a book a week, that puts me on pace to get things going in late February early March.

Once we get closer to that timetable I'll issue the character creation rules and we can see if I get all 5 of you or if I need to recruit to complete the group!

Michele and I live in the same town, in fact in a few months I'll be moving even closer to him within the same town, as in he can walk to my house on table top Vampire night close. We're in Essex County in NJ.

Pat and I actually met once in person in NYC when he was visiting and I still worked there pre pandemic. He's a good guy and he runs pretty awesome PbPs here on the boards. Though he does suffer from a lack of time the same way I do these days.

Not sure where the other PCs live (though now we know where you are Alessandro!), I think a while back I had asked in the OOC thread but I don't recall any longer.

FYI, I am working till I run table top Vampire tonight, I will have a robust update tomorrow evening I/C.

I have started reviewing the first two books of each AP for modifications and selecting some Ravenloft modules to insert into the AP, even if only some chapters of said modules.

If this plays out as I envision it, there may be some chance of moving into Mythic, but that's a while away.

I am considering utilizing a modified version of Automatic Bonus Progression. I will absolutely be utilizing a modified version of Weapons of Legacy. I will also be selecting bloodlines for each PC to tie you to the story more deeply, I will not reveal the nature of those bloodlines as they will be revealed as the story unfolds. At certain levels, each PC will receive abilities related to their bloodlines.

I am seeing this as a 5 PC game, hopefully all of the Shackled City PCs and our DM will be able to participate, if not, I will seek out one or two more PCs to fill in those gaps.

Funny, I was looking at Carrion Crown after I posted yesterday!

If everyone is on board with that idea, I would absolutely run it. Though I will need a few months to get it together as I need to read (and in some instances re read) some of the items and we are trying to close on a house so it's going to be hectic until early 2024.

I think the starting point would be a core world, what one matters little to me, Golarion, Oerth, Faerun, Krynn, (though I don't think Athas makes sense I am fine with that if that's what the PCs want) whichever you all like. Of course, you could all also be from different worlds as well.

PF1, I do not own, nor will I ever own PF2. Not because I have any feeling one way or another towards the system, but because I have invested quite a great deal of resources into D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder 1E and I no longer have any desire to spend serious resources on a new rules set of any kind.

My last big purchase was on the old Kult books from the 90s (expensive because they are all out of print) and I have yet to read any of them because of the sudden turn my life took a few years back.

That said, I would probably not be running anything released in the last several years. I own a few of the APs Rise of the Runelords, Strange Aeons, Skull and Shackles, Savage Tide (3.5), Curse of the Crimson Throne, and a few more I cannot remember offhand. I own Age of Worms but I've already run and finished that for table top a while back so I wouldn't be interested in doing that again.

Another idea I started, but was never able to finish (among many ideas that were ongoing PbP projects that blew up several years ago due to again, RL circumstances) as I lost all of the players was a Ravenloft campaign that brought the PCs through the various realms from level 1 through high level where those who survived would finally escape.

Oh man, I had a PC with that Fell Animate spell, it was pretty cool. I had the PCs world hop in the Age of Worms game I ran because I expanded the scope and they ended up in Dark Sun. The Wizard PC was Lawful Evil so he took advantage of being a Defiler for a day and he dropped a Fell Fireball on Pirates chasing the group on the Silt Sea. Half the crew died, then rose and attacked the other half of the crew, the PC boated away as I described the horror of that scene, it as pretty damn neat. Sometimes I miss running D&D but I just don't have the bandwith to run it these days.

This audit has been open since 2018. I believe that is the third or fourth largest tax savings I have ever provided to a client (though most of the time I get clients No Changes so technically there is "nothing" to save). The largest, I'll never duplicate again, $15,000,000. That shit was crazy.

Zhang Jim:
Originally a part of the Shanghai Chantry formed by a Tremere whose identity is unknown. The Chantry was destroyed in the ongoing Shadow War of the region as your Sire Artemis Gauthier (a Tremere of the line of LeDuc, supposedly one of the first Tremere) was on the wrong side of a feud at the time. Unfortunately, you did not understand much of the structure of the Kuei-jin society so it was and still is unclear to you, why that happened.

Your wanderings led you to explore mainly the Blood Courts of Beijing though you would on occasion return to the Flesh Courts of Shanghai.

Four names of Kin-jin (Cainites) did pop up in your travels during brief interactions with the Kuei-jin: (1) Zao Lot, his name was synonymous with betrayal though his Clan is not clear to you, (2) Celestyn, his name was synonymous with harmony and you began to drop it when in a tight situation with aggressive Kuei-jin. You believe him to be Tremere based on, (3) Voracia, her name was synonymous with demonic energy though her Clan is not clear to you; and (4) Thomas Wyncham, a Tremere Elder recently arrived in Hong Kong.

Once you realized there was a Tremere Elder in Hong Kong and that the Fire Court of Hong Kong was quite weak, you realized that a return there was sensible.

You presented yourself to the Prince of Hong Kong Robert Pedder who initially refused to grant you Domain (you had the sense he was a British Elitist) until Wyncgam intervened.

You were able to join Wyncham's Chantry, which consisted at the time of only Wyncham himself as his Childe (Oliver Thrace) had been sent to Shanghai. After some time studying with Thomas and establishing your Domain in Hong Kong, Wyncham informed you that you would need to head to Vienne to be "formally introduced" into the Clan.

Domain - Several Blocks in a Hong Kong District near the Chantry.

Herd - British Military operatives in Hong Kong.

Contacts - Robert Pedder (while he may begrudge your existence, in your time in Hong Kong he began to work with you as there are still very few Cainites in Hong Kong at this time).

Mentor - Thomas Wyncham (while he would normally be a 5 Mentor as a member of the inner circle, your short duration in the Chantry and his busy duties, plus you NOT being a member of his bloodline reduces his Mentor value to 2).

Status - To be discussed in a separate post.

[Small change to the letter being sent narrative but it makes sense in the context of Hong Kong].

I will decide that in the next day or so, I am leaning towards not doing so and allowing the PCs to create your own hierarchy within the context of the chronicle.

Apprentice Ranks:

• The First Circle of Mystery (A1) You're the baby. Learn to feed, learn the Traditions, learn your clan disciplines and what it means to be a Vampire of Clan Tremere. This is a good rank for In-Game embrace concepts, or very new players. Likely still under the Accounting in Camarilla circles.

• The Second Circle of Mystery (A2) You've mastered the basics, but still bear watching to make sure you don't do anything problematic. You won't be taught any secrets here, since you've not yet gained the full confidence of your Regent. If you're a first time Tremere player who is fairly new to the game, this is a good place to start.

• The Third Circle of Mystery (A3) Trusted member of the Chantry. At this point, you're considered generally competent and can function largely on your own recognizance, but deeper matters will still be out of your reach. Most players start about here if they are familiar with Tremere.

• The Fourth Circle of Mystery (A4) Accomplished and trusted to get things done and pursue their own projects. This is where politics heat up and currying favor with the Regent becomes key to future advancement.

• The Fifth Circle of Mystery (A5) You've proven your competence, loyalty, and effectiveness. Here you get some responsibility for training the A1 and A2s and may begin recruiting the A3s and A4s to aid in your projects, as long as they don't interfere with existing orders or goals of the Regent

• The Sixth Circle of Mystery (A6) At A6 you are likely to be delegated the busywork of running the Chantry, or of maintaining a satellite or special project chantry. Grooming for promotion to Regent often begins here.

• The Seventh Circle of Mystery (A7) At A7, your Regent is pretty much comfortable recommending you to his Lord for promotion to Regent yourself. You are your Regent's right hand and anything you tell your juniors is assumed to be from the Regent himself, or at least approved by the Regent. Alternately, your Lord might have hand-picked you for this rank as a warning to your Regent. In this case, expect all hands to be turned against you, and the Regent to seek reasons to take you down...or out.

In case I DO decide to use the Ranks of the Pyramid

Ok, build advice needed:

I want Jaath be the son of a noble and work him into a multiclass Noble/Scoundrel or Scoundrel/Noble...but am unsure which class should go first. I'm not looking to min/max here, I just don't want to end up unintentionally hampering him as I plan for his long-term development.

Obviously starting with Scoundrel and having it revealed that he has noble connections works, but having him grow from privileged noble into the life of a scoundrel works too. Depending on how it plays out, I'm strongly considering the Force Sensitive feat as well, but we'll see how that goes.

I know there's always the saying "Play what you want." and I'm trying to do so. Just unfamiliar enough with the system to be effective at it. LOL

Start Noble and take Force Sensitive, if only because it gives you more options to open later when you take Force Sensitive early on.

Unless you want to build an alternate arc where you maybe have a second identity as a Noble, but actually you are a Scoundrel, not sure what feats would be applicable there so Phntm would have more insight on how that could work, if it could work (of course you could always Spaceballs it, you never knew you were a Noble so forced into the life of a Scoundrel).

I am by no means an expert in this system, I ran a game for about 2 years or so (to some extent relied on more knowledgeable players to learn it as I went) and have played several characters as high as level 5 but nothing beyond so this is more opinion then expert build advice.

The City of Padua - Donato Elba

The music stops as you begin to speak, though the Mortals continue to dance they do so at a much slower and disjointed pace. The two odd Cainites continue to writhe themselves and mouth words.

The Prince shrugs, "I have no spies in Venice young Donato. I freely trade information in the spirit of cooperation.

As of now, all I know is that which I have been told by those that flee. They I can confirm yet exist. As to your Sire, I do not know.

Things on the lagoon are in... flux. I await word from my brethren as to how things will unfold. There are no Hunters present here".

Gustav, indeed the entire Court, is waiting on your next words.

Venice by Night - Thursday - April 3, 1309

The City of Padua - The Child Tremere

As you wake, Eliastor whispers in your ear of the rumors that have the Court of Prince Guilelmo Aliprando abuzz.

An organization, called the Camarilla, in the process of being formed by the Elders of each Clan to end the War of Princes, appears to have been attacked by Mortal Hunters during the Day. The Elders have been forced to flee and many have come through Padua. It is unclear what Elders have perished at the hands of these Hunters, but at least some if not most of the Childer of these Elders, Embraced to create cohesion in the new organization, were left behind to perish so that their Sires could be free.

Rumors from several days ago confirmed that your own Sire, Radek, had by some miracle, won the leadership position for the Usurpers in this Sect despite his status as a rogue. That alone almost convinced you to visit Venice, so nearby. However, your distaste for Radek delayed a visit. After all, did not Radek abandon you to a fate of immortality in the body of a child for his own selfish pursuits? In some ways, you are kin to those abandoned Fledglings! Certainly, Radek may argue that he left his own Gargoyle behind to “protect” you, but Eliastor acts more like a Mother Hen than a mighty guardian.

Pushing your thoughts about your Sire aside, there may be opportunity in the chaos. If visitors were forced to flee might not residents of the city have been forced to flee as well? Is there now a power vacuum among the Cainites in Venice? Here in Padua, you are an oddity to the Prince. A member of his "Macabre Menagerie" as the many Cainite visitors to the city have nicknamed his residents. But, is an oddity ever going to wield true power if that is all he is ever seen as?

Eliastor advises against such a trip, after all, Cainites are collectively the target of these Hunters and neither of you exactly blend! Still, you decide that at least further direct investigation is warranted. Thus, it is to the Gypsy you must go.

The Dancing Gypsy

The Gypsy is the heartbeat of the City for Paduan Cainites. Both Elysium and Court of the seat of power of Prince Guilelmo Aliprando, Childe of the mighty Narses of Venice.

You step into the Tavern in the heart of Padua and as always, the place is raucous with several Bards paying instruments and singing and patrons dancing. The lyrics are dark and disturbing being sung in an eastern language and even though you cannot understand the words something about them is compelling those present to move, it makes your skin crawl. Eliastor is beside you, hiding his bulky form with that of a large bulky blacksmith his go to “mask”, the mask is imposing enough that few stop and stare at him long.

Your eyes are drawn to the back of the room, almost uncontrollably so. He is southern Italian in complexion with long dark hair and a dark goatee, the Prince. He is seated approximately ten feet from the dancing revelers, as they dance, they glance in his direction now and then as if seeking his approval. Standing next to him are a man and a woman. The woman has a crooked smile and a dazed look in her eyes. The man is long of limb and tall. She and he mouth words though no sound is uttered from their lips. Both are part of his menagerie. Both of unique Bloodlines – Daughter of Cacophony the female, Kiasyd the male, if you remember correctly.

As you approach you see that he is already holding Court, a recent guest in his domain, a Ventrue Gustav Breidenstein, and a Cainite you do not recognize. Other Cainites that inhabit the city are also here observing, though there is a new face or perhaps two in the spaces reserved for Cainites.

The singing becomes louder to drown out their conversation. You can hear them speak, as if right into your ear, regardless of the volume and it appears that their audience has just begun…

Note that the language being spoken is Italian.

”Greetings Prince Guilelmo, I am Bajazet al Nasir of Clan Assamite. I find myself here after having fled the troubles of Venice”.

”Be welcome Bajazet’.

Gustav cuts in, ”You see Prince Guilelmo, there is clearly cause for action as I have advised”.

The Prince frowns. The two Cainites behind him continue to speak in tongues as the dance becomes a bit more frenetic but only slightly so.

”Suggested, Patrician, suggested. You are not my advisor. I assure you that things are under control and even if they are not, we are here in Padua and safe from these Hunters”.

The Assamite shrugs, ”I care not to go back there again Gustav. The cloak I used for protection from the sun to escape has been destroyed and it cannot be utilized again, the Viziers shall have my hide for its sacrifice, I am sure. I am passing through Padua and announced myself as a courtesy, not to seek retribution.

This Camarilla has started on shaky ground and these Mortals may well have slain it in its cradle”.

The Prince’s flanking Cainites sing a dirge that gets the Mortals within to dance a bit more slowly, sorrowful looks upon their faces.

Gustav responds, ”You would flee now? This Sect has just formed, we must rally behind it and show force against these Mortals that dare strike at their betters”.

The Assamite shakes his head, ”I must report to the Old Man what has occurred, he may well change his mind based upon what has transpired. If he does not, I will send a missive to Hardestadt the Elder. If he does, the Silence of Clan Assamite shall be our answer as to whether we have any interest in continuing to play your political games”.

The Prince’s eyes flicker to Gustav, who appears disgusted with the Assamite. Gustav does not bother replying as the Assamite has made his opinion on the matter quite clear. Al Nasir bows to the Prince and exits the Gypsy. The Prince then turns his eyes to you and Eliastor, ”Greetings Neonate, what is it you wish to speak with me about this evening?”

Gustav steps back, realizing he is dismissed, but refusing to be sent away from his audience so summarily.

Just realized I did not reward XP for the completion of the previous night.

Everyone gains 3 XP (even if you were not currently playing) and you can freely spend XP until the beginning of the next night's resumption, i.e. when I start up again on May 31.

Not trying to hold things up, just trying to buy time to let Kossel get the lay of the land here as knowing what we are breaking into ahead of time should help!

Geoffroi de Clairvaux wrote:

Ooooor …. Part of Geoffroi’s backstory is being an assistant curator of the Templar Knights’ hidden occult library. With the Salubri-Tremere conflicts, perhaps that can be worked into the upcoming campaign somehow.

Just skylarking…

The Tremere/Salubri conflict does not exist in this Chronicle.

For Geoffroi that's OOC but for you, Tremere ended up Diablerizing the Ravnos Antediluvian. The Tremere hunted the Ravnos. The Salubri are currently still a respected High Clan though their numbers are small due to (1) conflict the Baali, (2) conflict with Outremer Cainites [Assamites Setites] during the Crusades, and (3) culling of the Knights Templar.
