About Deidre Deimos

Backstory:
Deidre Deimos entered the world on 31 Pharast, the last day of the month dedicated to the goddess Pharasma. Although such a thing should be impossible, she swears to this day that she recalls the last look on her mother's face before she expired, her spirit exhausted by the effort of bringing Deidre into the world. It was a brush with death that would mark Deidre forever, even in the first moments of life.

She was raised by her father, who knew little of what to make of her - Deidre was hardly like other girls. Her childhood in the town of Ardis in central Ustalav was marked by a fascination with death from an early age. At one point, young Deidre came across a wolf on the outskirts of town that was clearly dying, having been left to do so by some vengeful farmer. Rather than fleeing as her friends did, Deidre sat by the animal's side and stroked its matted fur, staying with it as its breath became weak and shallow, and indeed until it finally stopped altogether. Having been alerted to Deidre's whereabouts by the other children, her father sat on a hillock nearby and watched the young girl soothe the animal's passage into death. He finally knew what should be done.

The next morning, he took Deidre to the local church of Pharasma, where she was mentored by a kindly old cleric named Father Dale. Dale taught young Deidre about the Pharasman Rites, passing all his knowledge of the goddess to a mind that he found to be open to and hungry for it. For Deidre's part, she finally felt as though she belonged somewhere, a feeling she was unfamiliar with, but altogether comforted by. As the years wore on, Deidre was indoctrinated into the Pharasman clergy, serving as an acolyte for several years.

It was during this time that Deidre met Petros Lorrimor, a scholar from nearby Ravengro. Lorrimor was fascinated by the history of the Pharasman rites, and found his equal on the topic in Deidre. He encouraged her to research the rites, and pass along any new information to him via courier. Several times she did so, and enjoyed the correspondence greatly.

Sadly, Deidre's work was interrupted by a more solemn duty - Father Dale was dying, seized by the wasting, and it fell to Deidre to shepard him to Pharasma's embrace. This would mark her passage to the full clergyhood, allowing her to perform the rites alone and unaided, and to see to the care and aid of a portion of the populace on her own, should she choose to do so. She gladly assisted Father Dale, sitting by his side and smoothing his hair, whispering comfortingly to him just as she had with the wolf those many years ago. Finally, as a look of relief passed over his face, he passed over, blessing Deidre with his last breath before doing so. She was a cleric now.

As she began to make up her mind about how to proceed and what to do next, she received a letter from Ravengro. Anxious to again hear Professor Lorrimor's thoughts, she opened the letter, only to find that he had died, and that she was being requested at the funeral. Naturally, she began to make preparations, and was given a not-small sum of money by the head of the Ardin church of Pharasma. It seems that Petros Lorrimor had held Deidre's research in high regard, and had insisted that she be paid for it. As she accepted the money, a single tear rolled down her cheek, a tribute to a man that was far too kind to pass so early, whether it was the Lady's will or not. She bought a few things that she might need if the road should become hazardous and set off, eager to lend any aid she could in laying the kind Professor to rest.
