About Dargail Bogan

Dargail Bogan, the life story:

Dargail Bogan is a dwarf of the noble class in Orzammar. His family was descended from a paragon and his Father Hunguff Bogan had a seat in the Assembly and was a well respected member of the courts. Dargail was the youngest of four sons and two daughters. He was his mothers favorite but was not expected to inherit much of his father’s legacy. Dargail did not care and spent much of his life training in the combat arts. Dargail proved to be highly perceptive and was quickly able to discern lies and notice things that many others would over look. He had a profound gift of wisdom that his brothers and sisters seemed to be missing.

It wasn’t long before his father took notice of Dargail’s unusual gift. He gave Dargail the responsibility of working as an inspector for the Proving. Dargail proved adept at this and was able to spot and catch cheaters frequently. This led to Dargail being raised to chief Proving Inspector. Few cheaters made it past Dargail Bogan’s watchful eye.

Dargail proved to be a decent fighter also. The Carta had sent several assassins to try and take Dargail’s life. He was usually able to see them coming and would often develop tactics for dealing with them without having to fight them directly but that wasn’t always possible. Dargail often found himself alone and in a situation where he’d have to fight his way out. We eventually started competing in the Proving itself. Again he had to fend off assassination attempts even in the Proving.

As years passed, Dargail came to realize that dwarves are a rather dishonest bunch and he wanted to eliminate corruption from the courts. This didn’t sit well with the courts either and eventually Dargail was seen as overstepping his boundaries. Eventually his father began to threaten to disown him when, Dargail tried to expose a friend of the family as a fraud. Dargail noticed the one thing he had overlooked his whole life, his own father was just as corrupt as his friend.

Eventually Dargail resigned from the Proving inspector position and began a life career as a common watchman. He spent some time praying to the ancestors as to what his purpose was. He could see corruption everywhere in Orzammar but there was nothing he could do to stop it. He then began to fumble around the idea of heading to the surface and find a prestigious role up there. He spent time studying the lore of the above lands and even reading foreign books on the Chantry and the Maker. Some how, these ideas made more sense to him than the Ancestor Worship of his own people. He soon entertained thoughts of seeking out a chantry to learn more.

When his father found out about Dargail’s plans, he was furious. He called Dargail a traitor to the family name and a wannabe surface dwarf. Things were not comfortable after that. His father gave Dargail the cold shoulder all the time and would not speak with him.

One day and apostate showed up seeking refuge from the chantry. He bribed Hunguff to live at the Bogan estate for a time. During that time, Dargail learned that this apostate was a blood mage. In the chantry books that he had read, Blood mages were evil being that resorted to using blood for power and would often commune with demons and sacrifice other people to gain their power. Templars hunted blood mages down and killed them or made them tranquil in order to keep the common folk safe. Blood mages had immense powers of mind control they used to enslave victims or enemies. They were no better than darkspawn and just about any apostate could be a blood mage.

Dargail confronted the mage and got him to confess his sin. The mage took a defensive response when Dargail threatened to turn him in. First the mage sacrificed one of Dargail’s sisters to allow him to take control of his father and brothers minds. Soon Dargail found himself battling for his life against his own family. Dargail proved resilient to the blood mages powers and managed to best his father in combat. His brothers proved to be more of a challenge. His remaining sisters and his mother came to his aid. They fought their way through the family and Dargail finally found an open path to the mage. He swung his axe and felled the man in one clean stroke. When Dargail turned to survey the battlefield, he was shocked to find that none of his family had survived the grisly encounter. His axe was now stained with the blood of not only the mage, but also that of his own family. He took his fathers Waraxe and fled Orzammar, praying to the maker that he would find some other destiny out on the surface.

Dargail managed to escape to the surface before the incident was discovered. The first thing he did was seek out a chantry. After a good deal of hiking, He found Red Cliff. There he appealed to the chantry telling of his encounter with a blood mage and telling of how he had lost his whole family to the monster. The Chantry mother wasn’t sure what to do with the dwarf at first but she accepted him for the time being.

Dargail worked as a porter for a time and continued to study under the tutelage of the mother. One day when he was out in town running errands he spotted another possible apostate. Dargail studied the man for about an hour, watching his movements and saw all the signs he was looking for. Definitely an apostate, of this Dargail was sure. Dargail immediately, out of line, approached the man and confronted him with his findings. Almost immediately the man turned hostile. Dargail was surprised to see the man resort to blood magic to attempt to fight him off. Dargail somehow resisted the spells power and managed to tackle the man. The commotion drew the guards and they, and a templar that was with them, witnessed Dargail’s defeat at the hands of the mage. Instantly, before the mage could finish his kill, the templar moved in, drew his sword, and cut the mage down where he stood.

Dargail had survived but his resiliency was noted by the templar and shared with the mother. Soon, Dargail was accepted for templar training. It is not a common occurance for a dwarf to be accepted as a templar but his skills were too valuable to pass up and he was put right into training. Dargail proved adept at the craft and was devoted to his new calling. Every night before bed he would say a prayer to the maker, everyday, thanking him for showing him his new path.

Once his training was completed, Dargail was to be a mage hunter. He would accompany other templars out into Ferelden to find any illegal mages. Dargail fit in nicely with his new “family”. His abilities to root out corruption and to find apostates proved invaluable to the chantry. He had also felt free to laugh and sing again. He joked and would go out with the other templars on their time off. He had finally felt at peace. After some time though, he bagan to wonder, “what next.” Every night, he prayed a new prayer to the maker. “I am here now. What is the next step?” Dargail would keep his eyes open for any sign of a new calling.
