Don't know if anyone is still checking this thread. I'm going to finally take it out of my firefox tabs. If I get it going again, which is unlikely, I'll send you a pm.

Please see discussion forum

I am so terribly sorry guys. I'm just not able to get myself to work on this campaign. That's why I've been so slow to post. Truthfully, I have nothing prepared, just some vague ideas, and have been developing all the information on the spot. Unfortunately, for this type of campaign, with politics and heavy roleplaying, that just doesn't work. So I regret to inform you that I will have to bow out of being DM. If someone want to take over for me, I'm totally fine with that, and I'd be willing to play in it even. Otherwise, I'll be sad to see you all go, this was shaping up to be a great game. Hopefully I will see you all in different games I'm in.

As everyone takes their seats, King Barnabus Amular III becomes very serious. It is now time for business, and the king almost seems a different man. He has all the air of regality, and there is no doubt now that he is king of his domain. He looks everyone in the eye and then begins.

“You all know why you are here. Relations between Amular and Talfor have broken down. Things were already tense between us, before the tipped lance at Carnagy. Now my son is missing, I can only assume they are to blame, since they blame us for stealing their greatest treasures, which we had nothing to do with. Their forces have all withdrawn, we can only presume for an all-out attack. We have no idea though, as all spies that we send into their kingdom mysteriously vanish. I have to assume a traitor, but that is none of your concern.”

“I need you six to save this continent from war. In a nut shell, you need to go to their king and see if we can settle things peacefully. Now that is the difficult part. They will expect their treasure back, but we do not have it, and I will want my son back, which they of course deny having.”

The king pauses here, pain evident in his eyes, but quickly a steely gaze comes back over them, and he looks at everyone again, impressing upon them the importance of this mission, especially to him.

“And as if that wasn’t hard enough, getting there is going to be a pain. I can only guarantee you safety through my kingdom. Once you cross there border, they may be just as likely to ram you through with a sword as let you in for dinner.”

He chuckles slightly at this, then seriousness returns.

“Now that you know the situation, I want you to rethink your commitment to this. This will not be easy, and despite you all being great diplomats, this will be the most important diplomacy of your lives. The fate of thousands rest on your shoulders, and you may not even make it back to see the difference you made. There is no shame in leaving now, for what I ask is great. I would prefer to not ask this of anyone, but desperate times call for desperate measures. If you are all willing to go forward, then we will begin the details of your trip.”

He looks at you all expectantly, his representative almost looks nervous.

Head over to the Gameplay thread, as now we start.

The door to the room opens wide. A number of servants enter the room. These look better than those that had just left. These wore deep red liveries, with gold lining, the lion emblazoned upon their chests. These are the king’s personal servants. They line the walls, taking the place of those that had left. Then walks in the king. As the king enters, everyone stands. Kraymar clicks his heels together making a loud clicking noise and salutes.

The King seems almost like a normal person. If it wasn’t for the deep red robes, fur lined collar, and enough embroidery to make another outfit, he would almost seem to be another one of the guys. He is obviously human, without pointy ears, clean shaven, and standing about 6’2”. He seems to be well built, though it is hard to tell under the thick robes. He has high cheek bones, a pronounced nose, and eyes a deep blue, that goes well with his dirty blonde hair. His hair is tied at the top of his head, creating a high knot that makes him seem almost taller. His skin is white, though well-tanned from many hours spent outside the castle.

When he enters, he throws his arms wide and looks at you all.“Thank you for being here!” He welcomes everyone jovially. He notices the rapt attention of Kraymar. “Please please, let us not stand on formality here. You are here to save this kingdom, and for that, you owe me no special dues.”

He strides forward to Kraymar. “At ease. I’m glad to see you here Kraymar, we will need your knowledge and expertise on this mission of course.” He shakes his right hand, while his left clasps his shoulder.

Then he moves over to Bryn. “Ah Mr. Goao of House Ausum. I’m glad to see the middle class will be represented on this endeavor. We should have no worries with you around.” He shakes his hand firmly and gives him a knowing look.

He turns and looks at Yix, then slides over in front of him. “Why if it isn’t Yix Windsoul. I’ve heard of the great things you have done at the Schola Scientie. You have been a great help to them, and I’m glad you will be representing such a great school.” He gives Yix a little bow.

Seriously, he approaches Ilamin. “May the Inheritor guide you always, Inquisitor Davenish. I’m glad to see the will of Iomedae with be given great justice on this mission.” He gives Ilamin a deep bow of respect.

He sees Sigghild and smiles broadly. He moves over and gives her a big handshake. “Siggy! Sorry, I mean Sigghild Thorvinsdottir. Thank you so much for stepping in when Khelreddin was called away. I know you will do well to represent the military. I may even get you that horse you’ve always wanted when you get back.”

Finally, he approaches Leanidas. He looks straight into her eyes. “Sir Leanidas Volox of House Volox. It is my honor to finally meet you. I know this envoy will be safe in your hands.” He gives her a stiff nod of approval.

Having met everyone, he smiles again, then heads over to his seat and sits down. The king’s representative moves over and stands by his shoulder. The king waves his hand, inviting you all to sit as well.

Ok, a day later than I figured, but now it has started. I'm pretty sure Sigghild will be the only one not surprised by how the King acts, because she is the only one whose met him. The rest of you have heard talk that the king was a little odd, but you figured it to just be the standard rumors that run around. I tried to make sure he wouldn't insult anyone by his actions, if I didn't read your character right, let me know for the future. Throw up your reactions to everything, and then we will get down to business.

A servant enters the room, and whispers to the kings representative. The representative nods, and the servant leaves the room. He steps forward slightly.

"Good news. The King has finished with his business, and will be joining us shortly. I hope everyone has enjoyed there meal, but now it is time to focus back on business.

He motions to the servants around the walls, and they suddenly leap into action, clearing the tables and walking off with everything. As each one leaves the room, a new servant enters to take their place, standing humbly in the same places that their predecessors were.

Once all the tables are cleared, the represenative waves his hand at the table, and the servants jump into action again. The move the round tables to the side of the room, clearing a space in the middle. You see a servant brush the wall, and the same side passage Khelreddin left down opens. The servants pull out 2 large rectangular tables and set them up in the cleared space, side by side, making one larger, almost square talbe. The two maps are set in the middle of the table. Chairs are put around the table, along with a highly ornate, gold gilded chair, which you assume is for the king. Each servant bows, and leaves the room, leaving only the diplomatic party and the kings representative.

@ Kraymar:

Since the pieces showing the ground forces were removed, and you are not too familiar with the military's deployment, you aren't able to garner anything from the map. As far as naval, you have not seen any Talforian naval forces since the start of the international troubles. They had seemed to disappear.
The rumors were that they were planning a naval strike, which was laughable because Amular actually had a naval force, unlike Talfor who never seemed to be too involved with that. They preferred small fast ships using guerrilla warfare tactics, since they couldn't stand against the much larger more powerful ships Amular has.

@ Sigghild:

The ground forces of Talfor seemed to have disappeared, at least to common knowledge. They have pulled a lot of their forces back, and with the current situation between the two kingdoms, there is no easy way to know what and where their current strength is. However, you can assume there have been spies and such sent, so maybe the king will have a clear picture.

@ Yix: They are correct, masterwork does not count for the magical enhancement. The easy way to think about it, is that magical abilities (flame, speed, ect) have to be applied to a magical weapon. Enchanting your weapon/armor to +1 makes it magical, and then abilities can be applied to it.

Sorry about how long this has taken. I've been busier than I ever expected. The King will show up today, and we will get this started. I'm amazed at your dedication, the other two groups I'm in disappeared this holiday season. It's time to get this party... er... mission started.

The door to the room opens. In walks the kings represenative with a host of servants carry trays filled with food. You see roast suckling pig, breads of different shapes, sizes, and textures, cheeses letting off aromas from sweet to mild, and many more things.

The kings representative looks a little winded, probably from running around trying to figure out whats going on. Despite this he still presents himself regally for his message.

"Yes, it seems that Lord Evreskar has been called away on other business. Lady Sigghild Thorvinsdottir will be taking his place on this mission. It also appears that the king has been called away as well, on what I would assume is the same business."

The representative looks annoyed at these change of events, and that he was unaware they were taking place. He continues,

"As such, I saw fit for food to be brought. We were preparing for the Feast of Sangiving anyways, I just borrowed some of the food."

A look of satisfaction appears on his face at this last phrase, probably what he feels is retribution for being kept out of the loop. The servants lay out the food and silverware upon the tables. The two maps are rolled up and put aside until the meal is over.

"Inquisitor Davenish, would you be so kind as to lead us in prayer, and give thanks to Iomedae for us?"

The Feast of Sangiving is to celebrate the anniversary of the first landing upon this continent (I will have a history of the kingdoms later). This is actually a smaller celebration. More focus is put on the anniversary of the official naming of the kingdom, which occurs in a few months. Usually just a feast is held for lunch, otherwise not much else is done.

@ Sigghild, you ended up introducing yourself before I had a chance. No problems though. Also, please reference DHs Guide to Play By Post gaming in order to see the proper format your posts should be in.

@ Kray
Once again, in order to put shock on your weapon, it would have to be a +1 weapon first. That's 2000 gp. Putting any magical enhancement on a weapon requires first a +1. Then you can put shock on it, which makes it a +2 weapon, making the total cost 8,000 gp.

The kings representative seems rather surprised by the turn of events.

"Please excuse me. I uh... I need to see what's going on."

He bows and hurries out the door.

It looks like mousestalker, playing Sigghild, will be taking khels place. Once he posts in here, I'll get him introduced.

Sorry guys, all of a sudden today became crazy. If I post it will be later tonight. Then I have to move again this thanksgiving, and there is thanksgiving. As much as I hate it, I think I'm going to postpone everything until Monday. You guys can keep posting here, and I'll keep checking and answering questions as needed, but the king probably won't show up until Monday. At which point it will probably move over to the Gameplay thread, but I'm not certain. Once again, I'm sorry. I will not let this die as long as you all are willing to stick around.

Also, Khel is going to have to leave us. I'll let him explain if he wants. I will be looking to the applicants to replace him, so there will be a slight change in the group but it will carry on.

Well I have been mistaken about the rules for some time. "A weapon with a special ability must also have at least a +1 enhancement bonus." (end of third paragraph) I thought the enhancement had to equal the special ability. However, this still would make the scimitar a +4, +1 enhancement, +3 speed enhancement, costing 32,000. That's not going to fly. I also said that you can't spend more than half your money on one magical item. Figure out something else to do with it. Thank you.

The Kings Representative hears Ilamin's questions and nods.

"Yes yes, your questions will be answered when the king arrives. That should be any minute now."

And by minute, I mean tomorrow. I'll begin to explain the details of the mission then.

It would stand to reason that you all would have some association or at least know of each other. You were all picked as the top diplomats in your area, which means you are well known or have some stories that have spread throughout the land.

@ khel
Go for the change. If you can show a comparison on exactly what has changed, that would make it easier. Like Fort: +5/+7 to show before and after.

@ Kray
Yeah, the speed enhancement is a +3 enhancement. Which means first it would have to be a +3 sword, then you add the +3 enhancement, which equals a +6 sword. That would make the sword cost 72,000 gp. Not going to work. You can call your scimitar a swish scimitar, but it's nothing special other than how it may look.

In case people were wondering, 4 of our 6 use weapon finesse to fight.

@ Kray & Bryn:

That's part of why I put you both in this. I knew there would be a connection between you two. Go ahead and read each others backgrounds. Unless Bryn feels it should play out differently

@ Bryn:

Scanning around the room everything seems normal. The servants seem meek and uninterested in what is going on. The kings representative was quietly whistling to Yix's music, swaying in spot until it stopped, at which point he focused back in on what was going on. The room looks as previously described. You can assume that many noble dignitaries have waited in this very room.

@ thom
You did fine. I didn't hold your background against you. Mainly, we already had a part monk, and I was looking for more skills in the "insurance policy" role. So it had to do with party make up.

The steward recognizes Kraymar and smiles satisfactorily

"Ah good, you brought it. Let's see..." He looks among the tables. He walks up to one and pats it. "Place it right here, on the table next to the other map."

@ khel
You forgot to add stunning fist to your list of abilities

@ Kray
What is a swish scimitar? Also your disable device should be higher.

Looking good so far. Like the writing styles. Should be a fun group.

Do it however you want. My suggestion is do crunch discussion ooc, but introductions and conversation in character.

DECISION TIME

You all are mingling around in the waiting room commonly used to wait for audiences with the king. Spirits are running high, along with tension. You all have a good reason to be here. You were chosen by your respective area to represent the nation in the most important mission in your lifetime. You wait as the king deliberates with his counselors, diplomatic advisers, and other important officials of the government. You hear the door handle turn, and suddenly the room goes dead silent, as you all know what is about to happen. The door opens, and the representative for the king enters.

“Thank you all for coming here this day, and to be willing to participate in this endeavor. Despite the fact that you all qualify for this mission, we cannot send all of you. After much deliberation, thought, and input from everyone, along with the glowing recommendations you all received, we have decided on six people to send. To protect, honor, and serve the diplomatic mission, and to be bodyguard, is Leanidas Volox. Representing the Military, the might and power of our kingdom, is Khelreddin Evreskar. To represent the will of Iomadae, and to make sure justice is paramount in this operation, Ilamin Davenish. The Schola Scientiae is Amular’s most prestigious achievement, and embodies the knowledge and discipline that our Kingdom has. Its representative is Yix Windsoul. The Navy exemplifies the far reaching impact our nation has, and is key in international relations. As such, the king and council have decided to have it apart of this mission, and will be represented by Commander Kraymar Hinstulkin. Finally, the last representative will have the economic and social implications in mind of this mission. Representing the Mercantile, Bryn Goao.”

“Thank you all for coming here. Those that have been chosen, please follow me to the planning chamber. The rest of you will find that we have rooms set aside for you at the Cozy Compass Inn, feel free to enjoy your stay there until you return home.”

The Kings Representative motions to those that were chosen, inviting them to follow him. He leads them into the planning room.

Thank you all for submitting. This was more difficult than I thought it was going to be. If you didn’t make it, I hope you can find a new home for your characters; they all deserve a good place. If you are curious as to why you didn’t make it, you can send me a PM and I should be able to tell you. Also, I will come to you guys first if someone drops out.

For those that made it, head over to the discussion forum and post in there. Once everyone has posted, we will begin the final stages to head out on… The Diplomatic Mission.

You are lead into the planning room. It is brightly lit with two hanging chandeliers full of burning candles and decorated lanterns around the room. There is a table set with Hors d'œuvre and light wines, which is customary when entertaining high ranking officials. There are a few round tables in the room, covered in lace table cloths, surrounded by high back wooden chairs, detailed with a carving of a lion rearing on its hind legs, the symbol of the kingdom. The tables and chairs rest upon a large, lush, deep red rug, that makes you just want to take your boots off and step in it barefoot. There are a few liveried servants wearing pure white garments, with the lion emblazoned in gold thread upon the shoulders, evenly spaced along the walls, heads down, trying to be invisible. The pure white and the deep red are the nations colors, as can be seen by the nations flag that hangs over the door.

Upon one of the table’s is a map of the kingdom, and into the neighboring kingdom of Talfor, along with some pieces on it that shows deployment of troops. The representative moves quickly to the table and removes the pieces. The representative turns and addresses you.

“Please everyone, come in. This will be the time for you to get to know each other, and plan your strategy of what you want to do. The King will show up later to personally meet you, and to tell you what the current situation is. Feel free to have relax until then. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me, I may be able to answer them. If you have any special needs, one of the servants” He gestures to the servants along the walls “Should be able to help you.” He moves to the side of the room.

Go ahead and compare character stats. No need to overlap spells and such. Decide how you want to split up camping supplies and other mundane items. Remember horses and feed will be provided if you don't have any. I'm thinking we will start the full campaign next Monday, since it is Thanksgiving this week. Until then, we can have fun in here.

I'm really sorry guys. This are going way slower than I thought. I should have put this off for a couple weeks until everything settled down. As such, I haven't started decided on characters. I plan on buckling down tomorrow and getting it done, but no promises.

@ thom:

Looking good so far. Keep it up! You got some time.

1. If you don't own a horse, a horse will be provided for the duration, but you it will be taken back when you return. Fodder will be provided by the kingdom.

2. Common is still the universal language

@ Tara:

3. No naming conventions. Try googling names, or translating words and such.

4. Spellcasting: Caster level × spell level × 10 gp. Assume its easy to find a level 5 caster, which means Magic Aura would last 5 days. Making it permanent would be expensive. Or, if you are willing to buy scrolls, whatever caster is in the party may be willing to cast it every day.

The only proficiency a monk gets is what it says in their character description. Unfortunately, a lot of the monk weapons do require you to take the weapon proficiency feat. So combat fan and rope dart would require exotic weapon proficiency. We can work out some deal to get you those if you make it.

5. Pairs would not be required. As feinting is not an attack action, you would not need to make attack rolls. A monk can attack using fists, elbows, knees, feet, anything. So you can flurry while wielding fans without needing to use them. Or as they are monk weapons, you can use flurry with them.

6. If it says you can block with it, go for it. You would also need the proficiency with those other weapons.

Crunch looks good, other than the above. You have some skills written down twice.

Your background is insufficient. I'm going to need a really nice background if you want to compete against anyone else, because we have had some great submissions. You have until Sunday night, or Monday if it takes me that long to make my decision.

Ok guys, the timing has ended up changing. I am doing a simple move this weekend (I don't have much stuff), and I was hoping it wasn't going to interfere with the process. However, I realized that I have no time to decided on the characters until tomorrow night. I will hopefully have the results by Sunday night, but I guarantee I will have them on Monday. It seems like all who were going to put more into their background have, So I'm not expecting them to change. Let me know if you do change it.

Sorry if this recruitment as been a little tough, or if I have been rude at all. This is my first time running a recruitment, and I didn't think it would be this difficult. I have asked a lot of you, but that was so that I knew you would have amazing characters that you would be excited to play. It may also be a bit rough starting out, as I don't have much PBP experience, but I think this type of adventure is actually a great way for me to get into it. If you have any comments, concerns, suggestions, ideas, remarks, or anything, feel free to let me know now or during the adventure.

Whoever is chosen, there will be time for you to optimize your character with the group. Changing spells, deciding who carries the tent and such. Since you will be riding horses, and you will have a pack mule or two, weight shouldn't be an issue as far as camping supplies goes. However don't worry about all of that until you are chosen and in the discussion room.

@ Loup:

Scary, demonic orcs that can cast spells. Didn't see that one coming, I guess neither did he. I like the additions, and I was able to figure out your ability scores. Get things updated on your alias when you can. I give you the seal of completion.

@ Loup
I understand. You have a couple days to get things sorted out. You need to give Malaki some good competition, don't want him to get the position to easily.

(I love how I'm making my job harder by doing this)

@ Hetero:

Very nice. A great improvement to the back story. Now go pimp your mount!

I actually saw this cheesy little comic called "Pimp my Chariot". One of those ones full of terrible jokes.

I just want to see what happens when the cleric I know brings in his undead dire bear to get pimped out.

SUBMISSIONS IS NOW CLOSED
Here is the current submissions:

Bodyguard:

  • DM Heterocephalus (Leanidas Volox): human fighter/cavalier
  • Gilthanis (David Trufant III): human samurai

    Military Ambassador:

  • Alzar Malvado (Hadrian Carac): elf paladin (could also fill church role)
  • Khelreddin (Khelreddin Evreskar): half-elf fighter (lore warden), Monk (Master of many styles)
  • Mousestalker (Sigghild Thorvinsdottir): human fighter

    Church Ambassador:

  • Loup blanc (Knight-Brother Valimar of Amular's Iomedaen Church): human paladin (No seal of completion)
  • Malaki (Ilamin Davenish): aasimar inquisitor

    Schola Scientiae Ambassador:

  • CampinCarl9127 (Yix Windsoul): catfolk bard
  • Big om (Rosalynn Thornton): Human wizard enchanter

    "Insurance Policy:

  • Rashly5 (Bryn Goao): Human Spy (3rd party class)
  • Garabbott (Jazz Sedarik): ratfolk ninja
  • Therealthom (Tara Cobbler): human monk (flowing style) (No seal of completion)

    Naval Ambassador:

  • Insnare (Commander Kraymar Hinstulkin): half-elf ranger/rogue

As some will notice, there is now a 6th role, that was created specifically because of an amazing background, it also makes it easier on me to pick the other roles.

If I am mistaken in the role you are trying to fill, let me know.

So now for the games to begin. The two that do not have the seal of completion, I will work with you until Saturday to get your character up and running. Once everyone has the seal of completion, everything will freeze, and I will choose the final players. Until then, those that have the seal, feel free to improve your background, expand the story, make your character better (Make sure to keep a copy of your old background in case I don't like the changes, but I don't think that will happen). Details are good, and the more details the more likely that you will get in.

Do not drastically change your background (ie I was suddenly raised by goblins), unless you are sure it will be better. DO NOT CHANGE YOUR CRUNCH WITHOUT PERMISSION If someone with the seal of completion changes their crunch drastically (ie changes their classes) without asking me first, I will automatically disqualify them. I don't want to read more numbers and decipher skill points unless there is a good reason. It throws off the work I've been putting into making the decision. Just don't do it. If there is an obvious reason, like realizing that you can't talk a goblin into burning things(which is really sad), I'm willing to work with you to change it. However, I don't think anyone has need to change their crunch or back story, because I wouldn't have given you the seal if that was the case.(Obviously this does not apply to those that have not received my patented seal of completion)

Everyone has at least one opposing competitor (except Insnare, who will be making it in). Let's make this competition good.

@ Tara:

Look to Issian Noble or Ustalavic Noble Regional Traits to choose a comparable trait. Looks good so far. Work her up and let me know when ready for the next look.

@ Hetero:

I believe I specifically said, that those that I have given the seal of completion, should not change their character. Oh well. Crunch looks fine, you still have the seal.

@ garabbott:

There is also a catfolk submission, I think it would be funny to have a catfolk and a ratfolk in the same group. Everything looks good, so I give you the seal of completion.

SUBMISSIONS CLOSE TONIGHT AT MIDNIGHT, PACIFIC STANDARD TIME. THAT IS IN 15 HOURS. ANYONE THAT WANTS TO SUBMIT A CHARACTER (for example, the 11 other people that have shown interest but have not submitted anything)TODAY IS YOUR LAST CHANCE

For those that have submitted, there is only 2 that I have not given the seal of completion:

Garabbott ("insurance policy")
Loup blanc (church ambassador)

They have until Saturday to get it. The rest of you with the seal, we are going to PVP to choose winner. JK. Though it would make my job easier. Everyone who has submitted has done a great job. I will give details to you tomorrow on what I want from you over the next few days while I wait for those submissions.

Hassan is right. Normally people use their average starting gold for their class, I'm letting it be max starting gold.

@ Hetero:

If you spent to much money, go ahead and knock it down. I haven't been checking gold spent since that doesn't matter to much in this stage of the process. You already have the seal of completion, so everything you do at this point is optional, though it doesn't hurt your chances to get in. I'm curious how she got the mask, and what it represents to her.

@Khelreddin
I was not just pointing at you. I was letting others know that I don't want people switching any more. Not when the end draws nigh

A lot of people switched from body guard to military because it was initially the other way. I don't want people switching back though. If you've already submitted (especially if I have given you the seal of approval) DO NO SWITCH YOUR CHARACTER AROUND, especially don't change the background. I'm already making my decisions on what I've seen, and if people change, they may just make their chances worse.

@ Hetero:

Very nice. Though you forgot to switch a few he's to she's I won't hold that against you :). I don't think I have any more suggestions to give. Crunch is sound and backstory is good. I give you the seal of completion. Just get that alias updated.

@ rashly5:

Yeah, I was like "I'll give you +1 appraise since it's a merchant house. Oh, appraise is not entirely useful. I know! Linguistics is always nice, and he's probably had experience with forgeries."

"Max starting gold + 10500 for being at level 5." You add them together.

As far as combat maps, it will depend on how the combats turn out. I think it would be cool if we can just roleplay through it, however some battles may be too complex, in which case I will bring in a map.

For example, taking on a giant dragon in an open dungeon, probably don't need a map. Fighting 50 orcs in a labyrinth, probably need a map. Though you guys shouldn't be fighting those, unless you do something silly, like deciding you can buy off war by taking the dragon's treasure.

@ Hassan
If you can write it and make it sound good, it can work.

Ok, interesting to note. You all show more restraint than me as far as the spoilers. Usually I don't read backgrounds just because I don't want to take the time.

NEW RULE
I never said it in the original post, but I figure I should make it clear. I expect those that are chosen to post once a day. If this doesn't work for some people (Like they need weekends off or something) we can work that out once they are chosen. Also, I understand that life happens, and you may need to take a break for awhile. Just let me know and we will 1d20 ⇒ 1 with it. (Get it? roll with it? Ha ha, ha, ha... Joke was a critical fail)

@ Hetero:

Go ahead and switch to bodyguard, and you can drop skill focus. I like how your background is going, and the way you present it. Flesh it out and you'll have a good background.

@mousestalker:

There we go. It looks like you did pick up persuasive, but didn't change your feats. Stats look good, diplomacy looks good, intimidate looks really good. Also, since you dropped dex by 1, your initiative goes down by one.

Backstory looks very good now. I don't see anything you can add.

I assume you'll fix the initiative, so I give you the seal of completion.

@ rashly:

Well now that you posted without a spoiler, everyone knows! It would depend on whether you want them to know, and whether the king would want it a secret or not. That will be figured out at a later time.

As far as trait goes, you gain a +1 trait bonus to appraise and a +1 trait bonus to linguistics to create or detect forgeries. Does that sound fair?

As a question, by show of hands, who reads the other characters backstories and my spoilers to them? (This isn't a trick question, I'm just curious)

Here ye here ye, a proclamation hath come forth from the Dungeon Master, Wofguy!

NEW CAMPAIGN INFO
You will be traveling by horse (one is provided unless you have one already) from the capital of Amular to the capital of Talfor. This travel could take from a week to two weeks, depending on what happens. While in the kingdom, people should respect your position, and you may even get accommodation for free in cities. However, once you enter Talfor, there will most likely be no favors shown, because right now, they kind of hate you. So expect camping under the stars a lot.(This is where you'll wish you had a wizard with Mage's Magnificent Mansion).

There will be time for those that are chosen, to collaborate in the discussion forums on what everyone should bring, so probably leave a couple hundred gold left over for mundane items.

@ mousestalker:

Background looks like a good outline. I like breaking up the prostitution ring, and a mysterious encounter that shaped her life. I'd like to see you expand it out. I think there is good potential here for a great background. Here's some ideas on how you can expand it. Explain more of how she was before her "experience". What made her happy go lucky? How did she get into the military in the first place? That will make the contrast of what she became even clearer. Include the name of the pro-active god (I missed it on the first read through). Try explaining exactly how she brought down the prostitution ring. How exactly did she get picked for a diplomatic mission? It is a far cry from breaking up prostitution rings.

Build looks mostly good. Remember, this is primarily a diplomatic mission (so less fighting), and if you are going to be a military ambassador you need more charisma. I'd suggest dropping your strength to be 16 before racial modifiers, drop your dex to 13, then you can have your charisma be 14. Then I'd suggest dropping cleave for persuasive (+2 diplo, +2 intim)
One technical thing for your crunch: Bracers of Armor give you an armor bonus, which doesn't stack with wearing armor.

Work on your background, maybe change your crunch around, and let me know when you are done.

@ Malacki:

BAM! That's what I'm talking about. Great backstory. You crunch also looks complete, and no mistakes that I see. I give you the seal of completion.

@ Loup:

Good background there. I like how you try selling him in the last paragraph, and the way he got into the church, definitely unique. I'm curious about the type of personality he has. Does that battle still haunt him, that when he gets into conflict he sometimes second guesses himself when it involves others? Or some other kind of doubts about his life? It would provide a unique character, one that's not driven by the death of a loved one, but by the death of those he feels responsible for. Just some food for thought.

I don't think you'll be shopping for a pseudodragon while war is on the line. Maybe you are looking for a companion in your old age though, but wouldn't that be your horse? Just get him a helm of telepathy.

I'd like to see the breakdown of your ability scores, since you have penalties/bonuses in there. Do that and maybe expand your backstory a bit more (a paragraph on the battle would be cool) and I think you'll be set.

@ Hetero:

I see you liked the idea of a phalanx. I'm not wanting people to have an ability score higher than 16 before racial modifiers. Let me also see a breakdown of your skill points. Otherwise I say run with the idea.

@ Khel:

Perfect ending to a good story, and I approve of the rest of the crunch. I give you the seal of completion.

@ Alazar:

Toughness gives you +3 the first level, but then doesn't give you more until after level three. In other words, it gives you +1 hp per level. I assume you will fix that when the time comes. Otherwise, everything looks good. I give you the seal of completion.

NEW CHARACTER CREATION RULES
I'm only accepting one character submission per person. There is enough interest in this, that people submitting more than one character just makes my job more difficult, and not fair for those that don't submit extra.

New submissions will no longer be accepted after: Wednesday, November 14th at Midnight, Pacific Standard Time. Those that have submitted something, will have until Saturday night (this may change) to get your seal of completion from me. That means your character doesn't have to be 100% complete by Wednesday night.

@ Rashly5:

I like how you spent more time on the Noble House than your own back story. Whether you make it in or not, I'll probably be stealing your House. Your background looks good. Maybe expand how your family got into the business. More details is good details.

You forgot to add the deceitful bonus to your bluff skill. Otherwise your crunch looks good. You'll be a strong diplomat if you are chosen.

I don't see anything too important that needs to be worked on. You have my seal of completion.

@ Alazar:

Your HP seems high. Break that down for me. You can't put keen on your elven blade until you have a +1 on it. That would make a +1 Keen Elven Blade 8000 gp, which isn't allowed because you can't spend more than half your gold on 1 magic item.

Name is fine. Once you get those things fixed up, I'll grant you the seal of completion.

@ Gilthanis:

We will see how the party breaks down when the time comes, and we will adjust roles accordingly.

Looks like you did what I asked. You have my seal of completion.

@ Loup:

Crunch looks good. I'd suggest the church position, just because you don't seem that strong in combat, so how could you represent the military? I'm going to say no on the Pseudodragon for now, just because if I let you have one, everyone may want one. However, something may be worked out if you get chosen.

Get that backstory up, and I'll get you approved.

@ Malacki:

Backstory is good. How did his skills manifest as an inquisitor instead of a paladin? Is there any missions that strongly affected him?

Crunch looks good. Spells can be switched in the discussion forum if chosen. I know I said backstory is more important, but I'm finding a lot of discrepancies in peoples crunch, so I'm needing them complete so I can approve them.

Go ahead and put together an alias for him (don't need to post with him, so he can be deleted if not chosen). Flesh out his background a bit, more details is good details. Put together the rest of his crunch, any magic items he's going to buy. Let me know when your ready.

@ Hetero:

Your HP seems rather high. Break that down for me. You could also go for the phalanx archetype, that makes a very good pole arm tank that helps protect others. I'd suggest dropping one or two combat feats to beef up your interaction skills. Maybe take a skill focus. Your diplomacy and sense motive should be higher, because they have been designated as class skills, so one rank should make them higher.

If you can shore up your diplomacy and sense motive higher (though you can still focusing on intimidate as your primary), I'll be fine with you taking the Military Ambassador Position.

@ Khelreddin:

Great backstory, a good read. If you can tie in how you got chosen to represent the military on this mission, then it will be perfect.

Crunch looks very strong. Definitely an interesting way to work with fighting only one handed. I approve your use of dervish dance for your elven scimitar.

Go ahead and finish of your crunch, getting gear and such, and that last paragraph and I'll give you the seal of approval.

@Big OM:

Everything looks good. Now wait with baited breath.

There is a lot going for body guard, only 2 interested in military ambassador. The others are getting about equal attention.

NEW CHARACTER CREATION RULE
For those I haven't given the seal of completion, I need a break down of your skill points. I'm having trouble figuring out how your getting what you have. Put it to the right of your skills in the crunch. It probably won't look good, but once I approve it, you can clean it back up.
Example: Diplomacy: +14 = 3 cha + 5 ranks + 3 class + 2 feat + 1 trait

@ Gilthanis:

Background looks good. I like the "Never forget that battles are not always won with arms and armor but with words as well." I can't think of anything you'd need to add to your background, looks well thought out and complete.

Looks like you have the bonuses on your will and reflex saved switched. I'm reading it that you put 3 ranks into perception, which means the bonus should be 2 wis + 3 ranks + 3 class skill + 1 trait = 9. Go ahead and break down your skills points for me. Going to have the kings banner? I'll have to draft one up for you if you make it. Crunch looks good otherwise.

Finish up with the crunch, and you should be set. Let me know when your ready for inspection soldier.

@ Garrabott:

I see a -1 for your strength mod, assuming that's a typo. Otherwise crunch is fine. At this point, no buying wands without full charges. Look at flash powder and thunderstones as other useful mundane items. I have your skills figured out, so I don't need a break down of them.

I wrote a background just as long. Suggestion for future, include a short summary. Lol at city name. Great back story, a good read. No suggestions.

Figure out the rest of your gear, go ahead and set up an alias for him (don't need to post that way you can delete if not chosen) and I'll give you the seal of completion.

@ Big OM:

Ok, HP and skill breakdown is good. Equipment and spell purchases are good. We'll roll for your spell craft checks in the discussion forum if you get chosen.

That's what I needed for your background, that is all set.

You have the seal of completion. If you can create an alias for her that would be great, makes it easier for me in the decision process. You don't have to post with it, so you can delete it if not chosen.

@ DM Hetero:

Sacred Shield looks fine. I'm fine with variant channeling.

Its funny, I just started looking into building a stonelord today. They are a really cool flavor build, unfortunately they aren't the most sound archetype, with a lot of things not explained in the text. Though the earth elemental is cool, its underpowered vs your level (It'll have 13 hp). I'm fine with you taking it, just letting you know if you decide to go that route.

@ Malacki:

Idea looks good. Go ahead and work him up. Unavailability will be fine.

@ Yix:

Nothing else. If I think of something I'll let you know.

@ Kraymer:

Ok, when I first saw it, the paragraph wasn't there, and I was confused until I looked back. Go ahead and sit back until submissions close, then bite your nails in anticipation.

@ Ross: There is two completed submissions, and 3 partial submissions. Big initial interest, however it takes time for people to submit and have the character approved. So there is at least a couple more days.

@ DM Heterocephalus:

Wow, you're really taking a -4 to attack for that one extra ac? I'm not complaining, just surprised.

It looks like you have a great damage dealer there, however, I'm not seeing how you your going to help the party outside of combat. Its difficult to negotiate with a 3 armed man in the group. You can try and run with it, but I'll need a good back story as to why you would be considered for the body guard.

@ Khelldrin:

I do like that idea, there is a need for knowledge in the group. Hope to read an exciting background, maybe a few of the missions you went on.

I could approve Dervish Dance for that use on a a case by case basis. However, since a ruling here would affect anyone that applies, I'm not willing to let Dervish Dance apply to anything but scimitar. Since combat isn't going to be that big of a deal, it really won't matter that much. If you get picked, we can work together and maybe make some compromises. Until then, don't plan on it.

@Big OM:

Looks very good. Back story is solid, like how she escaped from a life of servitude. Being an ambassador seems a far cry from teaching. Expand that last paragraph a bit more, and I think your back story is good.

Crunch looks good. Not sure where you got all the HP numbers from. I'd also like to see a breakdown of your skills as well.

Do those few things and I think you'll be set.

@ Yix:

Feel free to think about his personality, how will he speak, how will he react to things, ect. Not a requirement though, its for your personal benefit.

@ Kraymar:

You left out the last paragraph of your background. Otherwise you have the seal of completion. Feel free to think about his personality, how will he speak, how will he react to things, ect. Not a requirement though, its for your personal benefit.

If you are going to be making long posts, try to put it in a spoiler, makes it nice for everyone. If you don't know how to do that, at the bottom of your reply, under submit post, it says "How to format your text". Click on show, and it will show you how to do a spoiler.

I understand people not wanting to spend the time to upgrade their characters to level 5. However it makes it hard for me to approve the build if you don't. I don't need details on the equipment other than magic items you may want to buy. Mainly I want a feel of where they are progressing, and what they their exact strength and weaknesses are (feats and skills).

If you want some ideas of what I'm looking for in a background, check out my other aliases. They definitely don't have to be as long as Gnomey's. Essentially what I'm looking for, is a background that reads like a story, or something else that's creative. Also, a section on personality would be good, mainly so that you will know how to have your character act once things get going.

We are currently at 21 people that have either dotted or have submitted something. If you still want to get into this, I suggest you hurry, before I get 20 approved characters.

@ gilthanis:

Ok, that looks right, you had your wisdom at 14 so that put it off by 2 points.

@ Alzar:

Yeah, thats some good starting HP, and you'll still be able to take extra lay on hands with your other feats. Crunch is good for level 1.

Background is looking better. I like the law enforcer trait, I want to see you arrest someone if you get in the group. Try and figure out a name, I know that can be hard. Otherwise things look good. Let me know when you have a name figured out.

@ johnny:

Never seen/read game of thrones.

Unfortunatly, I'll have to turn down the LE alignment, because someone already asked, and this was my response. "The only role that I might let be evil is the "Insurance Policy", but even then, it doesn't look good to send an evil person when trying to negotiate for peace. He would have to have a good back story, and have a personality to be able to gain the trust of his companions and the kingdom." I think you could probably switch him over to lawful neutral. "A lawful neutral character acts as law, tradition, or a personal code directs her. Order and organization are paramount" You swear allegiance to whoever you currently work for, and no one else, whether they be good or evil.

If you make the alignment switch and flesh out the back story a bit more, what got him into body guarding and such, I think you'll be good. I like it.

As far as crunch goes, it looks good, nice damage dealer. Perception is not a class skill, so that will drop by 3.

@ Kraymar:

Amazing. That's all I need to say. Get your crunch into the alias and I'll give you the seal of completion.

@ Yix:

I understand wanting to have the details up there. I'd suggest throwing them in a word document or some such. I won't really need links, I'll be able to find the abilities easy enough (unless you want to, and I wont' complain). I give you the seal of completion.

@ Big om:

I'll let you buy the scrolls you want to inscribe, then roll on here for the spell craft checks. Go head and build your character, and let me know which spells you are wanting to inscribe. Once I approve your build, you can roll the checks.

I do not need the full description of abilities in the crunch. It actually makes it difficult to read. Put a short one sentence summary of what it does, and I can look it up if I need more info.

@ Yix:

First, discrepancy on your perception, one says +6, other says +16, I'm going to assume its the +16. I believe the attack bonuses for your weapons should be +5. For your special abilities, either bold the titles of the abilities, or cut them shorter, I'm finding it hard to distinguish between them. Otherwise your crunch looks good. You can switch your spells once the party gets in place if you want.

Ok, background ties in now. I'd still like to see it expanded more (like how your traits fit into your character), but it is not a requirement. I see some good ways to get your character... "invested" into the story line. Character Complete.

@ Gilthanis:

It looks like you spent 27 points on your ability scores? For your special abilities, either bold the titles of the abilities, or cut them shorter, I'm finding it hard to distinguish between them. Otherwise crunch looks good so far.

I can see how you would easily be chosen for the body guard role. Hoping to see in background what life was like growing up that way. Also, in what ways has he distinguished himself above others to be chosen for this role?

Let me know when the rest is done, then I can give you more feed back.

@ Ross:

"Come in and know me better man!" I feel embodies what your character is. He's had a tough past, but he got through it and presents a cheerful face. It doesn't look like the character has been tailored to this adventure yet so not to much input I can give. I'm curious how he wasn't able to escape the two other times he tried, yet the third time it seems he got out with no problem. Looks like I could work the professors death into the story line, that should be some fun. Let me know when you finish with him.

@ Insnare:

Interesting concept. Definitely something I hadn't thought of. Maybe we will have to have a sea battle if you make it in. Go ahead and expand the back story. How did she get into the navy? What was her first experiences with pirates? What drove her to advance so much within the navy?

Crunch looks solid. Would you plan on taking more ranger levels in the future?

NEW WORLD INFO
I tried to explain the map a bit, but I guess I didn't do very well. I also retract my earlier statement about no tundra, there is a section of it on the continent, however you will not have to deal with it. This is all a work in progress, so please bear with me as some of the worlds details may change.

Here is a map of the continent: Click me please!.

The Kingdom of Amular is red, and the Talfor Regime is blue. You will also notice a yellow and green. These are two other undefined kingdoms at this point, that probably won't make an appearance in this adventure. There was strong trade between between Amular and the two other kingdoms, however it was suddenly stopped by an embargo from the other two kingdoms. No one is sure why.

Yes the map was made in Civ 4. Take the terrains you see on the map for a grain of salt, they will be changing.

Total Map Area: ~650,000 square miles
Total Land Area: ~280,000 square miles (43% land)
Total Land Under Kingdom of Amular and Talfor Regime: ~176,000 square miles

@ Alzar:

Ok, you have a good base for a background there. Let's see if we can flesh that out a bit. Is there a reason why he feels rules should be valued more? What brought him to wanting to be a paladin, and was there any struggles he had adjusting to the new life style? He's going to be level 5, so he's had some adventure and experience, what has he gone through recently that's shaped his life? Also, you need to pick 2 traits. If you're not sure what they here check here: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/traits. That should help you flesh out your background.

Your build looks good, though 10 con may be a bit rough, but not much can be done with that since you're an elf. You could offset that by picking up toughness at some point.

It would be Perform (oratory)

@ garabbott:

Strong build there, I've always liked ninjas. Can't wait to see the back story.

@ Yix:

Looks like the back story needs to be rewritten a bit to fit your role at the Schola Scientiae (mages college). However the concept seems cool, I have this image in my mind of this old cat cuddling up with me.
If you keep the history the same where you started out in sort of an underworld, I'd like see a good transition between seedy underbelly and a father figure in the College.

Build looks strong, though I'll have to see the later levels to get a better idea. Also, drop your starting charisma a bit. I'd prefer your starting charisma wasn't higher than 16, then +2 racial, +1 age, then you can get your +1 level to have 20.

NEW CAMPAIGN INFO
Crafting Homebrew Items: If it is not on the pregenerated list of magic items, you, or another PC controlled character, will have to craft it yourself. You can't craft your starting items, so as far as this first adventure goes, you won't be able to craft homebrew items because time is of the essence. At a later time it may be useful, if this group sticks around that long, though I'd suggest someone taking leadership at 7th level, getting a wizard cohort and giving him all the crafting feats.

You can post your character info here, or make an alias. You can just link to your alias if you want, that way you can delete him/her if you don't make it.

This is play by post.

For those new to play by post, here is an excellent guide, that I would prefer the players to use: DHs Guide to Play By Post Gaming

NEW WORLD INFO
The continent the kingdoms are on looks generally like asia, though no where near as big. The size is roughly equal to California, Iraq, or Sweden (which ever sizing you understand better). They each take a half of the continent.

Feel free to write out a noble family and what their role is in the kingdom, and I will figure out a suitable benefit for the trait.

The "Insurance Policy" is to take care of any unforeseen problems that may come up. However you want to work that is fine, though some type of a cover story may be a good idea.

NEW WORLD INFO
Weather/geography: It has a wide array of different terrains and climates. Their is no Tundra in the continent, so the only extremely harsh cold conditions would be on mountains. I haven't gotten to much into that part though.

Good languages to have are elven and dwarven, though any of the languages of the core races will be useful.

@entropy priest is a good choice, armiger seems pretty powerful, but I can work with it if needed.

NEW INFO
The current kings are human, however they have advisers from the different races. Elves are highly respected in the political department from their many years of experience and their ability to look at things abstractly. Both Talfor and Amular's top advisor is an elf
Talfor has a large mountain region, where most the dwarves in this continent live, and is a major driver of Talfor's economy. Thus Talfor has a high up dwarven advisors.
Amular has a large population of gnomes, that were driven out by the dwarves some time ago. They ended up starting an engineering school that is almost as famous as the Schola Scientiae (the name of the mages college). Many dwarves grudgingly go to the school because it is the best for engineering. Thus, Amular has a head engineer gnome.

I should clarify that only applies for core races. They may not be as trusting of a goblin or some of the stranger races.
