Logan's first shot soars just past the shadowy figure holding up the grate, but the second shot elicits a satisfying grunt of pain. The small creature drops the grate and points a rod of some sort at Logan.
1d20+7=12 vs. Will Logan feels a stinging sensation as a glowing ray strikes him and the world goes dark. 2d6+1=9 and Logan is blind, save ends.
Meanwhile a larger, more human figure pushes the grate off the hole and shouts, "hey, why did you drop the bloody thing." Seeing the approaching heroes he says "oh" and reaches for his sword.
Jake is up.
Map I tried the spreadsheet thing, but it did not really work for me either. I also tried using autorealm, but could not figure out a way to save it in a usable format. Hope this helps.
Edit: You are entering from the area behind the blacksmith shop.
I don't know if this helps Erik, but the two major religions in Riddleport are Cayden Cailean and Callistra.
I don't have a scanner and have not been able to find a good on-line mapping utility. If anyone can help with that it would be great.
Yrenn wrote: DM, what do you think about each player pre-rolling a set of initiatives? Over in Pat512's games it's working pretty well. Could you explain a little more? I'm not sure I understand what you mean.
Okay, here is the order for initative:
Logan
the gatekeeper
Jake
Elmo
Yrenn
the shadowy figures
Ba'az
Go ahead and roll your attack Logan.
Jake and Elmo recognize the girl from around town but have never been properly introduced. Since two of you are initiating combat actions, I'm going to need initative rolls.
Invisible Castle is the best die rolling site I have found. If you want to use it, great. If not I have learned that the best way is to just trust your players. If you want to roll dice at home and post the results, then do so by all means.
Yes, you can begin to gather the materiels.
Ba'az, Jake, Elmo, and Logan arrive in time to see three small shaodowy figures pulling at an attractive blonde woman. They seem to be trying to drag her toward a drainage grate wich is being held open by a fourth creature.
Yrenn can see several people rushing towards the sound of the screams. At least one is a dragonborn dressed in gleaming chainmail and weilding a falchion
The one from the PHB.
Yrenn
Are you guys still interested in making a go of this game? If so let me know by Saturday.
Raoh
Ba'az
Jake and Elmo
Yrenn
Logan

Again, more interrested with the the fighter than the cleric. Yes, I will allow the variant fighter or cleric.
Okay, in the way of background, Riddleport is a wild town in a wild land. It is a haven for pirates and people looking to start their lives over. Mostly it would be left to it's own devices except for two things.
One is the mysterious Cyphergate which looms of the city. This ancient and mysterious rune covered arch spans the mouth of the city's harbor and attracts scholars and sages from all over Golorian looking to solve it's mysteries. The other is a more recent phenomenon that the locals call the Blot. This dark spot hovers in the sky above the city like a shadowy eye.
The city is currently abuzz about the "Cheat the Devil and Take his Gold" gambling competion. Marking the grand reopening of the Gold Goblin, this is the biggest, richest contest the city has ever seen. Whether you are in town to study the Cyphergate, research the Blot, or win big at the Gold Goblin, you are sure to find excitement and adventure in Riddleport.
The terrain is rocky plains, similar to what you would see in the Dakotas. The riders seem like they are in a bit of a hurry, since you are riding at a normal pace and are not kicking up a dust cloud like the one you see. Also they are too spread out to be a trade caravan.
Snaggletooth could be fun. I have a kobold named Beppo that tends to pop up in my games.
Well Rev? Are you in?
waves hand in the air Friday will do fine.
As a present to those of you still making characters, I got a copy of Martial Power and Adventurer's Vault today. You may use that as well as the other books. If the rest of you want to reconsider some of your choices, that's cool to.
Okay so far we have:
Ba'az-Dragonborn Paladin
Jake Nimbletoes- Halfling Cleric
Yrenn- Eladrian Wizard
We are still waiting on the other two players and we will get started. One thing I do want to address, I would like everyone to use Invisible Castle for die rolls. I like it and I have found it easy to use.

Please excuse the dumb look on my face. I'm new to 3.5 rules from 2e and although I have read familiarized myself with the Pathfinder Beta rules (through Chapter 11, Spells; all of the player material basically), I don't recall reading about traits. I'm guessing that this is something touched on in the Second Darkness supplements or in the campaign setting hardcover. Is there a page online that lists some traits? If not, will my character be at a disadvantage if she does not take a trait?
Thanks for you patience and sympathy. ;P
Newbily yours,
Floppy. Traits are something that came out with the Second Darkness Player's Guide. They are basically little quirks for your character that don't do a whole lot. One person described them as being half a feat. I don't know of any place online that actually lists them, but they are not anything that your character will be disadvantaged by not having.
That is what it looks like. However, only the paladin and the archer are set in stone.
As you continue to debate who will go first, the cloud continues to approach. Soon you can pick out the figures of mounted riders on the horizon.
Uathach of Iomedae wrote: so how many traits are you allowing? 1 or 2 or more? Only one unless you take the Extra Traits feat.
Okay, time to answer a few questions.
1) Anything that has been published for Pathfinder is allowable. That includes traits, material from the Campaign Setting, anything that Jason has explicitly posted for playtest, etc.
2)Shield Mastery and Two Weapon Defense would not stack. Two Weapon Defense is predicated on using two weapons, using a shield as a weapon negates it's effectiveness as a shield for the round that you do so. Therefore you would not be able to use feats that rely on using the shield as a shield.
3) I set the starting gold at 150 for everyone, because that is the standard used by the Pathfinder Society.
4) Hit points is max hit die plus Con modifier.
5) All the races I listed are EL 0 for my campaign. The buff that Pathfinder gives the core races is enough that it effectively negates one effective level in my opinion.
6) I don't mind if you have read the aventures beforehand, so long as you don't act on knowledge that your character would not know.
Nice.
Standard hit die plus Con bonus for starting hit points.
Okay, let's get started. We will be using Method 2 for generating attributes. Everything from the PHB is legal. 1st level characters. Races from the MM and FRPG are also allowed, with my approval. Swordmage is allowed as a class, if you wish to use it. Material from Martial Power are currently off limits as I do not have the book yet. Any other questions, please post them here.
Okay, here are the details. Character generation is going to be point buy, using 20 points. Any Beta classes and races are allowed, as well as tieflings and assimirs. Classes from splat books are at my discretion, so please ask first before you use on. 1st level characters. 150 gp to equip your character. Anything else ask.
The cloud could be caused by a duststorm, or it could be caused by a group of mounted riders. From this distance you can't tell.
The first day's ride is very uneventful. You make small talk and take the opportunity to get to know one another. Much the same is the case on the morrning of the second day. However, about mid-day you see a dark cloud rising up from the horizon.
