The beginnings of a plan: since mass-releasing the prisoners will probably alert the citadel to our presence we can have our backup team (including Hazl now) prep the weapons and gear for the prisoners, but not hit the Enter key until we signal them. That way we can advance towards the Wishing Engine and when we start a firefight the backup team breaks everyone out--and then Khaim has to deal with two emergencies instead of just one.

Might be worth putting Uzmat there as well, to make sure they can hold out against the Legion counterattack

Do we know all the various council principals and associates, at least generally?

Marius listens closely as Kela and Gregor trade gossip about the city's troubles, an expression of polite interest and concern on his face as he considers the implications of a plague of evil dreams. "Goodman Hamble, I'm sorry to hear that your niece has been afflicted. Has she offered any details on the nature of these dreams? From what little I've heard, it seems those affected all report similar experiences which is unusual to say the least. It may be a clue to unraveling the problem, however. This associate who's absent today--who is it? Are they similarly affected?"

As their party is allowed in the the council chambers, Marius' gaze sweeps the room out of long habit, counting guards and noting all the doors and windows. He offers Earl Merkondus an amiable smile which he then turns on the councillors along with a respectful bow.

"My lords and ladies of the Council, I thank you for this audience. I am Lord Marius Erallan, here with my companions to represent the interests of Crown Princess Eutropia. I am sorry to hear that Baron Kustios is indisposed, but rest assured that we are here to assist in any way you may require--these troubles will soon be but a memory, and Yanmass will return to its prosperous, happy state."

If it seemed appropriate, if she doesn't seem to be heavily outclassing him, Marius would offer to spar with the Crown Princess during one of her rapier practice sessions.

Beyond an amused eyebrow raised the first time Faenia Kela corrects him, Marius makes no comment on the latter's method acting--though he does take a peek at her book on Yanmass at one point when she sets it down. He spends the trip consulting a map of the prefecture and re-reading every scrap of information Martella was able to provide them, turning the problem of her missing agent over in his mind.

"Grand Duke Heskillar does good work," he remarks offhandedly as he watches the mountains outside the carriage window. "He's a gifted diplomat smack in the middle of a crowd of hotheads and honor-feuding fools--I think he'd get along marvelously with the Princess, but his prefecture is the seat of the Horse, natural allies of the High Strategos. Our work in Meratt County was hardly unimportant, but I daresay the stakes here do feel higher."

If Marius' eyebrows could climb any higher they'd fly off his forehead. "Ah, the Baron talks now. Just the thing to keep our profile low in Yanmass." He gives Barcos a quizzical look. "What exactly are you feeding him?" The look shifts to Lotti and her familiar. "And what's this about your cat? Wobblekins, have you been holding out on us?"

The days ahead of their departure for Yanmass are ones of logistical planning and persuading Onora Piscum to take up her recently-shed role of Tribune once again. "It's only for a while, I've got money and instructions socked away for the next several months' work--that should get us through the winter and I fully expect to be able to return before then. You'll hardly have to do any extra work! And with the Princess' retinue based nearby there will be additional resources and protections at hand."

There's no answer to your calls, not directly, but Ketra hears Norreth before she sees him--hunched over in the shadows behind one of the broken display cases, hands grasping and clenching as he mutters and curses.

"...creeping, creeping...I can hear them, hear them in the walls, in the floors, they whisper vilest blasphemies why won't they just shut up shut up shut UP!"

Snatching up a handful of broken glass shards Norreth darts forward to hurl them at you. The handful of debris misses you all handily, but the movement brings the halfing out of the shadows into dreadful clarity. His hand was cut where he grabbed the glass, but instead of blood black inky shadows leak from his hands. Worse still are his eyes--or rather, the black pits where his eyes should be, whose barest glimpse freezes your blood and chills your souls.

Religion DC18:

Norreth Albo is dead. What stands before you is a bodak, a twisted and misanthropic husk driven by profound emptiness, sorrowful longing, and a vengeful hatred of all life.

Rose:

"So she doesn't remember the times when you're...in control. But she knows that you exist as her--her other half," Marius knuckles his eyes and takes a deep breath, then another deeper one. "Okay...okay. I'm ready." He raises his head again and pivots on the bed, letting his feet rest on the cool wood as he meets Velvet's gaze.

"Miss Arlandt--no, Valery. I know we haven't seen eye to eye often, I daresay we don't even like each other. But...I love Rose, and I hope we can find a way to make this work, for her sake." He takes another deep breath and nods at the other woman to signal his readiness. He goes very still, shoulders tense and breath held, watching her like his life depends on it. Waiting for the moment when his Rose is back again.

When he sees that moment of change, he finally remembers to breathe and he doesn't hold back the relieved smile, just a bit tinged with sadness. He reaches out to take her hand in his. "Welcome back, my love."

Marius speaks little at the dinner with the princess, save to offer a pleased smile and nod at Barcos' and Faenia's contributions. House Erallan had been in Eutropia's camp for years, its sons and daughters were all at her disposal and she knew it. He does accept the ownership share of the Betony Estate with a gracious bow--truly, he had long looked forward to contributing his piece to the revitalization of Taldor, but the depth of feeling seeing Stachys restored had inspired in him still caught him off guard. He found himself unable to seriously countenance giving it up. As dinner adjourns he formally shakes Barcos hand to welcome him to their ranks now that it was official, and at the first opportunity snags Raesilia for a long walk.

+ + + + +

"Lady Jarlborn," he calls in greeting, catching Faenia in the hall in a rare ebb moment the following day. "Just the person I was hoping to see! I trust your meeting with the Crown Princess went well. I had the opportunity to tell Goodman Barcos last night, but I wanted to welcome you to, well, our little group. It seems we'll be working closely together to further our collective interest--and, well, I have a gift for you." He reaches into his coat, withdrawing a small golden ring, the interior polished to a smooth shine of a lighter shade than its pristine exterior.

"This is a little something we picked up during our explorations. It's a diplomat's delight, enchanted to make sweet words sweeter and a silver tongue brighter. I think of all of us, you're one of the best equipped to make effective use of its gifts. And if you're still cautious of openly declaring yourself your father's daughter, well, let us just say it can help with that as well." He grins, flipping the ring like a coin and catching it before proffering it to the skald. "Welcome to the team."

Does Eutropia have any bodyguards amongst her entourage?

Dressed in his best, Marius greets the Crown Princess with full formality and welcomes here home to Birdsong Palace. He would never presume to give her a tour, but he does accompany her at a respectful distance to answer any questions she might have--at least, until Martella calls him away for debriefing.

Martella wrote:
"...how are you all doing? Is pastoral life to your liking?"

"More than I expected. It is...very gratifying, to build something healthy and prosperous and see that reflected in the people around you. I regret that Stachys was allowed to go to seed in the first place, but I find the work of restoring it to be greatly satisfying. I hope to repeat the trick across all of Taldor before we're through."

Faenia wrote:
"...but they passed his test.” She smiles at Marius slightly, obviously referring to the party, ”for the most part.”

Marius offers an eyebrow raised in amused curiosity, but doesn't otherwise respond.

"Martella, I know you've already read the report, but I wish to reiterate that I find the information we've uncovered about Duke Panivar Lotheed to be very concerning. A powerful wizard with cause for a grudge against us would be bad enough, but he may not be merely a man, and these experiments on recreating the departed prince's soul is alarming in the extreme. There is also the matter of his...wife. I strongly suggest she be sent away from the palace, as she set off Lady Mokei's paladin senses."

"I don't--that's not...you're not lying," He almost whispers. He feels his chest tighten and it's suddenly a struggle to control his breathing as he drops his head into his hands. "I don't understand, how can there be two of you? Is she...here? Does she know about you the way you know about her? Was there ever really a heist? If, if you're part of her, then who taught her all the--?"

He makes a sudden motion with his hand, as though sweeping away his own questions. Lifting his head, there are tears in his eyes. "I want to talk to Rose. I don't know what's happening, but if this isn't a trick I want to talk to her."

He watches Valery carefully, meeting her gaze and listening in growing bafflement. Questions whirl around his head--prank? Inebriation? Possession? Valery didn't *seem* out of sorts, but that only deepened the mystery.

Velvet wrote:

"...I see..." Marius replies slowly, then snorts and shakes his head. "Actually, no, I don't. I do not understand the reasons for your apology, or what you were angry about, or what myself or any of the others might be to blame for, or the extended metaphor about velvet that feels heavily laden with solemn meaning but has utterly passed me by. And I certainly don't know what you being Rose 'after a fashion' means! You said it would all make sense shortly, so if you could skip to that part I'd count it a kindness."

Rose:

Bartleby's unexpected surrender caught Marius by surprise--deep down, he supposed, he hadn't expected the count to be reasonable. The elation of being proven wrong, and the bloodless victory that accompanied that, couldn't be dampened even by the vital tedium of paperwork, meetings, the dispatching of runners and organizing of local nobles to swear oaths of loyalty to Eutropia. It's almost--almost--enough to keep him from wondering where Rose is and what danger she might be in and whether her own mission had seen success. He struggles to compartmentalize this roil of emotions, and the Erallan scion retires to his room, drained and worried, to attempt a fitful sleep at the end of each day. Fitful enough that even the soft click of a key in the lock startles him to wakefulness.

"Who--?" he sits up, eyes widening in surprise. "Miss Arlandt! I don't--are you--?" Are you here to kill me? Or the other thing? Gods, which of those would be worse? He pauses, taking in her lack of armor or obvious weapons. "Is something the matter?"

Taldan law owes much to Abadaran teachings like those of Saint Mada the Smith: "The sovereign is completely discharged from a duty for which no mortal wisdom or knowledge could ever be sufficient; the duty of superintending the property of private people, and of directing it towards the employments most suitable to the interest of the society. Thus let each dispose of their property as they will without fear of punishment or interference, for this right is sacred in Abadar's eyes."

"It's true enough that Dominus II appointed the Lotheeds as stewards, but he could not do so under his authority as Grand Prince. The Palace of Birdsong was a Stavian holding before they become Taldor's royal House--should another House be chosen to tomorrow," Marius' tone conveys that this is unlikely in the extreme. "This property would still belong to House Stavian. Dominus II acted in his capacity as Stavian patriarch, and that authority now rests with his descendent. So you see, in these halls Eutropia Stavian is the only name that matters."

Answer Cellion's question here rather than filling up the Gameplay thread. So first thing we have a ton of loot & logistics to sort, which I assume will be a sort of montage thing along with salvaging what we can from the Breath of Embers.

Ordyt will busy himself with anything and everything that needs doing, although he doesn't feel comfortable getting involved in anassanoi internal politics. But he'll help organize supply distribution, setting up medical stations, sorting and debriefing captured Legion personnel, etc etc.

I've got Ordyt mostly leveled up, still picking out spells but I'm pretty certain I want Mind Thrust IV. Also on the lookout for some gear upgrades--maybe some new weapons/armor, maybe some cybernetics. It'll depend on what our $$$ situation looks like.

Anyone wish to tally up the loot? I can do it again but it might take me a few days to put it all together.

The door is heavy and its hinges grown, but Ketra is able to open it slowly and isn't greeted by immediate shouts of alarm. What she sees is a wide long chamber with a high ceiling, supported by two rows of columns while the wall shows a few partial murals of knights wearing Sarenrae's symbol slaying various monsters.

As a local, Ketra realizes immediately where she is--the Bastion of Light, a temple of Sarenrae just outside the town. It was sacked along with Roslar's Coffer during the raid by Twisted Nail orcs, but wasn't rebuilt along with the rest of the town. It then became the lair of a hulking monster called a "red reaver" until a few years ago, when Pathfinders killed the reaver and cleared out the Bastion. There were always murmurs and musings about trying to get the Bastion rebuilt and rededicated, but nothing ever came of it.

"Ah, Titus. Taking a break from shooting unarmed commoners, I see." He raises a calming hand to Barcos, though he's not displeased with the backup. Reaching into his coat, he produces the letter of denunciation. "Dame Hellebore is right, fighting us is a bad idea. This here is a letter of censure signed by every noble of Meratt County save the Count himself." He return the letter to his coat before anyone gets any stupid ideas. "Meratt has lanquished under the Lotheeds' negligent care for decades now--new leadership is needed, for the sake of the county and country alike. We even have the Duchess' blessing. Bartleby really doesn't have a leg to stand on--legally, politically, or morally--and that means you have even less than that, Titus. Surrender your weapon and be banished from the county, or we enforce House Stavian's claim by more direct means." He gives Dame Hellebore a significant glance. "There's nothing to gain by fighting us, and a great deal to be gained by cooperating."

Titus is clearly not going to be cooperative, so I'd like to aim the Diplomacy at Hellebore if possible.

Rapping smartly upon the door, Marius waits for it to be answered before stepping into the guard room as though he were their commanding officer on a surprise inspection.

"Good evening, thank you. Apologies for the lateness of the hour, but momentous changes are afoot in Meratt County and I thought it best if you were informed directly." After a brief examination of the room like any readiness check, Marius nods as though satisfied and adopts an at-ease stance. "As you may or may not be aware, the Birdsong Palace and its grounds are the direct property of House Stavian. Effective immediately, the Crown Princess Eutropia Stavian is reasserting her family claim and will be taking up residence here quite soon. We are here to ascertain that all is safe and made ready for her arrival, at which point the County will be directly administered by House Stavian going forward. Count Lotheed will be informed of these changes presently."

He holds eye contact with the guards' commanding officer. "As for yourselves, your cooperation is appreciated but your presence is not required. You'll be paid out a sizeable bonus in recompense for the disruption to your schedules, and in all likelihood returned to your posts once the Crown Princess has settled in. Dismissed."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (15) + 14 = 29

Marius is waiting for any of the cleverer guards to say "oh s+!! is this a coup?" instead of opening with that; the really clever ones will realize and play along. Otherwise he's leaning on their habits of military obedience & his rather ephemeral authority as Eutropia's representative to get his way.

As the swarm of maggots floods into the room the situation is looking dire--but by cunning stratagem or stroke of insight, Garret has them right where he wants them. The fireball that fills the chamber burns the halfling badly despite his inherent resistance, but the Chorus by far gets the worse end of the bargain. With a shriek of impotent fury the maggots die in their hundreds, that horrid song cut off forevermore.

I probably have brain damage after all this, Ordyt thinks groggily has he fights back to consciousness yet again. "Mari," he chuckles weakly. "We've gotta stop meeting like this." Ignoring the healing serum--he appreciates the thought, but Ordyt is an experienced enough healer to know the terrible extent of his own injuries--he reaches out for his rifle and spies Flint, looking as torn up as him.

"Get up, Captain," he urges, infusing his words with divine energy. "Your people need you."

Though being called 'bossman' does earn a raised brow from Marius, he keeps his focus on the goal. "A fight should be avoided if at all possible--until we've presented our formal denunciation, at least. Besides Count Lotheed has a reputation as a capable spell-blade, none of us should underestimate his fighting ability. Subterfuge is less risky, but not without risk at all--the aforementioned Seneshcal, Gul Guisarme, is a capable and suspicious head of security. I don't think he's a bad sort really, but I don't think we've done a damn thing to rattle his loyalty to his lord either. Be careful, all of you. We're so close now."

As plans are made to elicit information from the servants of Birdsong Palace, Marius devotes himself to crafting the letter that will form their legal shield for this little coup--and collecting the signatures that will complete it. He strives for a forceful but legalistic tone, invoking the obligations of nobility and Bartleby's many failures in maintenance. He also repeatedly refers to the property not even properly belonging to the Lotheeds which only compounds their neglect. After several reworks and consultations with his agents & allies he finally feels he has something suitable, he locks it in his writing desk and rises.

It's full dark by now--an appropriate time for the intrigue and spycraft he was up to now. Shrugging on his coat, Marius quietly slips out of the manor and down into Stachys, to the recently-completed shrine. At this hour it was dark and empty, so he lets himself in and slowly walks a circuit of the shrine until he reaches a very particular tile in the floor. Alone in the darkness, Marius sinks to his knees begins to pray, sharing his gratitude for the good work he and his companions have been allowed to do here, his fears for what good wrong in the final steps against Bartleby, and that Kalinahat watch over his Rose in her own heist.

I think Bartleby is a man who is simply accustomed to having wealth and power at the expense of those below him on the social ladder--it's a common affliction here and abroad, to consider such arrangements the 'natural order of things'.
