What would be the effect of allowing players to make prepared casters spontaneous? Would it mess up balance entirely? For which classes would it have the greatest effect? And can someone point me in the direction of the 3.5 book that had something on this?

Thanks muchly

I realize I have a rather specific request here, so bear with me and feel free to disregard any of these parameters:

I was thinking a rogue/sorcerer mix. Very similar to the beguiler, but not precisely. I want it to be much more viable for melee combat. It's also inspired by several other things, among them the Mesmer from Guild Wars and Nightcrawler from X-Men. I wanted a dex-based (melee, but not necessarily) character (similar to skirmisher, duelist, etc.), who could also use magic (but was limited to the illusion and enchantment schools).

I originally was thinking about making this up myself, but I possess no experience in doing so whatsoever. But here's what I came up with:

d8
fast will and reflex saves
rogue weapon proficiencies
sneak attack
bard spell progression (based on which ability?)
potentially a mechanic similar to the Dimensional Assault feat chain (teleporting while attacking). This may warrant an entirely different class though, like a teleporting specialist. I'm not sure if I want to synthesize the two

Unglaublich = unbelievable ... (the verb glauben = to believe) yay German! :)

Character class will play a large role. Oracles of the Lore mystery, for example, can use Charisma to replace Dexterity for AC and Reflex saves.

Also, can you specify if you intend to allow 3.5 material? I believe there were a number of feats like this in 3.5, but we should avoid those if you're not interested.

I didn't intend to use 3.5 stuff, but if that would be a good supplement then yeah, sure. Also, I'm not looking for a specific class. I'm just looking for a general loadout that would help accomplish thing kind of thing. Multiclassing (gratuitously) is acceptable.

There's a whole bunch of feats/abilities that allow you to either switch out mental ability score bonuses for physical ones or just add them on. Things like the monk's wisdom bonus, the focused shot feat, etc. Can you (1) add some other abilities that produce similar effects and (2) comment on whether or not it's viable to make a martial character with this idea?

I've found that players are often fantastic writers and story crafters. They're passionate and creative artists. Yet they are seldom tasked with applying their skills. So here's your task: describe your all-time favorite character you have ever played. You can include an encounter, a situation, etc. - whatever it is that made this character awesome. Go to town adventure-friends!

Is there a revelation/mystery that grants an oracle smite evil?

Ok, thank you everyone. This was quite helpful

You can gain armor proficiency just fine. Take a level of fighter (or whatever) or spend some feats. It's just that being proficient in armor doesn't let you avoid arcane spell failure chance.

Right, that was the underlying question. I just phrased it poorly.

Finally, is there any such concern for divine casting? I realize there is no divine casting spell failure chance, but are there any other complications I should be aware of (concerning divine casting and armor class)?

Does an wizard (or any caster for that matter) incur the normal spell failure chance if he is multiclassed in say fighter for example?

Also, instead of multiclassing, could you take the (Medium/Heavy) Armor Proficiency feat to negate the spell failure chance?

I'm actually playing a very similar build right now. I'm using a light crossbow but with the explosive missile discovery. Right now, my alchemist is the highest dpr member of our group. My build uses cogntagons to buff int, which adds damage to bombs and any missile (such as crossbow bolts), but only if you take the focused shot feat. Having done so, my character does crossbow + bomb + 2x int mod for damage.

I would recommend going straight alchemist right now; the rogue wouldn't be that helpful really.

Hope this helps!

I made a combo like that using cognatogens once. I buffed my Int a bunch and and used the explosive missile discovery to strap it to a crossbow bolt. I also took focused shot so my bolt/bomb would do bolt damage + bomb damage + int mod (from focused shot) + int mod (from bombs). Oh and plus splash damage.

Ha was a rather effective character. Quite a fun background too

About halfway down. Happy summoning :)

For whatever reason -I didn't know this happened- it's putting a space in the link. Take that out and it should work fine.

Ok thanks for your help. Is there no way to share muta/cognatogens then?

1. Can someone please explain the uses of the "Infuse Mutagen" Discovery? Does it allow you to share your mutagens with your party members just like Infusion does for extracts or is it limited to just allowing you to hold multiple mutagens at once?

2. A question for DMs: would you allow your players to use the True Mutagen Grand Discovery for Cognatogens instead of Mutagens?

Thanks,
