About Chalkou

Background:

Like many gnolls, Chalkou's past is checkered. Spotted, perhaps. He was raised in a den alongside the pack's other pups, and learned all the traditional gnoll arts, most of them violent. But he was smarter than most, and rose above simple brutality. He discovered that humans and the like could be convinced to give you coin for things you would do anyway, and left his tribe for the metropolis of Katapesh, where he fell in with a band of gnoll mercenaries. Life was good for several years, he even trained a pet hyena that fought alongside him. For a while his band ran security for Alkenstar gun-runners, then started running guns themselves. But then came the ambush. Most of his unit was killed, he and his beloved pet giggles were maimed, but escaped. Limping into Alkenstar, he used most of his hard-earned mercenary wealth to pay a clockwork crafter to build prostheses for himself and Giggles. Since then they have subsisted on small time guard work, while he tries to track down the responsible party.So far, he has little more than a name to go on-Ambrost Mugland, one of the city's most corrupt, and most slippery, financiers.

Appearance:

Chalkou looks like most other gnolls, with spotted fur, rounded ears, a prominent muzzle and teeth. Two things stand out about him: one is his red leather armor, which he allows people to believe is stained with many years of blood. The other is his brass and steel clockwork arm, complete with viciously-clawed hand. Since the attack he has been practicing with it almost nonstop, and while it sometimes seems to have a mind of its own, he says that he now prefers it to any other weapon, and rarely fights with anything else.

Giggles is much the same: she looks much like a normal hyena, except for her extensive mechanical reconstruction. She lost both front legs and her lower jaw in the attack that almost killed them, and has since had powerful, spring-and-gear driven replacements grafted on. Chalkou apparently speaks her language, and claims that she feels better than ever. Few observers want to find out exactly what that means.
