@roger looks like we're going to shut it down, we've lost two of the players in the meantime. Thanks for your willingness to GM, but we're going to put it to bed.

All right. At this point, it looks like we're down 2 players and a GM. I say we call it off. I'll be keeping an eye out for another RoR:AE, and if I see one, I'll be sure to let y'all know.

Fair?

male (HP 11/11 | AC 19 | T 11 | FF 18 | CMD 15 | F +3 | R +1 | W +0 | Init +3 | Per +0) Varisian Fighter 1

poked him a couple days ago, it's about time for another - crazy gnomes tend to be very effective pokers :)

so - recruitment out for about a week. One nibble, one hit. The one hit we've got, it seems we're likely to throw back.

I'm thinking either we give rogerGilbert a time-boxed opportunity to succeed (say, 3 weeks, after which we decide to continue or disband), or we call it a day and fold up the tent.

Thoughts?

male (HP 11/11 | AC 19 | T 11 | FF 18 | CMD 15 | F +3 | R +1 | W +0 | Init +3 | Per +0) Varisian Fighter 1

In some PM discussion with nO417, it looks like he's a no-go.

Anyone have an opportunity to check out some of rogerGilbert's posts?

@gilbert - original gameplay thread was 115 posts over 20 days. A quick scan shows GM input once per day or two, with a couple bursts of 3-4 back-and-forths (looks like both parties were online concurrently).

There was also a fair amount of inter-character interaction - given a bit of license, this group isn't shy about painting in the details on a broadly drawn canvas. It also seems folks aren't shy about calling for GM input when the details have an impact.

So - we'll adapt to pace. But if you leave us alone for too long, don't be surprised if we've co-opted the serving staff, and hocked the silver to the duchess next door, by way of the jeweler uptown that you hadn't realized moonlights as a fence. But no worries - if it was important that the butler is intensely loyal, we're happy to see him scourge the scullery maid down the boulevard for betraying the trust of the household :)

And this is utopia27's character. Chadron's a pretty solid, basic sword-and-board fighter. Chadron does suffer from a slight excess of bonhomie. A big, extroverted, jovial jock. Lord help us.

corrected, with deepest apologies :)

and thanks for the bump on the recruiting thread.

ALLCON -

I have one response in hand: nO417. He/She/It appears to be relatively new, but has a decent message count under one alias - probably the first healthy game nO417 got hooked into. I haven't had time to read through any of his/her/its posts yet, but will in the next day or two.

Thoughts?

Also - nO417 doesn't have the AP. I can't fix that for RoR AE (many other APs, but not that edition of RoR). Any help on that?

Finally - if anyone wanted to post to the recruiting thread, it would help put it back near the top (and not be me self-promoting the thread...)

We now return to your normally scheduled freeze-frame of a berserk gnome coated in goblin blood racing through Sandpoint.

ALLCON -

I've started up a thread in 'recruitment', advertising for a new GM. I've got specific verbage below, with a link to the actual thread. I'm planning to put this out in a few of my other groups (in case anyone's harboring a yen to GM). I'd encourage y'all to also promote forward this way, and maybe ask your fellow players to take it viral.

We have a great group of 6 players assembled (and started off) for a Rise of the Runelords (Anniversary Edition) game.

We had a GM, but he has disappeared on us. We believe this is a medical issue - and we all understand (though we're a bit worried). It's been 2 months now since our old GM last posted on the boards anywhere, and as a group we've decided to either draft a new GM, or give up the ghost.

This is a good group - great characters, good interaction, good pace.

If you've considered running an RoR game, please take this as an opportunity to have a proven group, with lists and logistics and whatnot already set up.

Here is the original game campaign group, the gameplay thread, and also FYI there was significant RP in the initial recruitment thread.

Please post any response or discussion in the recruiting thread

Did we want to recruit for a new GM through recruitment? I know some folks had volunteered to stand in, but I think those are exactly the folks most interested in the characters they're playing :) I could be wrong about that though.

We're coming up on 2 months - it's probably time to re-launch or retire.

Well, I missed my own 10/15 deadline. I did just send around some PMs to folks that didn't respond in thread. I'll let y'all know when I hear.

Also... Did someone have the capacity to make e-mail contact with Ryuko?

Chadron blinks in surprise as the fiesty little goblin continues to struggle, despite the solid clout from the unknown participant in the melee. Having a handle on the little spellcaster, Chadron determines to emulate a constricter snake, and just squeeze. "Can some please be ready to tie her up when she's stopped wiggling so much?" Chadron sounds workmanlike, but still cheerful.

Revelry. Chadron revels. He romps. He scampers and skips and flies with the butterflies. But all in his head. Chadron has a meat pastie in his hand, half way to his mouth. As the butterflies descend, he freezes. He stands rapt, with an expression of wonder on his face. And he stands frozen, unwilling to break the moment, or endanger the butterflies with his bulk and strength. Introspective revelry.

"The Rusty Dragon would suit, it'll allow me to slip into something more comfortable as well. I do actually own clothes that do not involve clanking metal platees. I think those other clothes are more appropriate for festival."

"I think the 'euphamism' would be plums. Blueberries would be more of an insult. So let's hope there aren't any shepherds hanging about to be insulted," Chadron drops Gudada a broad wink over Talliree's head. "So where are these pies that need eating? I see it's a very urgent matter, and we should all attend more to the pressing business than the double entendres."

Taking a second look at Gudada, "Say - weren't you trying to shave in public yesterday, with a few more blades than usual? It seems your fingers all came through the experience, but your whiskers as well." Shifting dialects smoothly, with a level gaze at Gaduda, "ეს იყო ძალიან კარგი შოუ"

Varisian:
"It was a very good show."

"That young gentleman is a tough act to follow! But I'll swallow my pride and make an effort," Chadron steps forward and pays his coins. He hefts the bean bags a bit, shrugs, and takes a bead on the target.

"Indeed quite an act to follow. Lad, you've well and truly bested my mark," Chadron gives the young gent an effusive bow. Chadron steps aside for the next contestant, but not too far.

Chadron waits until the game is underway, then asks the owner, "So, where did you collect those trophies? They're really quite impressive."

The shine is off Chadron for an eyeblink, then he turns smartly and heads off to the Festival.

'Work before play, so that makes it time to play. And far be it for a good son of Kurgess to turn down some friendly competition! Let's see if I can catch Thorfinn before he tosses all those goblins.'

And so determined, Chadron hies him off to the Goblin Toss.

Chadron spends the next half hour working through the crowd, shaking hands, grinning grins, until he locates the Sheriff Hemlock.
taking 20 on a Diplomacy(Gather Information), untrained: 21
Locating the Sheriff, Chadron waits for an opportune moment, then presses himself forward, "Excuse me, Sheriff Hemlock sir. My name is Chadron Land. I realize you've got a very busy day, so I'll be blunt. I'm looking for employment helping with today's crowds. I trained with the Bloodsworn Vale militia, and I've spent the better part of the last three months as bouncer with a traveling entertainment troupe. Your man there," indicating the guard from earlier, "reckons how I'm a stranger, and a foreigner to boot. He also says your guards have more work today than they can keep in hand." Chadron pauses for breath.

Chadron looks directly and frankly at the Sheriff, "I don't mean to tell you your job, but if you pair me with one of your old hands working crowds at the Cathedral, or entry at the city gates, you can free up one of your experienced men for work that needs a local eye. And at the same time, you can have your man keep an eye on 'that new foreign kid'," Chadron again pauses to draw breath. "My apologies for being direct. Partly it's my way, and partly I don't want to waste your time on such a busy day."

Diplomacy:
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
OOC: yep, he's going to get shot down. I apologize for consuming bandwidth with it. But Chadron is irrepressible and an optimist. He's not going to let a little thing like impracticality and good advice stand in the way of a project he's set himself on. Chadron's also not a fool, and he won't argue with Sheriff after the Sheriff Hemlock makes a decision.

male (HP 11/11 | AC 19 | T 11 | FF 18 | CMD 15 | F +3 | R +1 | W +0 | Init +3 | Per +0) Varisian Fighter 1

"That sounds like an excellent day. I will say a prayer for you to Kurgess and wish you his luck. I don't know what the local guard captain may have in store for me, but I'll look for you. And if nothing else, you must bunk with me tonight. I knew the lout you were drinking with was sleeping under the table, but I had no thought you didn't have a room. I'll see you at the Dragon this evening."

Turning the spotlight of his attention back to the guard, "Now where was that commanding officer I was to report to again, friend? Oh - and I'm Chadron - thanks for your help!" He said, clapping the gentleman on the shoulder.

Chadron beams around at both Thorfinn (who appears to be growing accustomed to Chadron's irrepresable manner), and the guard (who in addition to his earlier awake-too-early-and-harried expression, now appears a bit overwhelmed - somewhat to Thorfinn's amusement).

Diplomacy:
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
[ooc]OOC: well, that doesn't appear to have gone well

Seeing the glare back from the guard, Chadron takes a half step back, turns his hearty clap-on-the-shoulder into a brush-the-lint-from-your-shoulder-and-straighten-your-cloak motion. "Or perhaps I'll just walk with you a few steps farther on Thorfinn," edging around the guard, he strolls on with Thorfinn, "so.. don't suppose you see a guard captain around anywhere, eh?"

male (HP 11/11 | AC 19 | T 11 | FF 18 | CMD 15 | F +3 | R +1 | W +0 | Init +3 | Per +0) Varisian Fighter 1

Having had a lovely evening of wine, song, and tales, 'not neglecting the women, though they were in short supply last night,' Chadron woke early, geared up (weapons, armor, and shield, leaving the pack in his room), and headed towards the Festival. Making his way across the Dragon's common room, he saw Thorfinn preparing for the day. Remembering the epic drinking-under-the-table of the night before, Chadron couldn't help but be envious of Thorfinn's constitution.

"Ah - Thorfinn! Good morning! I'm off to see if the local guard will take on some extra help to manage the crowds and activities. Care to walk with me?"

Chadron strolls toward the Festival. As he's about to enter, he surveys the sign, and the guard at the edge of the square. 'Ah - games and competition - but work before play. Kurgess will be well honored today - and best served by well organized and safe competitions.'

"My good fellow - is there a guard captain or a sheriff hereabouts? I'm sure you all have more work than is comfortable on such a busy day, and I'd like to make my services available," Chadron says to the harried-looking guard.

@duilure - pish and tosh on your hiding. You just stand right here behind Chadron. That's what the big broad shield is there for - is for the sheltering of folks less martial. I'm not much on the whole insight, or stitchin' up of wounds, but I'm good for standing between bad folk and wizards and mages and such.

male (HP 11/11 | AC 19 | T 11 | FF 18 | CMD 15 | F +3 | R +1 | W +0 | Init +3 | Per +0) Varisian Fighter 1

Nah - being tall is good for seeing things. If things go really poorly, I think I can apply some of my large-animal veterinary skills. I've seen things birthing cattle you would not believe! But sewing up fence-torn sheep isn't that much different than patching together an arrow wound. Why, there was this time in the Vale, we were out with the militia, and the blue-crest goblins <...> and Larry, he had a few arrows in him; and my dad had us boil up some string, he got out his fish hook, and <...>. Once the swelling went down and he could sit again, he was almost as good as new!

[ooc]OOC: I'd volunteer to dip a couple levels of ranger (for skill points and some healing) or cleric/inquisitor/oracle (for some spells and magic item use), but all of that is WIS dependent, and that's just not Chadron's gig.

male (HP 11/11 | AC 19 | T 11 | FF 18 | CMD 15 | F +3 | R +1 | W +0 | Init +3 | Per +0) Varisian Fighter 1

alrighty then... looks like meta-gaming resolved :)

now there's a walk on the wild (dark?) side. Chadron will be saving that for a last resort, "No, really," wince, groan, clutch, "I'll be fine - my da always taught me to walk it off." <blanch>.

As Elloe says - within reason if anyone's got some decent healing skill, we can probably limp (and groan) along until we pull together enough cash to pick up some medical supplies. It would also probably be useful if some/several folk could Use Magical Devices cleverly. Chadron's not terribly magically inclined, but could probably eke a bit of charge out of his Varisian blood...

Thanks for the opportunity to play in this one - I look forward to it.

I think the post-timing discussion sounds great. I'm also up for taking the initial roleplay as canon.

@ryuko: Something that happened in a previous recruitment - the GM requested players' permission to adopt some of the non-chosen characters as recurring NPCs... I wonder if Zurich will consider himself lucky in choosing a 'less exciting' ruin to explore than whatever the future holds for us, or if he'll consider it judicious scholarship? Does Duilure need a rival academic? Or... does he fade off to a ruin rar west of town, where a tribe of rabid hobgoblins quietly (e.g. off-camera) cook him for lunch after looting his expedition?

Right - enough idle speculation. There's a recent graduate to drink to, then a festival to visit, and a temple to see dedicated. alons!

Chadron picks up the conversation with Zurich as though uninterrupted, "Then let us to the festival. I understand they're also dedicating a temple, though I haven't heard when. Congratulations on completing your studies."

"Perhaps it is that fate has been pushing us together. It was some months ago that I traveled through Korvosa. You're more resilient than I to have lived there for years, never mind managed to study. I couldn't find rest there, for fear I'd wear the wrong thing, or walk on the wrong lawn."

OOC: erp - edit to allow more bar scene in

As Zurich's surrounded by blue streamers of lights, "Oh my - pretty lights. Fans of yours here?"

Looking around the room to see who's interested, "Fireworks and celebrations indeed - I understand our friend here is in line for congratulations!"

Chadron grins at the newcomer, "We don't generally have servants where I come from, " glancing at the floating luggage, "of any sort. I'd be happy to walk with you towards lodging if your... valet... may wear out." After a short discussion with the bartender, Chadron heads towards where they keep the rooms at the Dragon. The bartender waves a pot-boy to guide the small procession towards rooms.

"My name's Chadron. I'm in town for a few days, from points west. I have reason to believe there may be some need for my services here, though my source wasn't very specific on what, or by whom. Yourself?"

Reaching the door of a room, Chadron opens it and sets about arranging his kit on a stool near the door. He leaves pack, helm, shield, bow, and spear in his room, though set for ready retrieval. Chadron looks for an ewer and basin - finding these, he splashes head and face refreshingly. He takes a moment longer washing his hands and drying. Still armed with sword and dagger, and armored, he exits, locks (and checks) the door, then heads back to the commons room. Underway, he gives Razorstorm's door a quick thump, "If you're still up for it, I'm to have some drink and comradeship. I hope to see you out shortly!" Chadron also thinks to himself, 'And maybe he's not in anymore. Ah well, talking to an empty room has seldom done any harm.'

"So Dairkal, a temple being dedicated as part of the festival, you say. Sounds fascinating - eventful."

"I'm still hoping to find a room - perhaps something in," gesturing at his expansive frame, "a 'big and tall' size? No offense to the excellent cuisine or al fresco dining experience - or the top-grade entertainment - but the chair is a bit tight."

"You say the Rusty Dragon may still have some rooms? Three streets down on the left?" Looking at Tandion and gathering together his gear, "I'm away to secure a bunk. Care to come along?"

And with that, Chadron left a tip, and trundled toward the Rusty Dragon. He notices, in a casual way, a motley collection of not-tall folks headed in the same direction.

Reaching the Rusty Dragon, Chadron strolls into the bar. He makes his way to the bar, and asks, "Can I arrange a room for a few days? This kit, " hefting his pack with bow, arrows, spear, and shield above and beyond basic traveling supplies, "has gotten a bit heavy. A wonderful halfling, name of Dairkal told me you might still have some rooms."

"Thandion - good to see you! I had safe enough travels. I traveled with groups in part, which is always more secure. Everywhere there are rumors of giants in the hills, goblin, orc, and Shoanti raids on settlements. But for all that, my journey was safe. Not uneventful," he says, with a broad grin and a wink, "but safe enough."

"It appears there's a story brewing over there. I doubt the Varisian lad would've taken up those daggers if he didn't have some confidence. Fingers are in finite supply."

"So what has inspired the bustle and energy? Swallowtail Festival is certainly coming up shortly, but the crowds and excitement seem more than I'd expect from such a festival," Chadron directs his question to Dairkal, but his manner puts the question to anyone within earshot.

"Please - it's a lovely day to sit out and swap stories. I see you're as travel worn as I feel - and as freighted with kit." Chadron looks briefly at the empty scabbard, hesitates for perceptible second, then carries on, "At the moment my tales are days old and many miles from useful. I was hoping to trade some drinks and fellowship with our talented local jonglier in exchange for some local background color," Chadron drew breath, "My name is Chadron, from just east of Korvosa. I've been sometime underway, but it appears I've run out of westbound road."

Chadron pushes back a chair, gestures grandly, and says, "That's a very long-winded way of say 'Yes friend, set yourself and join us in fellowship," he chuckles briefly. "I may have been a day or two too long on the road without company. Hah!" And he takes a long draft of his beer.

"By the way - good beer. Local, says the proprieter." Chadron beams at his two new-found companions.

Chadron strode into town, across the narrow bridge and under the town wall. It was crowded and busy - though he could see a plume of dust at the north gate that seemed to indicate even more activity than here.

It was early afternoon, and Chadron was fairly hungry. He hadn't bothered to restart his campfire this morning and had had only some stale cold bread before pushing on to Sandpoint.

'So - first things first, a bite to eat and some news,' he thought. So determined, Chadron swung rapidly past the docks and warehouses on his left, 'Not fish stew - definitely not,' he angled further north and west. While underway, he noticed a well-dressed and handsome Varisian (@Gudada) - not unlike Chadron himself, though slimmer and more brightly dressed - working the opposite end of the street. Chadron slid around the crowd, not drawing attention. He didn't want to foul the man's operation. Chadron also became very aware that he was carrying all of his worldly possessions on his back - and he checked them briefly to ensure they were all there. 'Perhaps later I'll introduce myself, see if there are any other People of the Road in town. But for the moment, he's working, and I'm still hungry...'

'Ah! that's the one! he thought, catching a delectable odor of roast lamb from a shop on the right, just two doors down from a theater of some kind. In the small restaurant's outdoor seating, an energetic halfling was working the patrons with a juggling act that was really quite good. Chadron stepped inside the restaurant, exclaiming, "Ah! that's the one!" He engaged the halfling proprieter briefly, and took some sliced lamb, potatoes, salad, and beer ("quite a good local brewery" advised the owner) to one of the outside tables.

Chadron angled himself into the smallish seating (not just the jongelier, but also the proprieter were both halflings). He settled pack, bow, spear, and sheild against the outside wall of the restaurant - away from the street. Once situated, Chadron watched the juggler a bit, and the sweep of people on the street. He noted the same Varisian he'd seen earler, 'if I'm not misremembering, there weren't as many pouches on his belt earler..'.

As the juggler made his way around towards him, Chadron invited, "Friend juggler, your work looks thirsty. Can I invite you to some drink and a conversation while I finish this excellent lamb?"

@Gudada - OK, I know Gudada wouldn't actually have a lifted purse on his belt. but it makes a good story.
@Dairkal - I'm making the brash presumption you would be OK with picking up some tips at a halfling establishment near the theater - please correct as required.
@Talliree - I hope it's not stereotyping (or typecasting?) to imagine Talliree on or near the scene somewhere. In fact, it was 'Yndercook' that started me thinking about a halfling restaurant...
