Narrowing his eyes, Caladan releases another two arrows at the ratman who shot him. Two attacks via rapidshot at Ratman (1d20+6=13, 1d8=4, 1d20+6=23, 1d8=1) Apologies for the delayed appearance - I am struggling with time/creative energy atm... :( Caladan readies his bow and releases two arrows at the rat-like figures. Two attacks at ratmen. (1d20+4=8, 1d8=4, 1d20+4=18, 1d8=7) Hopefully the second is good enough Raoh wrote: "True that a lot of worse things have occured on the streets. Again I think involving Saul in these matters will bring bad new to his door." "Maybe," answers Caladan with a shrug. "Of course, the reason these people were being held was because someone was trying to disrupt Saul's business. Somehow, I think he was already involved, whether we'd brought them here or not." "You mentioned these people are on the run from the bosses," states Caladan bluntly as he turns to face Saul. "And that we are copping flak from them? Perhaps you'd like to come clean as to what 'we' may have done to upset them? If you expect us to take such concerns into account, it will help if you let us know the full story rather than leaving us in the dark." Raoh wrote: "While I'm all for helping those in need, mixing Saul into this problem is hardly a solution. Did anyone see you come in?" Raoh relaxes up against the wall. Caladan shakes his head. "I didnt see anyone," he replies. "To be honest, the people here didnt seem to blink when the fight broke out. I suspect they've seen a lot worse." Stowing his bow, Caladan looks around to see who has noticed the battle and how they are responding. After checking the immediate area, he also heads over to assist Uathach in tending to Therik's wounds. Caladan nocks another arrow, releasing it at the thug who cast the spell. Caladan's second attack. (1d20+5=10, 1d8=5) Somehow, unless he's trying to catch it, I doubt that's going to hit... :( Seeing Uathach's attack sail wide of the mark, Caladan nocks an arrow and releases it at one of the thugs. Attack on thugs. (1d20+5=18, 1d8=4) That's assuming I'm a little way back from Uathach and able to use my bow. If I think they're too close, I'll instead use a scimitar... Alternate attack with scimitar, if I'm too close to use my bow. (1d20+3=10, 1d6+2=3) Uathach of Iomedae wrote: "Caladan, any ideas? I wish the rest were here now, I didn't expect so many..." Caladan spends a few moments appraising the situation, absentmindedly stroking the holy symbol hanging around his neck. Finally he shakes his head somewhat ruefully. "There's no way around it - there's three of them and only two of us, unless our new friend is willing to fight for his own freedom," he comments quietly. "Of course, you are an imposing sort. Perhaps the two of us will be sufficient to frighten them long enough to spirit our charges away. Maybe we can persuade them it would be prudent to return to their boss and 'report' rather than to get in our way. It's not much of a plan, but if you and I concentrate our attacks on whoever their leader turns out to be - the other two might flee as soon as he is dispatched..." Caladan trails off with a slight shrug. "I'm not much used to things like this," he confesses. "But I'm willing to bet that they're not going to quietly pack up and go home, just because we ask them to." Caladan will go where he is needed. If most are helping with the cargo, he will accompany Uathach. As the group begins to aplit up, Caladan will be looking around in case these men's employer has anyone watching the docks. I'm not sure what we're up to - are you waiting for me? If not, use this when it's his turn... As combat erupts beside the ship, Caladan fires at the leader. Caladan's attack. (1d20+5=9, 1d8=1) Terrific... DM Dave wrote:
Are you using the intiative rolls posted in our profile? Or should we roll and those are only if we're away for a bit? Breaking away from the rest of the group and hanging back from the ship as it is unloaded, Caladan moves into a position where he can hopefully get a clear shot at the hijackers. Expecting Raoh or Uathach to intercede at the dock, Caladan restrains himself from drawing his bow immediately, not wanting to provoke anything violent if he can help it, however he stands ready to assist if negotiations turn sour. Uathach of Iomedae wrote:
"I don't know that we can really be sure that Clegg attacked us, in fact all he did was give us a pouch of gold," Caladan says quietly. "Personally, I'd prefer we just drop in unannounced - he can hardly have an ambush prepared then, plus Uathach, Branth, Raoh all seem pretty accomplished warriors - I don't think we have very much to fear." "If he was involved in planting the snake, it's a stronger response than inviting him to a meeting. If he wasnt involved - well, we havent really accused him of anything, have we?" Raoh wrote: "Not native, huh? How not native are we talking? Not from Varisia, a completely different continent?" Knowledge (Nature) check to answer Raoh's question. (1d20+4= 7) "I don't really know, I'm afraid. All I do know is that I wouldnt expect to find one of her kind around here." Raoh wrote: "How'd it go with snake, give ya any trouble" Roah asks as Caladan returns "She was fine," assures Caladan, "I left her down the coast a little way, I hope she'll be ok - that breed is not native to this area. Clearly someone went to quite a bit of trouble to give us quite a bit of trouble." "How is she?" he asks Uathach, indicating the injured maid. DM Dave wrote: Caladan manages to calm the snake down and remove it from the building. As he is carrying the snake out of town he realizes that this breed of snake is not native to this region and must have been brought here by someone. Caladan takes the snake a fair distance from the town, trying to find an area as close as possible to its natural habitat. As he returns to the gambling house, he frowns slightly to himself. These city people have no respect. he thinks Dragging innocent animals into their schemes. I bet they thought we'd end up killing the poor thing... Raoh wrote: "Violence... You really are a man of faith" Raoh casts a glance to the holy man, "Not the snakes fault if it hurt someone" Caladan nods his agreement to Raoh. "I'll see what I can do," he murmurs as he steps forward, staring intently at the snake. "Why don't you see to the maid's injuries?" he suggests to Uathach. I'll try and calm the snake and hopefully persuade it to let me pick it up and remove it from the town. Wild empathy to calm snake. (d20 +1 for level -1 for stat) (1d20=19) In case it's needed for the evening: Perception check watching Clegg Zincher. (1d20+9= 15 (17 if sight/sound)) Hmm, perhaps Caladan was a trifle overconfident.. DM Dave wrote:
Caladan nods once. "I'll keep an eye on him through the night," he promises quietly. "If he's up to anything improper, I'll see it." Raoh wrote: "But lets say the cyphermages already tried divining, and failed. What would you suggest to find what's causing the blot?" Caladan gives a rueful smile and a slight shrug in response to Raoh's question. "I wish I knew," he answers. "When we became aware of the blot over Riddleport, it seemed sensible for my master to send me here to investigate. I'm afraid that, now I'm here, I find myself at a loss as to what I should do..." DM Dave wrote: "I wish I could tell you that," Argentus says. "Unfortunately I have not been able to discerne the spell or it's source. For all I know it could be something tied to our own attempts to use magic to discover the secrets of the Cypher Gate." Caladan ponders Argentus's words, his fingers absently cradling the holy symbol hanging around his neck. "Has there been any attempt to use divination? There must have. Either by yourselves or the priests of the town. If it may have been caused by somebody here in Riddleport..." he breaks off, shaking his head slightly. "Falling rocks, unnatural weather, it wont be long before people are hurt." DM Dave wrote: "The Blot seems to be a magical side effect of another spell. Some sort of convergence of magical focus. I have used magic to examine it up close, and despite an unnatural coldness in the interior, it appears to be no more dangerous then an ordinary cloud. It does seem to grow and shrink in connection with the tides however," Blakely says. "And nobody has any idea what spell is causing it? Or who may be responsible?" Caladan asks with a slight frown. If it fluctuates with the tides, then perhaps it is some kind of natural event thinks the half-elf to himself, although something about the dark stain makes him very uneasy. Dave - I'm really enjoying the game, however will be unable to post for a week or so. My wife and I are going on holiday and I only just found out that the place we're staying is so remote it has no internet (not even dialup). Please DMPC Caladan for me - I'll be back on Sunday the 1st of March. Cheers. DM Dave wrote: After just a few minutes, the strange effect stops and the weather vanes return to normal. When you arrive at the Gold Goblin, Saul asks you if you would mind interviewing a prospective new employee today. "All of us? that might be a little intimidating," smiles Caladan slightly, looking over at Branth. The half-elf ponders for a moment and then asks Saul "What do you think needs doing that we can't?" Caladan watches the unnatural display, concern and worry written on his face. As he looks around the town's rooves, pondering to himself, he absentmindedly fingers the holy sybol hanging around his neck. With a soft, murmurred prayer to Sarenrae, he peers intently at the blot, as if he could banish it from the sky by sheer force of will. DM Dave wrote: "Nay, I cannot say that I have heard anything reliable about it," Saul says. "Even the Cyphermages have not been able to divine it's nature or purpose. However, the lord mayor has offered a substantial reward if someone were to discover it's secrets." "Well, thank you anyway - knowing that nobody knows is something at least," answers Caladan. "Whatever the blot is, I feel uneasy that nobody knows." Frustrated at his continued ignorance and lack of progress, Caladan retires for the night also. Caladan will try and catch Saul at some point during the evening. Motioning with his head up through the roof, he asks the casino owner about the blot. "Tell me Saul, no doubt you keep your ear to the ground. Have you heard any explanations for the dark stain in the sky?" asks the half-elf. "Explanations from people who might know, that is. I've heard plenty of stories inspired more by ale than insight." Raoh wrote: "Caladan, why don't you and your friend there joing us. Like the boss said, 'drinks are on the house' and I can help ya get used to town. You are welsome to join us too Uta, but that's if you can step off that pedestal of yours." Caladan nods slightly in acceptance of the invitation. "I would like that. I'm not as comfortable here as I am on the open road," he continues. "I could use a guide." Caladan remains in the rafters, nocking an arrow and drawing a bead on one of the thugs. I will ready an attack on sailor-2. If he attacks, I will shoot at him. If they leave quietly, or begin negotiating once more, I will refrain. When the shower stops, Caladan heads out into the street, looking up into the sky. Finding a clear view, he studies the blot intently, looking for any change from yesterday. Having stared for several minutes at the dark stain, he turns his attention to the rest of the sky, keeping his eye out for anything else unusual. Sight based perception check if required - (1d20+11=25) Just in case - presumably I think it's completely normal for rocks to rain down from the sky and then evaporate... :( After looking around the main gambling room, Caladan thanks Feldur, bids the others good night and then retires to his room. "Well, I've solved that problem anyway." he thinks to himself as he drifts off to sleep. "At least I won't run out of money..." closing his eyes, he drifts off into a light sleep. DM Dave wrote: "How about 10 am," Saul says. "We have new staff to interview. Normally though we would not open until evening. Of course you are welcome to stay here if you wish." Caladan nods to Saul. "I will be staying here," he says. "Before I sleep, I'd like to look around the main gambling room and get my bearings while the place is empty. If I'm to be a spotter it will be from the rafters, did you say? Can you have someone show me around?" Raoh wrote: "Perhaps we can save the literature for later." Caladan smiles at the tiefling's comment, his fingers closing around the holy symbol hanging around his neck. Raoh wrote: If I may, what about the tournament? Are you calling it off due to the robbery, or will it continue? I only as because I was looking forward to participating." "Well, if we make you the dealer, I think there may be some complaints about that." Caladan remarks quietly. "But I wouldn't worry about it too much. I expect there's much more money to be made by running a tournament than from playing in one. Am I right, Saul?" Branth Bummugboar wrote: Branth listens to the conversation going on around her, particularly interested in Caladan's question. "Yeah, whattayamean by 'spotter'?" she asks from her chair. Formerly tense, she seems a little more at ease now, and takes a sip of her drink. "From the way you handled those axes I think we should put you right by the front door," Caladan says raising his glass in salute to the powerful half-orc. "That would make anyone think twice before starting any trouble." DM Dave wrote:
"Spotter?" asks Caladan "Is that watching over the place, keeping and eye on troublemakers and cheats, that sort of thing?" "I could do that."
