Personality

Brugga carries many of the markers of her upbringing: a fierceness in battle, a suspiciousness of strangers (tempered somewhat by her travels and the fact that down south, everybody is a stranger), and an even deeper mistrust of magic. She tells herself that Vix, her companion, is just a wild animal she inadvertently tamed, but deep down, she knows better. Brugga has a keen mind, far keener than most would every suspect a Kellid of the Realm could possess, and she rather enjoys playing the dumb barbarian for the imperceptive southern crowds.
One thing she does find awkward about life in the south lands is the oppressive heat. Brugga possesses little in the way of modesty: in the clanhold, men and women wore many furs out of necessity, not decency, and both genders would freely expose themselves in the steam rooms. Brugga owns a suit of hide armour, and finds it difficult to wear much else, lest the oppressive heat may cause her to melt away. Brugga has no cares for the southern notions of womanly beauty, nor the southern ideas of personal grooming, although she does enjoy a bath, with the water as cold as she can find.

History

Brugga of Slothjaw was set to enjoy the normal life of every Kellid maiden from the Realm: hunt sloths and mammoths, eat greasy meat by a fire in some draughty hovel, and die in her furs at the ripe old age of 45. Her family was a respectable group of greasy meat-eaters – all strong warriors who contributed to the survival of their clan in one way or another, and never, EVER even dreamed of messing around with vile arcane demon magic.
At first, Brugga thought it odd that the arctic fox started following her during her hunts with her clan. Perhaps the creature was starving – it would get no meat from her as feeding wild animals was something soft southerners did. The fox certainly looked well-fed. Eventually, Brugga’s vulpine shadow was noticed by others, which caused great comment and discussion amongst the clan members, especially when it started following her inside the Slothjaw clanhold itself. Brugga tried scaring the creature away, then eventually even threatening and chasing it, but it always returned. It seemed too smart to be a simple fox. Soon, Brugga found that she was able to understand some of what it was feeling; she sensed its fear when she chased it, its confusion as it tried to make contact with her. When Brugga stopped some clan children from throwing stones at the fox, telling them they were scaring it, the elders took action. Consorting with animals in the manner Brugga was obviously doing was an evil thing, not to be trusted, and certainly not to be tolerated within the clanhold. Brugga was summarily expelled from the clan, and cut off from her family.
Life in the Realm is already hard. Life in the Realm without the protection of the clan is impossible, so Brugga did the only thing she could do to survive, she left the Realm. The journey was hard and took many weeks, but she and her vixen companion eventually made their way to Varisia and Magnimar. From there, Brugga hopped a ship heading even further south. She’s not sure what is driving her to explore so far away from her home, but she knows she can never go back, so she might as well do what no member of her family has ever done: see the world.
