Branahm Pelgane is the fourth of five siblings born to a craftsman family from the North Point region of Korvosa. His eldest two siblings followed their father into the family business, and the third, Arius, studied magic. Branahm had initially intended to enter the family business as well, but was "encouraged" by his siblings to enter the clergy after his parent's deaths, which they felt better suited his talents. The fact that this meant that the family business was split two ways rather than three was not mentioned, but was noted by Branahm, who feels some resentment towards his brother and sister over this matter. Branahm nonetheless settled into his unplanned career, becoming an acolyte of Torag.
