While there are certainly some elements of Golarion that are inspired by more recent events and eras than the true medieval era... the same is true if you go backward in time as well as forward. We've got a lot, probably MORE inspiration in Golarion from ancient Egypt, Rome, Atlantis, and a fair amount of other ancient world stuff in the world as well as more modern ships, democracies, pianos, and firearms.

Golarion inspiration spans a HUGE range of time to either side of the medieval era, in other words.

Yes but the ancient world is closer in functioning to the modern world than most of the middle ages. There is a reason Europe after the fall of Rome is called the Dark Ages.

True, we lost some beautiful, elegent advances during the dark ages, that we have never completely recovered. Our technology has been able to make things easier, but not always better.

So I don't see the validity of this arguement when its already been done before. I mean sorry to burst your reality bubble but wow, am i the only one who sees this?

I think you're right Critz. There have been anachronistic mish mashes in D&D since the beginning. In Dave Arneson's Blackmoor, the legendary dungeon under Castle Blackmoor had a turnstile and charged an entry fee. It was all in fun, but not "true to any time period" if there is such a thing.

I do think that the game has modernized somewhat by moving away from the idea that all monsters are just things to kill. The idea that the goblins have personalities and goals are there if you want to use them.

I guess, really it depends on the gaming group, and the GM. My former DM did not like fire arms in his main FR campaign, but when he ran SpellJammer it made more sense, so he rolled with it.

A lot of what you have revealed here Clark has confirmed what many of us had been speculating about for some time. When WOTC started ending or at least changing relationships with third party producers, their management thought they were reeling back in their control of the property, a classic business reorganization strategy of moving to a vertical "value chain". The corporate management team could not or would not see that it was too late for that. The "D&D" value chain was pretty much permanently spread out into a sort of far reaching network. They had Paizo, Green Ronin, Necromancer, Kenzerco, Goodman Games, etc., as part of the value chain. The greatest benefit of the OGL was good will. Good will with the consumer and with other stake holders like third party publishers is an intangible asset. It is hard to build up, hard to define, and difficult to replace once lost. The third party publishers were allies to WOTC, but they could not see that, and turned them into competitors. They wanted to consolidate the market, and instead they fractured it. The network value chain that they built is gone and broken up into smaller mini value chains and the now growing Paizo/Pathfinder chain.

The OGL philosphy seems to be along the lines of "a rising tide raises all boats" very much a free market concept. The GSL seems more of a protectionist "make sure ours is the only boat afloat" way of thinking.

Could you please not waste post-count with simple "Oooohs", "Aaahs", "Gimme!", "Like-button" and similar when a new release is posted? Please. It doesn't add to the conversation nor is it incentive for me to buy the product. To the contrary, if the post-count gets too high, it isn't a wise use of my time to try to get up to date with the thread.

Instead, perhaps you could nudge the publisher to release more details.
Or perhaps you could sway final editing with your wish list for inclusion. Whatever you choose, please be considerate of those of us who must wade through afterwards to get to the crux of the conversation.

Thank you.

Police ourselves? Have higher standards for what is WORTHY of a post?

Well you've solicited more than a one word post and you are going to get one. In my opinion it is terribly arrogant and heavy handed of you to try to impose some personal standard of what you consider to be a worthy post on the other people who post here. If I or anyone else wish to make a one word post expressing our excitement and anticipation for an upcoming product, as long as we are not violating Paizo's forum rules, we should feel free to do so.

A simple, short post in support of a new product contributes more to the conversation than a lengthier post that complains about short posts and makes NO MENTION of the product at all.

A forum is a place for everyone to express themselves. Some do it by posting treatises, some by posting one word. They all have value to some one, even if only to the poster, and even if they have no value to you.

Is the discount REALLY that significant?
As an Aussie, yes. From Amazon I will be paying $30 USD for Ultimate Magic (including shipping). From Paizo I would pay $55 USD. From my FLGS I would pay $58 USD. That's almost half price from my FLGS, and substantial savings from Paizo. I buy most things in PDF (I prefer them to physical books), so to me that $25-$28 difference means 2-3 Paizo books I could otherwise buy.

Amazon has the advantage of economies of scale. Due to the size of their supply chain and the volume of product they move every day, they can beat the cost of a smaller operation like Paizo even in the international market. Amazon's efficiency means lower costs for them, lower price for consumers, but not always convenience for consumers. Massive systems like Amazon do well with high volume, mass market goods. A relatively low volume, niche product does not move through the system as smoothly, hence the longer wait.

Hey there KaeYoss,

It wasn't my intent to justify Axel's venom. His approach was certainly in bad form. I don't believe Lisa would have thought that his delivery or tone had any merit. I agree that Lisa being willing to consider his underlying point despite the attitude is a sign of her thoughtfulness and openmindedness.

Does Axel deserve to fail? He deserves to take whatever consequences spring from his actions, as we all must. From your perspective, he certainly does not deserve your business. He has lost some potential goodwill and potential customers, now it is up to Axel to learn from this or not.

That's all I got to say about that.

Thanks.

First off, I want to thank Paizo as a consumer for the access to and support of third party creators.

Second, I want to thank all the third party creators for doing what you do. Creating interesting and useful works, and also the true gratitude you show to the consumers.

Third, I'd like to address Axel's post:

Axel's words were rather strong, but my sense was they came from frustration, not hate. Maybe this thread wasn't the forum to bring it up. Maybe he could have taken a different approach, but it may have some merit, since Lisa gave it consideration. I hope Axel sees Lisa's response and takes it in a positive light.

Oh and Axel, thanks for the FREE adventure! At the Heart of Evil is a cool little module. I have not run it, but it was a fun read.

Fourth, other Paizonian's please, don't counter knee-jerk to Axel's knee-jerk. Harlin Ellison, the respected science fiction writer was criticized for not being a terribly friendly person to his readers. He was asked why he wasn't kinder to those who buy his books and provide him with income. I found his reply to be thought provoking. He said (paraphrased), "You know what I owe my readers for buying my books? A good story." Just saying not all creators are fluffy bunnies, but we can still enjoy the work.

Thanks.

In the question of roleplaying and alignments, something I heard Willem Dafoe say once in an interview changed my perspective. He was asked what the difference was between playing a heroe vs a villain. His response,"There ain't no difference, man. Everybody's righteous, in his own mind."

That's true in real life, and I think applicable in roleplaying games as well.

Also of note, it is actually very good of Paizo to offer shipping outside the U.S. My employer, a fairly large catalog retailer, will not ship outside the U.S. just because of the added cost. We have Canadian customers who live close to the U.S. border and have items shipped to a P.O. box Stateside. Then, they cross the border to pick up the package. A small business like Paizo is cool to offer it, especially when there are other outlets for their products, like Amazon.

Orcus gets about half a page in the book, in any event. With some other tidbits scattered around here and there. He's actually had more attention over the years than any other demon lord, though... and as a result we tend to skew pretty "light" on the new information for him.

This may sound foolish, but I was a bit confused by the "Will not ship untill all preordered items are available" (paraphrased) message. The three Doctor Who RPG products in this order are all on preorder with two of them in limbo with no date. Does this mean that if one of them does come in, it can't be shipped until the others arrive also?

If that's the case, I guess I want the order split so the items ship as they are available.

I'm sorry.

Because Form is very much part of magical Function. There's a reason that multi-spell charged items come in the form of staves, it's the most reliable way to form a stable matrix for such a device.

If a DM allows it it has to be researched and both doing that and the crafting is going to be much more expensive and require the craft magic arms and armor plus the craft staff feats.

That argument is based entirely on made up physics.

You mean you can't make it up because the made up rules say you can't?
I am a DM and in my game I would allow it. The rules are not meant to stifle creativity, just give it some general guidance.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again untill they take my dice away. Once you buy the books and take them home you can change anything you want. If your DM is cool with it, run with it.

Peace.

Where exactly is this indicated in the APG?

The feat 'Summoner's Call' says that it grants one more summon per day... So what is the initial limit?

From what I read in the summoner class description, the eidolon can be summoned as many times per day as you want, if you dismissed it. It takes one minute to perform the ritual, so it's not always practical to do it during an encounter.

If the eidolon is dismissed because it was reduced to zero hit points, you cannot summon it for 24 hrs.

That feat seems a little underwhelming.

I hate to be the one to trot out an old cliche, but from the cultural perspective, in feudal Japan the samurai asked no quarter and gave no quarter to their enemies in return. In their society it was considered honorable, if not necessarily "good".
