Heath:

Spoiler:

“What? Snow! Ice! What a rip – I was sold on a tropical holiday!”

Beldan lurks about, trying to stay behind any cover (is the gate a physical thing, like can I hide behind it from the monkeys?

(Male Human Rogue 14)

Beldan steps stealthily through the portal and looks about. Stealth: 1d20 + 33 ⇒ (15) + 33 = 48, Perception: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (3) + 16 = 19

(Male Human Rogue 14)

Beldan will go first, but he’ll wait to see if Altai or Pip or anyone wants to lay down any buffs on him first.

(Male Human Rogue 14)

“You alright there Stig? Have a drink, it’ll do you good.”

“So … ready?”

Beldan looks at Altai and the others and makes ready to step through the gate.

"Cool ..."

"Alright then, I'm ready to go."

(Male Human Rogue 14)

"Alright, I'm up for it; the weather sounds better than here anyway. So these wishes ... you're not going to mess them up are you? Like I wish to be as strong as an ox so you turn me into an ox and stuff ..."

(Male Human Rogue 14)

When he thinks the genies aren’t listening, Beldan whispers to Pip and Altai, “I’m all for rescuing princesses and killing mad wizards – no offence Altai – and getting well rewarded by rich folk, but do we have time for this? What about the book, the giants, the dragon, Hnoss …Besides, aren’t these guys … you know, kind of evil?”

"Huh?"

(Male Human Rogue 14)

“Heheh, he said sultana,” snickers Beldan. Maybe he’s had too much wine.

“So this young wife of the Sultan ... is she a hottie?” Beldan looks around at the aghast or disapproving faces. “What? I mean is she an efreet! It's a relevent question.”

(Male Human Rogue 14)

“Holy Xerxes this guy knows how to show off,” whispers Beldan, before being distracted by the dancing girls and wine.

(Male Human Rogue 14)

“You guys are all fiery and stuff ... is it hot in your city? Like, will we burn up or anything?”

(Male Human Rogue 14)

“Well your boss’s war machine was attacking this city we’re guests in ... it would have been rude not to defend it ... This City of Brass sounds like a pretty wealthy place, and not like anywhere around here; why would you want to attack this dreary dwarf city?”

(Male Human Rogue 14)

“So why did this lord of yours attack us, huh?” asks Beldan. “And why did he send such pissweak guys like that against us?” Beldan pretends he didn’t even break a sweat. “And ... why are we on a timetable?”

(Male Human Rogue 14)

Beldan whips around his lightning thrower and (if possible) fires it at the retreating efreet. Lightning bolt: 5d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 6, 2, 2) = 16 – can’t remember if these are a ‘save for half’ type thing or a ranged touch attack: if the later, 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (3) + 20 = 23 ranged touch.

Then 5 foot step to H6.

Unless Stig kills it first ...

(Male Human Rogue 14)

“What? What exactly is up there?” asks Beldan nervously, seeing the response of those who have seen what is above I don’t think anyone has actually said the word ‘dragon’ as yet.

(Male Human Rogue 14)

Perception: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (7) + 16 = 23

"What? Where? Dammit, I can't see a blasted thing through all this smoke."

Beldan really harshes on the efreeti, and the cold seems to particularly cause it pain. It stands though,....

Weird. My eyes saw '1', my brain thought '2'.

(Male Human Rogue 14)

Right, I think from my position (I8) I’m flanking efreet 2 with the mega-beetle and/or the jolly green giant – if you’ve got a different interpretation Heath, that’s cool, I’ll 5 foot step to I7 (I can never quite figure out flanking with reach creatures). Either way, full attack on number 2.

Keen Icy Burst rapier. Pip said he was gonna re-start the courage song this round, so I’m factoring in the +3s (will wait till he starts strumming if needs be), and I believe we still have haste up. 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (2) + 23 = 25 Damage: 1d6 + 4 + 7d6 ⇒ (5) + 4 + (6, 4, 5, 5, 2, 4, 4) = 39 and 1d6 ⇒ 4 cold.
1d20 + 23 ⇒ (18) + 23 = 41 Damage: 1d6 + 4 + 7d6 ⇒ (5) + 4 + (5, 4, 3, 4, 1, 3, 1) = 30 and 1d6 ⇒ 6 cold.
1d20 + 18 ⇒ (15) + 18 = 33 Damage: 1d6 + 4 + 7d6 ⇒ (6) + 4 + (3, 4, 1, 1, 4, 4, 5) = 32 and 1d6 ⇒ 5 cold.
First successful sneak attack also does 6 bleed damage and 2 strength damage.

Attacks 2 and 3 are potential crits:
Crit confirm roll: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (5) + 23 = 28Extra damage if confirmed: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 and 1d10 ⇒ 7 cold.
Crit confirm roll: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (20) + 18 = 38Extra damage if confirmed: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10 and 1d10 ⇒ 6 cold.

“Put that in your pipe and smoke it!”

(Male Human Rogue 14)

43 new posts? It’s just like the old days!

“Uh oh …” Beldan ducks the ifrit’s falchion, then ducks and weaves to get around the other side of one of the others. Tumble to I8. Acrobatics: 1d20 + 27 ⇒ (3) + 27 = 30

(Male Human Rogue 14)

“Yeah, better keep an eye on it Stig ... could be an important clue ...”

(Male Human Rogue 14)

“Whew,” Beldan blows on his singed hands and checks to make sure his hair and eyebrows are intact. “Glad that’s over with absolutely no further ramifications or dangers ...”

Perception: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (17) + 16 = 33, Stealth: 1d20 + 33 ⇒ (1) + 33 = 34

(Male Human Rogue 14)

Reflex: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (10) + 15 = 25

Beldan dances away from the oncoming flame as the golem explodes.

(Male Human Rogue 14)

Full hasted sneak attack with rapier:
Attack 1: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (12) + 23 = 35 Damage: 1d6 + 4 + 7d6 ⇒ (3) + 4 + (4, 3, 2, 1, 6, 3, 2) = 28
Attack 2: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (7) + 23 = 30 Damage: 1d6 + 4 + 7d6 ⇒ (3) + 4 + (4, 5, 2, 3, 1, 4, 2) = 28
Attack 3: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (15) + 18 = 33 Damage: 1d6 + 4 + 7d6 ⇒ (1) + 4 + (1, 4, 5, 6, 4, 6, 2) = 33

possible crit with that last one if 33 hits: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (16) + 18 = 34 Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

So attack 3 is a total of 42 points of damage if 33 hits.

(Male Human Rogue 14)

Beldan discards his crossbow; flies down with his cloak, trying to evade any incoming swipes from the golem Acrobatics: 1d20 + 27 ⇒ (12) + 27 = 39 – land in O8.

Drawing his rapier as he goes, Beldan tries to stab it into any joints in the giant’s plating. Rapier attack: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (15) + 23 = 38 Damage: 1d6 + 4 + 7d6 ⇒ (6) + 4 + (5, 6, 2, 1, 6, 5, 1) = 36

(Male Human Rogue 14)

It’s cool.

Beldan spefically did not move in until a haste spell had been laid down.

(Male Human Rogue 14)

Beldan opens up with a ranged hasted deadly aim sneak attack, using rapid reload to reload his crossbow in between shots. His shock crossbow does additional electricity damage; I know that probably won’t hurt the golem, but let me know if you need to know how much it is in case it heals it or hastens it or whatever.

Attack 1: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (3) + 17 = 20 Damage: 1d8 + 11 + 7d6 ⇒ (4) + 11 + (1, 3, 4, 5, 5, 3, 4) = 40

blerg.

(Male Human Rogue 14)

Once he’s hasted, Beldan will use the cloak of the bat, his increased movement and his fast stealth ability 1d20 + 33 ⇒ (15) + 33 = 48 to fly to the roof of the building at P3, flying around the ravaged building and the golem’s reach. Once there he will load his crossbow as a free action and get ready to sneak attack next round.

(Male Human Rogue 14)

Beldan will move to P22 in preperation for the haste spell.

(Male Human Rogue 14)

So, the plan as I see it is something along these lines:
Round 1: everyone gather together. Altai summons a goliath beetle (triceratops), Pip summons a wooly rhino, Elgan summons the Jolly Green Giant – all within charge range of the golem. Others self-buff if appropriate.
Round 2: Pip casts haste on the PCs, Gjetost and as many summoned critters as possible. Elgan and Altai drop any other buff / prep spells they can (an enlarge on Stig and or / Gjtost might be good). Then Beldan flies around to a good ranged sneak attack position. Stig and Gjetost get into charge and/or rock throwing position.
Round 3: Pip Inspires courage. Beldan opens up with a ranged sneak attack. The summoned dudes charge in (hopefully soaking up any AoOs. Then Stig charges in (summoned monsters need to leave room for him). Gjtost can charge in to melee or throw rocks.
Round 4: Beldan keeps doing ranged sneak attacks if possible or tumbles in to flank and melee sneak attack. Summons critters and melee hitters keep whaling away. If needs be, Altai summons a giant dragonfly (roc) to attack the golem from above OR use melf’s acid arrow (I don’t think golem will be immune as it doesn’t allow spell resistance?) Pip and Elgan use spells if they can or standby for healing.
Round 5: Repeat. If the summoned dudes are doing ok, melee PCs can retreat to avoid the explosion.

Altai summons 2+ hard-hitting beasties, Pip lays down some buffs, Beldan sneaks around and opens with a ranged sneak attack from the rear, Stig, Gjetost and the beasties charge in, Beldan flanks to continue sneak attacking, Pip stands by to heal if needs be, Altai stands by to summon more monsters if any go down. If Elgan shows up he can join in the summoning fun and provide healing support.
I also can spend a round and summon another dino if you want. Feel free to do so, I'm a little pressed for time. I have a Summon Monster V scroll.

Wooly Rhino might be a good choice for damage output. I think you have the spell on your list of known spells, so no need to use up your scroll.

dungeonmaster heathy wrote:
oh yeah; you guys ditched out on a golem in The Castle of Amber too, iirc....I've found your Achilles Heel!

Tough golems do scare the crap out of me. We should go read the optimisation or Fighters Is Teh Suxxor threads, someone always throws out a scenario with a wizard vs an iron golem in those, the solution always seems to be a spell that creates a pit, or a pre-existing pit with an illusionary floor over the top of it.

(Male Human Rogue 14)

Even without adamantine weapons, Stig does enough damage that he should be able to hurt it. Beldan can hurt it with sneak attacks (generally constructs are not immune to sneak attacks, though this one might be I guess). Gjetost should be able to damage it. If Altai can summon some monsters that are heavy hitters, we can probably wear it down. Edit - a few of your triceratops equivalents might do nicely, using power attack and powerful charge.

The explosion bit is troubling, but Stig can probably survive it if he doesn’t get too badly hit (we try to use the summoned monsters to soak up its attacks), and if it allows a reflex save Beldan might be ok.

This is where we need a cleric – stand back thirty feet or so and keep channelling energy every round to keep everyone healthy – I don’t think positive energy would heal the golem.

(Male Human Rogue 14)

“If you guys want to attack it, let me know, I’ll try to lead with a sneak attack ... not sure if it has any vulnerable spots though ...”

(Male Human Rogue 14)

“I knew I shoulda bought that golembane scarab!”

Once Altai has imparted any wisdom and/or cast any buffs, Beldan ducks into the alley just north of the smithy to hide. R22.
Stealth: 1d20 + 33 ⇒ (15) + 33 = 48. He’ll also check the door behind him to see if its locked.

(Male Human Rogue 14)

Being an ever-cautious fellow, Beldan prepares to hide. “I don’t know if I’ll be able to damage that thing,” he mutters, looking down at his new and improved, but not adamantine, rapier. He then looks about for dark alleys and other likely hiding places.

(Male Human Rogue 14)

“This sort of thing happen often?” Beldan asks the shop dwarves, before running outside to looksee.

(Male Human Rogue 14)

Beldan air-fences with his sword, making sure the balance is still good, when the explosion goes off outside. Ref: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (16) + 15 = 31

Beldan's there, he needs to pick up his new and improved rapier as well.

Done and ready to move on.

(Male Human Rogue 14)

Can I get my rapier updated to Icy Burst? I’ve got the jink. Time is probably an issue though.

(Male Human Rogue 14)

As it doesn’t seem there are any takers for the +3 RoP, Beldan will take it. He gives his +2 Ring to Altai or Elgan.

Pip’s our main archer, but the bows and arrows are the wrong size for him, so we’ll sell them. We can’t use the rhoka swords, so we’ll sell them (I’ll assume their standard price is 20gp which is probably conservative). I think everyone has more effective or appropriate armour than the chain shirts so we’ll sell them. Assuming we can sell everything for the standard 50% we can get 21,340gp.

That is 4,268 per share if divided amongst 5 characters (PCs only).
OR 3556.6 per share if divided amongst 6 characters (ie, Gjetost gets an equal share, or he and Hnoss get a half share each).

I'll take the scrolls. I assume Beldan wants the love potion?

You assume correctly. But Stig probably needs it more than Beldan does ...

(Male Human Rogue 14)

“Yeah, and they don’t sound at all like dwarves either,” comments Beldan. “They know words like ‘atmospheric’ and ‘nigh’, and I can understand them.”

So what have we got to sell?
4 x +1 rhoka swords
4 x +1 comp long bows
40 x +2 arrows
4 x +2 chain shirts
+3 ring of protection
3 scrolls of fire snake (11 level caster)
philter of love

If no one else wants the ring, Beldan will trade in his +2 ring for it. But if someone wants it, go ahead. Anything else to keep? Sell the rest?

(Male Human Rogue 14)

"Uh ... yeah, you go ahead and butcher those behirs - unless Altai wants to take some bits?

"What have you got to trade anyway?"

(Male Human Rogue 14)

"Hi ho," says Beldan to the dwarves with a wave of greeting. "You're free ... um ... seen anymore trolls around here?"

(Male Human Rogue 14)

Beldan is looking hurt and hoping for some healing.

"So ... what now? Do we explore more of this place? Or should we get on with our dragon hunt?"
