Did the stairs in the room where we fought the insect lead up or down?
In response to Naria "We should head back that way but if I remember correctly there was at least one other door over here that we have not investigated, we might as well check it on our way back."
Beilin will ready a partial action to attack the shadow creature with his flaming torch type thing if it appears around him.
sorry I thought I was still trying to fish out a burning brand from the fire and did not realize you were waiting for me.
If there is no burning wood that I can safely retrieve from the fire pit Beilin will step away from the walls (again if possible) and begin to cheer the effective party members on.
Inspire Courage
"Certainly not Naria" Beilin chimes in while looking to see if there is a burning piece of wood with part sticking out of the fire that can be handled.
Personally I think shadows would not be affected by non-magical fires, but I suppose in my own home game I would allow it particularly in situations like this where low-level heroes may not have the magical means needed to defeat the monster, and I am more than happy to benefit from these circumstances if our kind and benevolent DM feels as such.
"Only magical fire" Beilin replies while nervously stepping to U25 examining the fire. What is the fuel for it?
Yes the only chance we have is the protection of Torag through his vassal Drosk.
Beilin will also take a defensive stance Total Defense AC: 20 Touch AC: 16. In following rounds if the shadow threatens Drosk Beilin will move in and aid another attempting to distract the shadow.
"Its a shadow......we need magic to fight it effectively. It is sheer folly to attack it without. Retreat may be our only option."
Perception 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
Initiative 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
As Beilin is hardly aware of anything else he will move to investigate the dagger at Veilos's feet, completely unaware and caught off guard by Naria's call to alarm.
Once alerted he will stand with a defensive posture racking his brain for any clues or memories concerning ethereal or immaterial monsters such as this "smoke" man appears.
Knowledge Arcana 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19
any other knowledge skill 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Beilin reaches for the handle of the door opening it wide before sending his floating colored lights in to the chamber beyond.
major PC drama has kept me offline over the last 3 days. Should have my system back up and running soon.
"Gather up "heroes" sounds like fire behind this door." Beilin whispers to the group followed by praise to Torag and Drosk for the much needed healing.
Beilin will move to the door at P21 and once the group is gathered and ready will swing it open before stepping to the side for the "brute squad".
After being thoroughly disgusted by the corpse Beilin will move to the door at P21 to listen at it. Do the stairs go up or down?
Perception 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
With a grim look in his face Beilin moves to examine the corpse the giant insect was consuming.
however you want to roll the dice is fine with me, frankly if I was you I would use real dice for rolls. I have no problem with you running the PCs when they are away.
Beilin will move to O21 and attack the wretched beetle, taking advantage of the flanking bonus.
Attack 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17 Damage1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Eww acid...and I just washed these clothes.
Reflex save 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Beilin is burned badly by the acid and is down to 3hp.
Beilin will follow Manduzi's lead and move to O20 using acrobatics when necessary. Once he has arrived he will ready his quarterstaff (can't attack until next round)
acrobatics1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
I assume since everyone's actions rely upon me opening the door that my initiative is first regardless of what I roll (or last depending on how you look at it.)
Once we are all situated and ready Beilin will fling the door open then cast the spell dancing lights (arranged in a straight line starting at the door and extending into the room or passage beyond.
On the off chance that you do want my initiative for the surprise round here it is.
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
I would assume the front line types would enter the room first, perhaps Beilin could open the door and cast dancing lights in the room to best illuminate it for the others then press himself against the wall so the fighter/monk types can rush in.
Still present and active. I say we hit up the door at S18
"That makes sense Naria, still those other doors are considerably closer, maybe we should check them out on the way back, they might even connect to chambers or passages on the other side. Let's leave Roldare his weapon Drosk so that he can defend himself and this room."
Beilin grabs a bullseye lantern and the other two flasks of oil, filling the oil reservoir of the lantern and lighting the wick.
Beilin has become unusually quiet since they have entered the chamber, clearly he is affected by the dismal condition of Roldare, and the fate of Dimiria. He spends most of his time well away from the wildman eyes on the floor or walls.
Nice diplo guys, sorry I was unavailable over the last few days.
"Hey there Roldare, surely you recognize us, It's Beilin remember that time when you were up re-thatching the roof of your house and I "borrowed" your ladder." Beilin glances at the loaded crossbow after that statement, and gulps, maybe reminding him of that now is not the best idea.
"Did you say something about Dimira, is she here as well?"
This is Turning out quite odd indeed Beilin thinks to himself while concentrating on the voice from behind the locked door for any hint of deception.
I am confused, what door are we at, I seem to have gotten lost.
"We shall....But after you naturally."
Beilin grips his quaterstaff with white knuckles a hint to his nervousness which he attempts to keep hidden behind a cool facade.
Beilin will navigate carefully avoiding the pit traps to the door and try and open it.
While the others mess with the switches, Beilin pokes his head back into the entry chamber to check on Drosk. "You coming mate?"
Satisfied (hopefully) that he has not succumbed to a second hord of skeletons Beilin turns his attention to the sound made when the levers are pulled, trying to isolate the sound and direction it seems to come from.
Perception 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Joining Veilos and Naria at the pits edge, while loosening some rope to send down. "Hmmm, I have an idea about all this. Maybe the Mayors friends we found in the entrance were here to make sure that the trials we had to cross were not lethal. Suppose they were putting pillows in the pits (they did have pillows in there backpacks)so that if we triggered them we would learn a lesson but not at the cost of one of our lives. Same thing with the orcs, that close to town it would have been easy for one of the elders with some minor magic to create an illusion."
Pausing for a few minutes and anchoring the rope for Naria before continuing.
"But then while Vark and Gerol were setting up something foul (the skeletons most likely) appeared and killed them. Of course that does not explain at all how or why the skeletons are here, surely we would have been warned about them and Vark and Gerol would have taken precautions if they were known."
Beilin will move to R8, then using his dancing lights spread the lanterns about the room to illuminate for his companions and get a better feel for the room itself.
Going left works for Beilin, who will be sheltered behind the fighter types ready to lend a hand but off the front line.
As the dust and bone fragments begin to settle around us, Beilin will move to check out the deceased townsfolk he recognizes.
"Everybody OK? Or at least better than Vark and Gerol. What were they doing here anyway?"
Beilin will step back to L6 to give more room to the melee types as there is only one opponent left I will also tone down my banter (inspire courage going offline).
no I don't want to move to attack the other skeleton, I was more concerned with distracting the skeleton that hit Veilos, but since he took it down I will stay where I am and continue to inspire courage.
Beilin would like to change his action, instead of backing up five feet he would like to smash the skeleton in K8.
Attack 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
Damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Beilin will continue to inspire courage, stepping back 5 feet to make sure he is not crowding others.
doh, first time I have played a bard, you are right starting a bardic performance is a standard action so replace my above actions with this.
Beilin will make a five foot step back away from the skeletons and behind the cover provided by his companions while he begins to taunt (for the benefit of his friends) the skeletons.
Inspire Courage +1 to attack and damage
Beilin will continue to attack the same Skeleton he struck previously, he will also begin to inspire courage in his companions by ridiculing and taunting bonsey, all the while talking up his companions abilities and skill. [b](+1 to attack/damage)
Round 2
Attack 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Can't remember if you round up or down the 1.5 damage for attacking with 2 hands if it is up then I do an additional point of damage.
Beilin will move to K8 on his initiative, as these are stairs if that counts as higher ground then please add a +1 to my attack roll.
EEK! Skeletons
Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Beilin will choke up on the quarterstaff with both hands slamming it into the nearest skeleton.
Attack 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18
Damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Knowledge: Local 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
"Hey it's Gerol and Vark......whats going on...why are they here and who killed them?"
Beilin will squeeze into the chamber his lights following.
Beilin moves two of the lights into the open doorway as directed by Naria. I move to be just behind Veilos.
"Yeah we should still go in, but lets do so quietly."
Beilin casts dancing lights as 4 lanterns spaced amongst the group to keep the area around us lit. He will recast as necessary.
"Now this is turning into a real adventure. Now who could these dead animals belong to?"
Beilin nocks an arrow and moves up to support Veilos and Manduzi, keeping a wary eye on the slightly ajar door.
Perception 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Beilin will take 10 on the acrobatics check if that is possible. 10 + 6 = 16
Otherwise he will make the check the normal way.
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
Beilin nods in agreement with the Dwarf and follows the group back to the trail.
"A giant snake? or maybe a sea monster...er lake monster? This is turning into a grand adventure." Beilin stares back at the lake wistfully hoping for a glimpse of the beastie.
"Maybe we could just kind of cover him with rocks, or something...I don't know...It's usually one of the elders that deals with something like this."
"You think we should leave the body right here? Maybe we should....I don't know bury it or something?"
"What's that" Beilin says excitedly pointing in the direction of the humanoid form.
"Let's check it out.
That sounds reasonable to me Veilos.
Beilin will react to the disturbances in the night with more caution today. He will walk with arrow knocked alertly keeping an eye on the surroundings. Unfortunately he is not fit for such diligence over long periods of time and by the time he reaches the lake, the bow has been put away and he is walking with the quarterstaff and gently humming to himself.
"You know what would make this better?
"Ale, ale would make this so much better, am I right"
"It seems strange to me that the wolves attacked, I mean there has to be easier prey, why would they attack a lit campsite?" Beilin pauses in contemplation.
Knowledge Nature 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
"Yah I can help you move the wolf bodies Bandar, even if it's just to the otherside of the trail it is better then right here."
